I have my bales all ready but our last frost date is May 8th. The weather service is predicting lows of 22 to 27 tonight, and the record low is 20°F. Cold Spring this year, so people who planted in the last warm spell or turned on their lawn sprinkler systems may have problems tonight. Not good news for the cherry crop either.
"Organic practices can be the single biggest way to mitigate climate change ... if all of America's 100 million hectares of cropland were converted to organic practices, it would be the equivalent of taking 217 million cars off the road."
We had one cold morning close to freezing that had me a bit worried. The bales seem to hold heat as well as moisture. My only problem is one bale keeps sprouting toadstools or mushrooms. I am not going to taste them to find out. I think it was the steer manure I soaked into the bales.
So how many bales of veggies will mitigate my Sequoia?
PS I ran drip lines to all my bales that are on a timer. Hope it all works while I am gone.
The current emissions from Kilauea volcano are greater in one day than all the power generation in the state of CA for a year. In 2006 CA reported 266.3 tons of SO2 from all facilities.
By comparison here is the latest from the volcano: The SO2 emission rate remains high; the most recent measurement (April 19) was 1210 tonnes/day
This is the major source of acid rain. They had an air quality alert yesterday on Maui because the air was not safe for those with any kind of asthma type conditions. Fortunately the trade winds carry the VOG to the opposite side of the island from me. It has caused problems as far away as Honolulu.
He is a bit smarter than I gave him credit for, but nowhere near as smart as he thinks he is. NO ONE is as smart as he thinks he is. 'Smug' ain't 'smart'.
This is a con-job committed upon the eager-to-be-conned. He saw this opportunity to remain mildly relevant and took it. There is as much evidence that we are in a cooling phase as the opposite. That is why the talking point evolved to 'climate change'.
As for vehicle emissions being the cause, it is utterly ludicrous. Perhaps if the Earth had not been heating and cooling all by itself for eons...
Maybe we could start a mutual funds company selling strawbale credits--sort of like Al Gore. We could make a video. Hey, maybe even a Nobel Prize. Or at least our company could make money. And maybe a company selling steer manure extract for people to soak into their bales...
I'm impressed with the drip setup. My gardener doesn't want to try the bale method. She has square foot garden plots and uses little greenhouses (large cranberry juice bottles) over her tender plants with the tops open to help them along early and protect them from cold nights. To hold heat in the bales maybe you could come up with a tent setup from plastic; the frame could be used campaign sign wires and plastic draped over that to hold in heat.
He saw this opportunity to remain mildly relevant and took it.
Al held the first congressional hearings on climate change in the late 1970s. (Concord Monitor). Say what you want, but he's hardly a Johnny Come Lately to the issue. Maybe it's more telling that a consummate politician like Gore hasn't flip-flopped on the issue for 30 years.
There's a company, Sungevity, that will evaluate solar potential and give you an install and pay back period quote/estimate by looking at your house on a satellite map plus some monthly electric bill info. Only in California though. Cutting down solar costs with satellite imagery (CNET).
The company site is down this am ... must be cloudy at their office. :P
I don't pay the electric anymore. The tenant pays all utilities. The bill went from $500 a month with the last renter that was a section 8 to less than $150 per month with a school teacher that pays her own electric. Amazing how people conserve when it comes out of their pocket.
The sad part is they could have cheaper electricity if not for superstition. There is an unlimited supply of geothermal source on this island. Just tap in and instant steam for power generation. It would also be far less GHG than oil and coal generation. Don't want to offend Pele.
Not to offend any cultural sensibilities, but where else to locate a geo thermo power generation set up than at a KNOWN geo thermo site???
It is sort of like saying there are plenty of permits available in the middle of the USA for desalination plants, whereas: no chance in hell in Malibu, gulf of mexico or the eastern seaboard!-right in real (salt) oceans!?
It is at its easiest, difficult to impossible to use alternative fuel sources when they will not let you use alternative fuel sources!!????? Or is that too logical?
Maybe it's more telling that a consummate politician like Gore hasn't flip-flopped on the issue for 30 years.
In the 1970s he was competing against the likes of Carl Sagan pushing his Nuclear Freeze or whatever. Gore did not get any air time until he lost the close election to Bush in 2000. I bought his Earth in the Balance for 1 penny on Amazon.com. Now you cannot buy a used copy in paperback for that amount. We did not even have hybrid cars in the 1990s and he was not being heard. Why is he making a killing now that we have a Republican in the WH? Or why didn't he push for less SUVs during his VP days? Could it be he did not want to upset the Dems apple cart? It looks like we have done a lot more for conservation in the last 7 years than the previous 8 years.
Yes he has had the same agenda for a lot of years. It took George Bush building an energy efficient home to move Gore off his GIGANTIC Carbon Footprint. He is still spewing out more CO2 than the average US citizen and getting away with it. I will consider additional measures when I see him park his moped in front of a cave.
In the 1970s he was competing against the likes of Carl Sagan pushing his Nuclear Freeze or whatever.
Gore wasn't competing with that. There had been a (natural) cooling trend starting about 1940 (with ever increasing CO2 emissions, btw!) and it wasn't until the 70s that the data indicated it was coming to an end. The global freezing crowd was just getting organized but it was derailed by reality. In the face of mounting evidence that mankind was not responsible for global cooling what's a political activist to do? Simple! Blame mankind for global warming.
Al has been lucky in that the warming trend lasted as long as it did - long enough to make a career of it along with lots of money and notoriety. Even as the upward trend in "global temperature" is peaking and possibly even reversing (yet again!), Mr. Gore stands to spend a few more years on the GW gravy train as the momentum of alarmism carries it forth. It is now a well-entrenched political movement that will continue to resist reality for some time to come.
If Al does not invest his $100 million in carbon credits he should be able to have a decent retirement... He may end up blowing a bunch on a sequel and lose it all. He is playing with the big boys in Hollywood that know how to extract money to fill their pockets. I wonder if anyone told him sequels rarely make as much money as the first movie.
I learned on a TV program that North Dakota has solved their CO2 emissions problem. They are sending their CO2 to Canada for getting oil out of shale in a couple of oil fields. Sounds like a plan.
While I am no big fan of Al Gore, President Bush has not been any great shakes either. I heard someone say this the other day:
"Bush is an oil man. Now if we had elected Colonel Sanders as President 4 years ago and the price of chicken tripled in the last 3 years, wouldn't we be just a little bit suspicious!"
So much for global warming. Earth Day festivities went ahead despite the blast of frigid weather yesterday.
Vendors and presenters from various eco-friendly groups, including Bullfrog Power, CO2 Reduction Edmonton and the local solar energy society, crammed into a lone tent in Hawrelak Park after a blizzard forced them to abandon their original locations.
Organizers crammed over 40 groups in a space that would normally be occupied by half that number. Presenters' booths were initially planned to have been spread out between at least five tents, with far larger displays.
Winter weather sets several records Vancouver Sun Published: Monday, April 21, 2008
All that April snow this weekend was more than surprising -- it was also record-setting.
The flakes that fell across the Vancouver region Friday night and Saturday represent the latest snowfall ever on record.
At its peak, the storm dumped 2.5 cm of snow at the Vancouver International Airport, with 8 cm at Lynn Valley and 30 cm at Mount Seymour. Vancouver Island recorded 6.4 cm of snow at Victoria International Airport by 11 a.m. Saturday -- more than any on an April day since 1940. But the big record dump came in Nanaimo, where the city hadn't seen measurable snow on April 19 since 1947. As of 11 a.m., 24 cm covered the ground at the airport.
TORONTO - The winter of 2005-2006 has been Canada's warmest on record and the federal agency Environment Canada said Monday it was investigating whether it's a sign of global warming.
Between December and February, the country was 3.9 degrees above normal — the warmest winter season since temperatures were first recorded in 1948. Environment Canada climatologist Bob Whitewood said it smashed the previous record set in 1987 by 0.9 degrees.
"We saw it coming from mid-January on that we were seeing something quite remarkable," Whitewood said.
The experience has been similar south of the border where the U.S. National Climatic Data Center said the winter has been the fifth warmest on record. December through February are considered meteorological winter.
It was especially balmy in Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, where temperatures were 6 to 8 degrees above normal.
Whitewood said the last 10 winters have been warmer than normal and along with this winter reflect a trend that could be explained as global warming. He said Environment Canada would spend the next year examining the data to see if it's an aberration or evidence of a trend.
While some Canadians have been delighted by the milder winter, many are disappointed about thinner ice for ice skating and hockey and less snow in the ski resorts. Several islands off Nova Scota were inundated by thousands of pregnant seals forced to give birth on shore by unusually mild weather that has prevented the Gulf of St. Lawrence from freezing.
One cold-ish winter out of the last 12 does not a trend make.
One cold-ish winter out of the last 12 does not a trend make.
No it sure does not. It does shoot the theory that man made GHG is causing an increased warming of the planet. We did not emit less this year than in 2006. These are GW cult members sitting out in a blizzard wandering what happened to there scientific facts that are no longer valid. Wishing they had driven their SUV to kind of warm things up. Couldn't snow on a better crowd.
Someone needs to tell Al Gore before he blows his $100 million in windfall profits on a new movie that no one will go to or believe.
It has to do with logic. IF we are having an affect on the climate. It does not make logically sense that we would experience the coldest winter on record in diverse places all over the earth. It also is very hard to explain the FACT that the ocean temperature has not gone up in the 10 years they have done measurements worldwide. In light of the FACT that the oceans are the largest factor in global climate.
Exactly. The local weather scientists (meteorologists) cannot get the weather right 24 hours in advance. So they have decided to predict the weather in 2100 when NONE of us will be here to say "Wrong again".
"...since temperatures were first recorded in 1948..."
1948? Boy, that's before the dinosaurs were born, right? Why look any farther, we have all the proof we need.
"...thousands of pregnant seals forced to give birth on shore..."
And I thought all those animals wouldn't be able to adapt and would go extinct. Guess the seals will survive. That just leaves all the polar bears drowning because they are falling through thin ice while hunting their preferred prey...seals.
Hey wait, why would polar bears be out on thin ice when all the seals are on shore? Maybe it's just the dumb ones who are drowning looking for seals where there aren't any. I guess all the smart ones are adapting too. That must be why the polar bear population is 5 times higher than it was in 1972.
Don't feel bad though. Some creatures did die on the thinning ice this year. A bunch of human seal hunters.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
That must be why the polar bear population is 5 times higher than it was in 1972.
Just like the whales, polar bears were hunted down to very small numbers. Since they limit the harvest of whales and polar bears they have made a great comeback. If they do not adapt to the change in climate, Oh Well. Same goes for those fat cats in there fancy homes hanging over a cliff at the seashore. Survival is part of nature. The weak die and go extinct. Raising my taxes to send to India and China as payment against further development is just plain crazy. Yet that is what the UN is proposing. Developing countries should receive massive infusions of money from the rich countries to develop ways to cut their carbon output.
That said, all the data in the World will not convince me that scientists can tell us what life on earth will be like 92 years from now as Al Gore would have you believe. It is a BIG money making scam that I refuse to fall for. Other than changing to CFLs, only because SDG&E subsidized them to 74 cents a piece.
Give me a 5 year or ten year trendline if you want me or anyone to believe we are in a "cooling period."
Will an eight year period work for you?
"Consider the simple fact, drawn from the official temperature records of the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, that for the years 1998-2005 global average temperature did not increase (there was actually a slight decrease, though not at a rate that differs significantly from zero). "
"Further buttressing the arguments for future cooling is the evidence from NASA satellites that the global temperature has actually fallen 0.04° F since 1979."
i can't understand how anyone would believe him, his energy bill is about four time that of the average household and is the spokesman for global warming, then he has the nerve to write a book called the attack on reason.... seems to me that he is the attack on reason.
I think this lays it out pretty well from your site:
Intellectually-dishonest debate tactics are typically employed by dishonest politicians, lawyers of guilty parties, dishonest salespeople, cads, cults, and others who are attempting to perpetrate a fraud
Eleven points made in the movie that is being forced onto our children were found to be lies or unfactual. How do you debate with those that refuse to give factual data. I admit that many of my posts in a debate are just my opinion. Based on experience or gut feeling. I am not the one that is trying to congregate a new religious cult based on getting rid of our main form of transportation, the automobile.
tidester - your second article is from 1998 apparently. Not sure it's significant today. Your first article is just an independent opinion of that one guy.
For all the charts and trends you can show that indicate cooling, I can find 10 that indicate warming. I guess it matters how the data is crunched.
I know for a fact that the state I live in is warming and has been lately - I posted a story of those facts a month or so ago. The only change? More people, more cars, more asphalt. There is no cooling trend in Phoenix, AZ. (Not meant to imply that GW is the cause.)
But I will say this: Just keep ignoring it fellas. When species start to disappear, coastlines are ravaged by higher sea levels, and heat waves and water shortages abound, maybe you'll remember how you ridiculed the thought of man affecting the environment and reconsider those actions. (Being a little over-dramatic here to better indicate my point.)
Inquiring minds want to know?..... Why do the ones who advocate everybody else "curb GW" live in one of the HOTTEST states???? Not that you didnt know it was hot as the BLAZES,, before you moved there and getting hotter!!???? Or perhaps you are hoping in your lifetime Phoenix, AZ will be prime beach front property? :shades:
You should do a reverse snow bird and move to upstate new york??
But I will say this: Just keep ignoring it fellas. When species start to disappear,
When you put into perspective that science believes that over 95% of all species are already extinct, that statement is pretty much meaningless. Or do you think the dinosaurs were driven to extinction by mankind?
I think the rest of your post is preaching to the choir. I do not know of any poster here that does not believe we should try to conserve on energy and not pollute anymore than is necessary to live our lives in some semblance of comfort.
My biggest complaint with the GW Cult is they want us to revert to levels of CO2 from 15-20 years ago. Without giving us a viable alternative. There are 100s or millions more people all wanting the lifestyle they see in America. We are the ones that splashed our decadence by satelite to the entire world. In fact it is the same media and Hollywood bozos that have enticed the rest of the world to Westernize. Now they want us all to move into a city and ride a bus to a job at Walmart. While the most verbal of the Cult live in luxury. Many in mega mansions overlooking the ocean they think may swallow them up. Well I say GOOD I hope it does.
Can't be blamed for where I live. I live here because of a dream job. Can't get this job in Buffalo. I do more than my share to curb my own carbon issues, as you know.
P.S. Looking into a grid-tie Solar Panel system for my home. Total cost to me around $19K, with an eight year payoff, will contribute 90% of my existing usage. Will also power my PHEV when I get a chance to buy one.
"Can't be blamed for where I live. I live here because of a dream job. Can't get this job in Buffalo. I do more than my share to curb my own carbon issues, as you know. "
Surprise surprise!!! Most of New York is in a state of arrested decay!! They could actually benefit FROM the less than proven GLOBAL WARNING!! Shoot the monthly power bills can be more than the mortgage!!!
(this might not sit well with too many NY ers, but hey those residents have been leaving NY (in droves) for literally going on the second generation, since my nexus with the historic state).
I for one would not question that you indeed try and/or do limit your "CARBON" foot print!! (whatever that has come to mean)
..."P.S. Looking into a grid-tie Solar Panel system for my home. Total cost to me around $19K, with an eight year payoff, will contribute 90% of my existing usage. Will also power my PHEV when I get a chance to buy one. "....
Presumably if I am not off topic, I think your quote is GREAT!! For the amount of energy that would provide, you will be so called "off the grid." However the problem is with many others doing this, the TAXING authorities will be NONE too pleased; as it disturbs the cash flow they have come to become addicted and downstream have probably already over committed in bond offerings. It is almost considered a RIGHT!!!
I am not sure how it is in AZ, but (in CA) out of a 4 page gas and electric bill, fully 2 pages describes the literally multiple layers of TAXATION !!!! One page describe all the "give aways" . I can literally not use ANY of those products, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA and the MAJORITY of the monthly bill would still be due and payable.
On the other side of this, China is using both coal and petro products (literally like there is no tomorrow ,not to add to the end of the world scenarios) and their fuel prices are (subsidized) capped @ 2.80 or so. Their economy is literally creating a whole new middle class from literally poverty and more BILLIONAIRES (relatively) than America has ,given its longer, legendary and storied existence!!!!!
But I will say this: Just keep ignoring it fellas.
Keep ignoring what exactly? That temperatures fluctuate? Of course they do. Why do you ignore the facts that the "science" may be seriously flawed and that it is certainly highly politicized?
maybe you'll remember how you ridiculed the thought of man affecting the environment...
Ridicule isn't in the equation. Simply put, extraordinary claims require real evidence. I don't think that is asking too much.
Keep ignoring the possibility that man DOES have something to do with global climate patterns.
And Al Gore and his GW stuff has been ridiculed on this forum, and so have I.
Nothing "extraordinary" about showing data (historical temperature data which some on this board have foolishly doubted) which indicates that the USA has been warmer than the norm for 19 of the last 25 years. I, unlike some people here, realize that actual historical temperature data IS real evidence.
Indeed might be the sound of one hand clapping. If you overlay the previous 25-50 years (previously the environmental elite preached against the ills of global COOLING ( winter), indeed it might be a NET NET NET loss of temp.
We are the ones that splashed our decadence by satellite to the entire world
And beyond to the entire universe. In fact, it looks like we may have some far flung visitors trying to move in and adopt our lifestyle as well. (opednews.com). Hang on to your hat, Lars. :shades:
And one more from CNN filed under unintended consequences:
"Those battling global warming by promoting biofuels may unintentionally be adding to skyrocketing world food prices, creating what one expert calls "a silent tsunami" in developing nations."
"And Al Gore and his GW stuff has been ridiculed on this forum, and so have I."
Oh you've noticed that have you? Finally!
So, why do you figure it is that you've been ridiculed? I don't suppose it could have anything to do with your preachy attitude and the arrogant assumptions that you've posted on this and other discussions, could it?
The truth is that nobody really knows if the human influence on our planet is artificially making it heat up, cool down or having absolutely no affect what-so-ever, and that includes you and Al Gore. Like it or not, there is significant evidence to support both arguments.
Now for a more moderate tone; while I personally believe that the human factor with regards to Global Warming is so negligible it is impossible to measure, I also believe that we should clean our act up for many-many reasons.
Keep ignoring the possibility that man DOES have something to do with global climate patterns.
No one ignores the possibility. The problem is that the data, physics and analysis do not support that hypothesis and, in fact, tend to refute it. Unfortunately, "advocates" dismiss it out of hand possibly to everyone's detriment.
historical temperature data which some on this board have foolishly doubted
Foolish? Isn't that a bit elitist? And it looks like we're back to cherry picking.
If it's "elitist" to call someone "foolishly wrong" then pigeon-hole me there. Anyone who doubts the validity of historical temperature data, TO ME, is not assessing things logically.
Be they smart, dumb, old, young, rich, poor, educated, GED-challenged, 180 IQ, or whatever.
If you use a desecration of commonly established FACTS to try to prove a point, then that is a FOOLISHLY argued point, hopefully in ANYONE'S view.
Name me or show me one globally-known, peer-respected climate scientist who challenges the historical temperature data as being wrong. Is or is not the record for San Diego's highest temperature ever 111 degrees in September of 1963?
"Is or is not the record for San Diego's highest temperature ever 111 degrees in September of 1963?"
I'm thinking NOT. How long have weather records been kept for San Diego? One hundred and fifty years maybe? While 111 degrees might be a record over the period of recorded history, and as such it might well be statistically interesting; it is also statistically irrelevant given the millions of years of weather history we don't have for the San Diego area.

(There IS a problem with global warming )
Or how about this one with a 29 year trendline?
"Further buttressing the arguments for future cooling is the evidence from NASA satellites that the global temperature has actually fallen 0.04° F since 1979."
(National Policy Analysis: Sun to blame)
Perhaps you would care to explain the "consensus" here?
"It is not the man, but the measure, that is the subject of debate."
Some guy named Reed
Seems like more ad hominem stuff occurs in here than debate sometimes. 'bout time to drag Newt's name back into the fray? :shades:
Intellectually-dishonest debate tactics are typically employed by dishonest politicians, lawyers of guilty parties, dishonest salespeople, cads, cults, and others who are attempting to perpetrate a fraud
Eleven points made in the movie that is being forced onto our children were found to be lies or unfactual. How do you debate with those that refuse to give factual data. I admit that many of my posts in a debate are just my opinion. Based on experience or gut feeling. I am not the one that is trying to congregate a new religious cult based on getting rid of our main form of transportation, the automobile.
You should do a reverse snow bird and move to upstate new york??
How is that for dramatic?
P.S. Looking into a grid-tie Solar Panel system for my home. Total cost to me around $19K, with an eight year payoff, will contribute 90% of my existing usage. Will also power my PHEV when I get a chance to buy one.
And beyond to the entire universe. In fact, it looks like we may have some far flung visitors trying to move in and adopt our lifestyle as well. (opednews.com). Hang on to your hat, Lars. :shades:
In other dramatic news, Smog can kill you. (CNN)
And one more from CNN filed under unintended consequences:
"Those battling global warming by promoting biofuels may unintentionally be adding to skyrocketing world food prices, creating what one expert calls "a silent tsunami" in developing nations."
Food crisis 'a silent tsunami'
Or maybe not:
Corn-based biofuel myth (Treehugger.com)
No price too high for a carbon "LESS" world?!! :lemon:
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460

Shipo
No one ignores the possibility. The problem is that the data, physics and analysis do not support that hypothesis and, in fact, tend to refute it. Unfortunately, "advocates" dismiss it out of hand possibly to everyone's detriment.
historical temperature data which some on this board have foolishly doubted
Foolish? Isn't that a bit elitist? And it looks like we're back to cherry picking.
I'm thinking NOT. How long have weather records been kept for San Diego? One hundred and fifty years maybe? While 111 degrees might be a record over the period of recorded history, and as such it might well be statistically interesting; it is also statistically irrelevant given the millions of years of weather history we don't have for the San Diego area.
Best Regards,
Shipo
