Calling it ghastly is good iluv,

We're just getting raked back and forth and the reasons behind it are just getting more and more ridiculous. The bad part about it is I think we're going to see that type of article (booger causes refinery explosion) soon or one about a refinery worker, can of baked beans or burrito for lunch... ;)

There needs to be an effort by all consumers to come up with something to reverse this situation. We can't depend on elected officials, automakers, someone else to help us out, we must do it ourselves.

Short of conserving, there's really not much we can do. But most people don't want to give up what they've got (driving alone, etc.). Getting a more fuel efficient car often doesn't make financial sense if your current vehicle is in good shape but has depreciated significantly. (And what vehicle doesn't depreciate significantly, even if it's less than a year old?)

BTW, Sheetz went up another 4 cents overnight, to $2.89 for 87 (central VA). Here we go again with $3 gas in these parts.

Agree Delray. I actually started when our fuel shot to $2 a few years ago and have cut back more and more. What helped me is that I graduated last year so my commuting is down to basically going to work and back home. Trips are combined into my routes: example if I have to go grocery shopping I do it on my way home from work. If I end my work day around rush hour I just stay at work to avoid the traffic to burn less fuel (I start my work day early in the morning to avoid the morning rush but I'm a workaholic so most of the time my days run long, trying to stop that). Doing the speed limit or a little under helps with my mpg. I carpool as much as I can but schedules conflict. Do live closer to work so that helps but it's still 38 miles round trip, not too bad but not exactly walking / biking distance. Maybe moped?

I would like to hit the highway, take a relaxing drive, but at +$3.30/gal, that's out of the question.

In So. Maryland the Sheetz and WaWas have gone up 10 cents a gallon in the last 2 weeks. I guarantee they're making at least 5 cents, maybe even 10 cents a gallon. Gouging at its most shameless. This is going to cost me close to 50 cents a week. Do these people think that we are all made of money?
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
Everyone had been up to $2.89 for 87 yesterday; this evening, most are down 4 cents to $2.85 (still a dime more than last weekend). Kangaroo is $2.83.

with regulations and so on and automakers not easily able to build rigs that get good ghastly mileage we're turned in to "yes men" :) to satisfy the oilmen.

Oh, I forgot, it's not the oil companies causing the gouging it's the futures' traders and umpteen middlemen.

I'm getting images of homeowners putting up signs during special events that say 'Parking $100.' Might as well make hay while the sun shines, huh?

Unleaded 87 octane dropped to $ 3.039 per gallon today for Harmon's Fuel Outlet (Sinclair brand). Chevron across the street $ 3.079.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
Down some more today -- this is crazy: Kangaroo at $2.79 for 87. Did some of the speculators collectively sneeze earlier this week to bump up the price for a few days?
  • oldfarmer50oldfarmer50 Member Posts: 24,192
At my local station (upstate NY) prices were just below $3 last week. Then the price of crude took a jump and gas followed, up to $3.05. This week oil is still climbing but gas dropped back to $2.99. What happened? Not that I'm complaining mind you.

I get a kick out of people who are dumping vehicles due to gas mileage. Don't they know that the hit you take on trade-in is more than the gas cost? A car that would have been worth 15K when gas prices are low is now going for 10K because dealers have a glut. Wait until gas prices go down and people are looking for the big boats again. Then trade for the little puddle jumpers that no one else wants. When gas goes back up (and it will) you can run your new car on the money you saved.

That's a good theory but it's based on a couple assumptions. First will gas prices ever go down significantly from today's level? My guess is that will probably happen. However the next assumption is that lower gas prices will immediately cause Americans to re-think they're vehicle purchases. I believe that Americans have adopted the correct mindset that sustained cheap gas is a thing of the past. However Americans do tend to have short memories and that mindset can change. So if gas fell below $2/gallon and stayed there for a year the large trucks/SUVs would once again be wildly popular. Barring a global recession I just don't see that happening.
  • tpetpe Member Posts: 2,342
I would really like for someone to explain to me why reduced refinery capacity should drive up the price of oil? I can understand how it drives up the price of gasoline, but not oil. Imagine there was zero refinery capacity. How much would oil be worth?
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Gonna get a big refinery expansion in MI to process some more of that sweet Canadian crude. And that eco-conscious energy company, BP, is going to get a little exemption from state pollution laws to sweeten the deal. BP gets break on dumping in lake

So whaddaya want - cheap gas or clean water?

$3.06 in Boise Friday night at the grocery store.

    Tpe,

Not sure. It just seems that when you get things figured out, some new excuse, I mean "reason" pops up and changes the thoughts/ideas you may have on what causes the oil price to jump. :confuse:

In any event, it just seems the price of crude goes up just to break previous years' records. I think pretty soon there won't be any reasons given, just hikes up the wazoo!!
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
That's a @#$%$!! shame. With all the goings-on with the environment, to give a company a break on pollution laws is crazy.

    Does Gore know about this?
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
It is a crying shame. Individuals aren't even supposed to put "drained" used oil filters in the trash anymore, yet big corporations can dump pollutants into lakes?

Gore is probably powerless, since he doesn't hold office. He can only preach from the "bully pulpit." But both US senators and the governor of Michigan are Democrats, and the state is seriously hurting for new jobs, what with the decline of the domestic auto industry.

That's true, Gore can't do anything except put up his thoughts and opinions on the subject. It just kind of burns you  that a big corp can once again buy its way out of adhering to the laws. And as you said, with Michigan hurting economically, (but according to the repubs and the rich, economy's doing swell) they pretty much have to do what they can to have some type of jobs growth.

Anyway, before I go too far off topic, the fuel prices have crept down a little by me over last week 40 cent-in-one-day rise. Average petrol price around the office location is $3.32 for 87 octane

My bad - the refinery expansion in Whiting, Indiana will dump stuff into Lake Michigan.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,672
This is the refinery where a small part had to shut down lasts week because of a "LEAK" they found and our gas prices went from $2.70 to $3.19 in a day or two. The section they shut down is larger than many refineries. So this must be a big place.

Prices started falling Saturday and today I paid $2.65 at Kroger with an extra 10 cents off of that with customer discount. Marathon and others up the street were also $2.65.

The refinery is at top center, between the words "Standard avenue" and the "20" road sign. Lake Michigan is at top right with an island extending into it for a steel mill or two.
Note all the tanks scattered around south of the refinery.

Gas prices in York, PA are holding at $2.87-$2.92.

Here's an interesting article from the Morning Call in Allentown, PA. Seems there is a gas war going on in the Allentown-Bethlehem area. Schoenersville Road is just east of the airport in case anyone needs to fill up in that area.

$2.57 and $2.59 at lowest area stations. $2.65 to $2.99 nominal price at the rest of them. Looks like $2.7x should be easy to find around the area.

I can't get over a store called "WaWa." I saw them when we were traveling to VA a few years back.

In Maryland WaWas were non-existent 4 years ago, now they're everywhere. WaWa and Sheetz are the WalMarts of gas station/convenience stores in my area and I suspect that they account for over 80% of all gas sales. They've pretty much put all the stations with 1 or 2 islands out of business because their mark-up on gas is minimal in order to get people into their stores. It's a business model that must be working. The price today at the So. MD WaWas is $2.87 for reg. unleaded.

Or maybe I should call it SOID, but then everyone would think something's been sold.

Anyway, in south west/southern Idaho/Boise, we have:

    $3.07 regular
    $3.19 mid grade
    $3.29 hi-test
    $2.99 diesel

Harmon's Grocery Fuel Stop $ 2.999 for 87 octane unleaded.

For some reason gas prices dropped $0.02 to $2.85 (regular unleaded).
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
...with prices spiking up 14 cents to $2.89 for 87, we're now back where we started, at least at Sheetz -- $2.75. The others will follow; most of them are at $2.79.
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,672
You can pay $2.89 at many stations around the area or you can go a mile or two and pay $2.49 at a cluster of stations where pricing is usually competitive except for the mandatory price rises. I filled up at $2.40 with the discount from a Kroger's card at one of their stations.

That might be the case back east.

Out here in Southern California and basically all of California the price for a gallon of fuel is still over $3.10 for 87 Octane at the cheapest stations, which is still very high.

Apparently all the whining and complaining that the people back east did after their price that they had to pay for a gallon of fuel went above $3.00 a gallon got the attention of their government. But not here in California, it appears that our government doesn’t care about its citizens having to do without just so they could buy some fuel to get to their job, doctor appointments, etc.

This is the price we pay for having an Immigrant, Dope Smoking Actor for our Governor.

Are Prices as of 07-20-07 are?
    87 Octane $3.10
    89 Octane $3.20
    91 Octane $3.30

We have been above $3.00 a gallon here in California again for the 2nd year in a row. Since March 2007 or for the last 5 months we have been paying over $3.00 a gallon.

Last year in 2006 we went above $3.00 a gallon in April 2006. It lasted until September 2006 and started to go down. So we basically paid over $3.00 a gallon last year which lasted for 5 months.

This seems to be a pattern that the Oil Companies and Service Stations are going to do to us from now on. I can’t predict the future, but I would be willing to put my rep on the line and say that they will do it to us again next year in 2008. One concern I have is that California is still well above $3.00 a gallon and if it does not drop below that point by next month, August 2007 then something in the pattern is changing. Only time will tell.

I’m very interested to find out from people in other states how long they have paid over $3.00 a gallon last year in 2006 and this year in 2007? For me it was easy to find out. I’ve kept a mileage chart, etc. with the price and amount I’ve paid for fuel since I bought my Tahoe in Jan 2006. I just made a spreadsheet and every time I fill up I keep a record of it and then transfer it onto my spreadsheet. So I can tell you exactly how much we paid for fuel here in California basically since Jan 2006.

I can not understand why California is and has been paying so much more for fuel compared to the other states. I’ve heard that even Arizona which is right next to California and about 2 hours from my home is and has been paying under $3.00 a gallon for quit some time. With all the refineries we have here in California one would think that our prices would be lower than other states. I’ve heard that since we have such strict pollution laws and the refineries have to add a blend to our summer fuel is the reason why we pay more. Then I’ve also heard that it cost less to make our fuel with the blend added. I also heard that the summer fuel is better and we would get better mpg. I haven’t noticed this in my vehicle.

So for those of you who pay $.70 less per gallon than we do in California I congratulate you on your success.

    E.M.S.

Sounds right in line with Idaho, where we usually seem to be in the top ten for high gas prices. Blame is usually placed on having only one gasoline pipeline out of Salt Lake City serving us. Most everything else is cheaper than SoCal though.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
My local Costco is holding under $3 per gallon for over six weeks now. That is better than last year this time. What surprised me was the price in states like NM, CO, UT and NV. They were all more than we are paying in San Diego this year. The only state less than us was AZ. Then it was only 6 cents per gallon less.

Look at the bright side you had to have gotten a heck of a deal on a Tahoe with gas prices so high. You can just figure you are riding in more comfort with the savings. To me riding in an econobox to save a few dollars in gas is not a very good trade-off. Not sure of your location. Most of the desert communities like Victorville had lower priced gas last year than we did in San Diego. We must have voted right in the last election down here.

Costco $2.95 per gallon. Last year this day it was $3.16 per gallon.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
We paid LESS for 87 octane gasoline in California June 2/3 and June 7 on return trip than we did in Utah. We also paid less June 23 and June 28 in California on return trip than in Utah.

Gasoline was $ 2.839 at ARCO and Costco in Garden Grove, $2.919 at Chevron in Anaheim, ($ 3.039 at Chevron just 2 blocks north of Disneyland on Harbor Blvd), and $ 2.979 for 87 octane EXXON in Barstow which is the same as in West Valley City Sinclair last night.

Check gas prices on the MSN network. :shades:

2.93, I forget the other gradients (I think premium was 3.17). The lowest I have seen in ages, usually WA is so much higher than everyone else. Must be the glory of supply and demand/free market economy/capitalism/something like that.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Is ARCO still cash only? I always pay at the pump and hardly ever carry cash. ARCO used to say they took cash to avoid the credit card fees but I really think they want you in the store to spend money on some donuts and Cokes.
  • rockyleerockylee Member Posts: 14,014
I paid $3.08 a gallon at Speedway in Grandville, Mi. a couple of days ago. I however joined the Speedy Rewards card promotion for an additional $0.15 cents off for $2.93 a gallon. :)

You can use ATM at ARCO with a $.45 charge. In Yuma, AZ the ARCO allows credit card with no premium attached. Most gas stations in San Diego charge $.10 per gallon to use your credit card. Costco is ATM or AMEX only. I carry cash. I hate to pay a service charge to use my own money from ATM.

Yes it has gotten quiet. I miss all the conspiracy/gouging rants. They were good entertainment. Anyway, with oil around $75/barrel we've probably seen the bottom as far as fuel prices are concerned. Gas in So. Maryland is $2.81 for regular unleaded. I'm predicting that it won't go any lower this summer. However, I have been wrong a couple times before.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I was surprised to see my Costco drop to $2.89. That is 28 cents lower than last year this date.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
I saw a WaWa sign advertising 87 octane for $2.759 in Millersville, MD. I thought about stopping and filling up, but the Intrepid was still at about 1/2 tank.

Where I'm at, Glenn Dale, MD, 87 is hovering around the $2.85-2.95 mark.

I forget what gasoline was around here this time last year, but I do remember last year that the most I paid was $3.249 to put 89 in my truck. So I'd imagine that 87 was around $3.149.
