why doesn't Ford recall the 2005 freestyle transmission

Recalls are generally only done when the manufacturer or the government determines that a genuine safety-related defect exists. This usually would not apply to a transmission. Also, the vehicle in question is long, long out of warranty, and even "extended" warranties offered in some cases never cover 14 years.
