gagrice, I think that hands off approach is a big part of the study and lots of the biologists don't want to "interfere".

"Tens of thousands of black brant geese now flock to the Arctic coast to munch marsh-loving vegetation growing along shorelines of thawed permafrost no longer safeguarded from saltwater storm surges by sea ice, according to new U.S. Geological Survey research announced Tuesday."

Research: Climate change good for Arctic geese (adn.com)

That has been my belief all along. Deal with whatever happens when it happens. The good and the bad. When we got smogged out in Los Angeles they determined it was the lead in our gas. That fixed the air until:

Like so many iconic American products, Los Angeles smog is now being made in China.

That's the finding of a new scientific study, which concluded that China's notoriously suffocating air pollution is now drifting over the Pacific Ocean and affecting the Western US.

Will Polar Bears become bigger and flourish IF GW is the new reality. I can tell you eating Caribou and goose is far better for them than seal, yuck. Add some roots and berries and they may get bigger than their brown cousins.

Polar bears have shifted to a diet of more land-based food in response to climate change and melting sea ice in the Arctic, new research finds.

The results suggest that polar bears, at least in the western Hudson Bay area, may be slightly more flexible in the face of climate change than previously thought.

"We found they were eating more of what is available on the land," including snow geese, eggs and caribou, said study co-author Linda Gormezano, a vertebrate biologist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Grolars and pizzlys will become more common.

Actually those sound like possible names for the new VW SUV. :D

**Don't forget to Sue Al Gore for his part in the GW Scam. I am sure the Chinese will want to sue the bunch of GW Yokels as well. **

"We will be seeking full cost recovery through insurers for the up to $2.4 million costs incurred by the Australian government," he said.

"We have a duty to protect life at sea and we do that willingly.

"However, what we see here is that there are some questions as to whether or not the ship was detained by the action of those on board within an area the captain had identified as potentially being subject to being frozen in.

"I think we have a duty on behalf of taxpayers to seek full cost recovery."

Hey, nothing like some good Mega-freezing weather to get me thinking about you guys! It was fun being here daily during the prior years.

Well just remember that no matter how cold your weather is, the data will show that 2014 will be the hottest year on record.

I saw Steve's Discover link regarding the sun. On there there was another link that kind of contradicts the thought that the Sun isn't the determining factor of the temperature of this planet, or anything else in the solar system.

    http://www.astrobio.net/pressrelease/5290/how-changes-in-the-sun-impact-earths-climate

You'll see this article describes how it would take hundreds of experts from various fields to put together the picture. It also mentions the multitudes of radiation sources that come from the Sun - UV, cosmic, x-rays, and plasma (coronal mass ejections - aurora). If you read thru the entire article, you'll also see that a mere 0.1% increase in solar activity, exceeds any other heat source that the Earth has, and that would include our small contribution to the creation/uptake of GHG.

Without the Sun the Earth is nothing but an iceball, near absolute-zero. The Sun keeps the Earth some 500F hotter than it otherwise would be! The Sun my friends - was, is, and will be, the determining factor of what happens on Earth.

Hey Kernick, good to see you! Not sure where your "Ancient Member" badge is but it should show up soon.

:D Yeah, I haven't been posting much in the last few years, as I've been having to spend more and more time cutting and splitting firewood. It now keeps me busy lugging it in the house, and tending the woodstove. Because it takes me more and more time, I can only surmise that the climate is getting colder! or ... I'm getting older and slower? Hmm.

It was 9 below here this morning - glad I'm not having to make trips to the woodshed!

To all our Southern members who have been suffering through the various maladies of the polar air - just remember it is only weather. And no matter how long or how cold it is, how unusual it is to have days of ice, the meteorologists will collect their data, and we'll find that you just had THE or ONE of THE hottest years ever. Don't trust what you see and feel, just believe what you're told.

    • If you're told there are WMD in Iraq, because the experts say there are - there are. If you're told the NSA is only collecting info. on terrorists - rest assured. If the Federal Reserve tells you what they are doing is in your best interest, and that the unemploment rate is 6.7% with little inflation - believe them. These guys are all experts. So why not believe environmentalists and scientists who make careers, and politicians who make fortunes, in believing we're making significant changes to the climate.
    • So everybody just keep reading how hot the climate is getting, and don't burn those articles to stay warm. Just believe what you're told.

You left out a couple of big whopping lies:

    1. Benghazi was caused by a spontaneous demonstration against a video!
    2. The IRS is NOT targeting conservative organizations !!

    Welcome back kernick.

I am also amused when you read that, say, in July or August, there may be a record-breaking day, hitting 104 or 105 degrees...and then they say it broke a record that has stood since 1921...well, if it was 103 in 1921, why wasn't that a cause for alarm???...why was it so hot back then, before we had all those SUVs and such???

Man-made global warming ( climate change, take your pick) is simply a scheme to tax us on something like carbon, so the UN can take more money from us in global taxes and give it to 3rd world dictators under the guise of giving it to the "poor"...don't forget how many bureaucrat hands will touch that money before 2% of it really gets to the poor...and the poor will be no better anyway, so giving money to the poor is a waste of time...

Your post reminds me of the best definition I ever heard for "foreign aid":

Foreign aid is where the poor people in a rich country send money to the rich people in a poor country.

Meanwhile, closer to the topic, it looks like people on both sides of the debate heard what they wanted to hear during the State of the Union speech earlier this week:
“The president is continuing to evolve,” said Jack Gerard, president of the American Petroleum Institute, in an interview after the speech ended.

“This year he gave a full-throated endorsement to natural gas” and said it is bringing down carbon pollution, Mr. Gerard said.

“Next year, he’ll be giving a full-throated endorsement to U.S. oil production.” Mr. Gerard added that the “broader message” of this year’s SOTU is that oil and natural play a key role in U.S. energy future. “His words are going in the right direction for us.”
