Juice, I just snagged four pristine boxes from a Discount Tire Store. They are even designed for 15" wheels. Now, just need to get them unmounted. I don't suppose one can just do that in their driveway, could they? I imagine the bead is harder to break than mortal hands could muster, plus I'd be afraid I'd damage the wheel or myself.

Stephen, I just noticed something. That reddish car behind yours in the top picture looks suspiciously like mine. Is that a Legacy? Just wondering. I've told my wife, son and newborn to make do without me tonight until I see pictures of the tint. They said, "what about Survivor and Friends, daddy, husband, daddy?" I told them "Shush!" So, post them quickly, oh NW man.

    Jim

Edit: gbrozen: Usually quite reasonable. I wouldn't be surprised if Stephen beat $200.00, although wagons can be a little more.

    Jim:

breaking the bead and dismounting your average car tire is not a lot of fun. high performance, low-profile types are even less fun.

it's possible though if you have the tools, preferably a plastic set since it's an alloy rim. I change tires for my motorcycles by hand all the time but you'd never see me try it on a car tire, fwiw. ;-)

Ok, Jimmy the family can relax now. :-)

I went w/5% on back windows and rear (limo tint)and 20% front sides. I'm actually illegal as front sides can either be 35% or not at all (can't remember the WA State law). I wasn't thrilled w/the contrast between 35% and 5% of the front and rear sides so I went illegal, shhh...don't tell anyone! :-)

Oh, yeah and I forgot that I won't be able to lower my windows for the next 3 days. The last day of this ban is Sun, the big Vancouver B.C. Soobie Meet. Oh well....

When I got back home today from having the WRX tinted, a pkg from Vishnu was on my doorstep! I got my Stage 0! I also pick up my painted STi hoodscoop tomorrow. Life's good and very good, and so it is! :-)

  • ponmponm Member Posts: 139
slow connection it took me almost five minutes to download the two pictures, but well worth it Stephen. Wagon keeps looking better and better. Out of curosity, who painted your hood scoop? I was thinking about getting the wrc grill for my wagon, and of course it comes unpainted.

Awesome pics . I also just had my windows tinted in my outback . But here in NJ the front windows are illegal so I went with limo tint on the 5 windows . It cost me 180.00 and the guy picked my car up at work and dropped it back off when done . It looks great with my dark blue paint .
If any body in the South Jersey Area wnats there windows tintedlet me know and I'll give the guys # .

the front windows are illegal? Even a light tint? Well, i would ask the number, but if i can't get at least something on my fronts, then i don't want to do anything. I never think a sedan looks good with just the rears done.

No tint on the front 2 side windows in NY and NJ beyond what the car came with from the factory. I have 30% tint on the front windows of my Trooper and never have had a problem even having been pulled over a number of times for other infractions. The rears are factory 20% tint and when the fronts get old I'm gonna have em re-done to 20% as well. The windshield can have I believe ~6" of tint from the top down, but don't quote me on the exact # of Inches.

I think WA State may be the same as NJ but I also couldn't imagine driving around w/nothing on the front sides and 5% on the rear/back. It's too much contrast. Another advantage of having the WRX wagon vs sedan (at least in WA)is that the back sides and rear window can legally be 5% (limo tint). :-)

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Anything behind the front 2 side windows can have anything up to 0%(painted over) on the rest.

There's something about fooling the brain into thinking that it's one solid piece of matter, tint makes the car look beefier. I love it! I fanned the word out on iClub for tint shop recommendations in Houston. I think I'll keep this car until that B4 Sti comes out = 2-4 years, so why not, especially given how cheap it is. Thanks for the kick in the pants!

That would be perfect. The XT6 should hold me in auto-x til then! :)

Hee hee. Well I'm sure it'll work out. Currently I am waiting for my aunt's SVX which I'll be getting in fall, then the XT6 goes to full-time auto-x. So by the time your car is ready for sale it will be lower in price and I'll have more $ :)

If you are not allowed tint on the front 2 windows in NY, how come the tint shops are offering it? I'm finally looking into doing the tint job (30% Charcoal or Stealth, not sure which will look better on the OB) and the skidplates. I just have to finish work on the house, then it's time for the Subie!

But it's illegal to drive with it, and they'll tell you that you are putting it on at your own risk. Basically it can be sold, but not used, w/o a special note from your doctor requiring it.

Acually my car doesn't look to bad with the 5 windows done . I have had other cars with all of them tinted and had to have it removed because the car failed the state inspection .The inspection station I go to has the worst reputation in the state for being ball busters when it comes to cars with aftermarket mods. When I was there the other day getting my gfriends moms car done .They tried to fail it because it had a tire plug in the back tire . There was a lady that came in with a Volvo station wagon with an aftermarket bug sheild. They failed it because they said that it was too tall and obstucted the view out of the windshield .

    Mike k
  • lakepoplakepop Member Posts: 221
Mike....don't understand why you are using this guy if he is such a pain. Here in NY we can get an inspection at any authorized station.

Sounds like you folks need to bypass his operation. Wow a too big bug deflector!!
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
In NJ it's free at a State-facility, in NY you pay and take it to any authorized place. I think you need to pay if you bring it to a non-state run place.

Since the direct link exceeds 115 characters, here's what the NYS DMV website says about window tinting (to protect police officers from being blindsided when making a traffic stop):

    Question
What are the laws in NYS regarding tinted or shaded windshields and windows?

    Answer
Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits a windshield, as well as sidewings and side windows which are adjacent to or forward of the driver, from being "composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent...". In other words, 70% of light must be transmitted through the glass, and therefore the tinting may not block more than 30% of the light.

This standard also applies to rear windows unless the vehicle is equipped with rear-view mirrors on both sides which give a full and clear view behind the vehicle.

It is illegal to sell, offer for sale, equip or operate a vehicle which violates this standard.
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,753
so then you can have SOME tint in NY, right? Seems that way by the law.

Wonder what it says here in Jersey.

  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
So 30% is ok then. Darn I better get my 20% installed can't be legal about this stuff! :)

I also found on the NYS DMV page this tid bit... No out of state tickets are charged back to your NYS Liscence unless it is a DUI ticket or if the ticket is issued in Quebec or Ontario. So I just realized that any out of state ticket will be merely an extra toll :)

Well it's not like I'm gonna purposely go out and speed, I'm not made of $ and tickets are about $100+ each. But I can breathe a sigh of relief that it won't hit my insurance rates.

Scott: Thanks for letting me know the debadging turned out alright! :-)

Jimmy: Thanks...the wax job helped too, LOL!

http://www.procooling.com/~clegg/tommicrash.wmv <---- rather large video (1:13) of tommi crashing the WRX. Amazing.

http://www.cobbtuning.com <---- Just the simple flash animation (text) at the beginning. There have been some teasers about a project car ("Project 666") and they are finally giving some hints as to what kind of performance we might see. It's a turbocharged H6, and lookey at what kind of 1/4 mile times they are expecting. Wow. Makes a B4 seem like a dog.

The tint looks sinister. Evil. If it were black it would be Darth Vader's car. ;-)

BTW, I paid $170 for 7 windows tinted to 35% with SolarGard dyed film. Metallic film may cost a bit more.

That scoop looks ANGRY, like it wants to eat the car in front of you! Careful! LOL

    -juice
  • barresa62barresa62 Member Posts: 1,379
Yeah, the scoop is really aggressive in person (maybe need to keep it on a leash, LOL). You can see the intercooler clearly. I need to look into some wire mesh grilling.

I was surprised at how well I can see out of the tint in the rear (5% limo tint), even at night. I also already forget how light it is outside until I roll down the window...almost like the land of the mole people. :-)

but some people are thinking the car actually flips over someone (a spectator). I just can't quite tell. If it did, he's the luckiest person alive (which is the caption of the original post on iClub).

    Jim
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Did anyone on the i-club ever get around to measuring intercooler temps (oem vs. STi)?

    -Dennis
  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,753
Absolutely that car flipped over someone. Maybe its just my computer/video card/screen, I don't know, but I can see it perfectly clear. It looks like the guy turns away to run but just didn't know which way to go. He kinda did a couple of turns and ended up just watching the car land a few feet away. Time for a new pair of shorts. :)

The guy at the rally didn't even know (because he was looking off into the field that the rally car was flipping over him until it was completely over the top of him. Very lucky!

Over the weekend I participated in the big NW i-club Installfest at one of the member's house. I planned on having my Stage 0 pkg installed on Sat.
There was a large turnout of cars for various install mod projects such as grounding mod, foglight, spring/strut, tinting, pulley, plug mods, etc. I had the bigger project of the weekend. I got right in and started to remove the items that are in the way of the spark plugs and pulley/belts conversion. I was really nervous as my expertise is nil. Basically, you tell me what I need to loosen or tighten, and I do it. I was by myself on this for most of the AM. By noon or so, the guy that has done like 7 uppipe installs from the Stage 0 pkg showed up. We finished gapping (about 26mm) the new, colder NGK spark plugs and installing, removing the stock pulley (one heavy sucker), and installed the new, lighter one and new belts. We got the car back together in order to start it and turn it around so that the front end was facing toward the garage opening and jacked up to prepare for the uppipe install. I now understand a big reason why the 30k svc is so expensive on the WRX. In order to remove the spark plugs, you need to remove just about everything on either side of the engine. The plugs are down at the bottom on either side.

So, we now had the car turned around and up on ramps. In order to install the new uppipe, you have to loosen the connection of the downpipe to the front midpipe, loosen the exhaust from the manifold and loosen the stock uppipe form the downpipe. You need to remove the intercooler and a pleuthra of heat shields. The WRX has a heck of a lotta' shields! Well, one the bolts seized between the downpipe and uppipe connections. One of the guys made a quick errand to get the right tool. I was underneath loosening some connections and I could hear another person working on the nut at the end of the seized bolt above me. I believe he was using a 12pt lug nut instead of a 6pt and effectively rounded the bolt. We then proceeded to find an open store (it was about 7pm) that had a nut splitter and stud remover tool...no luck. As this search is going on, another guy yells down to me and asks me where I got a large dent on my driver's fender side. I'm thinking, this is not the time for joking! Turns out that the wagon fenders are pathetically weak and dent in easily. The fender was pushed in from someone leaning on it while trying to loosen some stubborn bolts. I had to loosen the fender lining in the wheelwell and pop the dent out w/my hand. I got most but the remaining ones won't come out w/o a visit to the DentWizard.

So, now I decide to just get the car back together w/o the new uppipe conversion, or unichip, or MBC installed. My main guy leaves and w/him, takes his o2 sensor tool that allows one to reinstall the sensor. Additionally, another bolt galls as we try to tighten up the spot where the uppipe connects to the downpipe. So, it's 9pm and I've been there since 8:30am. I have to leave the car in the garage after backing it off the ramps because the front end is sticking out the garage opening. I bum a ride back w/another guy. I'm tired, frustrated, worried, angry, and regretful.

Fast foward, I go back the next day and one other guy who has some uppipe experience shows up. I decide to just get the car back together and take it to a shop to do the uppipe, unichip, MBC, and turbo gauge install (should have done this all along!). I've bought a nut splitter and stud remover form Sears that AM. As we are putting back together, another bolt/nut galls itself where the downpipe connects to the midpipe. We still have the first bolt that's seized in the uppipe area. We manage to nut split and remove one of the seized bolts there but not the others because of a lack of clearance. We tighten everything up, put the intercooler back on, and start the car up to see how bad the exhaust leak(s) are. Well, there is one between the downpipe/midpipe but the uppipe/downpipe area is holding well. The car sounds kind of throaty at idle but more like a lawnmower on steroids w/any rpms. I have my Pocketlogger and Palm Pilot hooked up at this point and don't throw any codes. I drove home short-shifting to keep out of the turbo boost as much as possible. No CELs, thankfully.

Today I'm calling DentWizard to get the fender repaired (no paint creasing or cracking present, thankfully). I'm also calling the shop I should have taken the car to in the first place about the uppipe installation. They will also have to grind off the two seized/galled bolts. I've left off a few items that they would have to remove to get to it so it's a bit easier on them.

Well...this is the long, sad saga. I've learned my lesson. The Installfest would have been fine if 1)there were less cars participating, 2)it was just Stage 0 installs, 3)I only had a more minor project to complete..i.e. plugs, pulley, lights, etc.

I met up w/Lark6 (Ed) right after Sunday's install and showed him what happened. It was good to be able to process w/someone and good to meet another SubaruCrew person in the flesh. This was probably the highlight of an otherwise "painful" weekend. :-) Sorry for the loooong post.

Stephen, good to meet you too. Sorry that my friend and I were on a tight schedule; we had to get back to his house and cook dinner. WRX owners, do be careful when leaning on the fenders and hoods of your cars!

My visit to Seattle and the OP was very interesting from a car standpoint - it seemed like at least 10% of the cars on the OP were Subarus of some sort, not quite that high a % in Seattle proper but more than here. Lots of neat antique iron, too. Story for another post.

Sorry to hear about the problem stephen. One rule we have at our installfests is that everyone gets everything we start installed. We have had some downpipe nuts seize on us as well during our last installfest :(

Thanks Ed for "witnessing" and Mike for your words. I like your installfest rule! I felt I was left a bit out to dry. I was amazingly calm on the outside but really wanted to rip someone...anyone...a new backside!!!(myself included actually).

Bummer, sounds like too much to get done in one weekend. You needed more hands and fewer cars.

It's cool, lesson learned. Be patient and you'll get it all installed professionally.

I feel for you. Would had sent me for a stein of dinkelacker, or two.
FWIW, I know the sheet metal are pretty soft, but it doesn't look like it was caused from leaning. Looks more like someone had your fender to break their fall (shoulder, elbow and all...).
Good Lock with the DentWizard, I'm sure they'll careress her back to shape :)
