Problem with my 1993 GMC S-15 (2) wheel drive automatic transmission.

When I take off from a stop, OK, then shifts to next gear, OK, but dos not shift into the next gear. I have to kick it into passing gear from approx. 60 Kms to 100 Kms, then I have to do the same thing over and over again to get back home again. Is this something that can be fixed without spending major dollars?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Your post is a bit confusing. If you have 1st and 2nd gear only, how does downshifting help you--going down one shift gives you a lower top speed than staying in the "stuck" second gear.

Based on the little you've stated, it sounds like either 3-4 clutches are worn out or the forward sprag unit is damaged.

Of course, you might get lucky if you check the fluid level and the transmission has a bad leak.
