2009 Toyota Avalon--problems with side mirror getting dark?

I have a 2009 Avalon Limited. The drivers side mirror is getting darker and darker, almost like it is burnt. I'm wondering if the heating element in the mirror has done the damage. Has anyone else experienced this? I have looked on various websites for a replacement, but can't find one. I've heard a dealership replacement is about $500.
