Good evening, everyone. It is 11:46 pm est, as I type this out.. First, a quick movie review, do not go and see "The Strangers".. I am 41 and for the over 40 crowd here it would only irritate.. A thriller/scare flick that is, how can I say it, formulaic, is that a word? :) Anyway, the best part of the night was dinner @ Big River Grille in downtown Chattanooga, TN.. I highly recommend it... :)

Ok, gas price update for the great State of TN... According to gasbuddy.com, they have a gas station in Lebanon, TN, which is middle TN, selling RUG @ $4.14/Gal!! Holy Cow!.. Quoting the late, great Harry Caray, voice of the Chicago Cubs.. Also, Woodbury, TN has the highest average price for RUG @ $3.93/Gal... I believe that is middle or west TN... East TN has 9 of the 15 lowest prices for RUG, averaging around $3.70/Gal... I believe diesel was around $4.69/Gal for the most part... We are paying anywhere from $3.71/Gal to $3.82/Gal in Chatt town... Hope you and yours are doing well, despite the gas prices... :)

3.93 for 87 octane. And we have a refinery here which has made record profits! And cracks down other refinery left overs.I don't think they touch any foreign oil.But we have to pay for the shipping where they have competion, like Erie,Pittsburgh, etc!

...in at least 15 years - cash price/credit price at a BP Fuels/Amoco outside of Langhorne, PA: Regular = $3.99 Credit Price = $4.07.

Sheesh, a lot of people are paying with credit cards these days as it's pretty inconvenient to carry around large amounts of cash. I recently filled my girlfriend's car and handed the guy a fifty! Not too long ago, it would've been a twenty and I'd have received change!
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
BP/ARCO stations in CA refuse to take CC. You can use your ATM for a service charge. Or it is CASH in ADVANCE only. Many stations are posted with cash price and credit price. Usually 10 cents per gallon more for credit. Shell gives back 5% for using their CC. Costco gives back 3% for using their CC. All stations in CA are pay in advance. Most now have the automatic Kiosk that takes cash or CC.

    San Diego
    Costco Regular $4.09
    cheapest diesel $4.79
    Cheapest Shell $4.39

I'm amazed that there can be no credit card stations in this day and age. Now here in NJ it wouldn't be that big a deal because there is no self serve, but in 48 states with self serve I would think the credit operation pays for itself. I guess Arco thinks otherwise.

They haven't hit us with extra charges for credit. That would throw my ol' calculator off. I buy all my gas on a credit card that pays me 5% rebate. If they want to start eating that up I'd have to consider where my "it's not worth it" point is.

    I guess Arco thinks otherwise.

I think it is an ARCO California thing. I go to the ARCO right across the border in Yuma AZ and they take CC and are always cheaper than the stations in CA. The ones that charge to use a CC have it posted on their signs. They are also the most expensive stations in town. They are Spirit Gas. I think it is a Russian company. Putin probably owns them  Last Friday they were at $4.49 and the ARCO across the street was $4.03.
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Yow! An extra $.46 to buy Russian gas with a credit card?

We used to have loads of those two tiered pricing stations but it's been a long time. Of course it's also been a long time since we had Arco stations as well. They folded up their tent in the east maybe 20 years ago. They were the first people that offered me a credit cars - maybe my junior year of college. It seemed Shell bought up all the Arcos out here but the ones I knew have now closed up altogether.

I've had problems with ARCO, even with debit cards, and tend to avoid them.

The big fuel news around here is that the service stations bumped the credit card maximum up from $75 to $100.

So now I can get half a tank of gas, cool :shades:
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
...when the card reader on the pump is defective and it reads SEE ATTENDANT. Not in these days of identity theft! I'm paranoid about handing the waiter a credit card in a restaurant! I dig in and pay cash at that point.

I fill my cars when they get to about 3/4 tank these days. I doesn't hurt as much if you take the pain a little at a time. I can't see putting in $100 of fuel all at once!

..when the card reader on the pump is defective and it reads SEE ATTENDANT. Not in these days of identity theft!

I'm with you on handing someone I don't know my CC. The new Shell station I have been going to since I got my Shell card, has the latest pumps. They are very modern with a TV showing the news and traffic live. One of the first times I used pump #1 it did not print a receipt. I went in and the clerk printed one for me. Next time I went to pump one and same thing no receipt. When I went in to get a receipt the girl says yeah it prints out on pump 11. So I head over to pump 11 and here is a string of receipts from several customers including mine. I tell you that did not give me a good feeling as it has your name and the last 4 digits on your CC.

Filled up at the BP in Titusville, NJ for the first time in over a week. I was expecting it to be over $4 but lucky for me, It's still below. Don't know how much longer it'll last.

    Unleaded . . . . $3.89
    Regular . . . . . $4.01
    Premium . . . . $4.10

When I went up to the Poconos during the Memorial Day Weekend, We filled up my SE-R in Jackson, NJ for $3.75 at the Sunoco on our way back home. Had to use my giftcard.

for lo-test at the local Shell I pass by every workday in Seabrook, MD. So basically, $4/gal gas is here, even for the cheap stuff now.

Do you ever take the Xterra out these days? What's the fuel economy like on it?
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,023
That Xterra is actually my roommate's. I can't remember the last time I've driven it. It'll break 20 mpg on the highway, but in mixed local driving (some highway) I think my roommate's getting around 17-18.

That sounds like horrible fuel economy, but the thing weighs 4200 pounds, the same as my Silverado. And of my cars, only my Intrepid gets better economy.

Still, my roommate is happy with it, and hasn't complained too much about fuel prices. His previous vehicle was a 1998 Chevy Tracker convertible, which, despite being so tiny would only get around 20 mpg in local driving, and maybe 24-25 on the highway. It only had a 3-speed automatic and really short gearing. IIRC, it would pull around 3700 rpms at 55 mph. So at 70 mph, that would be more like 4700 rpm. The Xterra has a 5-speed automatic, and tends to loaf along at maybe 1800-2000 rpm at 70, unless it has to downshift.

Hixson, TN RUG is now $3.74/gal... No extra charge for using your BP card here in TN.. I believe we are at the end of the pick-up truck era with GM's announcement from yesterday involving the reduction of SUV and Trucks production... I read a business article on Yahoo! where GM management is expecting a permanent shift to fuel efficient cars in the USA, just like it is now in Europe.. I also read articles that stated GM thinks gas will get to at minimum, $5.00/gal.. Sorry for getting off topic a little here..

    Everyone have a nice evening..

Just filled the Ranger at Costco. $4.21 per gallon. Last time I filled it the price was $3.79 per gallon. That was May 12th. So 42 cents in 24 days.

Tap water is still cheaper then gas just keep hydrated.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
You better drink bottled water in AZ. When I lived there it was not fit for humans. And bottled water is a lot more expensive than gas...
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
Well they do make water filters you know. Most water in AZ is well water anyway and I have lived off well water almost my whole life. Just make sure your sediment filter is in good shape and if the water turns a little gray add a Brita filter to the tap.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
The water is high in alkaline if memory serves me. I am sure with reverse osmosis it can be made safe to drink. That is what I use here in San Diego. I think Phoenix gets most of its water from the Colorado river. As does So CA and Las Vegas.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
That station that had $4.039 yesterday?

    $4.099 today.

If it goes up 6 cents every day it will be $4.50 in no time !!!!

At one of our 3 BP Stations, all within 1 mile of each other... I filled up at 5012 Hixson Pike...

    Regular - $3.77
    Silver - $3.90
    Ultimate - $4.03

1 mile south at the BP off Hwy 153, Regular was going for $3.80, an extra 3 cents there... I also saw where crude oil closed at $138.54 per barrel today on the commodities exchange... we had a 3 cent increase from this morning's prices.
  • jac0bsdadjac0bsdad Member Posts: 34
BP Station @ 5012 Hixson Pike... Last night, 06/06/08, I paid $3.77.. Saturday morning prices for 06/07/08 are as follows:

    Regular - $3.88
    Silver- $4.01
    Ultimate - $4.14

11 cent increase overnight... highest single day increase I have seen before at this station was 17 cents... It looks like TN gas prices are headed to $4.00 just like other parts of the country...
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
The station up the street from work went up a dime today to the magic $3.999. It's traditionally a little higher than the rest of the surrounding area because it is a touch off the beaten path. Will see what the main drag brings later.

...our prices have been holding steady for a week or so with 87 at $3.84 and the other grades only 10 and 20 cents more at the lowest-price places. Today, Hess jumped 7 cents for all grades, but I was still able to fill up at Chevron at the "old" price of $3.84.

Diesel is about $4.69 - $4.70 at the places that carry it.

Sunoco truck stop, Palisades Park NJ

    87 - $3.899
    89 - $3.999
    91 - $4.079
    93 - $4.099
    diesel - $4.659

Mount Arlington Exxon, Mt. A NJ

    87 - $3.999
    89 - $4.139
    93 - $4.299
    diesel - $4.919

Was in California this past week and saw prices generally 25-35 cents higher for gas (than the Exxon), and diesel was around $5.20-5.25.

I went by four stations in a couple of miles a little while ago and RUG ranged from $3.83 at the discount "club" station (cash price) to $4.07 at Shell and Chevron. The Stinker was $3.89.

Diesel was $4.89 at the Shell.

    87 octane - $4.499
    Diesel - $4.999 (down! from $5.099)

for 87 octane for the Intrepid this morning at the local Shell in Seabrook, MD. I didn't notice the other prices, but yesterday I topped my Silverado off there with 93 octane, and it was $4.239.

Fortunately, the Silverado will probably go about 3 weeks before refueling, and heck, I could probably get a month out of the Intrepid if I put my mind to it.
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
was actually cheaper than my normal Jewel / Meijer. The cheapest on my route was actually the Shell across the street from the job, at $4.099 for 87 octane, and it stayed that price all day. The BP across the way increased from $4.119 @ 6:30am to $4.179 at 4:30pm when I filled up, which is pretty normal. What was abnormal was that the Shell didn't follow suit, as they are usually in tandem. The BP was empty, like a ghost town.

My usual fill-up spots were at $4.149 and $4.199. The two Citgo's by work were also $4.099, the Speedway on my route was $4.199. The city is running about 30 cents more on average than what we pay out here.

So far for the year I'm averaging just a tick above 20mpg, all city / stop-n-go driving, despite all the issues I've had with the vehicle. I haven't taken it on any highway runs since early last year so can't report on that mileage. Hopefully will have the issues resolved and maybe have an uptick in mileage (fingers crossed).

Went to the Eastern Shore of Virginia last week, and 87 was typically $3.95, but a few places including the Valero where I filled up were $3.85 (this was a week ago Sunday). On the way back home, almost everyone was up to $3.95 or a little higher, crossing the $4 mark in Virginia Beach.

I managed to make it home without adding any more gas. Put in a new high of $61.00 in my '05 Camry at $3.91 at the local Kangaroo (central VA).
  • fezofezo Member Posts: 10,386
Well, here in one of those pockets of resistance I saw my first $4 RUG. For quite a bit it looked like no one wanted to be the first to break the barrier but now it's happened. I expect everyone else to follow suit.

A couple Shell stations are at $4.959 for regular. That is higher than I can get diesel for. Several stations are selling diesel under $4.80 per gallon. Lots of places have premium over $5 a gallon.
  • british_roverbritish_rover Member Posts: 8,502
How long has diesel been less then RUG again? Diesel prices dropped a few cents this past week to 4.90-4.95 in some places but is holding over 5.00 dollars in others.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Most places diesel is still higher than regular and about on a par with Premium. The point being most diesel vehicles get 30% better mileage making it still a better deal if you are fortunate enough to own a diesel vehicle.
  • larsblarsb Member Posts: 8,204
    RUG is $4.19, premium $4.39, diesel $4.99.

  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
for $4.139 on my way back from an outing. The stations by home were actually higher by about 5 ~ 10 cents.

I don't know about the rest of you guys / gals where you live but here people are driving like $4 is nothing. Meaning, people are burning rubber at every stoplight, pedal to the metal, every chance they get, racing to the next red light or traffic jam! I was on the I-88 toll yesterday and, even in the construction zone, people were hauling [non-permissible content removed], shooting past me & a couple others like we were going backwards. I was doing 5-over (trying to avoid a $375 speeding fine but not backing up traffic) and I was getting blown by like nothing. Yeesh!! Guess I'm the only one effected by the fuel prices. :confuse:

Luckily today it was more subdued on the work route (thinking it was due to too many celebrating yesterday's sweep in the Cross-Town Classic & didn't make it into work today.)
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
Maybe the inflated prices and declining real incomes most people are experiencing via a variety of fronts are making people frustrated, so they drive a little jerky.
  • explorerx4explorerx4 Member Posts: 20,723
some people don't want it too look to everyone like they are the ones being affected by the high gas prices, so they drive fast.
over the weekend, i took the explorer in for it's bi-annual emissions test.
i had to dip into the throttle a few times to get some heat into the engine, before the test. ;)
