I'm still a year behind frankly. Just getting into season 4 on DVD.

I pass it on my commute to work. Its on 17 South near Hackensack.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
What's it really??? Is it a club? What's it called?
  • cornellpinoycornellpinoy Member Posts: 196
I believe its a gentleman's club called "Satin Dolls". Its just one of the many places I drive by that I've seen on the Sopranos. The courthouse in Hackensack, a pizzeria in Lodi, a pizzeria in Kearny, a diner in South Kearny also readily come to mind. And yes, in this season, Tony drives 2 different Escalade ESVs - one black, one white diamond.

Well good, I'm glad to see he upgraded from the old Burb. I was getting tired of that one.

Yeah, I heard on TV---Can't remember if it's E-Entertainment or what--but they said Bill Gates drives a Lexus LX 470.
I could have owned a million Hummer, Range Rovers, Mercedes G-Class, Rolls Royces, Maybach, but no. He drives a Lexus LX 470, which tells me that the richest man in the WORLD loves this vehicle for it's greatness, not for name recognition.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Bill's garage is only 6,300 square feet, so the LX 470 only has to compete with 8 or 10 other cars for his attention. (link)

Well, I'm not sure what he keeps in the other two garages...

No Steve, he owns 16 vehicles.
That's ten LS430 and six LX470---one color of each, of course:-)
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
OR, maybe he has no friggin clue what it is he even is driving, somebody in the organization just bought him a car, and he barely knows where the key goes?

OR, maybe the other 15 cars are the really nice ones, and his LX is his slummin' car?

    We don't know!!!

He was pretty well known in his younger days for racing to the airport and don't forget that fancy Porsche that sat in a bonded customs warehouse for years before it was modified enough to be registered for street use.

He's had a least one run-in with the traffic cops as evidenced by this famous mug shot:

    The Smoking Gun

He was a notorius LS400 lover. So was Ballmer. There were many pix of Gates in LS400's shown over the years. Personally I always thought it was to personalize Microsoft as Lexus and IBM as MB. But then Microsoft blew way past IBM in value and Gates never changed. I'd be surprised if Gates didn't own a Porsche or two and maybe a Lexus SC as well. Don't have his 50+bln but it's nice to know I have a few of the luxuries he has.

You know that picture link could be a good Microsoft commercial. Just add in something like "details like that can no longer disappear in a 'Windows' world." My son likes to wear his hair with bangs like that. Could I have a Gates under development or an upcoming driving problem? I hope neither.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
Well, I love the SC430, and hate Gates' bangs. I wonder if Bill's navigation system in his Lexus asks, ARE YOU SURE every time he gives a command?
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
You see Donald Trump doing TV commercials lately.
If Lexus could get Bill Gates to do a Lexus Commercial, that would be cool.

Lexus will be doing Windows commercials before that happens! :-)

    Ha Ha, probably right, tidester......

He's probably the right huxter though. It matters. I always thought Tiger Woods should have been in something a lot more classy than a Buick Rendezvous - the car was beneath him. He would look much better in an SRX or something.

Has anyone out there installed the TRD supercharger on their LX470?
  • hrenghreng Member Posts: 3
Has anyone heard of a problem with the paint? I have a brown LX 470 and I am seeing
white clouds coming up from beneath the paint. It does not look good. Any suggestions?
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
    1) Have you owned it since new?

    2) Has it ever been repainted in the affected area?
  • sassenachsassenach Member Posts: 1
Yes, my LX-470 which is 99 in Topaz color developed that cloudiness in paint like you describe, and it got worse pretty rapidly once it started.

It was very bad on the hood, and some spots on the front part of roof were turning whitish.

I bought the car used with 38K miles, and didn't notice any paint problem, but in about a year (fall 2003) it was looking pretty bad. The car was out of the general warranty by then, however I did get it repainted, gratis by the dealer.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
It's rare for factory paint to do this, so I suspected a re-paint, for which this phenomenon is fairly common. But I suppose, even Toyota could produce defective paint at the factory. But I wouldn't have thought it.
  • hrenghreng Member Posts: 3
I am the original owner of the 470 and it was never repainted.

I am very happy with the truck, but this paint issue is really getting to be upsetting. The dealer said a Lexus paint expert has to look at it and he is only in once a month. I really hope they don't give me the "Acid Rain" excuse.

I have pictures of the clouding under the finish. Can you post pictures on this site?

The condition is rapidly getting worse as described above - now on the roof as well.

Thanks for listening to me complain.
  • hrenghreng Member Posts: 3
Thanks for the message. It gives me hope that Lexus will do the right thing. Did they repaint the whole car or just the affected parts? If they did only parts did the white clouds show up on any of the unpainted sections? How long did it take? Were you happy with the final product? Sorry about all the questions, but the more I think about it the more issues arise. Thanks again.

I have narrowed down to 2 choices from two different dealers:

1999 lx470 (gray) for $23000 with 78870 miles on it. Or
2000 lx470 (white) for $30000 with 65000 miles on it.

They are both clean. Both are off leases. The 1999 has been leased twice. One interesting thing about the 1999 is that between 6/01 and 9/02 (15 months) the odomter has only 1000 miles increase according the CarFax report. The dealer insists it was sitting in their parking lot all that time because they couldn't sell it.
Here is the detail of the report:

OK..... The dealer is probably right about the 99 having a birthday on his lot. OR somebody's lot. Clearly, it's not been in service anywhere.

Between those two, I would consider the difference in mileage vs. the difference in price. Do you drive a lot? If so, I may spend the extra money to get the lower miles. If I don't drive so much, or if the extra money is tough to come up with right now, I would go with the 99.

I take it the color isn't critical.

Atleast on the Land Cruiser model, I know that the 2000 model year went through a bit of changes esp in the drive train and four-wheel drive system. The 2000 on models' four wheel is connected to the ABS and stablity system and the 1998 and 1999 models have the traditional setup. For off-roading, I have heard the 1998 and 1999 models are much better compared to the newer ones. I am pretty sure the changes in Land Cruiser also got trickled over to the LX.

Can anyone else confirm this ?
  • kexicaokexicao Member Posts: 30
No, I don't drive a lot. Most in weekend taking kids to activities. The reliability and safety is my most concern.
  • gteach26gteach26 Member Posts: 576
1000 miles in 15 months.... that 99 was for sale a LOOOONG time. Why? LX's shouldn't be for sale that long unless outrageously overpriced.

Also, I know of a friend who knows a friend who knows a cousin ;) who TAMPERED with his LX470's odometer when his lease mileage got out of hand -- apparently it isn't as hard as you'd think. Disgusting practice, I agree, but it DOES happen.

I'm not sure how you'd be able to tell if that's happened on your potential 99 -- perhaps take it to your mechanic for a thorough look?

Then again, I get real nervous with non-certified lux vehicles, even though lexus has a wonderful reputation for reliability.

If I had to pick, I'd go with the 2000. Why? To me, white on the LX looks very classy, you've got an extra 13K miles to play with (that's about a year's worth driving for me), and there are no mileage mysteries to deal with.

    Good luck!
  • kexicaokexicao Member Posts: 30
Someone reminded me that the 2000 470 with 65000 miles on it should still have about 5K manufacture warranty on it. The seller is a small non-lexus dealer whom may have bought it from an auction. How can I find out the past maintenance records and to make sure lexus will still honor its warranty?
  • gteach26gteach26 Member Posts: 576
Take the VIN# to your nearest Lexus dealership and they'll give you the history. Regardless of where it was serviced (as long as it was done at a Lexus dealership), you'll get all of the info.

If it was not serviced at Lexus then you're out of luck unless the previous owner kept good maintenance records.

In any case, this warranty "cushion" would seal the deal on the 2000 for me. If there is anything seriously wrong with this truck just make it a point to find out before warranty expires!

    Good luck!

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. We curently have a 2001 LX470 with 42K miles. It is in excellent condition with the only "off-roading" being a speed bump or two in a local parking lot. Here is the challenge:

Wife would like a new "safer" vehicle as the 2001 does not have side airbags/curtains. Therefore, we are looking at both the LX and QX. We know the LX has the quality/refinement thing hands down. However, the QX does have some additional advancements in safety, plus a 3rd row that folds flat. Has anyone recently gone thru this process?

Are the side curtains such a huge improvement? Obviously, they are great to have, but at the expense of buying a new 2004 or slightly used 2003 vehicle?

I can probably get $37-39K (private party) for my Lexus, but then have to dish out $52-54K for the Infiniti or $62K for the Lexus.

    Thoughts?

Our 01 Toyota Land Cruiser lease is up in October. After 90,000+ miles we decided to look around at "other" options. Simply put - there's nothing out there that compares with the Land Cruiser/LX470.

As for the QX56 - it has a more powerful engine, has fresher styling (but that too is subjective), and maybe a few safety features your rig doesn't have. But check out the quality of materials on the interior and the general build quality. Most of the dashboard controls on the QX56 feel like they won't make it past 10,000 miles. Build quality of the seats is also suspect.

If you want more luxury and don't mind giving up cargo space, move up to a Range Rover. If you want more performance, consider the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne or VW Touareg.

If the side curtain airbags are the critical issue, get another LX. Get another interior or exterior color for a change of pace. Don't forget, with the current gas prices, you should be able to get a good deal on the LX.

(BTW - we've decided to but out the lease on our TLC because all the feedback I've gathered from serious Cruiser people indicates the truck will be good for 200,000-300,000 miles with minimal service. By that time Toyota will more than likely have a hybrid V8 powertrain in one of their SUVs good for 20-30 MPG>)
  • andrewtran71andrewtran71 Member Posts: 840
Yeah, I test drove the QX56 and I was 100% disappointed with the build quality of all the knobs, buttons, controls, gated shifter, and and pretty much everything. The NAV on the QX56 is terrible compared to the LX 470 and Landcruiser also. Well, the NAV on the QX56 is horrific compared to a Honda Accord's 7" Voice-activated NAV system! But the LX 470 is probably at least $10K more than the QX56.
My impression is that for the build quality, I would rather get the Armada instead of the QX56 and save $10K. The build quality of the Armada is the same as the QX56.
If I get the Armada for $25K less than the LX 470, then I think it's justifiable. But if I get the QX56 for only $10K less than the LX 470, it's harder for me to justify.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
I like the way the QX-56 drives and feels to drive, and I like the power and the engine. But I agree with the previous two opinions. The build quality is uncertain at this time, and the interior feels Chevy cheap to me. I would at least wait a year before considering either of the Nissan offerings. The LX is a sure thing if it's quality you want. Frankly, I found the Navigator to be a better alternative to the QX from a feature and quality standpoint. The LX is too small for my current needs.

    I bought a 2000 black LX470!

Thank you all for the wonderful and thoughtful suggestions.

The 2000 one I mentioned before ($30K, 65K mi and white) was from a small dealer and was not certified. Worst of all, the price could not be negotiated. Then I found another 2000 black LX from a local Lexus dealer. It's a CPO with only 44K miles on it. The dealer is asking for $35K and we ended with $33K. The car is in an unbelievable mint condition that you can even smell the leather. The car was a lease from the dealer's previous client. I checked all service records which showed that it has done the maintenance at the dealer every 5k miles. The dealer put 4 new tires, actually they cheated, one of the 4 was the original spare.

With the CPO's 3-year bumper to bumper warranty, I really feel like I am driving a brand new LX.

I do have one question though. The ride feels pretty stiff. I tried to change it from sport to comfort doesnt seem made any difference. My question is does the switch between comfort and sport should make big difference?

    KC
  • gteach26gteach26 Member Posts: 576
    Congrats on your purchase!

To be honest, I've tried changing ride settings on the LX and LS430 ultra and to be perfectly honest I sense NO changes in ride or handling whatsoever!

BIG BUT.... I've only checked this "ride control" feature during quickie test drives (<20 miles highway/city). Other folks will swear that flicking that switch completely changes the personality of the car... I don't feel it though.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
Ditto. However, the changes aren't designed to be "felt" as much as "experienced" during certain stressful maneuvers. Shock dampening and roll stability will more likely be noticed in emergency or defensive moves than in the road feel going straight.
  • kexicaokexicao Member Posts: 30
Interesting way to put it. But I still don't get it. If you can't feel it, how can you experience it? Please don't tell me it's some kind of religious thing :)
  • gteach26gteach26 Member Posts: 576
My opinion on the ride setting feature is that the average driver (that's me!!) won't notice much, but the car "aficionado" will. Like nvbanker said, you'd probably only notice the changes during faster, more aggressive maneuvers.

It does seem logical though... want a smoother ride? Click on "comfort"...want a stiffer ride? Click on "sport". For some reason though I just have never noticed the change in ride.

To me its just like the height control feature... sales people LOVE to show how the car raises and lowers an inch or two with the hit of the switch but in "real world" driving I don't think its a big deal.

As far as how to make your LX ride "less stiff" that's beyond my scope. I'm sure someone else will chime in to help out. Perhaps different tires? You might also want to check out the Toyota Landcruiser forum (same truck as the LX with less toys) here on Edmunds... there you'll find people who are well acquainted with every nut and bolt of the the platform and might be able to help you as well.

Good luck and enjoy your new ride!!!
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
Ya see, the tolerances for this "ride difference" are pretty narrow. You can't have a truck like the LX wallowing around like a Buick Roadmaster, even in town. Wouldn't be safe. So there is a marginal difference allowed by the dampeners only. And it's practically undiscernable most days. There are certain times though, if you drive the same place every day, that you may notice a difference in how the suspension reacts to adverse maneuvers, or unusual road conditions.

Frankly, most owners don't even know what the button is really for. I don't know why they bother.
  • toottoottoottoot Member Posts: 13
We can notice a difference...we typically keep the dial locked in the middle range...however on a winding stretch of freeway heading out of San Diego towards Az we dial it to a sportier setting and we do not feel as much body roll. However, we do feel a bit more of the roughness that comes along with California highways.

While driving around town we do not notice much of anything.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
    Exactly~! Great illustration. Thanks.

I definitely noticed some differences between sport and comfort. The sport setting was always bumpier but not really harsher. It's less noticable on highway driving. But the comfort setting rode more like a lux sedan. But it is a truck so in certain instances it will let you know it no matter how great the ride is on a smooth highway. If the ride is too stiff at the comfort setting you may want to have it checked when you service it. The 2000 LX I had was a phenomenal SUV.

I recently traded my 98 LS400 for a 01 LX470. There was a dealer sticker on the inside of the rear door window. It was securely glued and I removed it with a razor blade scraper. After cleaning the glue off I cleaned the window with glass cleaner. I then noticed marks on the window from the razor blade which I cannot remove. I have been scraping stickers off windows for years and have never seen a blade do this to a window. I was told that the privacy glass is tinted through and not an external application. Has anyone had a similar experience?
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
Your assumption is also what I have experienced. Sounds like this LX has some aftermarket tint applied as well, perhaps to make it Limo dark.
  • docrock143docrock143 Member Posts: 18
I have a 2003 Lexus LX470 which is coming up on the 30K service. The vehicle has always been serviced at the dealership where I purchased the SUV...however, the dealership wants $750 for the 30K service.

Around a half-mile from the dealership is an independent service facility run by two ex-Lexus dealership master mechanics. They work almost exclusively on Lexus vehicles. Their charge for the 30K service is $410 ($340 less than the dealership.)

I am torn about what to do. I feel like I should be loyal to the dealership which has generally provided excellent service..yet an extra $350 to pay them makes me think twice. If I take the vehicle elsewhere, my service at the dealership may not be as excellent (if I am seen as dis-loyal).

    Any comments? Thanks!
