I live in South Florida and got a quote from a local dealer on an Audi Q3. I am wondering if this is a fair price? Also, curious how they calculated the sales tax since my understanding in Florida is the sales tax is 6% and then Broward county has a 1% sur tax up to a maximum of $5,000 or $50 maximum. The car is a 2024 Audi Q3 40 TFSI Premium (MSRP of $37,400) with Mythos Black Metallic ($595), Black interior, Convenience package ( $1,750), Black optic package ($1,300), Black Audi rings and badges ($350), Audi guard protection kit ($305), and Audi beam "rings" ($295), Destination charge ($1,195) for a total of $43,190. Then they are taking lane guidance off (-$300) for a MSRP of $42,890. From the MSRP of $42,890, they are taking $4,495 off for MPA or Discount, another $2,000 off for Rebates for an adjusted sales price of $36,395. Then they add $1,199 for Processing/Doc Fees, $1,495 for Protection Package and $816.50 for Tag, Title and Impact Fees. Estimated Sales tax is $2,564.33. Total cost of the car is $42,469.83. Is the cost before taxes of $39,905.50 a good price for this car? Then how is the sales tax calculated. At 6% of $36,395, I get $2,183.70. Then with the $50 for Broward it is $2,233.70 which is a decent amount less than the $2,564.33 estimated taxes. Finally, the protection package, if i am buying the car and paying cash (no financing) why do i have to get this if i don't want it? Dealer says I have to. Thank you very much

I'm fairly certain that the tax rate for autos in FL is 7%. In any case, taxes will be applied to the price, before customer incentives (rebates) are deducted.

As you've found, the big discount comes with caveats. Namely, a $1200 fee for nothing, and a $1500 charge for something that's probably worth $300-$500, at most.

You just have to add those charges back into the sale price, then determine if you still think it's a good deal. Also, competitive quotes from other dealers will help you determine the market.
