Thanks you jmpage2 -- i think the Tech model with an added Gate option (they are just coming this week!) will suit me fine. I hope i got a fair deal --- think so. 42,960 +they will give me $12,000 for my 2005 MDX with very high miles. And I mean High! .... that saves me the trouble.

    any thoughts?
do yu think the taupe interior is nicer than the ebony (i am looking into a Shadow Grey with the ebony leather). But they only have the taupe coming in.

    what do you think?
  • jmpage2jmpage2 Member Posts: 268
The taupe interior looks great but gets marked up easily. You will also find that the leather gets scratched/scuffed more easily and that even your blue jeans will transfer onto the seams of the seats making them look blue stained.

All in all I like the way the taupe looks that we got on my wife's car but ebony is much easier to maintain.

The price on the car looks good at around $600 over invoice if no other hidden fees, etc, but your trade still seems low, have you checked what cars with similar mileage for are going for in independant sale? I would expect a 40% or better residual on a 3 year old MDX regardless of mileage which should put you at much higher than $12,000 unless the vehicle is also damaged or has other major problems.

Well, I just have to add that my car has $128,000 (yes, i do take the cake for high miles) I just think no matter what this car can take, I will have problems selling it privately. I don't plan to do the same amount of miles in the future. THis is the reason for my desire to do this deal. I also do plan to check out the Lexus RX 350 before signing on the dotted line ( think that it may be in the same price range and mileage may be better?) Would you say that I should keep my car - in spite of their offer, and sell it? do you think a car with some minor damage (rock thrown in threw window did cause a gash in the dash), let's see, also needs: front engine mount(broken), front and rear brakes soon, has some scratches on exterior, bumper scratches/gashes..... all in all not great shape. let me know.

    thanks,
    k

I can't tell you what your car is worth, I'm simply saying that I'm a bit skeptical that $12,000 is all you can get. Certainly it was a poor choice putting 40,000 miles a year on such an expensive vehicle.

You might find that putting $1,000 into the car might get you $3,000 extra resale on it to an independant buyer. It all comes down to what your time and effort are worth.

As far as the RX350, it's dated and due to be replaced at the end of the year. It has much poorer handling, acceleration and interior utility than the MDX. It gets 17/22 MPG compared to the 15/20 that the MDX is. That might amount to $100-$500 a year in gas savings depending on how much driving you do.

$12,000 may not be all that far off, depending on what you mean by "not in great shape." You're going to have a big hit with those miles in any case.

A base '05 MDX in "rough" condition in my zip code has a trade-in value of around $13,000. If you get it detailed and can get it up to Average condition, then you could push $15,000 for a trade-in. Add another couple of thousand for selling it yourself. Bump it up a bit more if you have the Touring or some options.

You can play with values using our Used Car Appraiser

well I will try to explain my car alittle better. and thanks for jumping in. It has the Nav. Touring package, Entertainment package and pretty much every extra I could think of (at the time since my x had to pay for it! he owed me more than the car cost and I got $1,000 cash as well!)
Got these additional options/features: the window visors, the moonroof visor, a large luggage holder for the roof rack, an interior bike rack, fancy rubber/heavy duty mats - and I think that may be it --had custom sheepskins made for the car as well.

So yeah, I think I have the higher end vehicle. But I also think that I have alot of cosmetic damage issues such as the paint/body defects --some gashes on the bumper from hitting something backing up (even with the camera on the Nav! and some dings and dents/scratches on the body. I have a nice green gray color -forget the name Cypress? and gray interior. New tires from Michelin - and now have maintenance costs of about 700.00 that need to be performed. Average wear and tear for all the miles I put on the car (not my choosing, I promise you).

any additional advice/comments? I don't mind selling it privately myself but not if I won't come out with more than this dealer has offered. (12,000).

One more piece of information in case you missed it - 128,000 miles on my 2005 car. When I entered it into the "Black Book Online: site it gave me a quote of: $13,135 - $16,825. Would you concur or am I just taking too great a risk to attempt to get more than 13,000 selling it privately? I cannot find a 2005 in the pages of used cars with high miles like mine - only 2003 or earlier years. I suppose I could just try to sell it first and then buy another car but then I would put many more miles on the MDX in the mean time. It's quite a dilemma!

You almost always do better selling it yourself, but lots of people don't want to hassle with it.

If there's a CarMax in your area, it would be interesting to see what they offer.

I did plug 128k in the mileage box when I figured TMV. And options generally don't have much of a pay back - they help the car sell faster but the depreciation hit on options is usually pretty high.

So, if your '05 really isn't in that rough of a condition, then I'll go along with Jmpage2's suggestion that the dealer is low-balling you.

Relax about the dilemma - rest assured that the dealer will be getting in another truckload of new Acuras next week ... and the week after. :shades:

Black Book Chicago - Milwaukee area, 4/1/08, lists the 2005 MDX Touring even in ROUGH condition at $19,525 plus $200 for the Ent and $600 for the Nav systems. As for replacing it, dealers like to sell what is on their lots and will tell you anything to that end. I walked from two dealers offers until I found a third who was willing to secure the color and equipment I wanted at the price I wanted to pay 3 years ago. The economy was good then. It is in the tank now.

What's that number for - dealer retail? That's probably high for a trade-in number.

I don't know about the Black Book, but if it's like Kelley, they list dealer asking prices. (link)

TMV reflects the price consumers are actually getting. Trade-in for rough one in Milwaukee (53201) is $15,872.

i just read and appreciate your note.

Today i went out of my way to quickly drive a 2009 Lexus 350 and although it is antiquated now, and will soon be replaced (in a year) - it rode fairly nice, and smooth. I've heard the gas mileage is almost the same (?) and noticed less road noise which because of all my driving is a concern to me.

I also wanted to know - The INVOICE amount--- ANYONE? -if you can divulge this information, where can I can find it -the "invoice" price is on a new car. I have been told by the dealer that this information is "readily available online" but i can only find the MSRP, not the invoice amount. I suppose one would have to pay a fee for this information.
He said -and I may be off by a bit because he was hard to understand (accent):
that his MDX with the added option of Power Rear Gate has an invoice of $40,500 or 40,900 (had trouble, and he wasn't thrilled about discussing it --- "when i buy a new suit no one asks what the cost was to make it!")
I am wondering what their cost is, and although I am entitled to find out - not sure where --

I was told the Lexus - including Navi had invoice of $ of 41,000+.and they would take 42,400 approx.for their car Again - I have a car to sell and that will change it up.

What kind of offers does Carmax give, are they always generally higher than the dealer's?

    Thank you,
    K

ps. I have to fix my car's Front Engine Mount (the sides are just loose, the front engine mount broken). They also recommended a brake replacement for the front (4mil or 85%) and backs soon as well. Aside from changing the brake fluid (brake fluid flush) I thought I should hold off on everything until I decide what to do ----would you just go ahead fix the engine mount in the meantime --- you're sorry you answered me now - huh? LOL....

You can get invoice and MSRP on all cars both here at edmunds.com as well as at consumer guide (here http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/)

Looks like the only invoice pricing we have for an '09 Lexus are the RX 350 models. link

And along about August the 2010's will come out, and in November they'll announce the 2011 models. Model year creep is in full force.

I was wondering if the Sport model in Comfort mode will make a difference. From what I hear, the sport model makes the ride stiffer in sport mode, but it's COMFORT mode is the same as the MDX non sport model. Can anyone offer opinions?
  • vaughn4vaughn4 Member Posts: 106
The noise is coming from your front lower control arms - Unfortunately it will get worse over time. There is no fix for it. I had the same problem and got rid of my 07 MDX for this and other reasons. I understand the 08's have the same problem.

They replaced the front suspension on mine and the noise stopped for 2 months but came back even worse. It gets to the point that the front end will make cracking noises every time you stop, accelerate or turn the steering wheel. It is also quite embarrassing when people comment and ask what the cracking noises are.

    Hi, all.

We just took delivery of our 2008 MDX with tech. We are coming from a 2005 Murano. Wow! What a difference! Question: with the Murano, you can set the power front seat so that when you open the door, it moves back a bit to help getting in. Does the MDX have this function?
  • hemorsehemorse Member Posts: 34
Yoy can set the rear view side mirrors. the steering wheel height and location, and seat, AFTER you insert the key that was programmed for that specific person. When you shut the engine, the steering wheel will retract. I have not experienced the seat moving backwards.

Question for those that own a 2008 MDX...

What do you think of the body side molding? Does it really protect against door dings?

Does anyone have the rear sensors installed with the Nav? Does it help catch those instances in which a person or object move across the rear of your MDX and can't be caught in time by the rearview camera?
  • hemorsehemorse Member Posts: 34
I have nav with rear camera and still installed rear sensors. I wouldn't be without them. Camera is OK, but things are way our of proportion. There is no ability to judge distance. The sensors work great in conjunction with the camera. For me, it is a must. Now, I am still trying to find a source for folding electric side mirrors. Once I do that, I'll be happy!
  • josephd05josephd05 Member Posts: 46
For best protection, get the BSM AND Sport running boards. You can't protect against every car, but they will catch a percentage of would be dings. Also, the sport running boards look cool and act as giant mud flaps. Most rocks, rock salt, mud, etc. get caught on the boards instead of your side panels.

As far as the camera goes, it works great, but you have to use common sense. I had one in my 4 runner, and you will NEVER hit an object if you are careful. You have to realize that the objects do appear further away, this is just plain common sense. You're not suppose to slam on the accellerator and only look at the camera, just take it slow. There are blind spots on the rear corners, but the camera still works great. the sensors are good too, but I hear they beep when you're 6 inches away.
  • upstatedocupstatedoc Member Posts: 710
My '04 MDX was a ding magnet. Finally had the BSM put on (it took dealership 3 tries, bad glue) and we have been ding free ever since. Now our '07 MDX hasn't accumulated the dings for unknown reasons (no BSM).

As for the backup camera, it takes too long to "boot up" for my taste, I would rather see sensors. :shades:
  • josephd05josephd05 Member Posts: 46
Takes a few seconds...lol. Geez some folks are impatient.
  • upstatedocupstatedoc Member Posts: 710
Well, it's not only slow, but if it's bright out and the screen hasn't been "on" for several hours, the picture is very washed out.
  • josephd05josephd05 Member Posts: 46
I don't see that on mine, but I have seen that on my friends 05 MDX.
  • hodog16hodog16 Member Posts: 53
Went to test drive an 08 MDX today and loved it. Wife wasn't as keen though due to the smallish 3rd row. Planning on keeping this car if I buy it for a good while (5+ years), so out of curiosity, has anybody had any success putting in a booster seat in the 3rd row? Thanks for any help.
  • josephd05josephd05 Member Posts: 46
Not sure if you are aware, but you can adjust the brightness of the camera. While in reverse, turn the main dial clock wise. I think the screen is not only bright, but the ability to see in the dark is fantastic.

i know it gets good ratings but all suvs do nowadays. does anyone have any real proof it's safe? i like it's looks but am a little skeptical.

does anyone have any real proof it's safe?

What, exactly, would constitute "real proof?" For that matter, what would you regard as safe?

Let's see -- Five Stars on all NHTSA tests -- AOL give it all stars in like 20 categories.

You would really have to try to have to try to get the thing do something other than you intended with the great handling, brakes, etc. and even then there is an airbag for every cubic inch or the interior.

I researched it before I bought and couldn't find another vehicle at any price that was safer.

After my answer, a question -- It seems common knowledge that the MDX is very safe. Why do you ask?
  • karens2008karens2008 Member Posts: 26
where exactly his that dial for adjusting the rear view camera? don't know about it yet.

    thanks,
  • upstatedocupstatedoc Member Posts: 710
The "Interface dial" is directly in the middle of the center display.
  • njvikenjvike Member Posts: 56
Yes. Unfortunately, I have that issue too. The problem is that a short test drive would not reveal there's an issue. It took me about a 1/2 hour to notice this but this is when I already had purchased the vehicle. This also makes my hip (has arthritis) worse. I hope that footrest can be removed.

    By-the-way, I'm 6' 2" if it makes a difference.

I have tried several different seating positions and it doesn't help.
