Help me understand cost of auto insurance. Seems way too high?!

I never bought a car before in the US.

I am looking for a used sedan in the price range of 9k-10k but I have no idea how much the insurance for such a car should cost.

I live in New York city and the few quotes I asked online seem impossibly high (around $270/month for basic coverage).

Is insurance really so expensive or am I missing something?

P.s. I am an immigrant and received a US driving license only 2 years ago. Maybe that's a factor?

    Your location, lack of long time driving record, lack of time with car insurance.. all play into higher rates.

    Your age, sex and marital status can also all influence the rates.

    So far I managed to get a better deal from Geico. Their online tool gave me a quote for 144.40/month.

    Here is a screenshot. Much better already!
