It is driven by the timing chain. It can be (is supposed to be) done without removing the front timing cover and chain, but there are lot's of traps that can happen and then you end up in a larger operation so you have to be very careful and precise with each step. You will have to remove the front engine mount and support the engine on a floor jack during the repair. If you are very good at doing repairs on a single attempt then this might be within your reach, otherwise it is best left to someone with more experience.
