Technically, a higher numerical rearend ratio is called a lower rear-end. That is because the output (at the wheels)rpms are lower. Rearend ratios is the hardest thing to get correct because the best gas mileage and engine life would call for a ratio of 2.5-3.5:1. To pull any load or quick acceleration requires a 3.5 or above ratio (all numbers are generic). The key to any engine use is to get the amount of torque needed to the wheels to move the load. That is why constant velocity transmissions have so much appeal is that they can maintain the engine at a peak efficiency, but even they have to have two modes, pulling and cruising.

I agree with what you said, but I would like to add that you can also gain in the transmission ratios. You can also put an overdrive unit in and get the best of both worlds.
