see if this article helps you with your winter driving decision: http://www.caranddriver.com/xp/Caranddriver/features/1999/May/199905_feature_whatp.xml

I went back and re-read your post about the steering wheel vibration and clunk noise from the rear end. I have not experienced those or any other problems on test drives or with either 330xi or 325xi wagon. I'd guess that someone mis-treated the demonstrator before you drove it.

I spoke to BMWNA on Monday and they told me that the ship with my car is estimated to arrive in port in NJ on the 24th. I think your's and mine are on the same boat from SA. Have you contacted BMWNA this week and heard anything diff.??
  • jasonkureejiijasonkureejii Member Posts: 210
Damn!!! I talked to the rep on Monday, and she told me that it may not have arrived at the port yet, that is, it still may be on the train. I don't think it's on your ship, but I'll call again. BTW, thanks for giving me an update on port-to-port time...about 3 weeks, no? That's actually what I'd expect from SA. I don't think I'll be able to get my car during the first week of July....actually, my dealer gave me a week 30 ETA, I think...last week in July, so that may still be the case. We'll see. Otherwise, glad yours made it on the boat, man!

A while back, someone had posted that the recommended wheel locks are the ones's "without the keys" (the cheaper ones). Does anybody know why that is the case and what is the basic difference between wheel locks with and without keys?
    Thanks in advance.

When is the cutoff point? I have a November build 2000 328i. I'd love some visual indication that the car is locked. If I can't use the clown nose, can I have the parking lights flash?

What kind of "noise" were you referring to?

I have a manual 330xi and the only noises I've heard are the occasional chime somewhere from the dashboard(at least that's what I think it's coming from) right after I turn on the engine and also a clunking noise whenever my gear shifting from the 1st to 2nd is not that smooth. When it's kind of smooth, I don't get that clunking noise.

I might be wrong, but I don't think any of the above noises is any indication that something's wrong with the car.

In regards to build location. I did not buying a BMW because it is built in Germany. I bought it because it is the best engineered and best driving car in the world regardless of where it is assembled! BMW has been building cars in S.A. for years. My previous cars were a '00 Z3 built in So. Carolina and a '98 Mitsu Diamante built in Australia!!. The build quality of both was excellent. Actually the Diamante built in Australia was one of the best built cars I have ever owned. That includes Hondas, Acuras, Volvo's and the occasional American car. Don't worry, be happy and I hope the wait goes by fast. It will be worth it!
BTW: I am looking at the sticker from my car right now. As far as parts content goes it lists Major source of forgien parts content: Germany 80%
    U.S./Canadian parts content: 5%
    Engine parts: Germany
    Transmission parts: Germany
Final Assembly point: rosslynn, S. Africa

There was a previous discussion thread about how leasing a 330 was cheaper than the 325 because of higher residual values. As for deals in the Chicago area, it might be tough to get a great deal here. I, personally, didn't get much off because I bought a wagon which is in very low supply in the midwest (confirmed by Eurobuyers). However, I still got a decent discount while others have actually paid MSRP. Other have gone to Indiana to get a great deal on their car.

I believe that the armrest is standard in all 330's, where it's an option on the 325.

As far as AWD, the BMW system's a beauty.

About MSRP and BMW, I believe that the markup from Invoice to MSRP is very low, about 10-11%, in the 3 series, with no dealer holdback. My markup ended up at about 7.5% from invoice. They get extra commision based upon service/customer feedback.

Good luck on your lease. It's a great car!

uge123 - congrats on your new baby - if it sounds like you are in heaven, then you must be in heaven. I love the looks of the wagon and I've also heard that it handles great because wagons in general tend to have a very good weight distribution. This is my kind of family car!! Enjoy it.

twoof1 - "more linear power band" - you summed it up very well. Even after a month in my 325i, I still love the nice, progressive, smooth acceleration. You'll love it once you get past 4,500 RPM's. It's an incredible feeling flooring it at 3,000 RPM's and holding it there all the way to 6,000. It's like wow, what an incessant rush; and of course, it's all smooth and progressive. Oh, the sound...

fzhang875576 - I doubt that the '02 model will be packed with a lot more standard options than the mid-year models. The 325i's MSRP that I bought in March was $1,200 less than the fall model's. And of course, you know that it would be hard to get a good deal on the '02 model in the first few months after they come out.

Blinking clown nose: it seems like a lot of hassle trying to save $400 on the alarm. Just reminding you that on top of everything, the alarm comes with a motion detector and a tilt censor, both of which can be selectively de-activated by pressing the middle button on your key whenever you'd like to. Well worth the money, especially to protect a 35K car.

stgreen - "do those 17" ALL SEASON tires really handle in snow..." Don't be ridiculous - I live in Boston and I typically drive my FWD Jetta 20-25 mph faster than most cars with all-season tires in deep snow. AWD will give you much better traction than that. As far as rim diameter, you can only fit 17" rims over the 330's brakes but again, you should never have to change tires with the XI. BTW, the rim diameter (15, 16, 17) has absolutely no impact over handling in snow. It's the tire width, height, and especially compound and tread.

No noise problems of any kind in my 325i except for a barely audible seat belt pretensioner clicking noise, which I've heard on one occasion weeks ago.

eddie2224 - if you have been following this board and still need convincing, then I'm afraid we can't help you more than that. Just get the car - it is inspiring to drive like no other car in a wide price range proximity. As far as the lease deals, BMWNA has been promoting the 330i lease and I don't think they have any promotions going on the 330xi. M-B is list-or-walk unless they are phasing out a model like the current E series. One of my colleagues is picking up an E320 tonight and she got over 2 grand off b/c they are replacing the model. You couldn't get a dealer to move off MSRP on the C class. With the 3-series, typical deals are going for $1,500-2,000 over invoice (MACO included).

burrsr - I also have mixed feelings about the A6. I can say even after all these years in production that I really like the shape of the A4 but I never fully warmed up to the A6. I like it from certain angles but overall, the rear seems a little too avant-garde for my taste. The new A4's exterior is supposed to be a more aggressive downsized A6 - somehow I like it better than the A6 on the pictures that I have seen.

wheel locks - the non-key type is better b/c dirt and sand tends to get into the key type and jam it sometimes. It is not very likely it will happen but if it does when you get a flat, it would be a royal pain.

Geez, I wrote away this morning...It takes my thoughts away from the Sixers' miserable showing last night although I suspect guru is not done with us yet :o)

    Stgreen,

I drive a 328i (RWD only) with the standard issue 205 width all-season tires. This year we had a pretty good winter (for northern NJ) with several 8"+ snow falls. I found that the only time traction seemed marginal was when driving up the fairly steep hill that I live on during a heavy sleet/snow storm. In my case, not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, I succumbed to the temptation to switch off the DSC while driving up said hill in said storm. Ooops! I have pretty good reflexes and I was barely able to catch the car when the back end snapped around and headed for the ditch. I suspect that either of the "xi" cars with the standard issue all-season tires will do just fine.

As for the wheel size, it is irrelevant, 15, 16, 17 or even 18 makes no difference. What DOES make the difference is the section width. A width of 205 is pretty good, 225 is marginal and 245 equipped cars should be kept in the garage while the heavy stuff is on the roads (unless you can find a BIG empty parking lot ;-) that is).

    Eddie2224,

I think you answered your own question, depending on the leasing company; the 330i and 330xi have higher residuals when compared to the 325 models. In many cases, that difference is enough the make the 330 models cheaper to lease than the 325s.

    Burrsr,

According to the Audi web site the 0-60 numbers are as follows:
    6.0 sec -- Audi A6 2.7T -- 6-Speed Manual -- 3759 lbs.
    6.6 sec -- Audi A6 2.7T -- 5-Speed Tiptronic -- 3836 lbs.
    6.7 sec -- Audi A6 4.2 -- 5-Speed Tiptronic -- 4024 lbs.

    Best Regards,
    Shipo

    Guys,

Thanks for the help. I think I am pretty set to go with the 3-Series. I know it sounds stupid, but those movies that BMW has running on its web site really are cool. Anyway, I am going to do some comparison shopping this weekend at a M-B "Powerdrive" event. After that, I will plow into the financing end of things. I am hoping that my local BMW dealers are ready to bargain or that I can find something on the lot that is good to bargain with. By the way, what is meant by "MACO included"? I can't figure it out.

Boy, getting the 330xi would really be incredible if the lease numbers work out.

    Thanks again.
  • jasonkureejiijasonkureejii Member Posts: 210
Thanks for the reassurance. I think the only thing I have to worry about is the lengthier transport from SA to US, I guess. Hope your model is more than you expected!
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
MACO is "Marketing and advertitsing cost overhead" or something like that. Basically, it is a legitimate fee that dealers are charged by BMWNA and they typically pass it directly to the consumer. So when a dealer tells you, say $1,500 over invoice, make sure that includes the MACO and ANY other fees (Training fee comes to mind) that the dealer may charge you. When all is said and done and the dealer is filling in the Purchase Order form, make sure their drive-off price reflects the price over invoice that they quoted.

Good luck, glad to hear that you're getting this exciting car on your third try. Let us know if you have any questions - this board is very good about helping converts like you. I mean car converts, we don't do religion stuff just yet :o)
  • uge123uge123 Member Posts: 100
Braveheart, others: Thanks everybody! I AM in heaven. I can't wait until this baby breaks in. It's joy to drive now, although it IS difficult to keep it under speed limit on any road as it's so smooth that I just don't realize I'm speeding until it's too late.

Eddie: The dealers I worked with here in the Chicago area never mentioned MACO nor is it listed on a price work sheet. I just picked up my car and it wasn't listed as a separate item. Therefore, it must be built into the price I paid. My price worksheet only included Price, Trade in, Tax, title/license, Cook County fee (EVERY car sold to a Cook county resident comes with this), and Downpayment.

Personally, I recommend Fields, Patrick, or Laurel BMW. Your milage may vary. Good luck!

MACO: Just how much IS MACO?

Locks: I just talked to the parts dept at my dealer, he also recommended the cheaper keyless locks ($30) because they don't jam, work just as well, come with two tirewrench attachments (one to store, one to keep with you), and are cheaper. The keyed ones ($70) give you four keys to keep safe and they might get filled with grit. Not fun.

    On a strange note...

As a Mac User, computing is not just a requirement of the modern age, but our choice of operating system is a religion, with Jobs as the high priest...or so many pundits state.

I've noticed a certain similarity in the excitement and dedication BMW owners have to Mac Users on the BBS's. For both groups, the extra price (and sometimes slightly statistics) is worth the elegance of the product. And both groups seem to defend their positions and their choice to their dying breath. I don't see this kind of excitement or "religion" anywhere else.

    I hope I didn't offend anyone.

    Any comments?

Shipo answered burrs question on the V8. Again, Audi have "updated" their web site to show a quicker 0-60 than originally stated. While the V8 has 50 more hp, it only come in an automatic while to 2.7 has a 6 speed available (that's why I noted next to the car the gearbox). It does say alot about power and why it's not quite as straight forward as you'd think. Who'd would've guessed that the one with 50 more hp is 0.1 slower ?! The V8 certainly feels like to quick car from the drivers seat.

rubencahn - you will have no problems getting your theft deterrent "clown nose" switched on.

I agree that both groups are extremely enthusiastic and devoted. But unlike Apple, BMW is far from being a dying breed. It is actually growing faster than most other manufacturers. And you get all kinds of software that work with it :o) I like the Mac's image and the freedom/creativeness that it stands for. Heck, I even like Steve Jobs as a person a lot, controversial as he is. He's charismatic, passionate about what he does, and a believer (don't ask what in). But somehow the Macs seem to be a lot more popular with artistic people (publishers, designers, even architects) and somehow I think those people like the Beetle a lot more than the BMW.

I work in the printing industry so I work with Graphic designers and Ad agencies all day long. 99.9% of them are Mac based and they swear by it. They tend to freak a little bit when I tell them that I Pre-Flight all of their files on my PC!!
They are also great for home use if you want an easy to learn system but may be somewhat limited in terms of general release software availability.

Hi - I have been a faithful lurker over the past 3 months as I have gone from buyer to owner. Three weeks ago I picked up my 325 Sapphire Black with stick and premium at the Performance Center in South Carolina. Naturally, I am supremely happy. Except.... I had my car detailed for the first time this past weekend and the guy I have been going to for years now told me that there were "acid rain" spots on the hood of the car that would not come out with normal wash and wax. He suggested I contact the dealer and have them buffed out. Considering I have had the car less than one month this seems extreme. However, he is right there are rain spots (it's been pretty rainy the last couple of weeks) that I can't budge. I hate to think that this is just going to get worse? Is there a specific product people recommend or is there something inherently wrong with the paint job? I did not purchase any after market clear coats and none were offered by the dealer.

    Thanks.

I like Phil Jackson too. I liked the Bulls a lot when they were great - Phil's undisputedly a great coach. The Lakers are OK - for a big city team with a lot of tradition, they are not too shabby. One team that I can't stand and that I always cheer against is the Knicks - the single most obnoxious, annoying, overrated, underskilled team of players with an attitude. When my wife used to leave in New York (Upper East side) and I was visiting when there was a game on TV, you could hear my cheers over the curses from every window nearby when they scored against the Knicks. Although I live on the East Coast, I'd be cheering for the Lakers against the Knicks. Kobe is not so bad for a young kid - what he is - 22? At any rate, I didn't even think there was going to be a contest at all with the Lakers taking 16 games in a row before the finals. I got my hopes high after the first game but it's all over now - no-one's ever come back from a 3:1 deficit. Will have to wait till next year.
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
And on top of everything, you drive stick? That was my only requirement for a wife and I had trouble finding mine :o)

All this acid rain stuff sounds like a bunch of BS and I wouldn't give it a second thought. This guy may be trying to rip you off (hmm, a lady in a brand new shiny Bimmer). It doesn't matter how many years you've been going there. Just go to a different place and ask them to wax the car unless you want to do it yourself. Honestly, I don't even know why you people wax the car so soon. Every time I've washed the car, the water beads, which tells me that it does not need waxing. I would not do anything more than wax the car maybe a couple of times a year tops.

Mac computers are way overpriced, IMO.
I also find it hard to believe that Macs are more stable than Windows-based comps as some have claimed. Almost half the computers at where I work are Macs and they crash all the time.

"...wax the car maybe a couple of times a year tops" - I am not a detailing expert, especially when it comes to waxing cars, which I do myself every now and then, maybe every other month. However, I'm surprised about your statement. Your reasoning refers to the lifetime of the car or just the first year or so? I'm not saying your wrong on this...just wanted some clarification. How long will the clear coat last on the car? Can you actually overwax a car, and what are the consequences...can it ruin or shorten the life of the clear coat?
  • dhanleydhanley Member Posts: 1,531
I tried zaino myself, and i think it's no more effective than a normal wax--just overpriced. part of the special part of it is that they make you do all these steps and put on multiple layers. A $3 can of cleaner wax from walmart will do just as well.

You CAN overwax a car, but you'd have to try, and you'd have to do a bad job--maybe not get the car clean enough, and be rubbing dirt into the paint. That would wear down the paint over time.

Hi all, first time on any message board, pardon my errors on edicate. I am in the fortunate position to have my company provide me with a car, any car. I chose an BMW 325i (steel blue, SP, CD, split rear seats. My problem is I cannot find a deal in AZ. Both dealers in PHX act like they are a Saturn dealership. Any help will be appreciated! I am willing to go to CA to get one if the price is right. My offer has been $1500 over invoice.

    Thanks in advance!
  • mmcbride1mmcbride1 Member Posts: 861
If your company is paying, why fight it? Just get the best deal you can and enjoy your car.
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
Honestly, I've never bothered to learn enough about waxing and clearcoats and types of soaps and all that. I am more of the road warrior type (24K miles a year) and don't worry much about cosmetics. Not to mention that to me, performance comes first and foremost. I keep my car clean - rarely leave bird dropping on it; wash it once every couple of weeks; keep the interior very clean; you'll never find anything rolling on the floor in my car or anything that's not supposed to be inside or any dust on the dash at all. I wax the exterior "a couple of times a year tops" meaning twice every year. Typically once in the fall and once in the spring. I don't believe you'll hurt the car even if you waxed it every day - it's just a waste of time doing it more often than twice every year, IMO. They use something like 17 layers of primer, paint, and clearcoat on most luxury German cars. By buying the car, you've already paid enough so you don't have to worry about maintaining the exterior too often. I want to enjoy the car but have a life too. See, even if the car inevitably gets scratches and the paint fades a little, I can always pay a couple of hundred dollars and have it buffed and detailed in a few years. It works for me...

  • burrsrburrsr Member Posts: 255
Rough position to be in -- basically a FREE BMW! You said "any car" -- certainly there must be SOME parameters limiting your choice -- otherwise, why not opt for a new M-B 600SL?

I would assume that the company will likely be leasing the car (cash flow, tax benefits, etc.). If this is correct, the 330i is a more attractive leased vehicle. Due to its higher residual and (assuming BMW FS is still supporting) manufacturer-supported money factor, the 330i can be had for about the same overall cash outlay as a 325i. Some food for thought...
  • mmcbride1mmcbride1 Member Posts: 861

    Brave,

Yeah, I'm with you on waxing. Although I like to do all the detailing myself...in fact, I do my girlfriends Altima all the time without a gripe, waxing can be murder in this Plano, TX heat, man! I guess I'll just detail the car as I've detailed my current and previous ones, but drive it like no other! I just thought maybe you knew something about the clear coat that left you satisfied with waxing only twice a year...

    Titanium325,

That was me about the SA built models....and OK, OK, OK, I'm not worried....thanks for the reply however....
  • brave1heartbrave1heart Member Posts: 2,698
Same here - the 325i is the best all-around car for this type of driving. Make sure to get the sport package - you'll need those seats for your long trips.

DO is what - Distribution Officer, Director of Operations?

The going rate is about $1,500-2,000 over invoice - call dealerships outside of your area if the best price you're getting is MSRP.

Maybe he caught me on the web???
  • burrsrburrsr Member Posts: 255
    What's a DO?

Also, you CAN lease. I know folks in sales who accumulate tons of annual mileage and lease because they can essentially write off all business miles (say it's 80/20 busn/personal -- prorate your annual lease outlays by 80% and deduct that amount come tax time). Your lease payments increase according to the mileage (increased depreciation), but you'll more than make up for it on April 15. Of course, this may vary depending on company fiscal policies, etc. Typically, though, it's better for an individual in this type of situation.

OK, if you prefer BMWs, why not an M5? Or a 750iL? You still have not alluded to any decision parameters.

Good point on the Knicks. I went to college on the East Coast and the Knicks were the team to hate for their attitude more than anything else if you weren't from NYC. NYC fans have to be some of the most brutal in the world. One of my friends from NYC was telling me that the fans there have no mercy on their own teams. If the team's doing badly, they have nothing against booing their own. Yikes. Things just don't work that way in Chicago. Then again...all our teams suck right now (except the Fire and the Wolves...who's league shut down). Don't talk to me about baseball. The real question is...can either team continue their winning records the whole season?

My wife has no problem driving a manual car. Of course, I had to teach her...but she was a natural. In fact, when I busted my left knee three years ago, she drove my Integra 5spd for three months while I was healing. She didn't want to give it up at the end because it outhandled her large Galant Sigma. I wonder if she'll give my keys back to me if we swapped my 325 with her Accord for three months. Probably not.

nice pun on the DO/OD though.

AZ: I think you have already thrown up some contradictions:

    1. As a couple of posts mentioned, if its "any" car and you prefer the BMW, why not go for a 750IL Protection model?!!
    2. For a person who is in such a commanding position as to be offered a free luxury car as a perk, you seem rather uncomfortable being on the web even for a few minutes (lest big brother get upset!!) Doesn't make sense.

uge123 - Is Stoichkov still the star of the Chicago Fire? He's still playing there, no?

veekay1 - I think AZ makes perfect sense. ANY car does not mean that he has to splurge and get a 750IL Protection - it's already very generous of his boss to let him buy a German luxury car at company expense. Even profitable companies (actually especially those) need to keep their expenses in check. As far as his web surfing, it's very typical for executives to be much busier than you and me. You know what Bob Dylan says: "You may be the devil and you may be the Lord but you're gonna have to serve somebody". Especially if you're getting paid big bucks.
