Well, I am driving my 'loaner' car (a 99 Taurus that smells funny) while the ST is in service. The only thing they got to today was the AC. I was told that they emptied out the system and recharged it in case the factory didn't have it up to spec. I really think if you are noticing your AC not being cold, then there is definitely a question there for your service tech. My 96 Explorer Sport with 78K still runs ice cold, much colder than the ST at all stages of driving.
I told the service guy that I know he might not be able to duplicate the problem since it is happening intermittently. I told him I DO know something is not right with it. Now they have recharged the system. Maybe I will see a difference.

To the questions about leather, or factory leather...I think it is very soft and very nice.
This is my first 'leather' experience, but it is very smooth and comfortable. My sis-in-law's new Jetta has leather but it is very tight and not as giving and soft as my leather in the ST. WELL worth the money.

I am posting some more pics of my estate green on the yahoo site. enjoy them. I hope to get a good pic of the subwoofer and it's location on there by the weekend so be watchin'!

I picked one up at my local ford dealer. They had them in the parts department. I don't think think they all have it, but it might be worth a shot.

I ordered a bed mat ($40.00 exactly) and the sport bra hood cover from Ford on Saturday and they called me on the following Wednesday (5 days). I just look on the box for the bra and it was shipped 2nd day UPS from CA. I don't know where the mat was shipped from, I already threw the box away.

Just picked up my bed mat today. It took 7 days to get here. I paid $40 plus tax at my Ford dealer. It looks great and fits well. I tried the cargo cage and it only takes a very little effort to lock it open or closed. I am not going to cut into the mat or the cage bumpers to adjust it.
I also received my tonneau cover letter today. I called and ordered it right away. I was told that it will be in anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks. Thanks to this site I was able to find out about the offer and call to get my name on the list.

What did you do with the Firestones, did the dealer buy them back or did you eat the cost?
I am buying a ST w/16" Firestones and may want them replaced for Michelins.

Can someone post a picture of a silver frost ST?
I may want to change my order while I still can to
the dark blue! Additionally, does the high series
console come with an inside tray/CD holder as my Ranger has? The one I looked at in the showroom just had a big empty console.

I resolved my stalling and AC problem by taking my ST to another dealer. My base idle was 200 - 300 RPM, the 4.0L SOHC calls for the base idle to be set at 900 RPM (cold start is around 1200 RPM). It took less than 40 min to run the diagnostic test and set the RPM. Now the air stays cold and my ST runs smoother. There is a service bulletin number 8381 for a higher than normal base idle speed of 1200-1400 RPM, but none on the lower idle speed. So, I check the RPM before they work on my AC...you know your dealer wants to make as much as they can under warranty.

    RE: gbut
I would call Ed Molchany who is brand marketing manager for the ST. He does return phone calls, and you can find his Ph# in the last town hall discussion on the ST. I don't remember the post #. Maybe some else remembers the post# or Ph#???

I think I have discovered what the secondary moon roof leak some people are seeing is from. The first moon roof leak is from drip tubes disconnecting from the roof.

But I accidentally discovered what the secondary source might be. Unlike other moon roofs this roof can be tilted open any amount. Not slid open but rear tilt/vent.

I backed out of my driveway and a small amount of water ran down the inside of the windshield. I discovered that the moon roof was tilted open just about 1/8". Not enough that you could see it from inside the truck but enough to let water in during heavy rain.

So anyone with a leak (after the drip tubes are fixed.) open and close the moon roof once and see if the leak still exists. Mine didn't.

Someone post the tonneau cover part number. It is located on the rear hinge area, passenger side when you fold up the tonneau. I am away this week and trying to keep up to date. The bedmat is $40. Go to user.snip.net/~bobkunkle/sporttrac1.jpg

Got called today that my Factory crossbars are in. I ordered the elliptical ones on 6/27 and they just came in. I was charged $85.

    Keep up the great posts.
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
I hope there was an error when the guy told me $46 for the bed mat--it's only $6, but still. He said that was what came up on the computer.

I ordered my tonneau cover on August 13th and it arrived September 29th -- 47 days = six weeks, five days.

Thanks for the info on the idle RPMs rb125! I will check it when I get my ST back today or tomorrow.

Has anyone else had trouble getting into the ST club on Yahoo? I clicked on join here, then did everything necessary, but when I received the e-mail from Yahoo it didn't tell me any more about joining the club. Help! anyone? GO BIG RED!

I'm also interested in buying the crossbars. Just found the Yakima site at www.yakima.com. There's several links for online dealers who sell their products. The crossbars you just bought for $85 are only $40 if you get them online (not thorough Ford). Can you return yours? I know makrups were a lot, but not that much! Good luck with them! P.S. - what size did you order (48", 58"...)? I want to order mine today, plus a bike rack to go with them.

Does anyone know what brand the side and rear window vent shades are that ford is selling in the catalog? Also the bug deflector? Thanks!
  • ramarantramarant Member Posts: 9
My spt joust came today and guess what? Ford put the wrong radio on it because they run out of the
AM / FM Stereo / Clock with 6-Disc In-Dash CD / Pioneer Sound System and they give me Electronic AM/FM Stereo/Clock/Single CD/Cassette. That really suck!!!!!!!!!!! I'm thinking to cancel the purchase of the spt. The production date was 8/7/00.
  • bmarcusebmarcuse Member Posts: 7
I ordered the elliptical crossbars on wednesday, picked them up thursday. I got home and the screw fasteners where all turned to tight to open. I am trying to exchange it this afternoon or tommorroe. It is not the same crossbar that yakima sells. I think it looks much better.
  • moose21moose21 Member Posts: 14
I got the catalog at the dealership (had them hidden in the showroom); they only had about 5, and said they are hard to get a hold of.
The vent shades are Ford (box, wrapping, & 'Ford' on each one). Paid $55.00 (have gotten to know the parts managers at 2 dealers, including one that also owns an ST); part # f77z-18246-ba. The bed mat was $40.00, and the only part I haven't been able to get within 2 days has been the rear window deflector. The part # for the soft t-cover is 99501a42 ($?? - I'm holding out for the hard cover).
I also have the locking gas cap - part #XU5Z-9030-HA ($29); comes with 2 keys & works great.

ALSO - the parts manager said the mat fits without need to cut the rubber stops - just mildly hit the top of each end of the cage if you don't get the knobs to engage without stress on them.

Has anyone compared the Ford hard cover and the ARE cover side-by-side ?? Opinions ??

Anybody change out their tires upon buying your ST and getting any credit for them from dealer towards new ones?

    re: bennb
born Omaha 58..... Im still a Husker fan.... :)
This may be OUR year once again!

    re: ramarant
Ordered mine march. Notified June mine is on its way, VIN# and all options I wanted. WRONG! everything except the tonneau cover! They reordered with the cover! I woundered if it was ordered without just to get it sold. I think they were hoping I would give in and just buy it. But no thanks, I'll wait. Now its delivery date is now September. Im hoping for the best but........ Well we'll see it to believe it when it comes in.
If it's missing anything Im walking and reordering at another dealership. Might get a better deal anyway now that I have found this web site and the yahoo site.
  • robertc5robertc5 Member Posts: 18
I have seen both the A.R.E. cover and the Ford cover. My opinion - I like the Ford one better. The ARE is probably stronger and the ability to color match the body makes for a different look. Better look? Who knows, a matter of personal opinion. The reason I think the Ford one is better is versatility. The mid point hinge allows it to work easily with the cage. And it can be removed much easier than the ARE cover, which is a time consuming, probably 2 person job. It is also built to work with the ST and the black compliments the overall look nicely. Cost - close to a wash. The $590 price installed w/o tax is a better deal. I have seen several posts on Yahoo which tell of ARE deals of around $585, but I have not been able to find a ARE dealer in my town who will do it for less than $700 plus tax.

I bought one for my ST two weeks ago after discussing it with the service rep at the ford dealer I purchased my ST from. He said just tell the auto parts store that you need one for a 2000 explorer since the engines are basically the same. He said that combined with a Flowmaster it will give me between 15-20 additional horsepower. The rep recommend not doing one without the other (installing a higher volume muffler) because the more you breath in (K&N) the more you have to exhale (Flowmaster). The guy at the muffler shop said my pipes didn't need to be replaced because they were large enough for the mod I wanted to make. He stated the general rule is 1 inch diameter per 100 horsepower. He said my ST has a 2.25 so don't let them sell you any pipe. They had to use a short piece to butt the exhuast and the flowmaster together since the flowmaster was a little shorter then the factory muffler. Asked the mechanic at the dealer what he thought of the SuperChip and he said don't waste your money. All it does is keep your vehicle in a single gear a little longer for a little quicker top end and that is not good for your tranny in the long run.

Basically..... I have noticed a slight increased in acceleration, lower rpm at cruising speed 55-60, and better gas mileage.

So I would say... GO FOR!!!.... :-)
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
Just talked to the dealership and they said the reason my gas door was rubbing was b/c a spring was bent on it. I am hoping they are right, but I get the feeling they aren't. I'm sure they've dealt with this before, but the guy I talked to earlier about heating the arm wasn't the same guy who called me a minute ago. I'll keep you up to date.

Finally got my st. ordered 3/28--picked
up 8/29. ordered 4x2 loaded (mandarin gold).
cancelled tonneau cover due to material hold
early may. informed in june that i had to
pick another color. wanted silver but told
    not available yet----couldn't have mandarin
but no silver yet--made no sense---so have
a white one with tan leather. manufactured
7/28 so think i am sol on the $590 tonneau
but will call brian to check. picked it up
at bonanza ford in cheney, wa (nice samll
town dealership) for $100 over invoice. my
salesman promoted to sales manager. nice
young (23-25) man. general manager who
threatened to refund my deposit because i
insinuated he wasn't doing his job (finding
out why my st hadn't been scheduled before

still haven't found out why but am appeased
by st sitting in my driveway. now to start

I just noticed in my dark garage that the illuminated door lock switches (on the front doors) stay on all the time. I realize they probably don't draw much current, but I don't see mention either way in the manual about this "feature." Do all ST's have these perpetually illuminated switches?

Just purchased 2001 Sports Trac, mileage for 1st
1000 miles as posted 18-20. Wanted "zoom zoom" so changed out muffler to straight thru and removed the resonator. This vehicle has 4 catalytic converters and I did nothing with those, all changes were after them on the pipe. Mileage went down 30%! now 13-16. Some "experts" tell me the computer requires backpressure to monitor fuel
usage??? I find it hard to believe that putting a straight thru muffler caused this drop in mileage. The other noticeable thing was that the idle rpm went from 900 to 600. Anything info would be appreciated, hate to put back "old" muffler.
Dealer checked engine, found nothing wrong but didn't notice the muffler change. What can I do? Help.....

Could someone post the part # for the bed mat. I am seriously thinking about purchasing one. As we all know, it's best to go in with a part #. Less time and sure to get what you wanted the FIRST time. Since the sport trac is so new, some of the dealers, parts counter clerks, etc. aren't sure of the many questions/requests we are making. So let's continue to help each other by posting part #s for the add-on items. THANKS!

Still waiting to here from someone with a light rack on top. Where are the 4x4 owners? I must be the only person interested in having lights installed on top. A truck accessory shop has everything I want except the mounting brackets to make it fit the sport trac. The lights, rack, etc. look great in the shop. Just need the brackets. Any suggestions of online dealers to check?

Go Georgia Bulldogs!! First game tomorrow in Athens against Georgia Southern. Will drive the sport trac from Atlanta to the game. Already have the flags, magnetic signs, etc. for it so it can have it's game face on. Any other Bulldog fans in the Atlanta metro area with a sport trac?

Anybody that order the spt and the production date are from 8-7-00 and forward better check with dealer because Ford run out of "6 cd radio" and is putting the "single CD" instead.

New to the list? Haven't been keeping up?Looking for part numbers, phone numbers, tonneau info, etc.

    Here's a tip:
Open the ST topic of your choice, #1, #2, #3, etc.
Click on the "Show all responses" link at the top of the page.
Stand up and stretch your legs.
Once the page has loaded, use your Browser Find command (ex. Edit --> Find(on this page) or CTRL+F in Internet Explorer) to search for a keyword.

    Or..Even better:
Use the Search button at the bottom of the page and select the search "Responses in current topic". This one supports multiple keywords.

This is a great way, until someone compiles a FAQ, to locate past information.

    Good luck!

    Re: ramarant

I find it somewhat hard to believe that Ford is putting the single CD systems in the place of the 6CD system. Ford's typical procedure for material shortage items is to not build the vehicle. For example, in 1994 when I ordered my Mustang GT, I had to wait over three months to get a build date because CD players and leather seats were in limited supply. Another example is the tonneau cover. Several ST orders have been held up during the year, all waiting on the cover.

If you haven't already done so, I think you should ask your dealer to show you the DORA for your order and verify that your dealer ordered the radio you wanted.
  • ramarantramarant Member Posts: 9
I GET MY INFO FROM MY DAD THAT WORK ON THE DEALER
AND THE PERSON THAT PLACE ALL THE ORDERS. THEY ORDER 12 SPT WITH THE 6 CD RADIO WITH MINE AND GUESS WHAT THEY PUT THE SINGLE CD PLAYER ON ALL OF THEM.
HE TOLD ME THAT FORD RUN OUT OF THE RADIOS AND INSTEAD TO STOP PRODUCTION THEY jOUST PLACE THE OTHER RADIO IN.
  • ramarantramarant Member Posts: 9
I recommend to everybody that place and order with the 6 cd radio to call dealer or ford motor company to get status!!!!!!!!!!!

I did not order the broom stick type crossbars. I order the factory ellipital/ocal crossbars. They go across the side rail to side rail.

On the Yakima site you are looking at only the bars for $40 the also need the mounts for $60+ additional dollars. I will post part numbers when I get home this weekend, as well as picturs from the ford catalog.

I just called Ed M. at Ford and he is out of the office till the 6th, but I'm sure he will call me back. In the meantime I am looking through my notes to find the Ph# of the production plant to get to the bottom of this. I also called FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE and, as you guessed, they said call the dealer because they can find out. I then asked whey they are called CUSTOMER SERVICE and the line fell silent!!!!!

Picked up my ST from the dealership today after having the tonneau cover installed, gas door looked at, and to reattach the left side of the molding on the tailgate.

After running a computer check, OASIS told the dealer he needed to order a new gas door to fix the problem. Hopefully this is correct? Dealership also ordered a new molding for the tailgate.

I think I like the tonneau cover so far, but the lock on the front section seems like it has something wrong with it. When trying to pull the key out of the lock, the whole lock kinda pulls out. I think I like the looks of the cover though. It is also very easy to remove! It doesn't seem heavy when lifting it, but when driving I can definitely tell the ST weighs a little more but seems to ride more solid. Watch out though--the dealership tried to charge me $84 for the installation of the cover. I had to run home to get the entire letter in order to prove this to them. They said they have charged this to other people who had a tonneau (w/$590 certificate) installed at Meginnis Ford in Lincoln, NE and were charged for install you should head back and be reimbursed.

Here's the scoop on the side windows ventvisors,Ford wants $73 for all 4 doors, Auto Ventshade gets $43. I believe they make them for Ford. The ventshade part # is 94074 which is the same part number as the regular Ford explorer,as a matter of fact it says Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer on the package, nothing about sport trac. They can be purchased at pepboys ,advanced auto parts, and anywhere else that sells Auto Ventshade Products.
PS. They sell a color coded bug deflector , but it doesn't appear available yet.

Just visited www.ventshade.com and their listing is as follows:

Hey Ya'll--I just got a tonneau cover letter!!!! I'm amazed because, one-I never wanted the cover, and two I thought the time was up. I haven't written in much, but I read every day...I have 2700 miles on him now--going to take for my free oil change next Friday, cause I'm off. I ordered May 9--VIN May 18--Build date June 12--delivered June 22. I have a loose step molding, just in the rear and the gas door rub, and I do have some small paint dings/dents like air holes. But that's it. He runs like a charm...averaging 17 MPG mostly city. Have the vent shields, did buy them at Pepboys. Want to get soft cover someday, no big hurry...if it's raining I just drop the seats and throw everything in the back, works out great. The offer for the hard T is good until Sept. 30. But I just really don't think I want one. I like the open bed. Want to get Brush guard, bed mat and maybe tint the front--but I'm happy for now.

One question to all with the problems with the bed mats....Why did you trim the nubs on the cage? why didn't you just cut a small whole in the mat? Keep writing....Keep Driving and all have a safe and happy Labor Day week-end. Peace
  • bennbbennb Member Posts: 143
I also have a back left passenger step molding that is loose. Inside the car, right? The plastic molding that says Explorer? I've messed with it a million times to keep it down and latched, but it just pops out. It's not a very big deal though.
  • stinhoutxstinhoutx Member Posts: 47
Very early on someone posted info on how to trace your shipment on railcar. Using that wonderful tip provided earlier on how to search( ;) )I found the post with the link:

    http://my.uprr.com/pub/pet/
This is for Union Pacific. But I couldn't find anything there so I went to www.google.com and did a search for "rail car tracking". After browsing a few links I ran across this one:

    http://ebusinesspilot.cn.ca/english/commerce/cartrace/
    This is for Canadian National.

You would probably need to use the legend to decipher the data. The report from Canadian National showed that it left KY for TX on 8/30 (built on 8/28 according to dealer).

You might be able to find some others if your truck is on one of the other railroads.

    Enjoy!
  • stinhoutxstinhoutx Member Posts: 47
The railroad company should be CSXT.

    Sorry.
  • stinhoutxstinhoutx Member Posts: 47
Okay, if you are really anxious to do this here are some hints.
Find the name of the railroad that owns the rail car-mine was Canadian National and that's why I found information there.
Use that information to determine which railroad updated the record-in my report it was CSTX
See if the railroad company also offers tracking-CSTX didn't offer public access to online query but did provide a TouchTone system, so I know the rail car is in St. Louis today.

    Woohoo!

This is a reply to Fordnut --
I am keeping the (5) 16-inch Wilderness tires
in my basement until Firestone or Ford
recalls the 16-inch. Hopefully I will
be reimburse on the tires, they only have
around 9,000 miles on them. And yes I
payed out of my pocket for the Michelin tires.

Also to Obr123 -- thanks for the advice

And thanks to all for the input on the site
    it has been helpful.

Has anybody been able to verify (ramarant)'s comment about the pioneer system?

And what is the DORA ?

Boy first it was the cover now the cd player !

Can't believe Ford would just put in a single CD player in just to get the truck shipped...... Or would they??????

Has anybody seen the pioneer system in any ST as of yet???? On the lot?????? Or some where?????

    Signed

Dberndt has been kind enough to take a picture of his Pioneer sound system (it is a Visteon head unit with Pioneer amp and speakers) and post it at Yahoo (that's the only way I would stop bothering him ;) )

My DORA was printed right off of the computer system our dealer uses.

No personal knocks here, but I usually wait a bit to hear from known-quality sources (rjK, et al) before getting too worked up by some things mentioned here. It could always be one of those Frontier or Quad Cab people sneaking around... :)

For what it's worth, I personally have had an overall satisfactory experience with my dealership. The folks have been attentive and amiable. Now it's probably not the same level of red carpet treatment as buying a Ferrari or Lambourghini, but should I expect more for $600 dollars over invoice? "But they get dealer holdback...." How much do folks spend on a new couch with the 300-400 percent markup? How many auto dealers have 50% and 75% off sales? A 2-3% margin is not much better than a grocery store.

So this is not to say there are no bad folks out there, or why would we have the BBB and Marvin Zindler(he's the guy that outed the Chicken Ranch-Best Little W****house in Texas and gives our nightly "slime in the ice machine" restaurant reports)? It is no more right to say all dealers suck as it is to say all dealers are great. I certainly do not enjoy dealing with my Chevy dealer, who's making his money off of service..Grrrr.

Be tough. Be fair. Be respectful. Be respectable.

Whoever has questions about the audiophile system -- fire away. My ST (delivered 8/30) has the system and I'd be glad to answer any of your questions. By the way, it is a nice system but I've been spoiled with nicer ones over the years...
  • droland1droland1 Member Posts: 1
I too have received the $590 offer for purchasing the tonneau cover. But I am not convinced I want it on my ST. Someone said it is removable. That is good. But is it watertight when installed? Also, how much "damage" (modification) does the dealer to the bed of the ST? Could someone give me some pros and cons? I am running out of time and if I don't do it now, I probably never will because they will probably double in price. Thanks!!
