My QC Sport, 4.7L, auto, 3.55, 2wd seems to be getting better mileage with each tank. My in-town figures are 15, 13, 14.6, 14.6, 15.1 mpg (about 2185 miles on it). Hope it keeps on going up. My rpm is right at 2000 at 65mph, 2200 or so at 70.

    Scott,
I used to work in Langhorne at the Woods School, way back when... Nope, these days I live in Lansdowne (not to be confused with Lansdale!) - not too far - don't get any wild ideas about spare parts!!! Hey, You've got good taste too! Big Lucy is Eagles Green and Silver!

I am going to purchase a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab with tow package, limited slip axle, etc. What is relationship between axle ratios, engine size and rpm's. I will tow a boat/trailor weighing about 2000 lbs. I've heard both good and bad stories with the 4.7 l v8. What about the V6?
Any feed back would geatly help.
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Joe, for a 2000 pound loas, the 3.55 is more than sufficient. The 3.9 however, is insufficient for propelling the truck let alone towing with it. The size of a Dakota is larger and heavier than the other compacts. The 4.7 is a great engine, and
most if not all of us on these forums are very satisfied with it.

I am looking at ordering a quad cab. As to the $1000 rebate, does the vehicle have to be delivered before the rebate expires or can it be ordered before the deadline for the rebate to apply? Also, is there a web site address that would give access to the locator service the dealers have to find out what vehicles are available at other dealerships. This would make it much easier to find the right vehicle without having to involve a dealer until needed. Thanks in advance for your help!
  • ritzoidritzoid Member Posts: 19
I just ordered a qc (last week) and was told by the dealer that rebates apply at the date of delivery and not on the order date. The salesman also said that he did not expect them to go away anytime soon. (For what it's worth.) I found an interesting web site at www.driveoff.com which lets you select a vehicle and options and gives you a range of prices at different distances from your home zip code. They claim to be able to get you the vehicle you want (or substantially close to it.) Did you check into the Farm Bureau rebate? Good luck

I am thinking about buying Quad Cab 4x4 with the 4.7 V8 or the Sport Trac. I loved test drive of the QC but the ST was nicer inside. The QC seems to have more umph and is what I'm leaning to the only problem is I commute 80 miles a day. So should I buy some 40mpg car or should I let my machismo make the decision.

  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Kevin, that's a tough call. If you think that a Yugo will offer the mileage, and don't really care
one way or the other, then by all means follow your star, even if it means driving through the old neighborhood at night when your friends can't see you. Or, you could buy the Ford Sport-Trac 5 speed, and be blown off by a Dodge Dakota and say, just like the guy who does the commercials for V8 juice; "Gee, I could have had a V8!" Seriously, only you can make the choice. Whatever you choose, make certain that it is the best choice for your particular needs. Follow your heart.

I went through the QC vs. ST debate for about 6 months before buying my QC. The things I feel the ST has going for it are its looks, the cool sliding rear window, and the SMT bed.

BUT, after seriously studying and test driving both vehicles (and others) extensively over at least a 6 mo. period, I went with the QC b/c: 1) the looks -- I feel the QC looks like a cool truck for persons of all ages, while the ST is a more of a cute SUT (sport utility truck) for younger (high school/college?) persons; 2) performance -- hands down the QC has the ST beat. From what I understand from this and other Dakota boards, the gas mileage with the 4.7L engine is similar to the ST's (approx. 17 hwy), but the 4.7 clearly outclasses the V-6 in the ST in terms of acceleration etc.; 3) The QC out-handles the ST by far and has a better turning radius to boot. So even though it is a longer vehicle, I found that I could park the QC and make U-Turns easier in the QC than the ST. Also, I feel it is less prone to roll over vs. the ST due to its wider track and lower height; 4) more usable interior and exterior space. In terms of interior room, both vehicles are pretty close, but I feel the QC feels larger. And if you have kids, the car seats will fit better in the QC rear seat. Also, the way the rear seats fold up offers much more room inside the cab. In terms of exterior space -- no comparison since the QC has a longer and more usable bed. At first this didn't really matter to me when buying the truck, but now that I have it, I am very appreciative of the space afforded by the longer bed, and I'm that much more happy I didn't buy the ST; and 5) Price/Value -- the QC is several thousands of dollars less than a similarly equipped ST and you get much more amenities for the $$ (the ST doesn't even have a low fuel warning light, heated mirrors, steering wheel mounted stereo controls, etc. etc. etc.) And currently, with the 2K rebate or 1K rebate plus low financing options, the QC is a steal in my estimation. For the money you save over the ST, you can buy cool performance parts, a tonneau cover, bed liner, etc. and still come out ahead.

I could go on and on, but for the sake of the board, I'll cut this message short. In summary, if you're absolutely drawn to the niche looks of the ST (and I admittedly still am), go with the ST. But if you want looks, superior performance, and $$ left in your pocket, go with the QC. Good luck with your decision!

the sport trac was the only vehicle which I agonized over before choosing my qc. the luxury of the interior (especially the extra cost optional moon roof which I swore I would have on my next vehicle) and the auto-rear window, were strong selling points for the ford.
To the point, I looked at the qc, test drove it, and the sport-trac didn't have a chance. Needless to say, my dodge has no moonroof, but I am in love with my qc. Bed size also factored in, slightly.
one word of advice, if you do not live in an area which is constantly under white stuff, eschew the full time 4WD for part time, as it does seem to lug down your horses and mileage somewhat.
What ever your choice, good luck and drive safely!

Bob, I saw those pics on your site and I had to go to my front window to make sure my baby was still in the driveway. It was almost like seeing a ghost. Those nice 16" wheels were a dead giveaway (not to mention the bath I haven't had the time to give her), as were the step bars . both would look sharp on my Gretchen. Hmmm. Where in Lansdowne do you live anyway, I'm feeling naughty!! ;)
Take care, and happy valentine's day to all! take care to wash and check the fluids of those you love (and be nice to your wives husbands, boyfriends and girlfriends too)!
    drive safely all

he everybody. Great site, great advise. I just purchased a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab ST, 4.7 V8 4X2, auto, with some extra perks thrown in. It is a beautiful truck, but I didn't buy it to look at. It has already been in the shop twice in two weeks. The problem I am having is when I start driving, sometimes it has a hard time when it reaches 10-20 miles per hour. The car feels like it is in neutral and no matter how hard I try, it takes a sometime until I feel it catch and then I start to move. The first time the dealer told me that they forgot to plug in some codes into the computer, and that they flashed the tarns controller with a quick learn program. I brought it home and after two days, it is doing it again. I just called and they told me that the transmission fluid was low, and that the person inspecting it before I took it home must have checked the fluid while it was in park, instead of neutral, which supposedly makes a difference. My car is only two weeks old and has only 200 miles. This is the first new car I have ever bought so I am praying to God this is not a lemon. Thanks for you help.

The part I keyed on was the "commute 80 miles a day" Personally I love my Quad cab and I don't think the Sport Trac really compares. What "I" would do in your situation is I would not buy a 4dr pickup for a commuter. "I" would buy the new Ford Focus SVT, Probably give you almost as many grins per mile as a Quad cab on 1/2 the gas. As much as I LOVE my current Dakota and my trouble free ownership of a 93 Club Cab I expect it will be my last "Chrysler" product. I think Dodge is going to be pulled into a downward spiral by the Damlier situation. The vast majority of Chryslers extremely talented people jumped ship when it became apparent that Damlier was not a partner but rather the new owner. You don't make cutting edge, high quality, well engineered vehicles when you are laying off personnel, closing factories and cutting costs. Just "my" personal opinion. Rick

Hello - Not sure this is the right forum but what can it hurt.

I was wondering what kind of deals folks have made for extended warranties on their Dodge 4x4 QC. I didn't get one at the time I bought the truck thinking I'd do a little research first. I plan on having the truck a while so figured the extended warranty couldn't hurt.

The finance guy offered me what he called the "salesman's price", 15% over his cost, which totaled about $1350 for the 7yr 60K bumper-to-bumper warranty. Supposedly it's what he charges car salemen working at the dealership who get the extended warranty.

Warranty Direct @ http://www.warrantydirect.com quotes about $1100 for their 5yr 100K bumper-to-bumper. It supposedly includes wear and tear items which the guy at the dealership said he didn't see how they could.

I can get MBI coverage for 6yr 75K from my credit union for about $900.00. It is not bumper-to-bumper but covers the major items.

I'd prefer the Chrysler warranty but am curious if anyone has had experience with Warranty Direct or MBI coverage or other 3rd party extended warranties.

I've seen the testimonials on Warranty Direct web site but am still skeptical.

    Your comments are appreciated.

I ordered a QC SLT 2WD, 4.7 at,anti-spin diff, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, HD Grp, Taupe leather, two-tone(red/Silver), Security, Overhead Conv Grp, Trailer Tow, SLT Plus Grp, it has almost everything. I ordered it 12/27 and picked it up 2/12(yesterday). I bought it thru a Friends program at 2% under Invoice. I took the .9% financing for 24 mo. instead of the $1000 rebate. I was going to pay cash but the financing saved me money ($1200) without the rebate. After signing the papers yesterday, I get a call from the dealer informing me that DC changed the rules on the day I bought the truck. Not only did I get the financing, I also got the $1000 rebate!! The dealer asked me to come in and sign the new papers reflecting the rebate. The truck cost $24,200 and the Financing will cost a total of $227. What a deal and what a Dealer! Unbelievable. I am wanting to get wheel flares but the Dealer said they can not get them in Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat. Can some one help? The QC is amazingly quiet and a great ride. I made a good choice even if I only have 200 miles on it. More later

    Go to http://www.chryslerwarranty.com

This Chrysler dealership in Iowa sells the Chrysler extended warranty for hundreds of dollars off of the MSRP. They can get away with this b/c they do not advertise their discount program anywhere -- just by word of mouth. I understand that the "advantage" to going with the Chrysler warranty is that you get a rental car even if you bring your car in for routine maintenance, and all Mopar parts (including those you added to the car prior to purchasing the warranty -- like tonneau cover etc.) are covered by the extended warranty as well. Sam's Club also offers an extended warranty through http://www.warrantyvillage.com/sams

I believe it was a little cheaper than the discounted plan from Chrysler for the same comparative years/mileage. But when I compared apples with apples, I felt the factory extended warranty plan was more comprehensive and suited my needs more. Good luck.

FYI interested buyers of Dakota. www.4adodge.com has started a rebate of $2000 on 2001 Dakotas. I checked with my local dealer and he's not sure if it includes AC but the Dodge site just says Dakota. This rebate is in effect until 4/03/01. Check out the site.
  • icecrmmanicecrmman Member Posts: 3
For some reason my spellchecker changed the QC to AC. It is the Quad Cab.

    I ordered a new Dakota quad (4.7v8, auto,2wd,lsd),
got a great deal at $100 over invoice.
My dealer called yesterday, said my truck would
be here by 1st of March and rebate is NOW $2000!
Plus FB rebate of $500., I can't wait!:)
Now if my credit union would lower the interest
    rate,,,,,,,,

    I have a 2000 QC 4.7 5 speed, LSD, runs great.
I believe i got the 3.55 ratio but i wish i had known i had a choice. Does anyone know what kind of differences there are in the ratio's?
I ran my truck down the quarter mile in 15.8 seconds at 86 mph. Would 3.92 be better?

Richard, as posted above by txqc2000, I got the Iowa address off of these boards for www.chryslerwarranty.com. I did a little research and found them to be far less expensive, so I purchased one for my Quad. I chose a 50.00 Deductible 6 yr 60,000 mile added care plan, and at that time it cost 685.00. They mailed the warranty to me. Yes it is a DC warranty not 3rd party. If I had to pay 800 or more I probably wouldn't have purchased it. Once again a great money saving tip from the good folks on this forum Good luck, Nick..
  • stnickstnick Member Posts: 177
Since they switched to this new format, the spellchecker needs a spellchecker!
  • bookittybookitty Member Posts: 1,303
Nick, under "Preferences," you may select your own personal dictionary for abbreviations, proper nouns and/or slang. Once created within the "preferences" dictionary, these spelling are then fully accepted. Also, when the spell checker deems a word misspelled, you can
bring the word into display in the checker box, and you will see the *ignore in the box which indicates that the word will be accepted at face value.

Does anyone have a 4x4 QC 4.7l 3.92 axle with towing package? We're considering this truck but would like to hear from someone who is actually using one for towing. The plan is to eventually occasionally tow a 3-horse trailer (about 5000 lbs). Probably 90% "kids taxi service" use.

I just purchased a loaded quad cab factory order . . . Tow package,HD service package, sport package plus, power conv., delux conv., 4-wh. antilock, anti spin diff., leather seats, leather steering wheel,4.7 v8, skid plate, power seat, rear window defrost,cd player 8 speakers,3.92 axle . . . all for 25,825 . . . including the $2000 rebate . . . was this a good deal? OR avg.
Help!!! The claimed they gave me invoice subtracting rebate . . . I believe they still made about $1000 off me? :(
what are the advantages of the 3.92 axle . . . only towing?
I've heard that gas milage adn excess wear are caused by the 3.92 . . . but that's just rumor
  • bobs5bobs5 Member Posts: 557
The 3.92 axle will provide increased towing capacity, better acceleration, and slightly more gas consumption.
I believe there is a 200-300 rpm difference than a truck equipped with 3.55 axle.

Hi, I live in Northern Calif, and there doesn't seem to be any 5 sp V-8 QC's on any of the lots
within 60 miles of me. I live near Sacramento, and have been to 7 dealerships in the area.
When you say 5 sp, the guy says "Huh????" Do they just not make them for lots anymore?
I want to test drive a 5 sp before I order one. Do any of you that own a 5 sp have the same
problem as I am???? Some bozo today told me that they don't make them anymore and that
Dodge recalled all of them because they had problems. Sounds like he wanted to sell me
something that was on his lot.
  • lman333lman333 Member Posts: 10
Actually, there are no 5 spd's at all. Not even a v-6 or a club cab, or 2wd or anything.
  • iowabigguyiowabigguy Member Posts: 552
The reason there are no 5 speeds because the managers that order the floor plans realize most buyers are "shiftless". They look for model/option combinations that are proven sellers. I'm sorry to say that most people don't want to get involved with driving and having to shift is inconvenient. How do you drink, eat, talk on the cell phone and shift too.
I imagine you will find it difficult to locate a 5 speed especially in areas with lots of traffic. It makes stop and go traffic more work. I live in the midwest and I could only find 1 v8/5speed to test drive before I ordered mine and it was a fully loaded 4x4 while I wanted a 2 wheel drive. The dealer had several v6/5speeds because they were entry level (cheaper) trucks. Don't believe there are no 5 speeds out there, the dealer wants to sell what is on his lot and some will lie to you to try to accomplish that.
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
Sure DC offers 5sp manual trannys. They are called out in the sales brochure for the Dakota.

You may have to ask the dealer to get on his computer and check the "network" of other dealers. Most dealers offer a service wheras you can have a vehicle 'brought in' from another dealership.

Other than that... you will find that most of us that have the manual xmission actually orderd it from the factory. (You often get a better deal that way anyway because the dealer only has to fill out an order sheet and he makes money. A vehicle sitting on his lot COSTS him money)

I was lucky enough to find a dealer that actually had a 5sp on his lot and after test-driving... I orderd one for myself. (less than a month from order to delivery)
  • bobs5bobs5 Member Posts: 557
The 5 sp may not be available on the dealers lot. I did not find any when I searched the dealerships.

I ordered of faith and got the 5 spd. I is nice.

The manual tranny is available with the v6 or the 4.7l v8 engine.

Do you feel better now? Somtimes it feels good to blow some steam.
It may not be the engineering that is the problem. Perhaps it is the execution of the design that needs to be re-engineered. (read corperate mindset)

Thanks to those who posted. I finally found a 5 sad to test drive. It was actually a 99 model
club cab, and it was my friends parents! I asked them if I could take it for a test drive and they
were happy to do so. He said he was overall very happy with the truck. Personally, I didn't
really like the 5 sad. As I have read on some board here, 1st gear is useless!!!! Some people
even said they started out in 2nd. Also, I found a very rough shift between 1st and 2nd. He
said that it will do it until it warms up a bit. Sure enough, about 4-5 minutes after driving it,
it became much smoother. This is puzzling. hmmmm?????

So as much as I hate to do it, I am thinking of a auto tarns. I own a 99 Nissan 4x4 with 198K
on it and it has a auto tarns. Overall extremely satisfied with the truck, and I got used to the
auto cranny. 5spd are much more fun to drive. (especially my wife's 2000 mist eclipse!) Got
pulled over yesterday in it for doing 74 in a 55, didn't get a ticket. Most cops are actually pretty
    nice.....but hats a different board.

I suggest a quick drive of a 2001 5 speed 4.7 V8. Mine shifts like a dream at any temperature. It was well worth the 2 month wait.
  • bpeeblesbpeebles Member Posts: 4,085
(lman333) listen to grahamcracker! The NV3500 manual transmission that is coupled to the 4.7L V8 Hemi is very nice and has proven itself over many years. (The same connot be said about the 45RFE automatic that is found ONLY on the 4.7L)

Perhaps the one you tested had the wrong viscosity gear oil in it, or has not seen fresh oil for a good many miles. (Both of which would cause the problems you describe)

Which tranny was it that you tested? NV1500 or the NV3500 unit,
  • lman333lman333 Member Posts: 10
It might be possible that there is a difference between the 99 model and the 2001 model. As I
said before though, 1st gear is useless on the 99, and that was the opinion of some previous posts. Whats your opinion on that? I may be spoiled from
my 97 Z-24 cavalier or my wifes new 2000 mits eclipse. Now that is a smooth shifter!!!! Should
I try to find a 5spd or bite the bullet and buy an auto????

After many months of evaluation, it is on order. Whew! Dakota quad cab with most options except leather interior, block heater, and fold-away mirrors. 4x4, 3.55, 4.7l. Cannot wait for its arrival. $400 over invoice.

I did not order the rear sliding window and would like help in finding who/where an electric rear slider can be purchased and/or installed. In my trusty 1990 S-10 that now has 225k miles with an extended cab, I could barely reach the rear slider while driving and see no possibility with the QC of reaching it, thus the desire for an electric and non purchase of the factory slider.

Also, I did not go for any of the extended warranty packages and hope that is smart. I would appreciate comments on the slider, the warranty pkg, and anything else in lieu of its arrival.

Brent, I currently own a 2000 Quad with 4.7 and 5 speed manual transmission. A smooth and effortless
shift mechanism. I had a 1995 Club cab, with the 5.2 and a 5 speed. Also great. Both units had the 3.55 LSD and both were 4X4. My 1995 had the tires that came with the 4X4 as the 31X10.5X15 were not available to order. Until I upgraded and upsized the tires, the 1995 felt like first gear was a "grunt." The first Quad that I ordered came in with a 3.92 instead of the 3.55 as ordered. I refused delivery, because that felt like a granny gear as well. Perhaps the 1999 you drove had smaller diameter rubber and a 3.92. This will feel different from the 3.55 with the tire and handling package. Look into it. I am very pleased with my truck.

I've ordered a Quad Cab and according to the dealership it shipped on the 8th, but it's not in yet (as of 2/19). Is there another way to check the status of an ordered Dodge rather than calling the salesman or relying on him to call? Thanks.
