Recently my new Honda Accord EX (three months) was hit behind by a Raider truck while I was stoped for red light. As per my insurance agent's recommendation I moved it to a body shop in Alexandria, VA. I am not so sure of that body shop's work. Repairs were estimated at around $10,000.
Can any one suggest best, reliable body shop in DC/Northern Virginia/Maryland?
I have had nothing but good experiences with Zandee's on Burton. They are very honest and have provided options (of various price) to fix problems. They have also been very good about prioritizing repair needs, and don't use pushy sales tactics to scare you into a repair. As an added benefit, my wife has been very satisfied that they don't treat her poorly because she is female, like other repair facilities have. Zandee's is an A+ operation!
If you have a Japanese car in the Columbia area I can highly recommend Won's Auto repair. He does good work, does not overcharge or make unnecessary repairs. Look him up in the phone book, he moved and I traded my Nissan in for an Olds. He is still around, I wish he worked on domestics.
I highly recommend Dan's Auto Repair in Merriam, KS. these guys work on virtually everything including local tv stations fleet of vehicles. anything from oil changes to complete rebuilds. these guys do a great job and stand behind their work! also they own their own tow truck for customer vehicle tow ins.
Dear friends: I just moved to Nashville, TN and am looking for a price-reasonable and competent shop for my Toyota 91 Camry for routine maintenance and repairs. Any recommendations out there?
Currently I live in Ft Worth, have a Porsche. Autobahn did nice work on a 30k service and some brake work. I have also dealt with Istook's - specializes in performance mods, and the proprietor also gave me some high perf driving lessons (former pro racer)
I will be moving to Dallas soon. Any shops to seek out or avoid?
California Nissan Service in Alhambra, CA has taken good care of my 87 Maxima and my wifes 91 240ZX in the 9 years I've been going there. The owner is a former tech from a Nissan dealer. They also service other Japanese cars. He insists on using ONLY genuine Nissan parts, so it can be a little more expensive, but I do not worry about the quality of the parts going on the cars. I almost want to stick with Nissan for all my future car purchases just so I know he can work on them. He also referred me to a great body shop that did a wonderful job matching my factory pewter metallic finish!
A repair shop in Minneapolis recently charged me 3.6 hours labor at $75/hr to replace the outer boots on my Nissan Sentra (parts not included). I thought that was an excessive amount of time for an experienced mechanic to do that job. Is there any way a poor customer can verify that he is not being overcharged. I believe in "a fair days pay for a fair days work" and consequently don't mind paying if the charges are fair but don't like to be ripped off.
I can recommend "M&M Audi House" in Campbell. They have fixed my 1993 car a few times, and it sure beat the dealer's price. These cars are expensive to maintain in general, so having a good independent shop will help as they get older ...
I am used to receiving a repair estimate and see mechanics using a book of time tables for the basis for the estimate. Ask another shop for an estimate and ask how they estimate the time and what the time factor is.
P.T.L. auto and tire in Birmingham, AL on Huffman road in the centerpoint/roebuck area of town. Great guys, the owner and his wife are usually around and the mechanics do a good job. Work on both foreign and domestic, and perhaps the best part is they stand behind their work no questions asked. The PTL stands for praise the lord (I do live in Alabama) so you would hope they are honest.
I'm looking for a top notch Toyota and/or Honda repair shop with experienced mechanics.I've read it is difficult to find shops with updated info since the factories guard that data. Is this true?
I'm currently looking for a good reputation shop with reasonable or fair price to do 30,000 miles service for my 97 Camry in Bellevue or Lynnwood area, Washington State. Does anybody has such information? Thanks!
I have been quite happy with Art's Automotive (San Pablo Ave near Ashby). Unfortunately they only work on Honda, Toyota, and Nissan as I recall. Fine for my Acura, but when the Subaru comes in.... :-)
District Line Auto is pretty good. The owner is a family friend but objectively they know how to fix cars. A while ago had an old 86 Chevy Cavalier that wouldn't start in the winter. Had the pretty much everything replaced after going to three dealers and a couple of other independents. Nada. The car still wouldn't start. We took it to District Line and they had it fixed in a couple of days and we had no problems with that car since. They're located on Georgia Avenue at the D.C. MD border
I used Mark's Trackside Auto Service in Princeton Junction. They've been great over the three years I've taken our cars there. Last time I went, they had pre-authorization to do $500 worth of work on my car, which they could have done, but they discovered another three engine problems that would have brought the total to over $2000. So they called me first, and advised me to trade it in unless I planned to keep it for at least two more years. It had 136,000 miles, so I traded it.
I have a 1995 Mazda 626 Lx. Its about 70,000 miles old now and i guess its time i change the timing belt. Anybody knows a reliable repair shop in the san fracisco, daly city area ?
Does anyone know of a good mechanic/auto shop that services Subarus (only Subarus, preferably)in any of these area? - San Diego, Berkeley/Oakland/San Francisco, and Seattle? Thank you.
Everytime I've been to see these guys they are great. They have never screwed me around and I've been going there for three years now. Their Specialty is Subaru's but they do work on any car here's a link to their site http://www.allmakes.ab.ca/
I will be moving to New Orleans next month and I would like to have recommendations for an independent mechanic who works on MBenz and who is competent and honest. What is NO Benz owners' experience with the MB dealer there? Many thanks. I have a 94 E320.
I hope somebody around here has a suggestion for you. You might also want to look at cartalk.com - they have a section there for "Best Mechanic in Town" or something like that.
Good luck with your move.

Rolf's in Evanston, Il. Specializes in Honda, Toyota, and German cars. Very honest, reliable. Will only do what is needed when it is needed. Pricing is less than dealers.
Can anybody recommend a independent honest Honda shop in the Northern New Jersey area. I'm interested also in a honest Honda dealer for the same area (north-central New Jersey.)
We owned a VW Cabriolet and we have been looking around for a good mechanic within this area. So far I have been so several shops but we felt that they did a very bad job on our vehicle. The following were the shops that we visited and presented a very poor quality job.
1. PIMMIT Mobil Station - They were very slow on getting the job done. It usually takes them about 1 week to do an oil change. Also, they leave the car UNLOCK even at night. Another thing is that they leave filthy grease inside your car. Also, they proceed on working on the car without calling you for a price. Expensive and slow.
2. CRAVEN Tire - This shop is within the Tyson's area. They did a good job on the beginning part but failed in the tail end. They provided services like to and from the metro pick-up service but the service was bad. They again did the oil change - used a different oil -, they said that they did a sort of check on all of the parts but failed to even recognized that one of our lights were not working.
3. Stohlman Auto Dealer: Again, this is the one at Tysons corner. They are a VW dealer but failed in putting the right oil!! Expensive and slow. Does not return phone calls and the service managers are not very friendly.
4. Merchants in Tysons: Very slow. Expensive. Might as well have the dealer repair your car. Especially on the oil change. It takes them 4 days to do an emission test. I asked for them to install the engine mount but they did not do anything about it. Although, I did feel ok when they inspected the tires. They seem to know what they were doing on the tires. But overall, they still failed the service portion because they were slow, never repaired the engine mounts (never called for an estimate), and do not provide rides to the metro. Also, they do not have features that would help their other merchant shops.
Stay tuned for my other surveys on bad mechanics shops around the Falls church area.
Does anyone have any good recommendations for DC area shops? It seems that this area has a definite lack of good, honest mechanics that work for reasonable amounts of money. If there are good ones out there, their customers must be keeping quiet for fear of losing them.
HELP! Who knows of a competent (manual) gearbox mechanic in the Portland, Oregon area? Shop, moonlighter, whatever. Please respond (both pro and con). Thanks
Well, this time, I'm using a HONDA ACCORD 2000 to check on good maintenance shops. I found a good shop that meets my qualification. ROSENTAL HONDA @ TYSON provided good service in a quick and professional manner. In fact, I explained the things I wanted to be done in the car. Well, they did it on time. So try it.
If you are near Rockville, try "Motorwerks". It is an independant Honda-only shop with exceptional quality. Not cheap, but the work is always done right.
in Montgomery County, MD,in Ashton, is an old fashioned gas station garage by the name of Kimballs. It's off the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue and Rt. 108...
They've managed to keep an '81 CJ7 running after everyone else said to let it RIP ;-)
If you are looking for a great mechanic in south jersey (gloucester county, about 10 miles from philly), i heartily recommend bob's garage, in sewell (on Delsea Drive, just off Route 55) .. Bob's a real straight-shooter who won't do any more work than your car really needs, at very reasonable rates. I've been going to him for eight years and have two cars with over 100K miles on them that he keeps running very well. He gets booked up for weeks in advance, so you need to plan ahead with him.. He has about six mechanics, most of whom have been with him for years (one is his grown son, Bobby)// you can trust these guys.. i've been burned other places; that's how i wound up here. One caveat: He is a bit of a wit; he'll probly pull your leg at one time or another.
Specifically, can anybody recommend a shop that would be knowledgeable in servicing an Isuzu Trooper? I'm also trying to identify a shop that specializes in Saabs or is at least an excellent European-specialist shop.

Good work. Reasonable rates.
Honest and competent.
Never had to take the car back a week later for more repairs.
