Hello,

My 2003 Pontiac Vibe is making a grinding noise on cold starts, but always does start. Originally, I thought it was the starter so I changed it with a brand new (not rebuilt) starter and it fixed the problem for about 2 weeks then the noise came back. I then took it to the mechanic who diagnosed it as the starter. I then replaced the starter 2 more times with the problem not going away. Has anyone else had this issue? What else could this be? I also replaced the battery with no success.

Any help is appreciated... thanks!

Did anyone check the condition of the teeth on the flywheel? Did anyone notice if this type of starter takes a special bolt, or shims, in order to work correctly?

I did not notice any shims when I replaced the original starter. Perhaps checking the flywheel would be the best next step for me. Thank you!

Seems like a logical next step. Ring gear/pinion alignment is very important.
