Being posted as I write this. ImageStation has been annoyingly slow, sorry.

I may use my Comcast account to host web images from now one. Ugh. I'm kind of half way tho...

Here are the cool WIPER NOZZLES, check out how they are hidden in the cowl, not on the hood. Cleaner design looks good to me:

Hee hee, I think some of you are seeing those pics before *I* do, LOL. Seriously.

This shows the wagon's rear seats folded, almost flat but without having the fold the seat base at all:

Note new logo. Get used to it, that's it. Blue background and all.

Momo logo only on GT, but honestly the 2.5i's wheel looks almost the same to me.

    Logo close up (blurry):

Those look similar to the Potenza RE-750 tires I put on my WRX. Perhaps Bridgestone is putting that rim protector "bead" on the RE-92 now. It is a real good idea.

Anybody notice that those rims don't have a rolled edge? That means no clip-on weights, but rather, stick-on weights behind the spokes.

225/55x17 fits on the new Outback eh? Fairly high profile for a 17 incher...

Forester XT or Legacy GT... That is the question!

Check out the cup holders, they should hold some mugs. You can cover it too, it slides forward.

The heated seats each have 4 settings, nice.

The brake handle cover is leather IIRC, either way it looks cool.

Are those mudflaps on the front side wheel well of the rear wheels?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
There is the 2nd power supply. 1st is on the dash. We did not see a 3rd in the cargo area, but Outback might get it, who knows.

Look at them beautiful side bolsters for cornering! Check out the perforated leather, too. That's the GT BTW.

No Dave, it's a little lip on the front edge of the rear wheel well. No mud flaps.

No MP3 inputs, though, but looks nice. Finish around it looks better than a lot of the painted silver stuff I've seen on other cars.

There is your 2nd power outlet.

    Prop rod, no struts here.

Engine cover looks nice. Intercooler is nicely framed, square in shape. Unique to the GT.

    Packaging is tight!

I love it. Best of both worlds. Big deflector built in, plus huge opening serves front and rear seats. Not quite as big as Forester, but biggest in class for sure.

Check the roof rails - must be aluminum, they are just like the Forester's. Less weight up high is good.

So Subaru has joined the other automakers who blend the stereo head unit right into the dash. That means you'd better like the factory radio, since no aftermarket unit will ever look good! I do think that's an ergonomics snafu to have the hazard light button right in there with the radio controls. I'm from the school that likes to have a clearly defined interface design.

I think that this was posted in another forum, but you can see at the bridgestone website www.bridgestonetire.com that the RE92 in 215/45/17 is a Z rated tire. It is actually the only Z rated tire of the RE92's, so it is very possible that these are competent tires compared to the WRX rolling stock. These are also supposed to be original tires on the IS300.

Dang, this is Imprezton again. I forgot that I had followed Elm's link to this he put on another site.

hmmm, I should have written something like, "hello everybody, I just had to confess that I eat my boogers." ;o) You might want to take down that link over on the USDM.

Love it! Those rims are sweet. 5 spokes, 5 lugs, perfect symmetry.

Rear brakes are vented. No nickels saved here. Floating calipers!

Here you can see the little lip on the front edge I mentioned, Dave.

I seem to recall they were Z-rated, had trouble believing but that must be the case. I'm sure the rubber compound is different.

Craig: Ford did that, but aftermarket vendors still make stereos for the Focus and Taurus.

would it be safe to say that you were asked to reframe from framing the entire GT?

    -Dave
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
    (Imprezton)
yep, I was surprised as well, so I just now went to their site to double check. I didn't double check whether or not it really is OEM for the IS300, but it's possible. Anyway, it looks like these are the best of the RE92 lineup. Besides, I've read that the WRX tires happen to be much worse than other sizes of RE92 that people have had on their other cars. Now if only we could find out that the long bumpers are really just an optical illusion from using a fisheye camera lense.

actually I dislike the wiper nozzles in the cowl. I've had cars with that before and that is a prime spot for snow and ice to accumulate, and is difficult to fully remove. if the nozzles are on the hood or the wiper arm itself it's quite easy to ensure they are clear of ice.

very nice for the 9 months of the year I don't care about snow/ice, sure.

  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Best ones I had were on a couple late 80s Chryslers. they mounted the nozzles right on the wiper arm, and they were awesome. The rest of the cars were crap, however!

Juice you got that pic on if the turbo is 180deg offset for turbine input/compressor output like the IHI RB twin-scroll in the new 2.0GT abroad or if it is a 90degree like an IHI VF series turbo? I'm sure an IHI VF could be fitted (requiring the turbo to be rotated aproximately 45deg counter-clockwise if looking from front of car, but it could work.)

    I am very interested.

Also, great deal-EJ257! Any reason why they tuned it to a 6500rpm limit instead of 7000? I know it's just a little picky, but I'm just wondering. Would really help theirmagazine racing with one less shift in the 1/4. I don't do it often at all, but just wondering. Otherwise those ratios in that gearbox look near perfect in my ratios spreadsheet per rpm. Decent cruising with lots of acceleration potential. Should really move. Nice to have one of the guys from Japan remedy my thoughts on tranny strength as supposedly one of the biggest deals was case flex though supposed to be significantly reduced in this box.

Patiently awaiting turbo pic and info. :)
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
So it is now safe to say ALL Turbo Legacies have rear vented brakes! :)

    -mike
  • sube555lgtsube555lgt Member Posts: 78
I think so Paisan. And that looks like a pretty decent setup to me. That is the same size rear vented brakes (290x18mm) that was used on the last STi Wagon and the 1st Gen latter STi's. The fronts I think are an ittereation of the Brembos or at least close in size. I'd have to say, definitely not a bad combo to have.

cool then both my '94 and '05/'06 Legacies will have rear vented :)

Thanks again to Juice and Bob for the pics and descriptions. Also a big thanks to Patti for making it possible for these diehard Subaru junkies to be there and Edmunds for giving us a forum.

Did you get a chance to check out the new Volvo V50 wagon (or S40 sedan)? It's smaller but I'm guessing some will cross shop this with the Legacy and I'd be curious to hear your impression.

Also, did you see any other new likely competitors?

    Thanks

Got a call from Northwest this morning. They will be dropping off my lost luggage within the next 3 hours. I just hope (A) it is my luggage, and not someone else, and (B) nothing is missing and/or damaged.

If everything is okay, I will e-mail juice my Detroit show images for him to upload. It may be later, however, as I do have some "real" work to do. :)

disclaimer: I don't have fact, I'm not a FHI engineer. but these are the typical reasons such a thing could/would happen.

    1. valvegear different. with different spec valve springs and camshafts, an RPM loss of 500 or more isn't unusual. stiffer springs and lumpier cams equals higher RPM.

    2. connecting rods different. 7000 RPM is relatively high even though the 2.5L boxer four does have a pretty short stroke. (79mm/3.11") if the STi has forged connecting rods, or just beefier ones than the Forester XT and Legacy GT use.

    3. turbocharger is definitely different, and perhaps the one used on the lower-revving engines is designed to flow more at lower rpm/load but tails off a bit on top. this would be suitable for better low-end and midrange performance.

    4. marketing strategy to ensure STi has perceived advantages. :)

    5. All of the above!

  • sube555lgtsube555lgt Member Posts: 78
I am rather aware of that if you were aiming that in my direction. I was just interested what aspect was the culprit. We may say that since the block is the EJ257, you might want to throw out #2.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
wrong. just because it's the same block does not mean that the pistons, connecting rods or even crankshaft are the same. before they were available in the US, the JDM STis all carried the same engine designation regardless of whether they had the standard cast or optional forged internals.

what's with the attitude? I didn't assume anything about you, I just thought the forum in general might benefit from my commentary.

Hmmm... I'm wondering if there will still be an RS sedan sold in Canada? Seems kind of redundant now, if the TS is getting the larger rims and tires and the 'sport' suspension. I think the RS is not long for this world.
    Regards, Owen
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Interesting. So there are quite a few factors that can influence redline. Does the I/C have any impact? I don't know about the turbo, but the GT's I/C is clearly different.

    Ken
  • sube555lgtsube555lgt Member Posts: 78
Easy there Locke, didn't mean to come off harsh, sorry.

BTW, my reasoning for the turbo was for turbo upgrade if indeed that was something of interest down the road. The 90deg versus 180deg and the new style intercooler may make any upgrade a bit of a challenge w/o a new IC.

Juice said he had some pics that he was uploading last night, that's why I mentioned it. :)
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
It's interesting to see the similarities between the GT and the XT. Same engine and same redline, stereo and climate controls are very similar, power outlet in the center armrest, etc. I sure hope that Suabru improved on the CC's auto setting though ;-)

Yes, I'll sort the pics out now and hope to get the rest posted this PM.

I didn't get any full car shots, but I think Bob did. Plus those are all over the place on the web. I really focused on features and details.

One of those pictures is the turbo, and I hope it answers Seth's question.

    Competition? Nothing can compete! :o)

Actually, the closest at the show, IMO, was the Mazda 6s wagon. Same size and both are sporting. The 6 is just FWD for now, 220 hp, Ford Duratec block too. Plus there's still that "staining" issue to sort out, i.e. rust.

Both are nice inside, I think the Legacy has big advantages with AWD and 250hp, but it might also cost more. Of course an AWD 6 would cost the same, so maybe price is a wash.

Me? I'd still fork out the extra cash for the Subie, no doubt.

The V50 was also there, but we could not get in. The new Volvo S40 is a *LOT* smaller than the Legacy sedan. The rear seat is very cramped, WRX size maybe. My feet actually got stuck under/behind the front seat when the guy ahead of me moved it back, it was painful.

Headroom in the S40 is also very poor, my head was rubbing everywhere, again the WRX has more room there.

But...the V50 wagon looks roomier and surely has better headrooom, so the verdict is still out. I doubt legroom is any better, though.

For the sedan, you could say the Acura TSX is a competitor. With that you get optional Nav and loads of standard goodies, but a GT Limited will still blow it away in performance.

What did you expect me to say? I bought the old Legacy, of course I'd choose the new one.

This close-up was meant to appease the HID crazies. Hee hee, just kidding.

Any how, I meant to give you a close up look to see how much room there would be if you really just had to swap it out for an aftermarket HID setup.

Nice aluminum scuff plates. Wish my Miata had these!

Carpets are good, not great. Not quite the wool on the Bimmers, but not econo-carpet either.

Peek at the seat track, which looks flat and easy to modify if necessary, unlike the Forester's which angles downward.

Finally, that little clip holds the floor mats in place, those had been removed.

All window switches are back-lit, very nice. Lock is still backwards from the Forester, and counter-intuitive in my humble opinion.

The plastics are padded/soft and have a nice texture to them. You can peek at the map pocket too.
