I was wondering if it'd been taken down because of war chat.

100 posts since Thursday? From the looks of it I'd say I picked an ok time to be AWOL. ;-)
Speaking of chores, Sandy really came in handy this weekend. I replaced that ceiling over the front porch that had collapsed. It was about 32'x5', a little smaller than my original guesstimate.
Off to Home Depot for 5 sheets of 3/8" OSB plywood, 4'x8'. How to get it home? Hmm, that roof rack can hold 150 lbs. Let's go for it.
One sheet was cut up and I layed it inside over the front passenger seat. I had that seat forward and reclined. You can easily fit the 8' inside with the hatch closed, too.
The other 4 sheets went up on the roof - no problem! They helped me tie it to the roof with a roll of plastic instead of rope, it was funny. The plastic made buffeting sounds while I drove, but the plywood was secure and made it home no problem.
I'd actually thought that the 2 sections of 6'x8' fence were heavier and a bigger challenge. I hauled those a year or two ago.
Any how, love that roof rack!

PS The patio ceiling looks muuuuch better, I just gotta figure some way to add texture to it to hide the seams. Suggestions?
I'm not sure about what type of texture to use. Right now I basically have plywood nailed and screwed onto the studs in the ceiling. I did a fair job but there are some 1/8" gaps here and there, and the screws stand out.
It's outside and exposed to moisture, so I need something to cover it up. Either some type of mud or a vinyl cover of some sort? Then I figure I'll vent it so the shingles above don't bake.
Where was that web site brought up when Ken asked about his house?

Very helpfull folks.
bit
You can putty the gaps shut, and then texture the whole bit and paint over the texture to protect if from the elements, or you can clad it with a vinyl or MDF siding material. The latter should also be painted, as it will disintegrate if it get's wet.
Plywood under MDF goes a long way towards keeping the MDF from warping. Our house is constructed with plywood under MDF siding - makes a huge difference.
Hope this helps,
-brianV
And as a useless 20/20 hindsight suggestion, I might have used texture-111 type of plywood that has a faux-siding look to it. The only donwside is that it's tough to paint.
So, I vote for soffit!
Craig
I might go with the vinyl if only to avoid painting. Do they come in tiles?

You can get solid soffit, or vented, which has small slots punched in it (not see through). Most people alternate -- a few sheets of solid, one vented. If you wanted to keep moisture from getting trapped, you could go full vented or partial vented.
As far as the look -- well if it's up under a ceiling, I think it would be fine. We have butter-colored dutch lap siding, and white vinyl soffit under our porch, and they look fine together.
Here's some info: http://www.alcoahomes.com/soffit.html

Hmmm, maybe I'll choose a name with a "K" in it.
Greg
Greg: actually, the name is "Dave" but it's already taken by 65% of Crew members' houses.

Since the wood soffit is in good shape (as is the wood siding), I'll probably just cut holes in the soffit and put a soffit vent in place. At this point, I would figure maybe 3 vents per side (ranch house), but I'll probably have to read up on soffit venting a bit more (just guestimating right now). Then, I get to do some painting - all the outside.

Greg: Santa Clara? Let me know when you're in town -- that's my neck of the woods. Kate500 is also nearby.

Anyone here know much about flashing (the kind around chimneys, that is ;-) ). Our roofer noticed the flashing around the chimney looked like it was the original and suggested we change it (about $600). The previous owner apparently re-did the roof a few years ago, but kept the original flashing. No dampness around the chimney, however.
How much of a gamble if I wait a little longer?
Ken
Ken: I vote new flashing to go with new roof. You'd hate to find a leak later & have to peel back the roof to replace the flashing. Of course, I can say that, since I'm playing fast & loose with somebody else's money.
Cheers!

They are working on my "chat" connection. Funny thing - after I posted on Thursday, I couldn't post again. It seems our server thought I was going to Ed moan ds, and wouldn't allow me to access. Seems that kink is worked out.
Well, back to reading. I'm so glad to see everyone is still here and all is pretty much well. Thanks for all of your kind words. They helped a lot. I'm hoping to be back full time really soon.
I'll be posting more now that I caught up on the reading!

(btw, can you help us out with 'direct-control' on the Forester XT automatic?)
I'm feeling a lot better. It could take another 8 months to heal according to the Dr., but I've had enough of the stay at home routine. As long as I behave, I'll be fine. No 5-speeds though. I have to go with an automatic for a bit. I'm driving a lovely GT Sedan right now. I have to admit it is easier!
Let the product suggestions role in!! Hey, do you think we could make this easier by setting up a new board? Maybe "Future Subaru Suggestions"?
Chat with you soon!
Patti
Perhaps there's an automatic Forester turbo in your future. ;-)

Cheers Pat.
This guy has learned to play guitar with his feet, and not just play he is excellent, as well as chording he was also picking I could not believe what I was seeing.
Boy how to overcome adversity.
Cheers Pat.

Thanks for the smiles everyone! FYI - pricing and other interesting tidbits on the STI version of the WRX should be available towards the end of the month. I'll share what I can, the moment I'm given the okay.
Patti
"Future Subaru Suggestions"?
Not a bad idea! This would help separate future model "news" (the current topic) from future model "needs & desires." It would certainly make your task much easier in terms of gathering info to pass on to product planning. I'm all for anything that will make future Subies better, and this sounds like a good start. Karen, what do you think?
Bob
Cheers Pat.
Ken: I'd replace that flashing. Just the minor damage my house suffered was estimated at $835. $600 is less and you can rest assured.
Glad to see you're back Patti. I was trying to fill in for you but that's like putting a finger to stop a leak in the Hoover Dam!
Yes, Patti, please ask if Direct Control = Shiftronic in some way.
Also, Forester XT pricing? Baja Turbo prices? :-)

I'm totally salivating over Forester XT... any word on pricing? will it run on Premium or Regular (kinda important now, with gas prices in Bay Area over $2.00/gal)?
