check engine light

have a 97 z-3 1.9 my check engine light comes on for a short period ,then goes off,and a few weeks later comes back on. any idea why?

Might be a random misfire that comes and goes. You might want to read what codes are stored. If these are misfire codes, you might do a simple tune up (spark plugs and wires) if you are due for those anyway.

There are all kinds of reasons this could occur. We'd need some data to speculate further.
