under the battery tray there is a actuator that pulls the front deferential into gear.. check the vacuum lines to the actuator and the cable from it .. sounds like that seems to be your problem
My problem seems to be unique. My 98 S10 will go into 4 wheel high or low with no issues under any condition. However, it will not go back into 2 wheel drive unless the trauck has sat and cooled. Then, at that point it will go right back in. Any ideas?
I have a 2003 ZR2, when i get on the freeway and get above 65mph after about 5 min. i will here a high pitch whine and when i start to slow down and pull over the whine gets louder and sounds more like a grinding sound but then i will hit the 4hi button and the grinding stops so i just keep driving down the freeway for a few seconds and hit the 2hi button and it goes back into 2hi and i don't here the whine anymore until i get about 1 mile down the highway it starts whining again and i have to hit the 4hi button again to make it stop. Am i loosing vacuum? is something trying to disengage? i have a brand new vacuum actuator and 4 wheel drive works great when i need it but even before the old actuator went bad i had this problem with the truck wanting to disengage while driving on the freeway.help.
yesterday i had to put my truck into 4lo to get up a hill in my yard. once i got to the top it wouldnt shift back into 2hi it feels like something was pushing back when i tryed to push on the shifter. it would shift into neutral on the 4x4 shifter and drive forward while in the neutral position and it will go into 4hi but wont shift out of first unless you did it manually then it only goes up to 3rd. it also makes a quick grind sound when you put it into park and when going forward and reverse it will shift hard
My 2001 Sonoma will suddenly engage 4X4 Hi as I am driving down the highway at 60 MPH. When I pull over I can get it to go back into 2W drive, but it might happen again in a mile, or in 20 miles. It truly is in 4 wheel drive, I can tell when I turn the front wheels, and have to back up to get 4X4 Hi to disengage.
I've run out of ideas on how to fix my 98 S10 ZR2. When I first discovered the front axle wouldn't engage, I found broken parts in the front axle. I fixed these, then couldn't turn the front axle off, unless I disconected the vacuum line. I've changed the vacuum actuator in the transfer case, but still had constant vacuum. I tried two different junk yard modules under the kick panel, whith still no results. I finally changed the encoder, and discovered that it was always clicked to 4 wheel drive. when I put the new one on, I had to manually turn the shaft to two wheel high in order to bolt on the decoder. The decoder doesn't seem to be getting any signal. Then I went and changed the switch on the dash, with still no results. If I pull the plug off the decoder, then the switch lights don't work. All that's left is the transfer case switch on the front axle, which I am getting today. If this doesn't fix it. nothings left.
