    I actually saw a lifted Suzuki the other day ont he highway. Had about a 6" lift job on it....like that is stable. I was laughing my head off at the thing, but from the sounds of it no trail would stop the thing.

    Is there a site that talks about those changes for the upcoming models? I would really like to look at some of that stuff too. Word on the street is that tacomas are gonna be getting a turbo diesel by Duramax in the near future, but that is just heresay. Also, I think that f150 FX4 is tight. It would be a tuffy to decide between that and a Z71 for me, though. Both roomy and good looking. Peace

    I'm not comparing anything. It would be unreasonable to compare anything fullsized to anything Toyota. It would, shall we say, an exercise in futility.

    If in your opinion, you believe that I've been comparing, I recommend that you reread my posts as I've only posted for the benefit of Pluto and have not done any comparisons.

    obyone, i probably had read only about 1% of your posts and there were enough cases where you had made comparison of full size gm to tacoma . Does your Dec 12, 2001 post refresh your memory ?

    You guys have BOTH been comparing your obviously different vehicles since I joined this forum a month ago.You both seem to have strong animosity for the maker of the other's truck,without understanding the market/use for these trucks.I am either half as smart or twice as smart as each of you.I have(and need) one of each,and BOTH are great trucks.Now why cant you boys play nice!

    You call that a comparison? doh!!! Don't think so...what it actuallly is a dig on Pluto. Now if we were to compare HP, load ratings, torque, gas mileage and so on and so forth, then yes we are comparing.

    The entertainment was cheap and lasted for a month...what more could anyone ask for?

    BTW, does anyone know what the improvement was to the later model Tacomas for it to earn a three star rating? I know someone mentioned a side impact beam but wasn't sure.

    Besides, he doesn't even belong in this thread, which is for Tacoma and Ranger owners. A more suitable place for him would be the Chevy lemon/Chevy problems threads.

    While I admit my debate on the other thread with this guy was getting out of hand, at least I had the decency to contain the debate in one thread and not all over the boards.

    I guess obyone would love to see all the Toyota threads discontinued, as they irritate him to no end hearing about all these great Toyotas while he sulks at the Chevy dealership 4 months waiting for repairs...

    No response is needed, obyone. I don't have anything else to say to someone who compares Tacomas to 2500 Heavy Dutys.

    like, here are some pictures. Same year, same package (SR5 V6 with TRD), exact same colors (white with black bumper, grill and mirrors) and NO black strips along the side of the body. Even the interior appears to be the same color (gray).

    The only thing that is different is the picture's truck has a bug-guard on the hood (mine doesn't) and I have BF Goodrich All-terrain TAKOs (31"). And I have a plain-Jane white license plate. Sharp looking truck, wouldn't you agree? I have to say in real life, my truck seems to sit higher than how it appears in the pictures.

    i had to take my ranger in for tranny service and tire rotation...i put some of the wrong kind of tranny fluid in it. they said that it would void the warranty if Ford found out, so they simply put "tranny serviced" on the receipt, and agreed to tell ford that i simply had it done early! they got me in hours after i originally called them, and the dealership didnt have the filter in so they gave me a rental for the night, paid for the rental, and when i mentioned that i had some tranny fluid at home, they said they'd use it. since i had paid for the fluid already, they rotated my tires for free! i then decided to buy a hat i saw in their shop, but the registers were closed that time of night. they lady not only remembered what hat i wanted, the next day when i went in, it was already on my invoice and in my truck! these people are great to deal with, and its nice to see such awesome customer service...they just earned a lifetime customer.

    think Toyota's dealerships would do this? I know its subjective, but damn, what a great bunch of people! by the way, all that cost me only $128 bucks.

    are probably overall th same as the others, but I think the decisive factor is the service personnel. For a while, I had nothing but good experience with a particular dealership (Red McComb's Toyota in San Antonio) but there was a turn-over with their service writers. The new ones are HORRIBLE (especially "Melissa") and I haven't been back since. The worst experience I've EVER had was at Ram Country in Del Rio, TX. I took the truck in for an alignment and it was returned to me with 54 more miles on the odometer and the interior reeked of cigarette smoke. When I registered a formal complaint, their general manager said something to the effect of "Well, don't expect royal treatment - you didn't buy your truck from us!" I attribute this experience to the trash that works at that dealership, but I should also mention they sell Chrysler products, too, so the same service is probably extended to Chrysler owners. But, I don't get mad, I get even, hehe. No details!

    I think it's kind of impossible to single out Toyota dealerships as having bad service, because these same dealerships usually also sell other makes as well. I'm sure there are dealerships out there with both Toyotas and Fords on their lot, just like good old Ram Country, with its Toyotas and Chryslers.

    Dealership has great service. They won't let you leave until they wash the exterior and clean the interior, even for just an oil change. I have no problem with that. For a while I thought my old Acura dealer only did that.

    It all depends on the ownership and staff, not the brand of vehicle.

    i know i may catch hell for saying this, but it was a damn hard choice between the ranger and tacoma. i chose my ranger because it had exactly what i wanted on it and was the perfect color, and they cut me a heck of a deal on it.
    i think if i had a few more dollars to spend i would have gone with the tacoma...my only complaints were that it had a "plastic-y interior", not like the rubberized stuff in my ranger, and also the interior simply seemed cramped to me. i know they're almost the same size inside, but the ranger fit my needs better. sure would like that better mileage with the toyota, though! lol...
    btw pluto, we each made a choice that fit our needs and threw in a little bit of personal taste for good measure. i dont see the need to yell at you or call you names. and you didnt call me anything either, lol...imagine that, a mean nasty Toyota owner posting without an insult! j/k

    unless provoked! I think many Toyota truck owners can attest to the fact that they put up more than their share of flak from the Big 3 boys, though. I personally find it amusing, though, the comments made by some people towards my "mini-truck." Funny they never mention Rangers or S-10s.

    In my experience, it doesn't really matter if a dealership is Ford, Toyota, Chevy, whatever. Some are good and some are bad. actually, most are bad, some are good.

    we do take a lot of abuse in our toyotas from big three owners(especially chevy in my experiance)but we don't need to get defensive,or insult people.A lot of people who drive full sized trucks have never been on a jeep trail and don't know there are no S-10s or Rangers there.But you can't compare GM build quality to toyota's until toyota builds something comparable.By that I mean at least 4 more inches of cab length,3 more litres under the hood and especially 2000 more payload.

    -I don't get it. The tacoma and the S10 are very comparable in each of those categories.

    we all know how the s-10 and sonoma would do in comparison! lol
    the s-10 doesnt even compare well to Ranger, Dakota, or Frontier in quality or refinement, let alone Tacoma.
    I am a fan of Ford and Chevy, but I have to admit when an import kicks their [non-permissible content removed].

    I own both the taco and ranger. The ranger has a truck feel which adds to the illusion of a big truck ride. The Taco feels more like a car and it's much more responsive. I've had a few problems with the Ranger regarding engine knocking which is listed as a TSB. No problems yet with the Taco. By the way the 3.0 lit on the Ranger is a gas sucking COW!!

    I was refering to the silverado-tacoma debate.Yes the taco and s10 are very comcarable in those categories and Toyota got my small truck money.But where were they when I needed a big truck?
    OBYONE:I skied on the big island in 74 and 75 do they still operate a resort there?

    sorry, I forgot about the tacoma-silverado argument. Actually, I think the Tundra compares pretty favorably to the rest of the 1/2 tons. But you're right, if heavy duty is what you need than Toyota doesn't have an answer. (yet)

    The Big Island's west or Kona coast has several major hotels, one of which has a AAA Five Diamond award and another with the Four Diamond. Guess that's why they call it the gold coast. Stayed ther for a weekend of golf...with preferred kamaaina (local) rates...still costing over $1500 for the weekend.

    for the info.I stay away from 4 and 5 star resorts because with long hair and many tatoos I don't get the service I pay for.When I was in Hilo there was a ski club that used a suburban for a ski lift on Mauna Kea.in the 70's they had plans for a hotel and ski lift but I can't find any info and I don't remember the name of the club.

    They have groups being shuttled up to Mauna Kea for snow boarding. Couple of weeks ago a group of high school kids made the trek to do some snowboarding. A 17 year old girl came down the slope, loss control, and ended up head first into the lava. She has to undergo many reconstructive surgeries, not including the one to remove bone fragments from her brain. Luckily, she sustained no brain damage.....Can't remember the name of the shuttle service that the kids used. What they don't tell the people is that you can't steer a boogie board on the snow.

    drove a nissan cc today, lets just say im NOT going to get one of those. im used to my over 200 horses, and it just didn't have the balls.....SO i went and drove a toyota dc, did i just say that? okay, i loved it. its the only cc truck out there i like (god, how i wish my ranger was a cc). but here's the thing, i don't want a real loaded one, and every one on the lot had the trd pkg. i do not want this. i just want (if i do get one) SR5, convenience group, steel wheels, abs, and locker. according to yahoo, somewhere around 24000 msrp. about 22000 invoice. i figure the locker is really the only thing one would need off-road, i don't want the harsh ride the trd offers, and i happen to like the silver steel wheels with the impulse red paint. whatever i do, i do not want to pay much over invoice for one. my ranger is officially for sale right now and i really don't know what i will do if i sell it fast. anyone know about buying a truck over the net?

    my comments about the tacoma's frame were just comments i read on the frontier site- people claiming they have seen this happen. you gotta admit, the frontier is pretty solid of a truck, its frame is fully boxed. but, you're right pluto (did i just say that too?) there is an awful lot of plastic on it. i can picture it (an XE which comes with 15" wheels) with 31's on it, but id have to see it before i bought it. i think it would be fun to really test you toyota guys' theory of toyota trucks outlasting others.

    I think the Explorer sport track has similar dimensions as the Tacoma double-cab, and you could probably get the 4.0L engine with it..

    Also, can you order the truck you want through the dealer? Obviously with Fords you can, I thought you could do the same with the Toyota.

    I've ordered a truck I wanted through the dealer, and even though it was promised to be 2-3 weeks before it'd arrive, it got there in 3 days. So give that a try, you are not obligated to purchase the truck anyway (Dealer gave me a truck to drive for a week after I sold my old car, and I still could have with something else).

    but the sport trac, imo, is soooo ugly.

    every dealer ive talked to wants a deposit to order one. and the dealer i talked to, said it may take 3 mos to get the truck. i will get more serious about it when i sell mine. i may not be able to move it, with no snow, 4x4's are an afterthought to many that would otherwise see their potential in winter driving. we'll see...

    They do not cash your deposit check until you decide to buy the truck. So in a sense you are putting nothing down.

    It doesn't seem to thrill Toyota dealers but they'll order you what you want if they have too. The dealer I got mine at here in Calif. offered to order whatever I wanted before I found one I liked on the lot. I've heard good things about carsdirect.com too if you want to get one on the net.

    Glad you liked it man. If anybody flames you for your decision, dont worry about it (some might). I had to get the dealer to locate me my truck. I wanted an prerunner with the locker but no TRD, too. I like my decision. The truck was found and delivered b4 I even had time to pick it up. Not sure about your location, but here the non TRD trucks can be found with a little work. Good luck - i know those "stealers" can be a pain. What exactly did you like so much about it? Does the DC feel sluggish cuz of its increased weight, ive never ridden in one? L8r man.

    i liked it cuz it felt a lot like my ranger to be honest. real tight, a little slower and not as torquey, but the tranny seemed smoother. that's probably due to the fact i have a 5-spd auto. and it shifts one more time between 2nd and 3rd, as compared to an auto 4spd. rode a lot like my ranger, rather harsh, but it had the trd. its still up in the air right now. i may not be able to sell mine for what i owe anytime soon. so if that happens, ill just drive it all summer until august when the '03's are out. i don't have to sell it now, but i just want the room. we have a baby due to arrive in august. but for the time being, we can all fit in it. its rather tight though. ill dump it if i can though. i may list it on ebay tonight. i have to check to see what trucks are there and what people are bidding on. so watch ebay if you want to see my truck. its bright island blue, a cool color ford stopped producing last november. later...

    I hate to nit pick. You stated that you don't need a spell checker for the sixth grade level of the Edmunds truck forums, which I respect. Forgive me for the reminder, but every sentence begins with a capital letter. That's one of my annoyances.

    thats a good point. but it takes time to hit the shift key every sentence. so thats the reason i dont bother. i usually dont include apostrophes in my contractions either, but i always like to think i spell each word correctly. i can usually spot a misspelled word a mile away. but there are those words that are second nature, and then you type them and they just dont look right.

    sad- thank you. i try and keep it nice. i have to say that is one of the coolest looking rangers ever from the front with the right tires sticking out and shot from the right angle. its just too bad ford didn't build a crew cab. i just hope i get some bids.
