I could use some ideas'. Mercury Villager repair
My 99 Villager started flashing the Check engine light while driving down the freeway. It would flash a few times then go out. It has happened several times but usually weeks between occurrences. OBii codes gave me "Knock sensor"....(That ones been there for a long time)...and "TPS sensor"....(that ones new). Seems to run fine but occasionally idles a little faster than it should.
I got 500 miles from home and the engine seemed to quit. Once I stopped I found it was still running but was very rough...missing badly and backfiring through the intake. Would not make enough power to move the car.
Took it to a mechanic who said the Cats were clogged. (a lot of heat on the pipes in front of them). To verify I had him remove them. No improvement. The mechanic could read OBii codes (which now pointed to a bad distributor) but could not get his more advanced scanning tool to communicate with the computer. since the codes pointed to the distributor he replaced that. (although it had already been replaced a few months ago). Now it will not start at all. He said the computer must be bad. Now I'm getting even more jumpy about replacing expensive parts so I sent the computer to a repair center to be checked. (They can't find anything wrong with it).
I'm hoping someone out there can give me some idea's before I give up and junk it. The car has over 200k on it but until all this started ran perfectly and uses absolutely no oil.

A blinking CEL is usually a sign of severe misfire, so it is possible the cats were damaged, but that's only the result, not the cause. So, too, the distributor can be affected by something else.
Obviously, no one's yet gotten to the core problem. I hope someone in the aforementioned network can help you.
