Can a dealer back out of the agreed-upon price for a factory built vehicle after you pay a deposit?

I ask because I visited one last dealer today to see if they could top the offer I received from another dealer for a factory-built Rav4 hybrid. Today's dealer could not match that price but also said that even if they factory ordered a car for me the price might change by the time the car was ready and that I'd be obligated to pay the new price. - This sounds fishy. Is it right? I'm thinking that if I accept the offer given on the pricing sheet and pay a deposit, then the dealer must honor that price. - Sorry for all the questions but this is my first time buying a new car.

They aren't obligated to sell it to you, and you aren't obligated to buy it. Don't agree to deals like that.

If you want a good deal on a car, find one on the lot that you can buy, today.

The problem is there are no cars on the lot at a good price, according to the Edmunds and other tracker. So if I have to pay a hefty price tag it might as well be for something I like.

As it turned out, I decided to go ahead and get a factory-built Rav4 Hybrid to my specifications. The dealer did, indeed, honor the agreed upon price. I've had the car two months and am glad I didn't settle for what was on the lot. So, just saying, I wouldn't dismiss this option.

    Thanks for the update!
