Are you sure the grey boards come standard? I don't see them listed anywhere as standard equipment--not even in the brochure.

Originally ordered an SLT, but after searching beyond my local dealerships, I ended up with a Patriot Blue Limited(with a Hemi of course). The dealership was like 30-miles from my house, not ridiculously far. For a mere $488 dollar difference, I got a Limited with everything that I had wanted on the SLT and more!!! It's even the color I ordered. Go figure, I got way more car for just $488 more. I guess it just shows how much the other dealership was trying to screw me. Really glad I got one. I've done lots of research on the new Durango and I hope it doesn't disappoint. I also looked at Expeditions & Sequoias, but the Durango to me, was the best. It's as quiet as the Sequoia, had the best ride, and the best go for the dollar. Although it isn't as cool or fun as the low-13 second Mustang I had to trade in, it will be alot more fun on long road trips with the family. The expansion of our family from 4 to 5 made a larger car a necessity. Loving it so far, will try to update in a couple of months. If you're in the market for an SUV, I would definitely at least test drive one of these and really check them out.

I'm considering a Durango to replace our aging Mountaineer. After a couple of test drives with putting the kids in the 3rd row, both of them have had unpleasant encounters with the metal claw that protrubes out after flipping the 2nd row seat forward. Has anyone else run into this? I don't want a long-term safety nuisance everytime we go back there. Why couldn't Dodge put some protective/retractable rubber around it? When I first saw it, I thought some parts were missing.

    Thoughts anyone?

glad to see you bought one with the hemi, yeah keep us posted if you have any problems, so far i have 700 miles on my hemi and no problems whatsoever:)
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
I am sorry, I was mistaken. Listened to the salesman on that one. Gray boards are not standard and are not even available on the Limited. You do have to get the body-color ones or after market like you are getting. Thanks for the info. I would have been peeved when it showed without them. Well, that's another $445 I have to spend!! Well, let me know if they are there when you get it. Catch ya' later.

took the durango down my dads today, its a 3 hour drive one way, i must say no problems, nice ride all the way down there, so happy i got rid of the armada, so many problems people are posting on the other site i feel for them because i was there, ill keep the post coming if i run into any problems with the dodge
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
Glad to hear it. Can't wait to get mine!
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
I finally get to order mine. Kia is buying back my van. Wish me luck. I am assuming you are still happy as you haven't put any posts on here stating otherwise!
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
yes very happy no problems whatsoever, for me not posting is a good thing lol, but very happy so far with the durango, i get alot of looks from people when driving this suv looks sharp if you ask me, cant wait until i break in the engine so i can see what this hemi has, i bought mud guards, vent visors, sunroof deflector, and hood deflector too looks nice, i even bought a chrome fuel door thats looks bling bling :)
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
I like this side of you (the happy side that is). Didn't get a lot of that on the other board!! Glad to see you are hooking your baby up! I am ordering mine sometime between tonight and this weekend! New incentives are supposed to hit on April 1, but know if the Durango will be included. Can't wait. It will take 3 weeks for me to get the money and turn in the van, and 6 to order the Dodge (HOPEFULLY FASTER!!). It is going to suck having to wait that long, but I custom ordered it to ensure that 1) I get EXACTLY what I want, and 2) I get a a second production run, just to be safe!
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
yeah its great to have a problem free suv so far, and yes im happy for sure, when i bought my durango it just came off the truck, made in early march so i have the newest production too, ill keep you guys posted for sure as i put more miles on her, funny thing about my whole ordeal is i was going to look at the new durango too but when i saw the armada i let me heart get in the way of my judgment and it bit me in the [non-permissible content removed], but lesson learned for sure

I got to test drive a new Durango this morning - a colleague brought his buy on the way to work from the dealership. 20 miles on it.

It's still smaller than what I need, though bigger than last years, probably even a tad smaller than the Sequoia, but close to it, so it's a 7/8ths sized full size SUV I guess.

Positives for me included the style, inside & out. Very attractive. No squeaks or rattles, was solid. Negatives: Pushrod Hemi engine was a disappointment, it wasn't that fast for the displacement of 5.7L. Second row seats quite small, and no legroom at all if front seats are back. Third row, for kids only. Seats fold flat, but not that flat, and on a severe incline.
Car felt tinny. Rode like a Buick Park Avenue - not altogether a good thing for an SUV. Kinda twitchy. YMMV.

I've haven't had a chance to post--but, nothing really to post yet--I haven't taken delivery yet. My dealer tells me that it's scheduled to ship from the factory next Tuesday. With any luck I could have it next Friday--but that's probably pushing it.

Great news as far as the new rebate that's available--Dodge replaced the $1,500 trade-in assistance with straight cash--which save me the hassle of finding and buying a $100 POS that I was going to dump on them.

When all is said and done, I'll wind up with almost a fully loaded Hemi for at least $5K less than the Armanda I was considering. Even assuming Nissan gets all the kinks worked out (which I'm fairly certain they eventually will), dollar-for-dollar, I haven't seen anything out there that gives you nearly as much for your money as the Durango (just my opinion--please, I don't want to start another discussion about resale value).
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
I would never do that. Resale value can be mitigated many ways, like keeping the car longer, or factoring in the discounts up front. My question is, how do you get over the running board???? It's totally in the way for me. I would either need to be a foot taller to get over it, or a foot shorter to use it. Opinions?
  • flailflail Member Posts: 3
I just bought a 04' Durango. I considered the Toyota Soquia, since Toyotas have a better resale value. All in all i went with the Durango because I negotiated a great deal and got a $1500 cash back incentive and I plan on keeping this great suv for a long time. It works for me.
  • flailflail Member Posts: 3
By the way, my Wife insisted on the running boards for kids to get in and out of this beast. If I was "kidless" I would not recommend the running boards because they do get in the way of exiting the vehicle.
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
I am ordering mine tomorrow. EXTREMELY EXCITED. Have to decide between factory or aftermarket DVD. They don't make the headrest ones for the Durango yet according to Best Buy and Circuit City. Anyone know of a company that makes them yet? HELP?!?!
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
the factory dvd system is very nice i like mine, dont know of any aftermarket one however im sure you could find a place that installs them if you want to go that route
  • lucajalucaja Member Posts: 21
    Cwoferg . . .

You can definitely get more for your money going with an aftermarket system (bigger, brighter, better screen). I looked into it, but in the end, I went with the factory sytem--mostly because I didn't have the time to find out where/how an aftermarket one would get power or run the cables (i.e., does the headliner need to be removed etc.). If I could have waited to order, I would have visited a high-end auto audio/video, or maybe even Circuit City to ask some questions. There is also a couple of car audio/video installer message boards that may be of some help to you. One that I found was "caraudioforum.com"-but there are several out there--I just don't remember the names.

There may be some info over in DVD/Entertainment Systems too.

I ORDERED IT!! I decided on the factory DVD as Best Buy and Circuit City do not yet make the headrest screens for the 04 Durango (or for the 03 and earlier for that matter). Just the Quad Cab and the Caravan. Didn't want to waste time trying to figure out which ones fit where, etc. We like the factory one and Chas hasn't led me wrong yet. He steered me away from the Armada and teetered me over the edge to the Durango. I custom ordered it because every single Limited Hemi in Southern Cali has a darn moonroof!! Have them now in both of my cars, don't use them, could use the $800 for something else (body color running boards and supplemental side-curtain air bags). I negotiated a fleet deal and saved a butt-load. Window sticker would be 41,000 and some change, getting it for 37,200. Couldn't be happier and can't wait! If anyone is teetering on the edge as to whether or not to buy one, DO IT! Feature for feature, it is awesome! The only one even in the ball park is the Sequoia (great vehicle in its own right), but it is not strong enough (6200 lbs towing) and costs more, 4-7k more.
  • lucajalucaja Member Posts: 21
Glad to here it Cwoferg. Can't wait to get mine--hopefully it ships tomorrow. As for price--your $37,200 is before the $1500 rebate??
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
thats a great deal on a fully loaded hemi sweet:), and as for the sunroof im like you even though i hardly use the sunroof it does add value on the resale if you ever decided to trade it in which i doubt either of us will any time soon, good luck with your new ride and have fun like im doing, so far not 1 problem yet ill keep the post coming for sure, im like baffled sometimes going in my hemi and not having a problem, im not use to that but its nice not having to worry about whats going to break next
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
Lucaja, here's to hoping yours comes in today! And that price is BEFORE the rebate. I think I did pretty good. As for the running boards, Mopar has some pretty nice chrome tube steps, don't know the price, but they look good. My wife and I like the body-color ones though.

Chas, I understand on the moonroof. I like it, but every time I open them it bothers my wife, so it just stays closed. And I don't plan on getting rid of it either!

    Hey guys,
What kind of deals did you get on the extended warranty? Or did you even get one? I am definitely getting Gap insurance, but contemplating the extended warranty.
  • lucajalucaja Member Posts: 21
Cwoferg - haven't looked into any extended warranty for the Durango (but they sure do make any later resale much easier. In my past experience (at least with other manufacturers)--the dealer usually marks it up 100%. They are definitely very negotiable and you usually don't have to buy it immediately. Depending upon the manufacturer--you sometimes have 1 or 2 years or 12/24K miles to buy one. The "problem" with buying one later is that you have more leverage when you are negotiating the purchase of the car--because you can always walk away from the whole deal--and a dealer isn't likely to let that happen. It never ceases to amaze me how much a dealer will deal if you actually get up and walk out (especially if you have a competitor's brochure in your hand and the competitors dealer is near by). That's what I did this time (and it wasn't BS on my part, because I really was considering the Armada)--but I wound up getting mine for a few hundred under invoice--before the rebate.

To be honest--I screwed up getting the warranty though--because I was so focused on getting the deal I wanted that it totally slipped my mind.

Either way, I'll give the dealer a shot later on or simply buy the warranty from another dealer. As a general rule, I would not pay more than $200 over dealer cost for a warranty----since it's only paperwork on their end.

As for insurance, Don't really know too much about GAP--I thought that was mostly for leased vehicles.

I've always insured my cars with Chubb for replacement value. It's "replacement value" for the first year and then "stated value" (a number I choose up to the current year's MSRP) for the following years. Maybe it's something your insurance company offers.

Thanks for the info. I knew there was a considerable markup in it, but I didn't know it was THAT much! I appreciate your time.
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
I have only four weeks left until I get my new baby!! They said it could be sooner, but we will see. Any problems yet, Chas? Get yours yet lucaja?
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
no and im happy, almost have 2500 miles on her, the hardest thing is keeping the truck looking clean because its black in color, only thing i had to get replaced was the driver side door seal, on the upper top corner it wasnt flush to the door, but its all fixed and thats very minor if you ask me from what im used to have going wrong

I got to test drive a Limited w/Hemi yesterday at my local dealer. It was black w/every available option. I was VERY impressed with the ride & handling, though disappointed at the lack of an available NAV system. I got quoted a little over $35K by thedealer, which is not a bad deal from the research that I've done.
Anybody know when a NAV system might be available for the D?

You supposedly can get a navigation system for the Durango. It is a replacement radio unit that combines radio/CD with a Navigation screen. Most dealers are probably clueless about it's availability, but if you look in the 2004 Dodge Accessories brochure for the Durango, the "REC" unit is the one that you want.

What I do not know, is if it is truely available. The catalog says available 1st quarter, 2004.
  • lucajalucaja Member Posts: 21
I finally got mine last week. It actually arrived at the dealer the week before, but because they drilled four holes in the front bumper for a license plate bracket (which my state doesn't require and which I specifically had them agree not to do in my purchase contract), I refused delivery until they ordered me another truck or replaced the bumper (they took the obvious choice and fixed the bumper).

Ironically, during the time it took them to straighten this out, Dodge increased the standard rebate. So, including the $500 loyalty rebate, I wound up with a Hemi Limited 4x4 with sunroof, DVD, supplemental airbags, 3:92 gearing, 2-speed transfer case, traction control, heated seats, split third row, tow package for 33K even (plus tax & title).

Just a friendly reminder, make sure you get credited with the rebate available at time of delivery, NOT just what was available when you placed your order--and don't let them tell you otherwise. If you have any questions, simply call Dodge's Rebate and Incentive department to confirm what's available and how it should be credited to you. I don't have the number with me today, but can post it tomorrow if you or anyone else needs it--though it's not too hard to find.

My dealer had first told me I couldn't get the loyalty rebate because it only applied to a new leased vehicle and not a purchase. When I gave him a name and number for Dodge's regional business center and the number for the Rebate and Incentive office, he left to look into it--came back literally three seconds later and told me he stood corrected (must have had speed dial or telepathy).

Also, I don't know about any other states, but in mine, sales tax is owed on the full purchase price notwithstanding any available rebates--so I paid tax on 36K. You should check that with your state's motor vehicle department before you pick up your vehicle.

Also, I was told (by the dealer) that you have until the end of the basic warranty period (3 year/36,000 miles) to buy the extended warranty--but I'm going to call Dodge to confirm that option.

Now, as for the vehicle itself, I picked it up with 4 miles on it and it now has 5--won't be using it until this weekend--but I'm certainly looking forward to it.

All that's left for me to do is find some black tube steps for it, put a light tint on the front windows to match the factory tint (I think it looks better and I feel a little better knowing it's not as easy to see who's driving the vehicle when it's just my wife and son), and to decide on an aluminum grill insert--oh yea, and to drive the damn thing!

Went to the dealer on a whim yesterday. here's the deal I was given: 2004 SLT with Leather power pedals, 6 disc changer/MP3, MSRP of 35K.
I am leasing for 39 months with 1500 out of pocket with a monthly note of 380.(including NJ state taxes)
Seemed like a good deal to me.
Does anyone know if the CD player plays CD-RW discs with MP3's on them?

    Thanks.
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
yes the cd player plays cd-rw, 3000 miles and no problems :)
  • sawyerjonsawyerjon Member Posts: 15
    Thanks for the info.
  • sawyerjonsawyerjon Member Posts: 15
I picken up my SLT Friday, noticed 2 issues. First the remote doestn't open the passengers side door, unless I open the drives door, lock the car again, then I can unlock the the other doors. The other thing is that the headlights don't go off when I switch them off, I have to turn them off, turn them on, then turn them off again, and they finally go out.
Has anyone had these problems? I'm bringing it in for service when the plates come in.
  • lucajalucaja Member Posts: 21
I thinking you haven't read the manual yet ('cause you've been anxious to drive your new ride).

Press the remote unlock button twice--the first time opens the driver's door, the second unlocks the rest.

The lights are on a timer, they stay lit for about a minute (maybe 30 seconds, I forgot what I read in the manual). It's designed to illuminate wherever it is your going (front door, driveway, etc.) when you arrive at night--long enough for you to find your keys and get inside.
  • svevarsvevar Member Posts: 160
The time delay feature for the headlights is very convenient, I think, but if you don't want it, just turn the lights off before you switch the ignition off, and then they won't stay on for that 30 second "courtesy" period.

Yes, sawyerjon, once you get over the excitement of your new truck, crack open that owner's manual!

     -- Mark
  • sawyerjonsawyerjon Member Posts: 15
    Thanks Mark...

The headlight issue was well beyond the courtesy period, it was close to half an hour!

The door locks for the passenger doors won't work with the remote or the inside button, unless I lock and unlock 2 - 3 times.
  • svevarsvevar Member Posts: 160
Then it sounds like you really do have a problem! Nothing the dealer shouldn't be able to fix, though. Good luck, and enjoy your new Durango.

Well, I have had my Durango since Friday, and up until this afternoon it has been fine. Just to recap we got an SLT Hemi, with leather, adjustable pedals, sunroof, 6 disc cd changer, and other stuff I can't remember right now. The car is great I like all of the features, the stereo is easy to operate, and everything seems to be of good quality. Anyway, right now(4:13pm), the temp is probably around 100 degrees, and after lunch today, I got in the car and the A/C was blowing hot air. Well it finally started to work after about an hour. I called the dealer, and they said that they could get me in Thursday... I was pissed, but I had to understand that I really have no priority over anyone else. Well I got them to get me in tomorrow morning. Another thing I noticed was the outside temp gauge reading only 79 degrees. I know for sure it is not 79 degrees right now. So anyone have any similar problems? I want to believe in this car, I really do. But I am starting to have my doubts. It is a let down that I have only had it for 4 days.
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
the air condition blowing warm air is a simple fix im sure, compared to all the problems i had with my armada thats minor believe me, im sure they will fix your problems
  • 300eguy05300eguy05 Member Posts: 39
Well, the A/C is working again, and it is acting just fine, it is nice and cold. Maybe it was just a spase or something. Anyway, I took it to the shop and I opted to not have it looked at, because I didn't feel like having to get the rental car, and then having to pick it up and have them tell me there wasn't anything wrong with it. So I hope all things go well. I love the car. The looks the feel everything is great. The ride is car-like which is a very good thing. Gas Mileage is not great, averaging around 11 right now, according to the computer. The Hemi has great power. I love the sound of it too. Chazman, I'm sorry to hear about your problems, are you considering a Durango?
  • chasmanz28chasmanz28 Member Posts: 109
i traded in my armada for the durango :)
  • chinajohnchinajohn Member Posts: 4
I have an 04 SLT and have noticed that the temp is always 65F for about 30 min before it changes. Tried hitting reset, just to see what it would do and of course, it doesn't change.
Keep a lookout for the small wheel covers with the Ram embossed on them. I lost the front two, took it to the dealer and they replaced both. The back ones were fine but for whatever reason, the front ones just popped out somewhere.
Have a whopping 960 miles on it so far and enjoy it very much except the trips to the pump, especially nowadays. Still, great truck.
  • cwofergcwoferg Member Posts: 78
I can't wait. I custom ordered a 4X4 Limited Hemi and negotiated a fleet deal. The rebate was $1500 when I ordered, now it is $2500 and the gentleman I am talking to thinks there is a $1000 incentive to use Chrysler Credit. I am going to try it and because I have an incredibly high credit score, I am sure I will get a decent finance rate. I was thinking about leasing, but decided I am just going to buy it. Chas, thanks for the solid advice and updates. Lucaja, good luck with your step rails and thanks for the updates. I will post in a couple of days to let you all know how it goes.

Hi everybody, I'm really interested in a Durango and have been since they came out. I've had three Chrysler products in the past without any major problems. A Sebring coupe and 2 Sebring convertibles. The only problem I had with any of them was my 1st convertible's keyless entry conked out and the electrical system started malfunctioning. Now I'm in the market for a new car/SUV after totaling both of the convertibles due to a combination of very severe Michigan weather and extremely spongy brakes. I want something that will hold the road and the only SUV that I find at all appealing is the DD because of the styling is far superior to any of the other competitors out there, both imports and exports alike. My only problem is that I'm freaked about buying one now. I've found a 99 black DD SLT with 50K miles on it for 12K. It's a 4x4 with the 5.2 and a towing pkg. I've been reading over all the post on the message board and it seems that almost everybody posting has had problems with their Durango, even if it was only one isolated case. Although, I know Chrysler isn't the most reliable company at times, I still have had very good luck with them considering I've owned three of their products without any major mechanical failures. All of the problems being discussed here seem to be very major and are frightening especially considering the repairs would be coming out of my pocket and I really don't have extra money around to pay for blown gaskets, blown trannies, and power window motors taking turns blowing. My question is whether owners of the previous styled DD would recommend this vehicle to somebody else. I really need to have a 4x4 and this is really the only one I'm interested in but I can't get over the fact on how many problems have been posted on this vehicle. Has anybody had good luck with these vehicles at all? I just was thinking how weird it was to have had three Chrysler products without a hitch and all over this message board nothing but problems, many times major! Could it just be the Dodge division of Chrysler? If you could please tell me about your experiences and give me advice I'd greatly appreciate because I need to buy something within the next week and I'm really starting to worry about the investment or mistake as it seems I might make...Thanks a lot. Also, I'm wondering how much more pickup the 5.9 has over the 5.2(power/0-60?) and about the "weird sound" that everybody keeps talking about that is heard when the 5.2 is high revving or idling. Lastly, does anybody know if a 99 with 50K for $12K sounds like a decent deal esp. considering the car market in the state it is in, the rising gas prices, and the DD's lousy gas mileage. Wondering if I could talk the seller down...

Picked our's up on Tuesday and love it!

Long story short..er, took our 99 Durango in to a Dodge dealer about 3 weeks ago to have the A/C looked at. They found the intake manifold gasket was leaking and replaced it (extended warrenty covered right b4 running out). Got it back and the next day oil pressure was low @ idle!!! Took it back, cause it looked like they could have contaminated the engine!!! The found oil pump cracked, and replaced, took em 3 days!!! Got it back drove it home, but problem was still there!!! Took it back again! Now crankshaft scored and at least 2 bad bearings!!! They fix the entire thing for the cost of the parts. This is where the story gets good.

Dealer tried to get me to trade vehicle in for 04 instead of paying for repair. They wouldn't give me BB for my trade, no where near it! Had them fix it for $436 took it to another dealer same day. Within hrs of getting it back was driving 04 Limited HEMI with everything but the sunroof and skid plates, and only paid $25,517 (tax and tag included)!!! Added extended BtoB warranty and MOPAR alarm and financed $27,717. We love this thing!!! Even better than the 99 we had.

We negotiated on the price of the warranty, trick is to shop late, 1-2 hrs b4 they close. By the time you see the finance person they are ready to go home. So when they pitch the "extras" and show you the price increase and payment increase you can complain about it, but appear to be interested. The finance guy droped the price considerably. We paid a little more for the alarm than what an after market one would cost, but not enough to have to shop around for one.

It's human nature to come to Town Hall and complain when there's a problem, and people are less likely to pop in and report that there's nothing to report.

Maybe a few owners of older Durangos without problems can pipe up?
