That's good news about the liftgate. The hinged deal on the new Lexus maybe more of a market targeting thing.

Is it time for a new pool to see who can post the first unwrapped '03 4runner photo in all its glory? THE RULES: #1) Buzzlight excluded; #2) has to be an angle shot with no anti-spy coverings whatsoever. THE PRIZE: membership in the Edmund's 4Runner bulletin board hall of fame. Current members are Cliffy and RWard.

This is an exhibition, not a competition...please, no wagering.

I believe a light in my CD player has gone out. Does anyone know how to change the panel display (dashboard) lights in the 97 4Runner?

GK, I've studied just about every SUV out there and you've mentioned the only other one I know of with a power window in the liftgate, beside the 4Runner.

As far as the '02 vs '03 debate, I'm waiting for the new 4Runner. As I've stated in numerous postings, the current model lacks too many things that I want in an SUV. At the top of the list are power and better interior, especially the joystick shifter and placement of it. Additionally, I really want my next truck to be an all-new design. But the current 4R is a great truck, and I've had a hard time weighing it's short-comings against it's bold design, high ground clearance, and quality, especially after they added the Sport Edition. For me, power is number 1, so that alone has always swayed me from the 4Runner, which is why I didn't buy one in the fall of '97, and haven't since.

Everyone has their own reasons for the vehicle they purchase and drive, and if more power and some updates to the interior and list of gizmos isn't all that important to you, I say take advantage of the current savings and get that 2002! It really is a great truck. I'm in no hurry to trade mine, so I'm planning on waiting until after December for the better deals and the addition of the V6, so I can test both engines out. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it'll be the right decision for you. Best of luck!

KJack100, you're on! Sounds like a great, friendly way to get those pictures out immediately to all of us fanatics, who can't stand another minute waiting to see what the new 4Runner is going to look like. Count me in! -TB

Tbcreative and gkexec: Did you forget about the Sequoia? Its got the power tailgate window, but I still prefer my '96 runner and am waiting on the 2003. They better not do away with one of my (and my dogs) favorite features of the vehicle.
  • jamesbass1jamesbass1 Member Posts: 75
When you mentioned the power window in the liftgate, were you referring to what's similar in the current 2002, or the older 1995 tailgate version?

I too can't wait to test drive the 2003 4Runner, but I also see some great advantages in purchasing this last year production 2002. The latest drop in price is one big reason alone. The 2003's probably won't see any deals come along for quite awhile...no kidding. Unless you have something very heavy to tow, the current V-6 is plenty enough power for American highways and will get you there with decent mpg. The 2002 has had a few years to tweak production and has refined an already great vehicle to be even more reliable. I'm always leary of first production models, even if it is a Toyota. Just a few points to note in case you want to get a 2002 and not too wild about having to leap on the "latest greatest" new vehicle coming out. I know, because I purchased a 1995 4Runner in August of '95, knowing full well about the new model coming out the next month. Got a FANTASTIC deal, and am still driving it with over 252,000 miles...it still looks good too!
  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
Leodogs, I actually didn't know that about the Sequoia because I really don't care for it, and I was thinking more about all the SUVs in the same size range as the 4Runner. But that's good to know that Toyota has used that on one of their biggest successes. That should reinforce their reason for using it with the new Runner.

Jamesbass1, what I've been told is that it's like the current liftgate, not a tailgate. I have been wishing someone would come out with a liftgate that could also double as a tailgate that would drop down separately, because there are times when I really like my tailgate for hauling or sitting on. Dodge is the first one to attempt it on their Power Box concept, and I believe DC has a patent pending on it. Leave it up to Chrysler to bring out yet another great innovation, but I wish Toyota would have thought of it for the new 4Runner. It would be that much closer to perfection!

Here's an article from Korea/Japan confirming that the GX470 is the Land cruiser Prado. See the 3rd paragraph of the article.

  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
Right, hiluxsurf. They confirm what we've been saying that the all-new 2003 Land Cruiser Prado and 2003 GX 470 share the same platform, which differs from the current Prado.

Here's the quote: "Although Toyota will introduce eight NEW models this year including the Land Cruiser Prado (Lexus GX470)..."

    Thanks for the update!

Last year half of the lights on my CD player (ie the right half of the green lights #'s 4 to 6) went
dark. I took it to the Toyota Dealer who sent me to a large car audio specialty shop. There they removed the entire stereo and directed me to a couple of smaller electronics shops.
I took it to one of them who replaced the lights that day; sort of ! He replaced the burnt out
green lights with ORANGE ones. This did not go over in a big way and I did not find this out
until I had the stereo re-installed back at the car audio place. I phoned the Toyota dealer who
had a technician remove it again, then back to the electronic shop who installed DULL
green bulbs instead of the bright OEM ones. Of course I did not realize this until I had had
the stereo re-installed back at the dealership. WHAT A HASSLE! After this experience which
took 3 days and numerous trips to various businesses, I am living with this part of the OEM
stereo illuminated with dull green lights and the rest of the dash and stereo with bright green
ones. It just wasn't worth the hassle to take it back again! Some day when I have 3 more spare days to waste I will have it done right. The whole unsatisfactory mess cost me about
$50.00 CDN. Good luck with yours!

Heck, you've helped me quite a bit here and at the Sienna topic. I'm glad you're hanging around here.

Say, you wouldn't know of a cushy factory job where they would overpay me to do very little do you?
  • md2002md2002 Member Posts: 142
If there won't be any V6's available until Dec/Jan does that mean they are only making Ltd models (I thought the V8 was only available in the Ltd.). If so that really stinks as most people don't want a Ltd (me, why not) just depends on price.

Besides my dealer owes me from the last debacle of my 2000 4RUNNER and they know it every time I am there (politely though). But really we are replacing the cars next year anyway so it will be either the Doc's 2000 TLC off lease in Jan., a new 2003 4RUNNER or a 2003 Highlander (so the wife can use it).

Just waitin for Sept. Hey I will try to find out where the local dealer is doing the drive and show thingy so I can do spy photo's.

Shucks, I will really miss my tailgate. The Cruiser is the only Toyota SUV with a tailgate. I well remember back in 1987 when I bought my 1986 4Runner Turbo (w/cool digital dash!)that the electric window inside the tailgate was a big item that sealed the deal for me. It was also another big item I took into consideration 8 years later when I bought that last production 1995 4Runner rather than pay primo+ sticker price for the 1996 coming out a month later...that Cruiser is looking better and better to me, or maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into one!..ha,ha. But seriously, I know alot of people that miss the older tailgates in the 4Runners and wonder why Toyota did away with it?
  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
md2002, my understanding it that the V8 is not just exclusive to the Limited, but I could be wrong. It would be a HUGE mistake on the part of Toyota to not offer it. I may decide I like the 8 better, but I don't want a Limited either, well at least if it shares the same components as the current Limited. Leather is a pain in the [non-permissible content removed], literally, in Arizona in the middle of the summer, so I want cloth, and I don't want the running boards that interfere with off-roading. The Sport Edition is perfect, so they had better offer that again, and with a V8! I haven't heard anything to the contrary, but maybe Cliffy1 can confirm...
  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
I hear ya.' Why can't manufacturers bring back the drop/swing tailgate like on the old station wagons? That would solve the issue of loading without having to lean over the tailgate, while still having the option of a dropping tailgate when you need it. My dad's '96 Roadmaster wagon had that, and that was only 6 years ago! I hope Chrysler gets on the stick with their lift/drop tailgate, forcing other manufacturers to follow suit.

I just visited the dealer today. There were told the dealer demo test drives they set up to compare is still on and will be sometime in late summer.

Buzz is it possible you are just a bit gullable and your "sources" are pulling more than you leg?
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I don't have total production information as of yet, but that way I remember hearing it is that the Limited will only be available in the V8--not that the V8 would only be available in the Limited.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
Your leg pulling is getting old.
  • jamesbass1jamesbass1 Member Posts: 75
I load and unload a ton of photo gear at well over 140 events a year and that tailgate has never bothered me in the least. The idea of the entire huge back lift raising up behind my vehicle bothers me alot. I really like tailgates, period...especially the older 4Runner type with the electric back glass.

Some people think I'm the poster boy for Toyota SUV's the way I rave about them. This is especially so when they see me packing all that gear into the 4Runner. They can't believe their eyes...which of course leads into another rave about the vehicle. Actually, it took me three attempts before I got the packing configuration down pat. So far, I've converted two family members, several friends, and god knows how many innocent bystanders!...now, if I could only decide between spending the bucks on the Cruiser, or sticking with the 4Runner. The great thing is that whatever choice I finally do make I can't go wrong because both are #1 in their class, and that my friends is a comforting thought.
  • kjack100kjack100 Member Posts: 133
I am a fan of the current design. It gets gets you out of the weather loading and unloading or tailgating. If you have long stuff to haul, you can lower the window and hang it out the back.

Thanks for that update. I was concerned that they were only putting the V8 into the Ltd. But with production geared towards the V8 accross the board until the V6 can arrive is good news. I figure they are going to be hot like the Sequoia was for the first 4-5 months.

Thanks for the bouquet :-) I enjoy these two forums the best. I've lurked in some of the others, but I just don't have time to contribute to more than the 4Runner and Sienna/Sienna Problem forums. There are a lot of nice people in both of them. It's also a real learning experience, finding out what does and doesn't interest people.

You must register with Yahoo. Unfortunately, even though I am registered and have a T1 line here at work, I can't get the photos to load. I'll try again this evening.

Hey guys--I've got a problem with my 2000 4Runner. Whenever I go to turn on the A/C, it initially lets out this sour, pungent odor that is so strong it makes me want to hurl my lunch. After several minutes the smell dissipates. However, if I switch off the A/C and just have the fan blowing, the smell returns stronger than ever. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Also, I've noticed that after the A/C has been running, hardly any water, if any, drips from underneath the SUV. Is this normal? I thought all cars drip water after the A/C has been on....I'm taking it in for service but just thought I'd check here first. Thanks in advance!
  • kullenbergkullenberg Member Posts: 283
Check the drain holes for the evaporator, this sounds like a mold problem. Your dealer should have some spray that will clear the smell, after the drain holes are cleared.
  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
I'm actually having the same problems getting them to load, even if I hit refresh a few times, and I'm on a cable modem. I think Yahoo's server is experiencing some technical difficulties. It seems to help if you click on the Automotive Photo Album option at the top to get the different pictures to choose from, but it's sort of hit or miss. Sorry about that guys! Keep checking and hopefully it'll clear up soon.
  • cliffy1cliffy1 Member Posts: 3,581
I think I started the download process at about 1:00 this afternoon. Right now (9:00 PM), I have two pics plus the top third of the thrid. Good thing I have that T1 line eh?
  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
I was going to say the same thing as Kullenberg, probably a mold issue. My wife's car did the same thing a few years ago, and we did what Kullenberg suggests and it cleared up. It's been fine ever since. You definitely need to have them spray it with the mold-killing stuff or it'll come back soon after the next time it rains.

Again, I'm a little confused about how you can prejudge something we can't fully see, and resembles the basic shape of the GX that you like. Very strange... You may be pleasantly surprised when all the black-out is ripped off and we get a decent photo of it. Well, I hope you are, and I hope I am too. The current 4Runner is such a great looking truck and so far, judging by the GX and these spy shots it appears like it's going to be even cooler. Who knows...

Well, it's official I have FINALLY joined the CLUB!!! After two years of looking and pricing I made the big purchase! Or shall I say middle size purchase after the DEAL I got! The price I ended up with was two hundred dollars below invoice plus the cash rebate. I used the Autobytel service to get a few quotes and after that I had six offers I was negotiating on. When it was all said and done my local dealer met the lowest price and I am now a happy owner. With working in the automotive industry I can tell you from personal work experience that you roll the dice when your purchasing a new make-over model. Even if it's a Toyota there'll be bugs to be worked out and then some. I know the new 4Runner will be a good SUV, but with the amount of money that anyone is going to put down (Sticker price for at least 8 months)I would be disappointed with the issues on the new vehicle. I had a Jeep Grand Chek. and I had it into the dealer seven times in three months when it was under warranty. That was my main reason for buying the 4runner. It's a proven SUV in quality and reliability. There isn't a vehicle out there with a record so long. I know it doesn't appeal to everyone, but this baby will last a while!
    - just my opinion
  • intmed99intmed99 Member Posts: 485
I just recently bought myself a 2002 4Runner Limited 4x4 in Golden Pearl. I must say that i am amazed at how good my stereo sounds...i have the 6-disc indash player. (My old car, CRV, had the top aftermarket parts: Diamond Audio Hex speakers, MB Quart coaxials, Xtant amp, etc.) I must say that my 4Runner's stereo sounds pretty darn near my old car's system...in fact, it is a bit more balanced (but less loud). Excellent job Toyota! Strangely, it also sounds better than the JBL system in Highlander.

Again, does ANYONE know the POWER RATING (??watts x4) of the 6-disc in-dash player?? Just for my information/interest. Thanks.
  • bigorange30bigorange30 Member Posts: 1,091
I am entitled to one you know. I didn't say that I wouldn't change my mind so I haven't prejudged it. Surely you have formed SOME opinion based on those pictures. It also doesn't look anything like the GX470.
  • tbcreativetbcreative Member Posts: 357
Of course everyone's entitled to their opinion, it's just a little strange to see one so definitive before seeing the actual vehicle. And yes, I've already formed my opinion and shared it numerous times.

To say that it doesn't look ANYTHING like the GX seems a little extreme. The dimensions are identical and the over-all shape is very similar, especially if you look mainly at the middle picture from this month's Truckin.' I don't know why they wouldn't look similar in shape if they're built on the same platform. It will be the same height, width, and length, so how doesn't it resemble the GX? Now, I'm not talking about design details, because we can't see those yet, but I'm talking about the over-all shape. There's really no point in discussing this until we see it stripped of the black-out materials, but you seem so sure of your opinion when all we've seen is a chunk of black that reveals very little, other than shape and the grill.

I certainly don't want to seem like I'm attacking you, and I figure you may change your mind or you may hate it even more when it's finally revealed, which is fine. I might too when I actually see it. It may really be ugly, but to say that now just doesn't seem fair. Again, if that's your opinion I respect that, but I still don't understand it. If you said the GX was ugly, I'd understand better. But to compare it to the Aztek, even as a joke...?

That just doesn't look like the 4Runner pictures that tbcreative has shown. Can you give me a link to the site that tells the dimensions of the GX470 and the '03 4Runner and that it is built on the same platform?

  • aggiedogaggiedog Member Posts: 238
I can e-mail those three pix in Windows bmp format to anyone who can't seem to view the link. The middle picture, except for being a black SUV, doesn't look quite like the first or the last. The back end looks shorter and (maybe a coincidence) the rims are different too.

could it be that the middle picture is an SR5 and the other two are the limited? The tail lights look the same and so does the overall shape of the vehicle.

I've been on the sidelines for a bit - so long that Edmunds even updated the format. But back now, and hopefully can help to keep filling in the blanks on the 03's. I'll do what I can.
  • sailing216sailing216 Member Posts: 98
Look at the number of spokes on the wheels---the middle pic is a different truck.

My 2 cents--the middle is the 4 runner and the other 2 pics seem bigger vehicles and may be the Japanese Prado which is the future landcruiser. I don't know though, eyes might be playing tricks on me.
