Rearview mirror ripped chunk out of windshield - how do I fix without replacing windshield

Last week while adjusting my rearview mirror it fell off the windshield with a chunk of the windshield attached. I am dumbfounded. I did not even pull that hard on it! Nonetheless, I have tried reattaching the rearview mirror plate with the chunk of glass still attached with glass glue twice, but the mirror falls off after a day or two. Looking for some cost-effective ideas. I would rather not have to replace my entire windshield.

First, check your state insurance regulations. Assuming you have comprehensive, some states require the replacement of glass with no deductible.

The factory "dot matrix" tinting and especially the blotch with the cut-out of it for the mirror placement is a problem. Usually when this would happen on a regular windshield, we can just move the mirror anchor and bond it beside the damaged section of the glass. That tinting however is like the Teflon coating on a frying pan and resists adhesives sticking to it. There aren't any good or advisable ways to try to remove some of that tinting to make a place to remount the mirror. Your best approach unfortunately this time is to replace the windshield.
