My mom has an 06 pt cruiser. When it is shifted into drive the power steering locks up. The fluid levels are good. Any suggestions on what the heck is going on???

I would suggest testing the PSI pressure in the power steering pump. Sounds like when the idle drops down in Drive, the weak pump can't produce enough pressure to motivate the steering ram. A proper test of the pump would show that it's producing the proper pressure, and also that the pressure control valve is working.

Once these tests are done, and if the pump passes them all, you can proceed to other possible causes.
