Ford Focus Parts & Repairs

Many readers in the hatchback conference are
already familiar with my situation. I picked up our
ZX3 on the night of 12/16/99. On my way home a
deer ran out in front of me and I hit it. I have
been waiting for a left front fender for almost 4
weeks now. The bumper, hood and headlights are all
in. How long can a part possibly be back-ordered in
today's world. I mean its not like its 1955 or
something. My point is this... WHAT IS A REASONABLE
TIME FRAME FOR A CAR TO BE REPAIRED? I've never
needed a bodyshop before in 24 years of driving.
This just seems to be absurd and a poor reflection
on Ford Motor Company's Parts Division. I am not
angry with my dealership yet but my frustration
level is growing.

Wow- unbelievably bad break with an accident on day one with a new car! On the other hand, it was even worse for the deer. I know you are anxious for your fender, but part of the bad luck is that these cars are so new that spare parts haven't filled the pipeline yet. It won't be long before you will practically be able to get fenders at Wal-Mart. I personally ordered a head restraint for a 2000 Taurus recently and was amazed to get it in only one week. I'm not surprised you are having trouble getting the fender in 4. It's possible that your dealership forgot to order the part when they should have, but if you feel like they have done what they can, you are better off just relaxing and hanging in there. It'll come in when it comes in regardless of your blood pressure. For some reference, My co-worker was without his car for about 6 weeks after hitting a deer with similar damage in November. It was an Acura that was several years old.

I once waited for 5 weeks to get a Cat. Converter from Ford. No aftermarket replacement because of special application. Funny you should mention 55, I have a 55 Buick Century that is easy, but expensive, to get almost anything for.

i suspect the dealership wanted to try to fix the existing fender at first. i went up there and insisted on a new one. so they probably ordered it later than the other parts. the thing that haunts me is i called another ford dealer on the other side of town and they said that availability was not a problem. ???? makes me wonder what the heck is going on. would you recommend i call ford customer assistance personally and explain? afterall if my dealership is on the up and up they have nothing to hide by me going over thier head so to speak.
  • btroybtroy Member Posts: 92
Just because the other dealership said "it's not a problem" doesn't guarantee that they could have gotten the part 2 weeks ago. I have encountered people at dealerships who have told me "it's not a problem" and that has often preceeded a big problem. It probably won't do you much good to go over the head of the dealership to Ford Customer Service. They are all in bed together and they will probably end up laughing about the situation together. A more effective strategy would be to go over the head of the parts people within the dealership. Complain to the parts manager or the general manager and ask for some verification that the order has been placed and that the delay is legitimate. Otherwise you can cancel the order and try your luck getting the fender through the "it's not a problem" dealership.

i'm just going to wait it out now. i did call fords hotline. they were very polite and told me the fender was on emergency order. as someone once said it'll come in when it comes in! my zx3 is a 5spd. i don't know what made me think of it this morning but my zx3 doesn't have the reverse lock-out ring that was directly underneath the shift knob on the one i test drove. everyone else ive talked to says it should have one. my dealership doesnt seem to know what im talking about. any advice? i figured its no big deal but they could order it while the car is waiting for the fender.

waiting 34 days now with no end in sight on bodyshop repairs. my car was delivered in 50 days. good lord are they jerking me around? i must say i am running low on patience. if i don't hear from them by weeks end i am going to call ford again and then i may contact a local consumer group and/or news station. really scarcity of parts is one thing but this is ridiculous. opinions?

Has any other 2000 Focus owner experienced a problem with leaking transmission oil? I have recently been in the shop 3 weeks on this issue. Problem was car was missing part during factory-build. Also, sealant was required and not installed around the o-ring. Sound familiar to anyone? Help!

With headlights on and engine running on my ZTS with automatic transmission, the lights flicker for about one second after any light is turned on or off. For example, if brake pedal is pressed or released, or if interior light is turned on or off. All lights will flicker including the dash lights. The dealer says this may be a "characteristic" of the car.

Does anyone know about this problem?
  • pcleveland2pcleveland2 Member Posts: 516
How does your dealer know this is characteristic of the car. Just how many ZTS's are out there. I've only seen one on the road in this area, along with a few LX's and SE's and my ZX3. My lights don't flicker and I'll bet we have the same wiring harness. Tell that to your dealer. If your don't get anywhere with the service mgr., go to his boss and if you don't get anywhere with him, call the ford district rep and tell him what the dealership says. Sounds like they don't want to deal with it.

I was wondering what kind of motor oil and filter people were using after the break-in period. I was looking for the right K&N filter but after customer service couldn't tell me the part number, decided to go with Castrol MaxPro Plus and Castrol Syntec 0W30 oil. What are you using?

Like "ProjectZX3", I have a Ford Focus (ZTS) that has had damage to the front left end. It has been in the body shop since January 20th waiting for parts. I can't believe that Ford puts a car on the market without having the parts to support it. If anyone has any ideas as to how I can speed up the process, I'd appreciate hearing them. Thanks!

I have a ZX3 and notice that my LCD tripometer and back lights flicker when I turn on airconditioner or press break pedal.

hello. i bought a ford focus SE last week. last night, someone hit my car while i was sleeping and smashed the entire left back rear. my questions are: do you guys think i will be waiting an eternity to get it fixed? is the focus' parts
"shortage" still going on or are people getting their car fixed in a reasonable amount of time? is their anyone i can call to complain to before i start this horrible process?
  • norwaydougnorwaydoug Member Posts: 249
    Dear NCHAS,

My zx-3 was only struck on the side while I was sleeping and the car was in the parking lot.

It took 6 weeks to partially be fixed. I had it for a week, but returned it due to problems and they have had it for 6 days and are currently waiting for parts. THE abs light is on and since it is a safety issue....it is undriveable.

I suggest that you speak to the manager of the dealer, your area representative, ford customer service (speak only in person...do not e-mail). Document when and who you call and have a log.

I hope you do not have the problems I have. I believe your car should be fixed in 10 working days. If it takes longer....start calling and complaining, but always remain calm.

I think it is good to speak to the manager of the dealership immediately and say that you have heard that there a major parts problems and you would like to be kept informed. They have ordered parts for me by emergency back order (not that it works!)

    Good luck

    #0 of 0: Why Focus won't start. (przeho) Sat 22 Apr '00 (09:00 AM)

I have a 2000 Ford Focus automatic Ztec engine. The problem is it won't start. Anybody with the same problem. Any answers? The dealer replaced the fuel pump and a fuel pump relay switch. The car ran find for one day. It sat it the garage overnight. The next day I went to start it and it just cranks and cranks. The dealer has it again. It's not the cutoff switch. It has gas in it. Anybody with the same problem? Thanks,

Having same problem with transmission leak as previous poster on a focus SE ordered from the factory. I noticed the drippings in the garage over time, and took it to the dealer. They say they are replacing the transmission, no other details as to the cause. It's been in for more than a week so far. Should having the dealer install a new transmission on a focus with 4000 miles cause me to consider asking for a new car?
  • przehoprzeho Member Posts: 10
This is an update as to what the dealer did to fix the problem: The first time the car was towed to the dealer they only replaced the fuel pump relay. The second time they replaced the fuel pump and the relay. The car has been starting for the past week with no problems. They said the fuel pump was shorting out the relay. If anybody else ever has this problem make sure the fuel pump and relay are both replaced. Just as a side note I know of one other Focus that had the same problem and that person lives right down the street from me. The same dealer replaced both parts and their car is also running fine.
  • burdawgburdawg Member Posts: 1,524
Shorting out the relay? I doubt it. More than likely they found that the relay installed was inadequate (the contact ratings are to low) causing rapid failure. Installing a larger relay, or one with contacts rated for higher current, was probably the solution.

I have an auto ZX3 and I notice a slight flicker of the headlights when I park my car and let my foot off the brake. I only notice this at the garage at work when the beams are aimed at the wall and I am close to it. It happens quick. I really haven't noticed it at any other time.

i have a focus se 5 spd and was wondering if anyone has a problem with the clutch spring. i was driving when it snapped and hit my foot...took it to the dealer and after a five hour wait was told the spring is made in england and is on national back order until july 15. dealer wants to strip it off of another focus on tne lot and put it on mine. i think this sounds strange. any advice?
  • jwkessler1jwkessler1 Member Posts: 99
A slight flickering (brief dimming) of the headlights or other lights when stepping on the brake is fairly common, and not at all unexpected.
The filament resistance of an incandecent lamp is quite low when the lamp is off and the filament is cold. Once it heats up the resistance increases a lot. This means that when power is first applied to a lamp, it's initial current draw is fairly high. Once the filaments are glowing the current rapidly drops off.

Brake lights are rather bright so they tend to draw a fair amount of power, even after the filament is glowing. When the brake light comes on, the initial current surge can cause a brief and slight dip in the car's power which can be seen in the headlight output. A similar surge might be noticable when the lights go out and the load on the car's electrical system instantly drops.

This might be especially noticable at idle when the alternator isn't putting out as much power.

This is pretty much the same effect you might see at home when your refrigerator comes on and the lights dim briefly.

Of course other high current electrical devices, like the AC compressor clutch, can cause similar effects.

I have a Focus wagon and since I started using the air conditioning this summer I have noticed water soaked carpet under my front driver and passenger floor mats. Has anyone else noticed this? This my fist car with A/C and at first I noticed a musty smell every time I used it. My husband dropped the car off this morning for the dealership to look at it and I when I find any info on this I be back to townhall with an update.
  • kfloreskflores Member Posts: 2
Well the dealership had to take ALL of the seats out of the car (Focus Wagon) and TEAR OUT all of the carpet!! Apparently this is going to take about a week. If any one has had this happen to them, please let me know if I should expect any other related problems.
  • powerslidepowerslide Member Posts: 48
Someone else posted about a similar problem awhile back. Seems it was a plugged a/c drain. I'd be willing to bet the store that it is the same problem. Make sure (DEMAND)they put in NEW carpet or you will always have a musty smelling car.

I am looking for a reliable hatchback. I saw a kona fully loaded they were asking 15,580. I like the way it looks compared to the civic'00 they are asking for 12,156 , but bottom line is that I need a reliable car. The dealer is also trying to sell me a 99 plymouth voyager with a 4 cyl 2.4L fuel injected for 14,900 but I went in the town hall and everyone was complaining about tranny problems at 60,000 miles I don't know which is best since I don't know to much about cars.

I really would appreciate your help.
  • powerslidepowerslide Member Posts: 48
Do you NEED the $800 or so mountain bike that is part of the Kona package? If not you can get a plain ZX3 for less. Offer them invoice and go from there. You should be able to get one for near that. A Voyager? You aren't really considering the mini-van are you? And a 4cyl one at that! It's no wonder so many people fall asleep at the wheel. YAWN!
  • mottingmotting Member Posts: 2
I have the same problem as some of the previous posts with water in the front passenger floor pan when the A/C is used. It sounds like this is not an unusual problem. It's probably the drain for the evaporator housing being clogged.

My car: Focus 2000 ZTS, Ztec engine. Yesterday, after visiting some friends my car went PuFf!! won't start! period. I called the Roadside assistance and when help arrived they diagnosed a problem with the "starter"

Today, I left my Silver Focus at dealership and I'm supposed to hear from them tomorrow morning.

The engine made this sound: click click click.. pat, Did your car make the same noise?
  • pat455pat455 Member Posts: 603
Actually, I think you mean to be asking that question of przeho - I had reposted something in #22 for this Town Hall member - he or she also has a message about the starting problem in #24.

Perhaps he or she will see your post and respond.

Hope you are back on the road again quickly!

I just bought my ZTS and love it. However, the day after buying it, I discovered that the trunk did not shut correctly.

Brought it to the dealerships Service Center. Latch was changed but when I got it home, still did not work correctly. It seemed out of alignment so I brought it to another dealership/Service Center. They refused to work on it saying "It needs body work because it was out of alignment and possibly damaged and they can't do it...it needed to be brought back to the dealership where I bought it.

Went back to the original dealership and was told, that the Focus' trunk is "flimsy". They adjusted the trunk but one side sticks up a little higher up than the other. Not a major thing, like "not starting", but I am afraid of letting this thing go...

Questions: I don't trust my original dealership now. What are my rights? What should I do to cover myself for the warranty? Has anyone else found their trunk to be "flimsy". Is the trunk supposed to "pop up" when the remote is pressed?

Just an asside...the little hook on the floor mat seems to be pulling up my carpeting. Is there anyway to get that removed without damaging the carpet...Thanks for the tips on the leather seats!!!

I hope ford soon gets this under control! They are supposed to fix mine!

After raving about this car months ago in Town Hall, I am sorry to report that it has reached it's third warranty repair within 24000 miles.

The first problem was the failure of the clutch pedal spring within the interior portion. The end of this strong spring is very weak at it's stress point, which is where it connects. It had been making a "ping" sound for weeks, and then "KAPOW" while waiting for a red light in the middle lane of a three-lane boulevard. The clutch pedal was then reduced to a bare minimum, and the cruise control ceased to work (as a safety feature, I was told). Roadside Assistance refused to come out, as the car was still "drivable". However, the mechanic at the dealer said that it was a good thing that I got it to him as soon as possible. They fixed it with the same type of spring that took 3 days to order. I still hear the "ping" occasionally, and am waiting for it to fail again.

Strike number two was the air conditioning condenser runoff draining into the passenger front compartment and creating a mildew smell. They kept the car for a week, after they took another Focus apart to find the problem. It turns out that an entire sealing kit was "left off" during assembly. Having been tested in Germany for two years prior to it's US release, I can understand why this problem has only recently arisen, as Germans don't need AC. The repairs require that the entire dashboard be removed to "fix" this problem.

Strike number three happened when my wife picked the car after the AC problem was "fixed". Well it was flowing liquid "freon" into the same area, and the cruise control had been forgotten to be reattached. She got only a few miles from the dealer and had to return it, where it now sits again.

The good part of all this, is that we got an LX
Focus with an automatic transmission as a rental. This has changed my way of thinking about automatics, especially on my 45-mile daily commute (each way). My next car will be a Honda Accord Coupe with an automatic transmission. The rental also made me appreciate all of the bells and whistles that we have in the SE, as power windows should be mandatory on the Focus.

I was a devoted Ford/Mazda car buyer, but this Focus experience has suddenly turned my views sour. I plan to trade this Focus in as soon as possible on a Honda! For those who are still thinking about buying a Focus, DON'T DO IT!!! This is the second least reliable car that I have ever owned out of my last 10 new cars. And evidently, the problems are not limited to just my car. Those Focus owners who don't have AC or manual transmissions have less to worry about, but I now have complete faith that something else will soon break on it. Good luck to all the other Focus owners!

ok, here is the scoop. called the Ford CAC and got
    the info.

    Recal #00S31

It is about the "Rear wheels have potential of
falling off due to poor wheel bearing clamp loads.
Listen for grinding or clunking noise from rear of
vehicle or wobbly rear wheels." *In particular the
left rear wheel!* (thanks pcleveland2 u nailed it)

Listed time to repair is "less than a 1/2 day"

It possibly can effect vehicles built-
    July '99-Apr 28 '00 @ Wayne (sedan and wagons)
    October 4 '99-May 6 '00 @ Hermasillo
    (so basically early-mid production models)

Note- some dealers have no clue about this. called
my usual dealer and they had not heard of this
    recall yet.....

    Hope this helps!

My Focus has a front brake problem. The brakes squeal when stopping- especially at slow speeds. I took the car back to the dealership and was told that my brake pads were worn down to 2/8. This car only had 12,000 miles on it. I was also told that I must be an aggressive driver. They shaved down the rotors and changed the brake pads for me. Within 1000 more miles, the car began shaking violently and still squealing when the brakes were applied. I then took the car to another dealer- they replaced the rotors and brake pads (again). The brakes are working again without shaking the whole car- but I am still dealing with the loud squealing noise that I originally took it in for! Any suggestions?
  • ericmearnestericmearnest Member Posts: 1
Whenever I shift from 1-2 or 2-3 the clutch makes a pretty bad squelling noise when it engages. Is anyone else having this problem? The dealer has replaced the entire clutch assembly once, and the noise is back. I need some help because the dealer cant seem to fix it, and the 1-800 Ford number wasnt any help.
  • rev4rev4 Member Posts: 38
Well, somebody driving a Ryder rental truck hit my station wagon and scraped the back bumper and punctured it and broke part of the left rear light! Oh for joy! Anybody have experience on replacement parts like a back bumper???
  • geoboygeoboy Member Posts: 1
beware water leaks on the focus - water comes in on the passenger side floor and wets the entire area under the padding. smal areas stay wet for weeks. mine has been in the shop five times, more than 10 days and no luck fixing it. ford had a technical service advisory out on this but i understand they only have about a 50% success rate fixing it.
  • hotx3hotx3 Member Posts: 71
I've seen two postings on this, and it just happened to me. The dealer recommends I drive it straight there for the fix ("kind of a safety issue"). He's already fixed one other Focus. The part takes one day to get. Are the replacement parts better? Is this going to turn into a recall? Did Ford have some kind of cost reduction program when they built these cars?
  • hotx3hotx3 Member Posts: 71
The dealer installed a new spring - took two hours, as they adjusted the spacing. Said the old spring broke because it was binding - too long for the connections. All you stick drivers - beware! Have it looked at when you get your wheel recall done.

I know everyone in this forum is complaining about their Focus, and all of the problems they are having, however, I bought my Focus sedan in May and still have not had one problem. I love my Focus and would most definetly buy one again.

I have a focus zts with automatic and do not have this problem with mine. Your problem could be a loose ground wire in the electrical system.
  • dm101dm101 Member Posts: 1
Leased 2001 SE Focus with sport package. While test driving several Focuses. All seemed to have a burning smell at idle. One dealer said it was break in new car smell. Two others said the same.
As I am getting ready to hit 1,000 miles the smell is still there but not as strong. Also cruise control stopped working just the other day.
Will be taking to dealership very soon for repair.
The leaking problems everyone is talking about is pretty scary. It has been to cold to work the a/c, hopefully they corrected this problem in the 2001 model. Anyone have the same smell or cruise problems. Thanks
  • cnollkampercnollkamper Member Posts: 43
YEs i know what you are talking about, My Zts Just atarted to lose that smell. It was mostly noticeable at a stop, or when you turn the vehicle off, and exit. Now at 7000 miles, it has pretty much cleared away. I always attributed it to the brakes, or new clutch break in....whatever it was i realized it was because of a new vehicle.

I have a question. I have an SE focus sedan with a 5 speed transmission. It runs fin except now in cold weather. I have trouble shifting from first into second gear( it resists going into second) for the first 15 minutes or so of driving in cold weather. After it warms up, the car is fine. What is causing this?
  • div2div2 Member Posts: 2,580
This is a chronic problem with Getrag transmissions in particular. Replacing the transmission oil with a synthetic equivalent usually cures the problem.
