It’s actually simple. Buy and drink what you like!

I just happen to enjoy many different ones.

Yep ... and how you like. Don't listen to the people that say the only way to drink it is neat in a Glencairn. Personal preference.

I might as well get a bottle of the good stuff. It’s likely to last us a very long time. Unless my son and son in law get into it.

Blanton's is tough to get and is allocated and many times will sell above retail.

Similar bourbons to it are Eagle Rare (also allocated), 1792, Buffalo Trace and EH Taylor Small Batch. All are basically the same mash bill, but aged, stored, and produced differently. 1792 is the easiest to find of the bunch.

Some notable bottles (mid-level under $100) that are far easier to find in addition to @corvette solid suggestions -

    Basil Hayden Toast
    Russell's Reserve 10
    Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond
    Knob Creek 12
    Angels Envy
    Woodford Reserve Double-Oaked

There's a place near @kyfdx that has Blanton's regularly. It's called the Prohibition Bar and it's connected to newberrybroscoffee.com

I like your other suggestions.....especially that Basil Hayden Toast.
Toast is my wife's favorite, that and Weller Special Reserve (another one that is like hen's tooth here in NJ)

From what I gather from reading/watching stuff about bourbon, the mania bubble has burst. Stuff that used to be impossible to get is now on shelves and prices are down. Distilleries are even shutting down or for sale. Probably not a bad thing in the long run.

@tjc78 ’s friend has quite the assortment. The only Weller I have is their bottom-line Special Reserve. It’s fine and pleasant enough but it would be nice to try some of the ones on his shelf. In my travels I was able to get some of those that never made it here, like the JDs in the square bottle which are great. Also got Russell’s Reserve and Evan Williams Single Barrel on those trips, along with a Redwood Empire and a Booker’s. Haven’t tried those last two yet. Oddly enough, we had 5 or 6 variants of Basil Hayden here but the ones I tried I didn’t care for so I passed on the others.

Bourbon sounds like a complicated habit.

If you’re unfamiliar, I would suggest an Evan Williams 1783 as a good intro. Their Bottled in Bond variety with the white label is also surprisingly good and a real bargain.

The 1783 is a great budget bottle.

Basil Hayden 10 is so good, the red wine cask & subtle smoke are just OK. The dark rye is a nice change of pace, but I never replaced my bottle.

Penelope makes some really good stuff too. The Wheated is a very good sub for Weller Special Reserve and some of the specialty releases like the Havana are just over the top good.

    @ab348
That picture is nothing compared to the true amount he has. Truly could never drink it all in his lifetime even with a significant amount of help (considering he keeps buying it!)

I figured out the simple solution to picking a good bourbon. I will take my son to the store with me, and ask him what he would really like but can't justify paying the price of.

I just spent more on vacation plans than a few of my cars are worth. We bit the bullet and booked 2 weeks in Japan for June. Family has been talking of going there for years. It always seemed unattainable. But, long story short, I accidentally discovered that Travelocity has a weird “glitch” where a package of flight and hotel is about the same price as flight by itself. Are the airlines paying for the stay? I don’t get it, frankly, but we took advantage of it. Could have done the same time in Kenya for the same price. That is tops of my bucket list, but I was outvoted.

My daughter was in the Peace Corps and she spent 3 years teaching in Namibia 2009-2012. I went over and visited her 3 times. Africa is very varied and kind of magical. We rented a car toured southern Africa each time and I was in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia (and even Zimbabwe for a minute). I would go back any time, but now that I'm older I don't want the looong flights to get there.

I wish we had done more of them along the way instead of saving them for retirement or close to it. End up with a window where you still have the physical ability to do a lot of walking (and deal with long flights). After the kids graduate college is a good time for it!

No family vacation this year, just going to take a week off of work in July and some long weekends to really enjoy our shore place.

I was going to mention something along those lines as well. I see my parents and in-laws in their mid to late 70s have the financial means to travel, but long flights and physical limitations restrict dictate where they can and will go.

I'm so happy that my mother is such a part my kid's lives. She is the only grandparent they have and she makes the most of it.

She took them to our place at the shore yesterday to meet up with some family/kids there until tomorrow. It was a nice change of pace for them and also gave my wife and I a little down time.

@tjc78 WE have the same tastes in Bourbon. I like all the ones you've mentioned.

I'll throw Michters in there (the bourbon, not the rye), too.

Just checking in. Hope everyone had a great Holiday.

No new punch to report. And, after being 65º yesterday, it's supposed to drop 20º today. OH Valley weather....go figure.

I think I mentioned previously that I live on a small cut-de-sac. So, all the residents on the street know each other. Guy who usually buys BMWs, ended up with a Jeep Grand Cherokee in his driveway. Was walking the dog past his house yesterday and I stopped to chat with him as he was in the driveway...burgandy with blacked out trim and wheels. Very fetching.

Sharp vehicle. It had a sticker of $47K. He said he bought it for $36K, which seems like a huge bargain to me.

Started dating someone 30 years my Junior, which is something I never thought I'd do. She's added a different dynamic and certainly an upheavle for my fairly staid life recently. C'est la vie!

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

    I’m jealous of both deals.😆

Just to quickly tie-up the broken garage door problem.
My neighbors house is also 20 years old and his door broke at exactly the same time (I hear 20 years is pretty good).
He did a lot of research and he found a garage door maker and installer to install new doors.
He said the Wayne Dalton motor should be OK for a while.
So, in answer to some inquiries, we will get the doors from the same place as my neighbor, and we'll wait on getting a new opener for now.
