Power steering failure. Metal in gear box?

Seriously the power steering pump 2015 Enclave with 56,000 miles - failed? That is baloney. How does a "gear let go" and pull metal into it? Service guy says the part just gets loose. Huh? I also found a long screw sitting in my engine, whats the chance they are related?
