Need a very Quiet and Smooth riding SUV

Hello Everyone,

I am hoping that this sort of post is OK as i really need some assistance. I have a hearing condition called Tinnitus (Ironically caused by working on and driving LOUD cars) and i am need of a quiet and smooth riding SUV. I went through a crazy situation last month where i leased a 2019 Audi S4 and could not stand driving the car. The exhaust drone was very irritation to me and was not enjoyable at all.

Thankfully, with the help of some friends, i was able to get out of the lease and leased a 2019 Grand Cherokee Limited with the Luxury II package. The grand Cherokee is nice and overall pretty comfortable, but it has some "flaws" to me. The first is the fact that it retained that "Trucky" ride which i was unable to really experience during my 2 35 minute test drive as the roads were all very smooth. The second is that it has this deep almost sub woofer like sound that occurs when going over uneven roads.

Thankfully a family member loves the grand Cherokee and theirs lease on their current GC is up in just a few months and is willing to take over mine.

With that said, i am looking for options out there for SUV's that have a extremely quiet interior, very smooth ride and comfort is really key to me. I have driven my mother's 2017 Ford edge Titanium and really like it, i will definitely be looking into that car and also the Lexus RX350 as that seems to have great reviews regarding how quiet it is. Would like to keep it around that price range too (Although my perfect vehicle would likely be a Tesla Model X, not financially able to swing it).

Thank you in advance for any and all help and opinions!

I think the RX350 would be a great choice, if that's in your budget.

the edge is very nice. And the obvious choice is the Lexus if you want hushed quiet. In any case, go with a more luxury oriented trim level. Stay away from sporty, and real low profile tires.

and I would recommend a much more thorough test drive before buying again, to make sure. Getting out of leases like this is beating the odds!

Our Enclave is honestly like a bank vault on wheels.  Very, very quiet.

I believe you tjc because you were wearing that referee shirt...wait, it was more like one of the old Bowery Boys in a prisoner shirt - just kidding B) But I agree with your comment about the Enclave. Also a nice vehicle for a long distance drive.

Whatever you choose, ask for an overnight test drive, drive it for a LOOONG distance over all kind of roads.

Interesting, i have thought about an overnight test drive.  Is there any manufacturers that offer that?  Or does it go by dealership?
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 51,301
it goes by the dealership. Even if not overnight, just explain you have specific issues and need a longer than normal test drive. Figure out how long it really takes for you to tell. An hour? Doesn't hurt to ask!

Just bumping this to see if anyone has other suggestions. Right now my list includes...

    Lexus RX350
    Volvo XC90
    Ford Escape
    Infiniti QX60
Ram 1500 (Rogue possibility, but i used to have one and it was very quiet)

And i had the chance to drive the Audi Q5, but was not a fan. Felt too small inside and the ride was honestly not great. I think it will likely come down to the RX350 or the Ram 1500.

Another question for you guys, are there any differences in the ride/interior cabin noise in the RX350 when you compare the Base and F Sport? Love the look of the F Sport.

I assume you meant explorer, not escape? Because Escape definitely does not ft this list. Did you also consider Volvo XC60?

my limited experience with the F sport version is that there is not much difference. Maybe a slightly firmer ride from the tires, but it is still definitely a Lexus and comfort based. More of a styling package.

Yes, i am sorry i did mean explored. I will probably also take a look at the XC60 just to compare to the XC90 while i am there. This time i am deffinitely not rushing into any decisions, so since i have about 4-5 months until i can get into a new car i am going to start casually looking.

Thankfully my uncle has the RX350 sans F Sport package, i will be trying to take his for a few days so i can see how it drives.

If you are not in a big rush, how about the upcoming Lincoln Aviator? The beginning of next year brings an all new Highlander. Reviews seen to indicate the Subaru Ascent is pretty quiet and smooth as well. Just a lot out there.

I have had 2 Buick Enclaves. The ride was the best ever! They were quiet and smooth. I haven’t had the best of luck with them lasting as long as Inwould like. I test drove a Kia Telluride today and it was quiet, but I could feel every single bump in the road. I too am in search of a reasonably priced suv to seat 7 that is smooth and quiet.
