It was just after I started reading Edmunds. You bragged it was about as long a title as you could get away with. :<)

The son of my neighbor is home for the Holidays, he is about 22 years old, he has been away from home about 2 years. He grew up in a 100% Ford family.

He just bought a new F-150 (only has 300 miles on it) - he saw I had bought a new truck since he has been home so he came over and ask me how I liked my truck.

He then went on to educate me about trucks -the Chevy is a nice truck, he looked at one before he bought the F-150, but Fords are better - they never break down , bla, bla, bla. He knows he will keep this truck for 10 years and by then it will have 150,000 miles on it but it will still run like a new one.

Then his wife comes out, they get in the truck to leave -

The loudest backfire I have ever heard - followed by clouds of white smoke. Engine sputters to a stop. He tries to start the Ford until battery is dead with no luck. I thought about saying something smart [non-permissible content removed] - but when he got out of the truck he slammed the door so hard it shattered the glass in the door. I almost choked trying to hold in the laughter.

I know this can happen with any brand of truck, but 10 seconds after you brag about how great the reliability of your truck is to have it break down is adding insult to injury.

I will give Ford some credit - the tow truck came and hauled F-150 way within 3 hours - not bad for a Sunday (New Years Eve to boot)

I'm surprised you were able to hear it over your Shakerado's crankshaft knocking. You know that Chevy forgot how to machine crankshafts when they built your truck.

Maybe so, but it's the 4.7L Toymota that has managed several complete metamorphis to shrapnel. Shall I post the link again to Tundra Solutions?

If anyone is interested I just found a picture of the 2002 Ram crewcab. A variation of their concept powerwagon. With the new Hemi engines coming out as well, it looks like Dodge is back in the race for having an up-to-date pickup. The negative remarks I have read on this site about the quality of the workmanship is the only thing I am concerned about.

rollout? Up to date pickup, takes more than just the engine or driveline. In other words, it will take more than a new engine to revive that dead horse called Dodge.

Thats just a mock-up of the concept PowerWagon Dodge showed at last year's autoshow. Dodge has kept a tight lip on the new Ram and there's not any pictures floating around except mock-ups. Personally, I like this one better.

Right now Dodge with its 7 year old body has the most attractive styling and most comfortable interior. 4 Wheel disks have already been put on the heavy duty series and I'm quite sure the new 1500 will have them. Besides the less efficient engines, they are not behind. If the new engines are what they claim to be, what exactly do you feel they lack in?

I thought the Dodge was a RAM without horns....anyway,
am eagerly awaiting the new GERMAN DODGE, Dakota
has comfortable seats but now I prefer a real one (full size). Enough already with the minis...owned too many of them,
need more room to carry more people....

    Hopefully,
All the legal problems will be resolved and the Germans will bring quality design and manufacturing to the former Dodge. Just as you look forward to the new German Dodge, the chevy fans secrectly hope the Toyota/GM partnership will improve the quality of their current CR "vehicles to avoid"

Toyota/GM NUMMI plant in Fremont, Ca should be turning out GM/CHEVY trucks instead of just Toyotas... must be those ROBOTIC arms that get tired or over zealous like they did when they over torqued several thousand heads and
damaged the head gaskets on fourrunners several years back. Toyota made good on that but it was interesting how the ROBOTS software corrected the tightening of the heads, at least that was one of the stories from the INTERNET. I
printed out that article, must have mis filed it....
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Still waiting on the 4 wheel disks and more efficient motors. The 4.7 in the Dakota I rented was pretty good. Waiting to see what else Dodge has to offer with the new German influence.

Not so sure on that 7 year old styling part though as it's very subjective. I'm sure the new Dodges will look more like a MB. Your thoughts....

The 2002 Ram was well underway prior to the "merge". You will find little or no influence on the new 1500 series. The 2500 and 3500 series may be different story as mercedes has made it clear that one of its objectives is to utilize some of its products such as transmissions and possibly the diesel. The mercedes deisel may be good but you don't mess with the dodge/cummins combination. The brakes on the 1500 were merely answering market demands.

This is not a case of brand loyalty or emotions, just the facts.General Motors new pickups have the advantage right now.More powerful engines with better horsepower and torque,4 wheel Disc brakes standard,a choice of 7 different suspension packages.Anyone who thinks that GM is not putting out a superior pickup truck is just rooting for the underdogs. While it is certainly true that Ford has come a long way from the poor products they sold in the 70's and 80's and Chryslers truck division has improved, currently neither of these companies offer a better truck than the GMC full size models. While the foreign nameplates offer the probability of high mileage they offer the downside of expensive and specialized repairs when the warranty runs out. They are also much smaller and less durable in a true heavy duty use environment. While all manufacterers are plauged with occassional recalls and service bulletins, General Motors will once again be the most desirable new and used pickup truck as people continue to place thier confidence in GM's reputation for reliability.Ford has its share of the market and gets some repeat sales by offering a good initial value, however they are still second fiddle.Dodge pickups look good and may entice you when they are new, however they are not reliable and always depriciate the most. Its your checkbook.

Check those resale numbers on Dodge. As a percentage of new cost Dodge has been #1 for some time now. My Ram has 45,000 miles and has been problem free. Regarding the Silverado/Sierra- One of the guys that I work with daily talked about getting his new Sierra for prbably 6 months before he did about 4 months ago. Last weeks I asked him how pleased he was with his truck. I expected this GM fan to say how great it was but instead. "Big mistake, the noises, rattles and cluncking are driving me nuts" Apparently the truck has rearend problems with less than 4,000 miles on the clock. Interior trim pieces and the door seal has fallen off. He said that for the money he wishes he had his '89 Ford back.
