That's kind of good, because I am one of those complaining about the bumpers that were on there...which I hypothesized were the Outback bumpers also over on the NASIOC board. Hopefully this is the case, they definately do not do the "flow" of the car justice...like the JDM model's do, who are are awesome right of the bat."

In case you haven't already figured out what chassis they were referring to, it was the bare one (i.e. without body work) not the GT. So no those bigger bumpers are US spec.

This probably also answers sweet_subies question as well. There are the JDM "sleek" bumpers and the ones the U.S. gets which are an extra couple of inches front and back. You should hear the uproar over at NASIOC about the bumpers. OH MY GOD are people not happy with them. I do see the difference and while I prefer the JDM more rounded and sleeker look, I'll be happy to live with these.

My 97 Sebring Coupe has that trunk feature also. It is great. Keeps people out of my stuff like my CD changer.

I also like the feature of the remote gas door opener from inside the car.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
as did my '96 Stratus sedan

The U.S. has different specs for bumpers (crashworthiness, etc), hence the change from the JDM bumpers. I don't follow the nabisco forums, but c'mon, get over the bumpers. The rest of the car is spectacular.

    in my humble opinion.....

Overall sleekness is compromised by this extra think bumpers.

go to subaru global & check JDM legacy sleekness, it is unmatched !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with Brian, it doesn't matter how nice the JDM bumpers look, you ain't gonna see'em over here so just get over it! I seriously doubt that Subaru could produce a vehicle that would completely satisfy the nabisco crowd. I'm sure the Legacy's US spec bumpers aren't any bigger than every other manufacturer's. Besides, fat bumpers or not, I still think the 05 Legacy is gorgeous!

Fat bumpers and only 250/250. Geez. They won't be happy unless it has 400/400, 7 spd., 18 in rims for around $25,000 and arrives at dealers on Monday morning.

OK, so maybe the locking trunk ain't a luxury feature. Oddly, I haver never owned a single vehicle that had that feature, nor has my wife. That's about 7 vehicles I can remember that lacked the lock.

US regs for bumpers are stricter, so they had to be different.

I'll join the minority here - the US spec bumpers look better to me. I like the center split, plus it's body color.

Look at the JDM bumper, it has a cheesy matte black insert around the fog lights. I hate it. Looks like they couldn't paint it to cut costs.

You guys really think that looks better?

    Diff'rent strokes....

Wondering why the Car of Japan got such little attention in detroit.

Half the websites such as edmunds, motortrend don't even have coverage on legacy

    wonder why ?
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Those for the USDM bumper, raise hand and smile :)
Those against... move to Europe or Asia ;)

I thought they were very nicely done, given the parimeters they're forced to work with.

and I buy it. I got tired of waiting for the Subaru 7-passenger so I got the Sienna XLE AWD with package GK(#17)+CF. Leather heated, heated mirrors, all the safety stuff, VDC, TC, dual zone, fancy stereo, and bunch of other stuff like integrated window shades.

Its basically a Grand Outback. Just like out Outback its quiet, easy to drive, lots of features and best of all.....I only paid $32842 OTD.

We really like my wifes OB and still have it but we needed more room so I traded my 01 Protege ES 2.0. If Subaru made something bigger I would have considered it. Oh well.
  • sweet_subiesweet_subie Member Posts: 1,394
BTW, what sienna has is just traction not VDC....see 2004 auto show

toyota is introducing VDC in the next lexus
  • nematodenematode Member Posts: 448
On the Sienna they cannot be separated. In fact you cannot separate AWD from the TC/VDC package either. The "," is really close to the "/" and I cant type. So it should have been VDC/TC. I'm not even sure you can separate the airbag system from the above 2 packages. Its just one giant package called GK.

Toyota has about 15-20 different packages for the XLE. Its pretty difficult to find exactly what you want.

maybe the 'car of japan' received 'short shrift' since detroit is traditionally the capital of american autos????
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,398
My 2000 Legacy sedan has a lockable trunk feature. It's just not the fancy keyhole next to the levers.

You insert the key into the trunk lock, turn it in the "wrong" direction and remove the key. The inside lever becomes inoperable. Opening with the key resets it.

Brenda- true, the big-three bias is evident in all the ink that the new Vette and Mustang (among others) garnered. Still, there is plenty of space given to various European models, luxury Japanese models, main stream Japanese models, heck even Korean models but a quick check of Edmunds NAIAS coverage reveals nary a mention of the Legacy. This strikes me as a particularly glaring omission given that the Subaru Crew is probably the most active on Edmunds (Steve- you got any stats on that?). I guess it’s a good thing for us that Juice and Bob got to go and provide us with our own inside reporting!

ironically, most of those american autos that Detroit is proud of are made/assembled in Mexico.

Our legacy is made in USA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Once magazines like Car and Driver get to test the new Legacy, then we'll see how everything is going to shape up. The car looks like a winner, and it would be great if the journalists agree.

The car of the year award in Japan is voted on by journalists if I remember right. I think that bodes well for us.

A few months back, I had a 2004 Legacy L loaner while my Forester was in the shop. IIRC, it had a key hole next to the trunk release lever to allow you to disable this feature from inside the car.

I know I've posted this somewhere before ... my son-in-law wouldn't let my daughter even look at Subaru when they were buying a new car because it's not "American" ..... so instead they bought a Pontiac Aztex enabling me to point out with great glee that MY "Japanese" car was built in the USA while their "American" car was built in Mexico!
(What do you expect from a guy with a mullet?)

Remember, this was not the Legacy's debut. These journalists have already seen the car and reported on it. It was just the US-spec model that debuted.

And yes, it's definitely home turf for the Big 3, even for Chrysler, which is now German owned. I saw a PT Cruiser custome painted with the US flag, never mind that it's Mexican built and German owned.

nematode: we hear you. I think the AWD is a VC system, too, so it has a lot in common with Subaru. Sienna would be our choice in vans right now, too. If the 7 seater is too small, we may join you.

The mullet will go perfectly with the Aztec. ;-)

I hope the Legacy gets the attention it deserves in the press.

The Forester XT was largely ignored. I saw maybe one major review (C&D), and a few "updates", hardly any full road tests.

Hmm, could the Edmunds Town Hall Test Drive Team help, perhaps? I will bravely volunteer our services to get this model properly evaluated. Note that Bob and paisan are also members.

The three of us (plus other Test Drive member, including varmint and Shiftright) could give a well rounded review:

paisan: focus on torque, with some attention to the torque curve. Plus don't forget torque. Maybe some track time for a serious evaluation of its torque?

Bob: focus on design, with real world towing tests.

me: the family test. Can it handle a toddler and a 4 year old's abuse?

    Just a hint, Subaru. ;-)

Okay I will raise my hand for the US spec bumper,

And this is my 2 cents get over it guys this is the bumper we are getting, and for all the rest there will be aftermarket no doubt.

      Cheers Pat.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
That bumper that you are raving over is similar to the US spec 01-02 Legacy bumper
    image

This is a shot of my 01 GT.

While it is not identical you can see it is not very far removed either.

then you could let ME drive just to get the opinion of someone who doesn't know a THING about cars except what *I* like ... lol ...(I like to 'think' I'm unique but there have to be a few more like me out there!

On the bumper, if you take a look at the 03 Legacy bumper you again can see the similarity between it and the new bumper.

I actually contemplated at one time swapping out my 01 for an 03 because I liked it much better, the cost for the bumper skin+foglights+painting came to about$1000CDN so I decided to live with the bumper I have.

      Cheers Pat.

a trivial item as the USDM bumper. Order a EDM or JDM bumper and bolt it on...

I agree, as I said in an earlier post get over it, but at the same we all have the right to debate it if thats what turns your crank.

      Cheers Pat.
  • sweet_subiesweet_subie Member Posts: 1,394
OK OK, bumper is not such a big deal...i was just a little disappointed that it wasn;t as sleek as JDM's

OK, my wife won't let me buy wagon/OB without NAV in it..........i hope sub won't disap me there.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
There is still a chance the Outback will get a Nav system. I have a feeling the GT Limited will cost far less than the VDC model Outback, so there is room for more content on the OB.

    -juice
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
The Outback H-6 VDC may be the more appropriate model for a nav system to appear. My gut feeling is that the premium Outback will be more gizmo-friendly (and more expensive) than the premium Legacy GT Limited.

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It got the Mac first...the GT still didn't get that. Plus they pitch the H6 as the luxury powertrain. It'll make about the same power, so the turbo is about value-priced performance.

I'll agree with you sweet_subie. I like the look of the JDM bumpers better. Not a deal breaker though. I think the USDM look is already starting to grow on me. The more I look at it, the better I like it.

Subaru to introduce 7-seater in '05; vehicle to show off new design direction

i may just get a GT sedan & wait for the 7-seater..........as my 2nd car
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
McIntosh stereo, OK, sorry. You still pronounce it "Mac" for shorthand. ;-)

That first article says GT will be in showrooms in April. Autoweek says it'll go on sale in May, but they still can't spell Forester. So who knows?

"The core values are still in place" says Zapatinas, good. But he says the 7 seater will compete with the Pacifica and MDX.

Well, which one? You can get a Pacifica now for $27 grand. OK, FWD model, but still it's under $30k. MDX can exceed $40k. That's a very wide spread.

It may be out of my price range: "premium-priced, seven-passenger sport wagon in mid-2005". Just 35-40k unit is low volume. Mid $30s to start.

I imagine they'll load up even the base models. I really wish they'd offer a wide range of pricing and equipment. Look at the Sienna, they go from $24k up above $40k. Check out demand for those.

i believe they will show in NYC, apr 04
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I'm certain they'll be in NY, that show it too important for them to miss. I bet the Outback will also be there, after debuting in Chicago.

When is Philly? The Crew should meet up for that.

Juice- Don't we all? Unfortunately "low volume" and "wide range" are fairly mutually exclusive terms. Besides, if Suabru sold as many vehicles as Toyota, I probably wouldn't be as big fan :-)
