Why did the location of emergency brakes change?

Why do newer vehicles have the emergency brake by the driver’s foot instead of next to the shifter?
What made auto manufacturers change this?

I can’t seem to find the answer to this anywhere.

    My guess?

That space is too important to be used on something that is rarely used, especially on cars with automatic transmissions. Better to put some electronic doohickey there instead.
