My first (and second, and third) thought is for you to get a Subaru. It's practically the state car in VT, so finding a clean example in your budget ought not to be too hard.

that you so much for the response! doing research that's what i was thinking as well but also thinking about the Volkswagen alltrack as another option. What's your opinion?

Used Subarus are too expensive for what you get, IMHO. And their reliability is similar to the Europeans.

I think Hyun/Kia are good to focus on. You’d get one fairly young with low miles, and possibly even CPO. I also like the Tiguan. I don’t know your space needs, but there are many CPO Chevy Trax abound. If you are a bit braver, the Jeep Renegade or Fiat 500X are pretty inexpensive.

I agree on the Subaru. You don’t say where in VT you are located but there’s a couple of dealers on Rt. 7 in N. Ferrisburgh that seem to specialize in them.

A Subie should fill all your needs and be an easy sell on the local car market when you’re done with it.

Oh, I meant to mention the Countryman, too. I've seen those relatively cheap by me.

    An escape with snow tires.

Subaru is the obvious choice but resale prices are often silly, but there is a reason for that.

    Hyundai Tucson. Good little cars.

The All Track is an excellent choice, and a relative bargain in the used market. I was looking at one with about 31K miles for about $18K (good price for an SE model). The S is bare bones; go SE or SEL.

Tiguan is all right, but if you care about dynamics and performance, the All Track is the way to go even though it has the smaller engine; it has a better chassis, better transmission, is tunable, and a lot lighter.
