The 92+ Trooper automatic transmission is a GM, but it is still outrageous because it is the GM transmission that is also used in the Cadillac Catera and several BMW sedans, just with different gear ratios.

I am not sure about the 2wd, but I believe the 4wd troopers have bearings that require repacking. I at least paid for it.

Regarding alignment your mechanic is correct. It is hard to get it to drive without a slight pull in either direction.
  • bsmart1bsmart1 Member Posts: 377
I suppose you're right about the 4WD models vs. the 2WD models. I have a 4WD 99' Trooper that I had the front wheel bearings repacked on a few months back. I didn't know if all the newer Troopers (2000+) had sealed bearings both 2WD and 4WD alike. Looks like the answer is 2WD only are the sealed version.

Just saw today that the small chip in my 2002 Trooper windshield has spread across the whole thing. I guess the cold weather did it. So , how much will this cost me????
  • silverghostsilverghost Member Posts: 154
I got a replacement for my '01 a couple of months ago for $200. Of course, the new one now has a chip in it also!

You may remember me posting on this site often a few years back with my praise of my loyal Trooper. Sold her (96 PEP) 1.5 years ago with 125k on her. Traded in for a Honda Pilot.

Well after a winter with some "extreme" weather of the California style, my wife had the following comment on the Pilot:

"....you know the Trooper was a better car in more than one way...".

So how do you folks like that!

The Honda is quieter, the ride is softer, the automatic is very slick, and the V6 has more power, the third row moves more people, the mileage is better, the DVD player pleases the kids.

The Trooper was debateably made with better materials and was much more content in the wet and snow. I will consider us lucky if it goes 125k with as little effort as the Trooper.

I will be very suprised if I miss it when it is replaced. I miss my Trooper. When I see Troopers drive by I think "they are lucky"!

    Troop on!

Christmas Eve - died on the way up a hill, stuck in 1st, so had it towed to my local tranny shop. This is the third '99 Trooper he has done in the last month - complete rebuild.

I'm a bit bummed about this - I have kept up on the maintenance and even had the tranny serviced twice (30k and 60k). I guess from what I'm readin that while the rest of the vehicle is pretty good, these trannys are the weak link.

$3,000 later I am going to see if I can get another 50-60k out of the truck without any other failures. Disappointed though! (and out of warranty)

I think at some point there is going to be a class action lawsuit with all the trooper tranny problems I have heard about recently.
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
    Was that an automatic tranny?

    ..

Just curious since all three of my Troopers have been manual transmission, and I'd like to know if this applies to my current 2001 Trooper 5 speed.
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
I was suprized to find out today that the big variance in weight in close sizes:

    ..

    Michelin LTX M/S

    LT265/75R16 112LRC = 46 lbs.

    P265/75R16 114S = 39 lbs.

    P265/70R16 111S = 38 lbs.

    ..

    Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO:

    LT265/75R16 112LRC = 48 lbs.

    P265/75R16 114S = 45 lbs.

    P265/70R16 111S = 41 lbs.

    ..

The Discount Tire guy Howard told me that the LT tires have 6 ply vs the P tires are 4 ply sidewalls. Touching the sidewalls and flexing them by hand side by side today the sidewalls did not feel all that different between 4 ply and 6 ply. The other difference Howard told me about was the LT tires have heavier gauge wire used in the steel belts in the tread, if you drive every day to job sites with nails the LT would be much more puncture resistant.

    ..

To me tire weight is proportional to MPG and it will be hard for me to go with LT tires after knowing these weights.

    ..

Now P265/75R16 LTX M/S is looking very attractive. I would get the look of the bigger tire with much less of a MPG hit, and the LTX supposedly stay quiet all through their tread life.

    ..

Or just get the P265/70 to save the most MPG and keep more acceleration, and not have to worry about the speedo being off by much. Hmmm...
  • hydrodynamichydrodynamic Member Posts: 2
Yes - it was an automatic tranny. Kicking myself now for not getting the manual. I wanted to initially, but couldn't get the other features on the trooper if I went manual. In retrospect I should have gone stick and then just added the other features (CD changer, etc etc) after-market.

No more auto trannies if I can help it.
  • bsmart1bsmart1 Member Posts: 377
is escalating lately. As these vehicles age and miles pile up, you expect things to happen, you just hate it when it's such an expensive item to repair. I just had the same issue with my 88' and decided to let the vehicle go. If it were my 99' I'd fix it just like you have and drive it another 75K miles. The truck has too much residual value in it to write it off. The fix is about 1 years payments on a NEW vehicle and it'll take a lot longer than that to put 75K more miles on the truck.

For everyone's info- I traded my 92 4wd automatic Trooper in on a Pilot July of 03. It had 96 thousand and my mechanic friend refused to do any work on it. It exhibited a few quirks and was showing some rust, but I never replaced any major components- still had the original rotors. It served us well!
  • cobbocobbo Member Posts: 34
FWIW, since there's been all of the discussion about transmissions lately, I had to replace the transmission on my 2001 LTD 4WD in November at 87,792 miles. In any event I look forward to several thousand more miles before I consider a successor....

What the heck is going to happen to veryone when Isuzu leaves the US at the end of 2005? When they leave who is going to honor the warranty? Or are we just SOL? My tranny is shot at 30k and based on how this thing runs I don't want to own it with no warranty. Anyone know if they legaly have to find someone to honor remaining warranties?

  • silverghostsilverghost Member Posts: 154
My uneducated guess . . . we're SOL! However, considering the rumors that ZOO will re-enter the North American market in the '06 model year, it would behoove them to keep some infrastructure in place to fulfill waranty obligations on our now defunct Troopers.

I'm looking at a possible transmission replacement at 47K, and I know Isuzu will buy that for me. As for long term warranty coverage, it's anybody's guess who might provide that.

I read not long ago that ZOO had approached GM about re-investing in the company. Scary as that may seem, an association of that sort might protect current owners' warranties.
  • badisuzubadisuzu Member Posts: 4
I smell class action lawsuit.. If they sold vehicles with a warranty they knew they wouldn't be around to honor???? sounds like fraud to me.........
  • silverghostsilverghost Member Posts: 154
Good luck . . . been there, done that. The reality is, the fat lady hasn't sung quite yet.
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
Isuzu is a strong company overall, just having trouble with SUVs at the moment. Bad relations with its existing customers would make the news and hurt Isuzu world wide. So they do have good reason to honor your warrantee work.

    ..

Think on the bright side, it might be possible for many more shops to do Isuzu warrantee items for a while till Isuzu makes its USA come back with direct injection engines in sporty cars and fuel efficient diesels and diesels haybrids in SUVs etc...

    ..

I have driven owned Isuzu Troopers from 1994 to present. Put nearly 400K combined miles on the three of them. My Troopers have have never left me stranded. But I have done a few odd things such as change a frozen fuel filter in a busy intersection at sixteen below zero, 5 minuted and really really cold hands! I was 4wheeling with a feminist activist girlfriend once and tore up a tire, she insisted on changing for me, so I just loosened and tightenned the bolts and lifted the spare into place for her. With my first Trooper I bought the shop manual, it was not needed except for valve lifter adjustments, the next two Troopers I did not get the manual, no much need to work on Troopers, they so reliable. I understand that if I ever did need to work on the Trooper for major things the parts are very expensive, but still cheap compared with some other imports. I like the idea of being a little diferent, so hard to get parts that I seldom if ever need is a small price to pay.

    ..

Our Troopers are classics that will be driven by someone even of mostly off road for many years to come even if Isuzu does not make a timely return to the USA.
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
I had the honor of driving all over the place today with a fresh coat of hard packed snow that was polished shiny by traffic. I waited for a car to give up trying to drive up a hill near home, then drove up without any trouble while the pickup truck following me stayed below to steep part until I was out of sight.

    ..

Next to rescue my children from a failed school bus system. I stayed on the lesser travelled roads, the ones with the steep hills and ice. It is easier to pass hundreds of cars, vans, and a school bus in the ditches than to wait patiently behind hoards of cars going bumper to bumper.

    ..

So tonight I am again very impressed by the REVO tires, which are down to only 3/32nds tread depth. I was all set to try the LTX M/S this time around lured by the promise of 80K miles, but after today's performance, getting only 50K with REVOs seems worth it.

    Question.....

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I just got a 90K mile tuneup done at 97,800 miles, had new front and rear brakes, timing belt, water pump and tensioner replaced as well at 97,800 mile. 5 thousand miles and $1,500 later at 102,500 my transmission dies. It's going to take $4000 to replace since I have no warranty intact as a 2nd buyer. What should I do? Try to trade in the car as is to purchase a new vehicle (not Isuzu) or hope that after putting $4K into the car, no major damage will be anticipated. I was hoping to drive this car for at least another 60,000 miles. At this point, being unfamiliar with any other common isuzu related repairs, I'm lost as to what I should do. Any thoughts from other owners? By the way, I have a 2000 Trooper. Again, no warranty, just a lot of grief! Are there any other parts that are not japanese in the troopers???

I started hearing a slight tapping noise in the motor of my 02 trooper recently. With 59,000 miles gone on the 60,000 mile power train warranty(2nd owner)I was very anxious to have the dealer mechanic listen to it. believe it or not the noise actually occurred when I had the mechanic listen to it. He could not get to the repair right away so he left the service order open so the mileage would not be a factor when I brought the car back in to have the work done. Much to my surprise when I returned (with 62,400 miles) the mechanic told me he had approval from Isuzu to replace the engine with a new factory replacement and it would arrive in one week. This is all from a dealer I've never done business with before. Needless to say, this is the opposite of what I expected after some of the horror stories I've heard about Isuzu dealers and service departments. Sorry about the long post but I wanted to say a good word about the service dept @ University Ford/Isuzu in durham NC. I'll post later, after the engine swap is done, and report on the outcome.

What replacement vehicle could you get for your broken Trooper traded in plus $4000 that you would be happy to drive 60,000 more miles?
  • dnestrdnestr Member Posts: 188
Hey boxtrooper, you may remember my post on this site where I stated a problem with shifting into first gear on my diesel Trooper/mt. So it has been working fine since I replaced oil in the tranny. You can fill even dr.pepper there and nothing will happen with it once my mechanic said ;) Good on ya mate
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
your recent $1500 maintenance has me thinking you should pay for the new tranny. once tranny's fixed, your 2000 Trooper with 102k miles SHOULD have another 100k relatively trouble-free miles ahead of it.
  • skimskim Member Posts: 2
Reading from the posts, it sounds like the tranny is the only major repair that most people are complaining about. My concern is that I put another $4k into the car and in a few months some other major repair is necessary. I know it's basically a risk to take but has anyone else experienced other Major repair work for Troopers? Also, is it worth trying to get it rebuilt as opposed to getting the entire transmission replaced? One con I can think of is that if the tranny is rebuilt, another part that might go sour if that was not replaced, resulting in getting the transmissioni rebuilt. Anyway, all thoughts are greatly appreciated.
  • cobbocobbo Member Posts: 34
Well Skim, while I'd definitely say the transmission replacement was the biggie, in the past 90k miles, I've had the starter replaced twice, the PCV valve replaced twice, the accelerator sensor replaced twice, the CD changer replaced twice and one new serpentine belt pulley (and belt) all luckily covered by warranty or extended warranty with no additional $ from me. This, of course, is not to mention an additional serpentine belt replacement, two new sets of tires along the way, a new battery, new brakes and all of the regulary scheduled services and assorted mishaps along the way, so while there might be a twist or two ahead of you on the road, all in all anything else that pops up should pale in comparison to the tranny replacement. All in all, I'd echo Boxtrooper's sentiments - what other vehicle do you have as an option to get you the next 60k miles at the same price of the trade-in value on your Troop & the additional 4k?

I had binding with the TOD system last summer right before my warranty expired. After replacing some electronic components that they said were bad and it didn't fix the problem...The dealer added "lubricant" and told me it was fine.

It was fine until yesterday when the problem re-appeared? Out of the blue and just in time for a huge snowstorm. I think the 4wd system will work...just not on dry pavement? I am afraid of having the transfer case blow if I use TOD?

Anyway...I called, they said that they would see if it was the same problem as this summer...and would try to get Isuzu to repair/replace the transfer case under warranty. They told me last summer that replacing the transfer case would cause more problems than fixing it? So they said to see how their "fix" held up, and that they would keep my file open in case it came back.

Now I am 6 months out of warranty with a bad transfer case...it is probably the electromagnetic clutch inside, either way I think I am SOL.

This will be a good test to see how Isuzu is going to manage warranty issues going forward as related to above posts.
  • silverghostsilverghost Member Posts: 154
I feel your pain. I visited the dealer over a year ago about a very squeaky brake pedal. I was told at the time that it was the brake light switch, and that their replacement switches eventually developed the same problem.

During the past month, I went back to the dealer with an unrelated issue. I mentioned the brake pedal problem to the tech, who quickly told me it was the brake booster, not the switch. He also said that a new booster has permanently fixed the problem each time they installed a replacement.

The service rep said he tried to get Isuzu to replace the booster, but they refused because I am now outside the 3/50 bumper to bumper warranty. Didn't matter that I had previously complained to them of the same problem while under warranty, that my file at the dealer referenced that complaint, nor that I was given wrong advice at that time by the same service rep.

I'm still chapped about that, but I am not gonna pay $440 for a new brake booster! I haven't spoken with a Regional Rep, yet, but that may be the next step.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Well, even with the TOD problem the truck still manages to be snowcat. I was plowing through over a foot of snow with little or no issues. The TOD seems to be engaging, and since the roads are all covered in snow the binding doesn't seem to be an issue. I did cruise around yesterday in 4 low which was a little better through snow banks, but didn't seem to make much difference for getting around.

The TOD lights are not registering as much as I would think with the rears spinning. I know the fronts are getting power, but maybe not as quickly or constant? Or it is just the lights?

I am going to get an undercarraige wash as soon as it clears up...maybe that will help the overall TOD problem...perhaps something is just frozen?

The Bridgestone Dueler A/Ts are great in the snow. Far better than the stock. I was beginning to notice a little slippage with rain, so I started to wonder if they were worth the upgrade...the snow performance was excellent.
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
Driver's window has detached from the power motor mechanism. Anybody with a shop manual who can scan/email me pictures of how to disassemble the door panel and make this fix?

I am mad at myself for trying to get the window to operate after truck sat outside in snow/10 deg F temps for a week. It was clearly frozen, and I should have waited until the truck warmed up in the garage or something. Same thing happened on our 1996 Trooper, but that one was warranty covered. I'm way past warranty with the '98 now.

I just heard over the radio that my ISUZU dealer is closing its doors! After 100 years they are calling it quits. Well, maybe not that long, but now I don't think I'll have a dealership in my State for maintenance issues. That pretty much makes the 10 year 100K mile warranty worthless, now doesn't it! It came as a surprise, but wait, I can hurry down there and pick up a leftover Axiom for nearly nothing. They are practically giving em' away. Oh yeah, but where would I take it to get it worked on??
  • sevysevy Member Posts: 1
I went to use my TOD hit the button and "CHECK" started flashing. This is the first time I have seen this warning, it never did go into 4WD. I was wondering if there is any technique that I may use to try and get it engaged or shoud I just suck it up and go to a dealer?

By the way, I have 135K on my tranny and still working ok - 2001 Trooper.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
You can try disconnecting the battery. Getting an undercarraige car wash if you think there is snow frozen all over the underside of the truck.

4 Low should still work...you just cannot drive it on dry pavement.

Cant we take our Isuzus to any ASE certified shop for warranty work?
  • makayemakaye Member Posts: 81
I would wager that a local GM dealer will take over warranty work.

If you contact Isuzu or go to isuzu.com and use their dealer locator, that may provide current info. I go to a local GM dealer for warranty work as there is no true Isuzu dealer available.

I just fit 285/75/16s under my otherwise completely stock 1998 Trooper S model. Thought I'd share. I think this is the biggest size I have heard of on this board without any suspension modifications. The guys at discount tire called me and sounded amazed when they said there was no rubbing from lock to lock and with a little testing of the travel as well. Amazing. They said a Chevy 4x4 truck can't handle this size without rubbing. I hope my tranny can handle the added weight, given all the recent posts about failures.

I think we all will be out of luck for warranty work (I'm the orig. owner of a 2002 Trooper). If makaye is really getting free warranty work done by a GM dealer, he should count his blessings because I don't see how his dealer is getting paid by Isuzu to do the work.

All you guys who think GM will do the right thing if Isuzu pulls out are also dreaming. Remember a company called Daewoo that used to sell crappy little Korean cars? After they had lost enough money here they pulled out of the U.S. and stranded all their owners. Can you guess which giant corporation with the initials G.M. owned a large part of Daewoo? Once the U.S. arm of Daewoo was bankrupt, GM bought even a larger percentage of the parent company in Korea, with no obligation to the U.S. owners, at what was surely a fire-sale price. And do you know who is now selling re-badged Daewoos in the U.S.? That's right: Chevrolet! (and Suzuki). I'm surprised Suzuki doesn't have more pride. Oh, yeah, GM has them by the wallet, also. Here's a link if you don't believe it: http://www2.ctcentral.com/ctcars/fullstory.asp?ID=12202003M797

I never said "if" Isuzu leaves. "If" they leave, I imagine no warranty work at all. Worthless warranty. SOL. Isuzu is not GM, nor are they altruistic. At present, with Isuzu STILL in the US - they ARE providing warranty work. Mine is just through the local GM dealer, who is an ex Isuzu dealer.

This may be interesting too. ALthough the MU-07 Sport Ute is a goner (no surprise), Isuzu did announce they are finally bringing their (Colorado clone) pickup truck to market.

Without Isuzu diesels or direct injection gasoline engines in the vehicles it sells, there is no particular reason to buy an Isuzu. So I am very sad that Isuzu will be selling the pickup it desigend for GM with the GM engines in it.

    ..

I would like Isuzu to sell all the GM models with Isuzu diesels in them:

Isuzu diesel GM minivan 25/40 MPG City/Hwy

Isuzu diesel GM SUV 25/30 MPG

Isuzu diesel SAAB GM Malibu 32/48 MPG

Isuzu diesel GM Colorado small pickup 26/31 MPG

Isuzu diesel Gm 2.8L full size pickup 24/29 MPG

    etc..

The Isuzu versions would have the better interior controls more like Toyota and Honda than GM, and prabably fewer bells and whistles and a lower price even with the diesel.

    ..

GM could use the Isuzu sold units as part of its overall fleet MPG emissions numbers to help keep the government regulators off their backs.

The 2 plastic clips attached to the bottom of my power window broke off. I just bought a new window regulator thinking the clips were components of the regulator...they are not. Does anyone know where these clips can be purchased and/or the part number? Thought I was saving considerable money over the $500+ the dealer wanted to charge me, but I cannot do much without the clips. Thank You!
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
If they are still in business...and mention that you got them off an isuzu forum for the 10% discount.
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
Well the dealer says they cannot find anything wrong. The system is binding like a real 4wd high.

I tried to explain to them that the clutch is a mechanical component and that the computer may not tell them it is not working properly. After the service rep told me "that is how 4wd is supposed to work" and "other troopers drive like yours"...I asked him if he drove it.

Short answer..."No". I need a new transfer case...they should have replaced it last summer under warranty, now they are balking.

So much for this. I am either...going to have to live with not having 4wd for wet/slippery conditions or shell out some serious $$ to get it fixed. Isuzu is not paying for this one, and the dealer is flat out refusing to even acknowledge a problem.

Now I have to drive 45 minutes, family in tow, to demonstrate this problem to them...for which they tell me is normal.

BTW the mechanics tested it against another truck and said it was normal. When I asked what year...they said 96. I am fairly upset at this point.
  • dnestrdnestr Member Posts: 188
Has a 96 MY had TOD transfer case? As far as I remember even a Japanese Bighorn got it in 97 first. Seems like the mechanics faked a little ;)
  • sbcookesbcooke Member Posts: 2,297
First US TOD was in 1999.

The rep drove it Friday and they are going to keep it until Monday when their Isuzu tech is in.

I think the short of it is that they know Isuzu won't give them any cash for something to be fixed under warranty and they are doing everything they can to get out.

Has anyone had a sunroof (or moonroof) installed on their Trooper? Almost have my 2000 paid off and would like to have a hole in the roof! Searching the internet results in options, but if you have any beefs with a certain brand, I'd like to see them.

Other car is a convertible. Can't help myself!
  • boxtrooperboxtrooper Member Posts: 843
Put holes all over the roof like that new Nissan minivan or like the very old VW minivan or like the Olds Custom Cruiser of the 60's.
  • dnestrdnestr Member Posts: 188
As a Trooper has quite bad aerodynamics because of its ‘box’ styled body, the air noise is too noticeable when it drives at even normal speeds. I never left the orig. sunroof to be open on my ‘99 LTD if I drove it faster than 30 km/h (approx. 20 m/h).. just might add I loved that huge sunroof that gave me a sense to feel as I am in a convertible. Take care if you decide to drill those holes ;)

a intermitten buzz, that sounds like a radio transmission signal, coming out from under the driver seat area of your Troopers?? I first heard it a couple months ago when the weather was really COLD in Colorado. I thought it might be temperature related, but I've been hearing it more often lately in all kinds of temperatures and conditions. Any ideas??
  • dnestrdnestr Member Posts: 188
who knows.. could be shaky fastenings of left front speaker inside door plastic panel because of cold weather. im sure nothing serious with it. leave it so and see what will happen when spring comes. though wait.. are you sure your wife doesn’t bug you? ;)
