Just bought a gold limited HL in Houston. The price was around $1700 above the manufacture
invoice (or $1000 above "dealer" invoice; fyi TDA $250 is part of the dealer invoice). Of course, I had to buy some other options installedby either GST or dealer; e.g. running board, upgrade mirror, etching&decoration, ...It does not have VSC or BE. At the end, I had to pay some $395 for PDM? that I was not aware of and $50 Doc fee. The only plus I got was that they gave me $1000 more for my trade-in compared with another dealer's final offer (same price for HL but $1000 less on trade-in). I was tired and wary at the end of the day after spending 4 hours at the dealer so I think I just got a reasonable deal... not the best one if I am willing to wait for awhile....p.s. McCall is where I bought it from. Try to contact the Internet sales Dept.

Thank you for your comments on the PIO gray leather. They were very helpful.

gwkiser: Let me know when your beautiful Bluestone Ltd. arrives and how you like the leather. I've decided to go for the gray but will probably be waiting at least 4 more weeks for my silver HL. At least I hope it's only 4!

jdlaw2: How much extra were they going to charge? I was quoted the invoice price of $812 for PIO gray leather which I think is reasonable. Also, I've never seen any, factory or otherwise, that wasn't perforated. I must say I'm surprised at how the different regions vary their options so much. Anyhow, I think the black/ivory combination you've ordered looks terrific!

If anyone else has or has seen the gray leather, I'd appreciate all responses! Thanks

I have the gray perforated leather and think it's just fine. proof of how great is when we start getting 100 degree weather here in houston. car is white, and I think a great color combo.

Does anyone know where the prewired connector is for towing a trailer? I read somewhere that the tow prep package (TO) includes prewiring and the owners manual says there is wiring for a trailer, but I can't see it and nobody I've talked with knows if it exists. Thanks for any info.

Check out message #1386 for the wiring location
There are hitches available from Hidden Hitch, Dalan, and DrawTite for the HL

Thanks, ellybill, for setting my mind at ease. Your HL sounds nice, and I know what you mean about those 100 degree days...not looking forward to that. I love the cold weather but have spent a good part of my life in FL, TX, and OK - go figure!

To all that responded to my first cry for help, thanks. We have decided on the Highlander, Bluestone, AWD, limited, leather, etc. Trouble is now we can not find one. One dealer tells us it will take 4 months and another will try a preference lock in their next allocation, but will not negotiate on price. So, this leaves us a little feeling like where ever we go we are getting the run around. I never knew it could be so hard to get someone to take my $30K+. I know the color is part of problem, but its the strong preference of my wife, for whom the car is being purchased. So, I guess I just needed to vent and will appreciate any comments about our situation.

I did not find anything other than the light wiring in the light compartment on mine. I did, however, find what looks like an available connector under a black cover below the vehicle. The cover is held on by a couple of nuts on some screwposts.

Like my 1st tankfull, the 2nd also gave me around 20mpg on a combined city/hiway driving. My V6 camry is giving me better mileage at 23mpg. I'm also hearing some lapping(or clapping) noise underneath everytime I start and move my HL into motion. The dealer srvc tech says it's the ABS activating and is normal. Anybody out there experiencing the same thing with their 4 cyl?
  • htedj0htedj0 Member Posts: 2
Message #1454 of 1509 Got a Silver HL & Love it! by forfeiteleven said "..needless to say I settled for the basic V6"

I assume without any options. Does anybody know whether basic v6 HL is available in the US dealer, especially midwest area ?
I checked few dealer an they only told me to order it. I am not so sure my old car will compromise to wait for that long - by the way I live in Michigan.
Maybe dianne4toyota knows about it ?

I really liked HL but for the price + options that I have to pay I may switch to 4runner for lower price and last longer reputation also included traction control (equal to vsc in HL ??)

So if I can cut down the options, it will closer to my budget.

    Any suggestion ??

To Rutger56 : The key selling point of the HL is the Hl is the lower version of the Rx300. The price Toyota is asking is pretty hefty for the HL.The RX300 comes only in 6 Cyl so if you get the 4 cyl you are really not getting the cheaper version of the RX300. There is an interesting review of the HL on Carpoint.msn.com By Ann JOb. She said she noticed that the 4 cylinder was noiser than the 6 cyl ans she recommended the 6 cyl because it's the same great engine Lexus uses in the Rx300.
  • rutger56rutger56 Member Posts: 12
I read Ann Jobs review. However, the 4 cyl engine was designed by toyota exlcusively for the HL.I test drove the 4cyl and it seemed fine, plus I do like the mileage since I will put on alot of miles. The 6 is stronger of course, but it cost $1500 more. The question is will I get $1500 more when i trade it in in 4-5 years? As far as comparing it to the lexus, it cost 10k more; it is more than just the engine. I like the 6 cyl too,but why not use it as the base engine then.

I, too, am having a heck of a time getting one, but I did already get a price quote of around $1700 over invoice--so I'm pleased with the deal and will wait. My dealer even went as far as telling me they had stopped production of the Bluestone maybe because of quality and would I want a different one that they had on the lot! After doing some checking, found out that Bluestone is just a popular color and is hard to find -- no quality question. Dealer Dianne that responds on this site has been VERY helpful... she is out of Carson, CA... don't know how far that is from San Diego but she has answered mine and others questions about the Bluestone color (check out messages #1236, #1282, #1328). My dealer now tells me that he has located one and is working on a trade with that dealer, so we should know tomorrow morning... sure hope this one pans out, been waiting over a month and my husband is getting tired of me driving his sebring! Good luck!
  • kooikerkooiker Member Posts: 11
Good luck on getting a Bluestone. We waited for weeks with the dealer calling every other day to tell us he was unable to secure one. We wanted a limited with leather and pretty much all options and agreed on a price only to wait. We finally broke down and told him that we would also accept white or silver (The HL comes in too may dark colors which are hard to keep looking clean) Anyway, we waited a long time and no Bluestone. Not sure how they are distributed but there were none within 500 miles of us for 6 weeks. Lots of gold up here in the NW, but I think that is the worst color available.

I have tried to access the Yahoo web site to see color samples of Bluestone, however I cannot gain access to the photo section. I registered and logged in as a new member but to no avail. Any ideas where I could see this color?
  • robr2robr2 Member Posts: 8,805
I went to build an HL using my Boston area zip code. The site doesn't even offer Bluestone.

Even more interesting is that 4x4 in both 4 and 6 cylinders are listed as Limiteds although you still need to order the limited package.
  • watchmansusawatchmansusa Member Posts: 10
I just tried to access the photo section on the Yahoo Highlander Club and it worked fine. I would suggest that you make sure the link you used was correct (see link below) and try it again. I have experienced some problems this week on Yahoo at this and other sites. The Club is still there so keep trying.

I have been trying to find out info on the factory installed hitch, and can provide this info and opinion, and hope to have someone with hands-on experience advise. Here in Madison, WI hard to get one with hitch, although no problem with tow prep package (TO). Dealer parts dept says Toyota having problems with converter, which is part of hitch package, so they can't get hitches for some months. In looking over brochure, and noting Highlander owners' comments on this web site, it appears the towing prep (TO) does include trailer wiring back to under rear bumper, but at that point a converter has to be connected, and that's where their problem is. If that is the case, one should be able to use an after market converter, cutting their wires at the Toyota plug (probably female), and connecting them to new unit's plug, etc. The after market hitch itself, such as "Hidden Hitch" # 70777 should be no problem what-so-ever. Call to Toyota "Customer Service" was worthless. Any comments would be appreciated. dean2sm1

I had a customer wanting a Bluestone about 1 month ago and I was able to get it w/ no problem . I am not sure what the case is now . I will say I have seen every color and the bluestone was the sharpest I have seen . Has anyone really compared the RX300 and the HL ? The very customer who got the bluestone also has a RX300 . His comments were that the HL was smoother and larger , however he felt that the RX300 was a little quieter . Curious if anyone else has compared the two .

Sorry to have been so scarce for you guys and gals -- been utterly swamped. And, here til 9-10-11 pm delivering cars and trying to keep the website inventory current. Staring down the barrel of selling 80 cars this month myself, and while I prioritize, strangely quiet, I surface eventually!

Highlander tool kit = misprint. It happens.
I can't comment on "PORT installed leather" because we don't do that here in SoCal. I read somewhere that Toyota guard and other things were discussed, and thankfully, it's not in Socal either. We get our cars pure here, free from the "snake oil" products that are deemed unneccesary!

Bluestone... what can I say. It's pretty, it's unusual, and scarce. Perhaps they will dial UP the production of that color. Til then, the request for bluestone's far beyond their production. Annekup here told me a few weeks back that she really wanted a bluestone, and I was able to obtain one for her, as well as another Edmunds buyer who wanted a non-Limited. Patience may be the key to that color. And, don't be surprised if dealers want more $ for them, or even if they agree to what appears to be typical deals, take deposits to "find" one or locate one. That's how a lot of stores operate. I dunno, and it's probably personal preference, but I won't take anyone's money til I have a car for them myself... coming to us, that isn't a pie in the sky. Before leaving a dealership a check, leave it on a car that exists for them, not a promise of a car. I say this kindly, and not in a scolding manner. I have a hard time taking anyone's check for a "possible" car. Makes no sense to me. I just don't do it. I believe that dealers do that to feel as if you are thus "off the market" after writing that check, because you are waiting for them to call you and tell you they have it (eventually) and why is a check needed for that? Shouldn't they get it anyway, because you want it?

    Just food for thought.

Here in the MidWest there seem to be Bluestones available.

We decided to go with the Indigo Blue instead

Kings Toyota currently lists 4 out of 25 :

Unlike your dealership that sales a tremendous amount of cars . If we spend a long time getting a car for someone that is an ugly duckling (THE CAR THAT IS ) If the consumer says well we don't want it anymore then we are stuck w/ a car we gave up good merchandise for , granted it doesnt happen a lot ... We are a medium size dealership and we are lucky to get Highlanders and Sequoia's to meet our demand .... Just food for thought ... =) (per dianne) my new friend .

    Dear prolific Catfish!
I have to clarify things: the good stuff, like the bluestones or the and Spyders... what's to fear about a sale cancelling? Means it's available to someone else now. Now, order-built trucks, ie. unusual built-to-spec units for folks, yes, I take deposits. But, in this state, I can't keep a deposit when someone cancels so it's sorta silly to insist on a check. I think it's a personal thing to go with one's gut. I am always rappin' with folks in email and a big red flag for me in conversation is how many times they request to know about how refundable the deposit it... I'd rather not take any car off the market for a "maybe" because I quote cars to many folks. I mark a car sold, and folks are disappointed, perhaps talked into different cars at higher prices by spouses or other dealers, and then their first choice original car breaks free because my "sold" was a "sorta sold" only I didn't know that... and then it makes folks mad at me because they assume I was trying to get out of selling the car so cheaply before it hit ground. Capische? In small stores, the mentality is still "old school" with managers saying: "where's the deposit... can't get a car without the deposit." Like I said, it's food for thought. The car world according to Dianne at my store with my inventory, I guess. I just believe my people when they say they want a car. And, true to my experiences, when deposits don't come as agreed upon, the buyers often weren't set on cars. The faster a deposit arrives, the more serious I know my buyer is when I feel the need to request one. I am certain there are enough of my clients reading the boards to know that I have even, when a car was close to arrival and they are far away, insisted they NOT send a deposit. A check in the mail doesn't mean you have a vehicle sold for sure for sure for sure. It means you have a check mailed, and now you're holding it til the car lands properly and as agreed. Lots of sentences to just say that I take my people's word for it that they want the car/truck/whatever unless, as I said, conversation rolls heavily to the "what if I cancel" issue.

but she had the Silver coming in with a console and other options I wanted....she held it for me
and I am happy that I did not wait for the Bluestone......also...the resale value on silver may be higher than Bluestone.....I sold my 96 silver 4runner to a private party and got low blue book.....

To little_pogi: My 6 Cylinder makes the same "clapping" noise underneath the car. It makes the noise once or twice when I back up and then, makes it again for one or two wheel revolutions when I first go forward. Several of the people on Camryman.org who own Solara's have the same noise. I belive one person said it was caused by the "floating caliper" design. In any event, I think its normal break noise, although not all of the cars do it. My 98 xle V6 Camry did not make the noise(traded on the HL).

Stereo Quailty: I have the JBL 6 disc and I think the sound is good, but not great. The stock system in my Camry was great. I plan on upgrading with a 5 channel amp and a pair of subs in the back.

I LOVE MY HL!!!!!!!!!! (sorry for shouting)

I was looking for a gold HL, and today I finally saw one but it appearees to have a "greenish" cast to it. Was it the light? Anyone with a gold have comments? Also, are certain colors higher for resale? I also contemplated getting a black one (so beautiful!). I currently have a black car and it's a pain to maintain but it still looks good after three years.

To rfhou: congrats on the HL! Amp & subs are on my list too!

No green in that gold! It may have been overcast? Or, reflective of another car perhaps.
  • jackflackjackflack Member Posts: 4
Following up on a couple of the posts here, I too hear that sound on first acceleration. At first I thought I had a branch or something stuck underneath. If it is normal then I feel better. Anyway I'm taking it in Monday to have them look at it and take care of a recall item, which I'm surprised to not see any mention of here. Not a big item -- supposedly sub-zero temps are causing an engine light to erroneously come on?

As for the mileage, I too got exactly 20mpg on my first measured tankful (4 cyl.), with good mix of city/hwy driving. If that doesn't dramatically improve as the engine breaks in, I will be one very unhappy camper.

    V6 AWD.
Did my first oil change on my new HL today at 530 miles. Since no manufacturers (that I know of) use break-in oil these days, I'm a firm believer of early first oil changes to get any manufacturing chemicals and/or crud out of the engine.
I was able to slide under the vehicle with no problem, and some of my shirts are 3X, so less "powerful" (read: normal size) people should have lots of room! The oil pan takes a 14mm wrench, and is a snap to get to. The oil filter is a little tougher. If you use a cup type wrench (small size), with a 3" extension, you should be able to get at it from the top. Unfortunately, once it's loose, there is not enough room between the engine and fan housing to bring it up and outta' there. I only had a strap type small filter wrench, so it made things a little more difficult. I was, however, able to do it all from underneath without making too much of a mess. There is a plastic shield that runs sideways under the radiator. Just to scope it out after the job was done, I removed its 2 push type fasteners & ~8 bolts using a 10mm (I think) socket, and it came right down. This opened everything up. A little bit of a pain, but less stretching required, and easier to keep thing clean. An option , if you wanna take it. The engine has a drip piece under the filter, but it could be a little longer to avoid a mess.
I've been changing oil on cars for over 30 years. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the hardest/messiest, I rate this one a 5, only because the oil gets on other things besides the drain pan.

    Dianne,

We are picking up our HL tomorrow and have every option except for the center console. The sales manager told me that the console is on "hold" and should be available in the near future. I called the Toyota assisantance center and they told me the console will not be available until the next model year(due to emissions issues---yeah right). Could you check to see if the is orderable or not. We really need the Ck.

    Thanks, Andre

Went to a local dealer in Mass. 3 weeks ago and asked about a Bluestone 6 cyl. AWD non-limited w/sunroof. Managed to get the last one that they had for the allocation that month. Also caught it in time to get the console and security system installed at the port.

Just picked up the vehicle last Friday. Really glad that we were able to get the Bluestone - it's a very nice color.
  • sotagearsotagear Member Posts: 17
Yes, there is a light greenish cast to the gold HL (& the new gold Rav4). I know this only too well, because I've been extremely anal about picking a color with the HL. My wife & I have been out every weekend for the last month trying to see every color of HL & checking them at different times of the day. My wife wanted the gold & I said I didn't want it because the greenish cast turned me off. It didn't bother her & it doesn't show up as much in the shade. We finally brought our choice down to silver or red. We chose red to be different & I saw it numerous times & it grew on me. It also has a slightly orange cast to it, but I didn't mind it too much.
No matter what color you go with, you'll probably end up liking it once it's yours.
I do wish that Toyota would have been a bit more creative with the colors though. They're all a bit boring to me, especially considering that there is nothing else on the body for a contrast - just one big color. At least the Rav & 4runner have bumpers, wheel wells, etc that have some contrasting color. Maybe there will be after market flared wheel wells, or something. Then again it might look dumb on this body style.
OK - regardless of all my nitpicking on colors, it didn't stop me from buying it. IMHO, it's the best suv out there for my needs & wants. Just impatiently waiting for mine to be delivered.

I always research to upgrade the OEM tires on my new vehicles. This provides me with a better mileage warranty, premium handling, traction, and a quieter ride. However, I've run into a problem with the standard Highlander tires in size 225/70R16.

My research led me to seek Michelin SUV Cross Terrain tires. They list for $139. I've also traded in the OEM tires and normally pay $25-35 per tire in difference (which includes mount/balance/road hazard). I haven't located a Michelin tire dealer that will accept this tire size in trade.

The reason appears to be that this is a new tire size so their demand is nonexistent for the next few years. One dealer is contacting other dealers and will offer me a trade if he can pre-sell my tires.

Why do I want the Michelin tire? Research on-line tire sales and the Michelin site. Consumer surveys rate our Dueler H/T tires as average. The consumer surveys rate the Bridgestone H/L much higher in all aspects and Michelin ALWAYS receives high ratings.

Our 2WD Highlander came with Goodyear Tires, They have a very street oriented thread on it, almost like a sedan tire, I've seen people that got Michelins and some Bridgstones, Are they any better than the ones we got?

Here in SoCal, HL's have Goodyear Integrity tires like the ones you describe. They are quiet and smooth in a straight line, but feel like they roll under quite a bit when cornering and make a scrubbing noise. It's not a squealing noise, but it sounds like the tires are rubbing against a curb. The tires have 35 psi, so they are not underinflated. These tires were probably chosen mainly on cost and smoothness. It would be nice to drive an HL with a set of more performance-oriented tires.

I just drove home in my Limited Bluestone Highlander. After haggling with the dealer for almost a week, we finally got to a price I could live with. It handles great! This is my first Toyota and had considered a used RX300 but when I found out that the Highlander was going to be available . . . I couldn't wait. I have been driving my husband crazy with constant talk about the Highlander board at Edmunds. After reading how hard the Bluestone color was becoming I decided to give a little on the price to the dealer. Think I came away with a good deal MSRP $33,221 drove it away $32,800 (includes dealer fees, tax, title, tag).
  • gasman1gasman1 Member Posts: 321
My Michelin dealer found another dealership to take my Bridgestone tires. I'm in Keokuk, IA (SE tip of IA) and they're going to Lincoln, NE. My price on the Michelin SUV Cross Terrain tires is $85 each (a lot more than I normally pay) but should be worth it.

I'll have them installed next Friday due to my out of town business requirements. I'll evaluate and post what I find, but The Tire rack is a great site for consumer feedback.

The door sticker recommends 30psi which I believe is under inflation and concerned me for two reasons. First, I just traded an Explorer which was suppose to have 26psi (although I kept them at 29psi). Second, Bridgestone owns/manages Firestone. I won't tempt fate, twice.

    Happy motoring!

Has anyone out there been able to get a Dash-Mat for the Highlander. I've called a couple places and neither of them have the pattern to make them, Please advise....

I'm probably one of the younger new Highlander owners out there. I've had my V6 a couple of weeks and got 17mpg on the first full tank. I guess the accelerator and I shouldn't be so friendly.
For those of you looking to add accessories to your HL, Gulf States Toyota is putting running bars on some of the HL's as a port installed option. They look pretty good, although I didn't get mine with them... will probably add later. Just wanted to let everyone know they're out there.
I also have the perforated gray leather which I like. It tends to not be as hot in the summer for those of us who live on the gulf coast.
  • seemomgoseemomgo Member Posts: 27
Congrats on your purchase. I am in the Gulf States area also but haven't received my silver HL yet. What color is yours? I've ordered the gray leather although I haven't actually seen it on any car yet. Could you please tell me how well you think it matches the charcoal interior and how dark or light it is? Thank you :-)
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Your concern about under inflation is understandable but unfounded. Ford made the decision to reduce the pressure to create a better ride. That was Ford's fault. It does not mean that other vehicles would behave the same way.

All manufacturers look at a number is issues when putting a tire pressure suggestion on the door and in the manual. They look at the overall engineering of the vehicle and the characteristics of the tires. Safety, comfort, economy, alignment, tire wear are all taken into account. By putting more air than the manufacturer reccomends, you alter that balance and there may be no reason for it.
  • hialeahmariahialeahmaria Member Posts: 45
The tires I've seen here in Miami have been Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin (upgrade). Are the Michelins a good choice? I've always had Michelins on my cars. Goodyear: used to work for them, but didn't care for the tires. Bridgestone (dba Firestone?), my son had them on his car, had all replaced within a year.

Someone posted that they "exchanged" the stock tires for Michelins at a tire dealer and paid a difference. Is this common?

    Thanks for the help, all.

My wife and I are really looking hard the HL 2wd V6 Limited with sunroof. Getting a pretty good deal at Tuscaloosa Toyota . . . . at least according to the numbers in Kelley, Consumer Reports, Edmunds. Listed $32,700 and getting for $28,700. All we need to do now is decide on the color. We have seen the red, white, green, gold . . . looking for pictures of the Bluestone (my first choice). I think it is close to the silver blue they use on the Avalon. Any pictures or links out there? e-mail me @ jhambham@aol.com

I have the Black HL. The gray leather is a light gray, and probably lighter than the factory leather. The leather trim on the doors is the same color as the seats... and the dark gray dash area (which replaces the wood trim of the limited) is different enough that it gives a nice two-tone effect. The carpet and floor mats are a different color, I guess it's charcoal...but it's close enough to the leather not to bother me.
From my understanding, you should have the exact interior on your silver one as I have on my black one. Congrats on your purchase, I'd be happy to answer any more questions since I know GST does things a little differently, including the option packages they offer.

Quick question about the HL with fog lights. Will they come on with the parking lights or must the low beams be on for them to illuminate?

Just curious. I am planning to purchase a HL limited in the future and was just curious how Toyota had set this up.
