here is the list that I've gathered by asking already.
* = top choices

CRV*, RAV4*, Forester, Element*, 4runner, Outback, Xterra,Pilot, pathfinder*, highlander*

What I want.
-Reliability. Other then usually upkeep, I dont want a vehicle with known issues that add up $$$
-potentially 100k miles more life. So 100k-170k miles depending on vehicle
-Decent clearance and either 4wd or awd.
Why? Not for rockclimbing or extreme offroading. For rough dirt roads in mtns and snow + mud. West NC mainly. So a decent awd would probably work. get from point A to B all year with confidence.
-Okay fuel economy. Its a SUV so not getting a civcs fuel economy lol. But I dont want something really bad fuel economy.
-Car Camping. Im 5'11". I think all vehicles would work. Some with more modifications then others.
-Automatic trans
I want to make some comments on the vehicles I've listed.

CRV vs Element vs RAV4 are consistently my tops choices at the moment.
RAV6 with v6 engine would be nice, but from looking they are harder to come by.
From what I've read RAV6 is better offroad then the CRV and I imagine the Element as well.
I've read that the CRV is a little underpowered and the awd isnt that good. Im sure the Element isnt much better, but the cargo space is nice. All three seem to be easiest to find in my price point for around 150K miles.

Subaru Forester and Outbook. AWD is known to be great on these! Reliability is my concern. Heard so many stories of head gasket issues and more. Many saying things just started falling apart after 125k miles. Honda and Toyota seem to win out on reliability here. They seem great, but I really am worried about reliability.

4runners are near impossible to find in my price for what I want. These are iconic, but I see 200K+ go for up to $10K. I dont necessarily needs all the power either, but I wouldnt complain.

Xterra seem to have reliability issues.

Pilot, Pathfinder, Highlander are my larger top lists. Fuel economy would probably be worse. And its not has easy to find options compared to the RAV4, CRV, or element. But more room.

So there is my thoughts and I am confused at the point. I live in Raliegh-Durham, so I actually have good options, and If Im willing to drive a couple hours even more.

Currently on CRV vs Element vs RAV4 mostly, but Im keeping my eyes open on other vehicles.

This will be my daily driver, but also my vehicle for adventures.

Thoughts?

I agree that the crv/Element/RAV are not ideal candidates for more serious off roading. More "soft roading".

Condition and maintenance history is usually more important in this price range. So even a "safe" choice could be a bad purchase if it was beaten up and not maintained.

the Xterra could be a good option. Not as expensive as a 4runner (I don't think) but good off road (it is a truck).

Ive heard of transmission/radiator issues with the 2005-2010 xterras. They seem like neat SUVs.
Im not very handy with a car. Not afraid to do some work, but the reliability of a Honda or Toyota is ideal.

Again, I am just not sure how serious of an offroader I need. An xterra may be more then I need. I imagine one of those three SUVs you mentioned with the right wheels might be enough, but its hard to know. Cant lie it would be nice to have the extra capability, but not sure I need it.

the Pathfinder is very practical. My neighbor has one. Just needs to be the prior boxy style that is still on the truck chassis. Similar to an Xterra, but a lot roomier.

1995 was the last year for that model Pathfinder.

no, not that one. The 3rd generation (2005-2012) when they went back to body on frame (basically a Frontier underneath).

This one actually looks perfect for the OP!
