2004 grand cherokee laredo wagon gets stuck in 1st gear

hi all..
it wont get past 1st gear.. sometimes.. other times its fine. when it does it.. i turn it off and sit for 5 mins.. now its stuck there.
mechanic says dont know..could be dirty sensor..could be computer..
WAS leaking trans oil.. fixed that with new seal kit.
sensor?? selector?? HELP!!!!!!!!!
looking for ideas.. i could spend a fortune and still not fix it.

So has anyone bothered to extract codes from the TCM module? I suspect some electrical issue but without the proper professional scan tool there's not much you can do here.

Seems like your mechanic is over his head, so you might check on this website---click on the "repair shop" tab. These people know what they're doing. Hopefully there's someone on the list that is near enough to you to help you out.
