Well I ordered a set of the Firehawks this morning. Everyone I talked to said the same thing. Just keep them inside out of the sun and stack them like donuts they will last for years. Plus I'm thinking I used to have a Griffith Series 200 GT that was garage kept and only used on weekends. I didn't have any tire self distruct problems with those tires and they were mounted. The guy at Tirerack suggested if I wanted I could store them in trash bags. Every place I checked I was quoted $160. So I figure @ $69 a couple of years from now when it's time to replace the Bridgestones I'll be enthused I don't have to go out and spend $700. Thanks to everyone who responded on hear with their comments. One more question. What are you guys who are running the Bridgestones on 2002 V8 Sports putting in as air pressure? Door jam says 30lbs and tire says 44 max. Usually in that situation I would be trying something around 35.
I actually preferred the Firehawks over the Bridgestones, the ride seemed smoother. I'm running them at 30 PSI. I asked the same question about what pressure everyone is useing in there 17's in Suspension/Wheels/Tires on the llsoc site, you might want to check it out.
could someone post an alternative source for parts such as filters etc. Just went to my dealer for an oil filter and the cabin filter: $12.89 and $31.71!!! respectively. I have an older 911 and can tell you Porsche parts aren't this expensive even at the dealer. Thanks
Try our friend Torrie at fordpartsnetwork.com. His service is excellent and prices are quite a bit less than the dealer. I've bought body and trim parts from him. You can buy a single screw or washer if that's what you need. I haven't looked at filters yet as I have the service package that came with the car. Good luck.
I'm still trying to find out where the on board GPS receiver box is located. No one seems to know and people at Lincoln never get back to me. If anybody has any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks.
As best I can tell from reading the LS specs, there is not GPS receiver option available on the LS, and so there is no GPS receiver. Are you maybe referring to the cell phone option that comes with it?
GPS technology IS included in the new Vehicle Communications System, optional in the '02 LS. This is the Sprint PCS phone system that, among other things, allows you to call the Lincoln Response Center to get directions.
You can also call for help if you have a flat, for example, & LRC will send someone to your location. The system automatically calls the Response Center if your airbags deploy; the Response Center can use the GPS to locate your vehicle and send help.
(There's no onboard factory nav system available in the U.S. in conjunction with the VCS, though.)
rgnmstr: Lincoln may not tell you where the GPS is for liability reasons. Your best bet might be to get the shop manuals. You'll probably need them anyway if you plan to try to tap into the system.
You should still run 30 +/- a few psi regardless of brand. You might want to adjust a couple of pounds either direction based on personal preference but 35 sounds a bit high unless you're planning to do 140 mph or carry cement bags in the trunk. If overinflated the tread won't wear evenly and the ride would be bone-jarring. Max psi just tells you how much the tire can stand. On my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S max psi is 51! But I'm still running 30. Could probably go up to 32 for better handling but ride quality would suffer slightly.
I wasn't confusing a GPS with Homelink. As someone else posted the 2002 has as part of the communication package an onboard GPS unit that gives your position via the telephone to either the SOS people or the direction/help people. I just want to get a look at the black box to see if there are any output jacks that could be used to feed a laptop that's running a navagation program. The Jag S Type probably uses the same unit to feed the in dash display. Knowing the cost saving measures that are used in the manufacturing of cars I would bet the same unit is in both cars which would mean it's just sitting there ready to be taken advantage of. Personally I don't know why Lincoln just didn't offer some type of flip down navagation screen as an option.
Does Lincoln offer mud flaps through an accessory catalog for the LS? Seems to me someone posted about this before. Gotta do something about the break dust. :-) Also is anyone using a bra and if so are they easly removed. I'm thinking about getting one for the long rides. Also someone posted they mess up the paint. Jeeeeeze I thought they were supposed to save the paint. Or do they do nasty things when you leave them on forever? Thanks, Mike
Get the mudflaps at your local dealer or order from fordpartsnetwork.com. I think they're around $40 a pair. Easy to install but you will have to remove the rear tires.
The problem with Bras is they trap moisture. Using them only for trips shouldn't be too much of a problem, especially if it stays dry.
Wax your wheels - it will help keep the brake dust from sticking.
gkarg, I assume the mass air flow sensor is about the same size as the old one so you can't tell if it's the same part as the old one. Brian from LLSOC suggested saving the $145 and just cutting holes in your old airbox, but if the new box comes with a new larger or better mass air flow sensor it might be worth the extra $$$ to buy the factory version. Also, factory appearance would be maintained in case you ever need to sell your car. I doubt most potential buyers would know anything about the differences, although word is getting out about this board and the wealth of information on the LLSOC web site. LLSOC membership was the best $35 I've spent in a long time. Does anyone know or care to speculate if Lincoln will stay with the 2002 airbox on the 2003 with it's higher displacement? If it comes with even better airflow the 2003 parts might be worth waiting for. Brian, do you have any inside info for us on this?
About $40 will get you all four. Well worth it. Very unobtrusive and do wonders to keep the lower body clean.
re tire pressure: My Firehawks, always at 30 psi, are slightly more worn in the center than near the edges. At the Mania2 happy hour an engineer told me that was typical of the rear tires of high performance RWD cars. Mine get rotated every 5k so all four are worn like that. Seems that higher pressures would increase that sort of wear. FWIW.
Thanks for the tips on the mud guards and bras. I wanted something that was unobtrusive yet would keep the break dust off the bottom of a silver car. By the way who sells the best value bras? Also thanks for the thoughts on tire pressure. Now if only someone could come up with the secret place the GPS is located.
Had a strange thing happen today. Started the car and fan for climate control went into high gear. When I pressed "off" button, nothing happened. When I went into "auto" mode, fan speed decreased, but still loud. Pressing fan switch to lower fan speed did little. I turned car off and let it sit, then tried again with same results.
I don't remember reading of a similar problem on this bosrd, so thought I'd post. The dealer has it and I'll post exact nature of problem and fix when I get the car back. BTW - 2000 6M with 2/00 build date.
The Lincoln LS won the award of course, and now the Ford Thunderbird has also been named Motor Trend Magazine Car of the Year. T-Bird has won this award for an unprecedented fourth time.
We played with two of them at Wixom Mania II, wonpder. If you like the photos you will like the option in person. Most who viewed the LSE, including me, were not impressed with either the rear spoiler or the $2500 price tag for an LS that will not go any faster.
IIRC the option will be a limited offering and will be shipping by the end of the year. For more info go to the LLSOC web site.
I have had my LS four times to correct an annoying loud click when the steering wheel is turned at low speeds. They have replaced a bearing twice and the entire steering column. It goes away for a week and comes back. Any help out there?
I have to agree get the Mud Guards, they are great. Really keep the sides clean. I think they look good on the car. Only caveat is when going over bumps or agressive driving the rear one scrape a little. The roads here in dallas are not even and dip alot so my rears are worn from the bottom. You can't tell though. unless if you look real close. I think everyone on the road should have mud guards.
Regarding bras I have had three. One on my Honda (Le Bra---Yuck---Is cheap and looks cheap), (Ford Factory bra for my 94 Capri---Looks Great, Paid 120 bucks and scuffed the hood of the paint---Did not have air foils to keep it down and thus flapped), and One from Covercraft for my Lincoln LS (WOW!). The Covercraft one is GREAT!, Costs about $75 Dollars Has Airfoils, Covers the Fog/Driving Lights with a Mesh. I have had mine for 1.5 years and no scuffs on Hood and No Flapping. Real Quality Product. Go to www.covercraft.com My ex-GF Bought one from them also for her Civic and liked it..
Only Better alternatve to Covercraft is probably any of the CLEAR BRA's that go on Permanently on your CAR. This way you don't have to take it on or Off. Andy on this board has had real good luck with them. Looking at about 250+ install for this.
Now if you have a Silver Frost SPORT LS with Tinted Windows, With the Clean Super Silver Rims, and Meguired Endurance Dressed Tires and and A Black Covercraft Bra, it really makes it look mean. The guy that Valets my car at a club here in Dallas Said my ride look tight with the bra on. I have to agree, especially when my car is right up front when I leave the club... Silver and black what a lovely combination. Priceless........ I just had to look at my Silver LS Wallpaper on my desktop right now...Exactly like my car... You can download it from the Lincoln Website. If you have an Silver LS8 Sport and that way you don't look ridicoulus at the office staring outside your window all the time;)
The 2003 airbox won't fit on the 2002 and older models. Highly doubtful that the mass air flow sensor is any bigger than the older one. The restriction in the stock air system is in the airbox and the throttle body more so than the sensor.
Airwolf, Thanks for the info. I already e-mailed Covercraft to ask if they have a dealer in Maryland. One more question. How much of a hassel is it to put the bra on and take it off. I want to be able to use it for the long hiwghway rides but not leave it on all the time as to not mess up the paint.
The LLSOC Discussion board is under a denial-of-service attack that hacked into the forums. I am currently trying to stop the attack but I don't know the damage that has been caused on the forum. I'll keep everyone posted.
I opened up my airbox on Saturday. Pretty simple process, just drilled a hole and got the ole jigsaw out to cut it open.
After I had pulled it out, I notice that the new hole now faces directly at a hole in the sheetmetal below it that will allow fresh air in. At first I was concerned about trying to use something to block the engine heat, but while investigating it, I noticed that the stock snorkel, when installeed, creates a wall between the new hole and the engine.
Now, as far as performance is concerned. The first couple of days I was pretty disappointed. All I was getting was a growl from the front and no extra feel. Actually, the throttle response almost felt delayed, but I didn't reset the computer by pulling the battery cable after the mod.
By yesterday, however, whohoo!, what a difference (and I even noticed it a little the day before). The slow throttle response just got a whole lot quicker than even before the mods. The growl that was there is now almost not noticable, but now it is just a bit of a purr that blends in perfectly with the sound of the engine. For an hour of my time, it was well worth it (and not worth buying the new airbox). Seat of the pants feel is quite a bit better. My wife even noticed the difference. Should have tried it sooner.

Memory is shaky, we heard & saw so much at Wixom, but I thought the LSE was due to come out early in '02, maybe Feb. Somebody with better memory, help us out here.
rgnmstr, interesting you mention the round driving lights. A lot of us who saw the car liked the looks of them but wondered if they'd be as effective lighting up the sides of the road as the current rectangular lights. Also IIRC, the LSE body kit will be available aftermarket, but it won't be cheap.

A happy & peaceful Thanksgiving to all. Please remember our people close to danger & far from home in your prayers.
I just returned from the San Francisco Auto show today and visited the Lincoln display.
Much to my delight, sitting on a podium by itself was a silver LSE. This car looks great, monochomatic paint, two tone "17 wheeels, quad exhaust and certain euro body effects.
Product specialist at the display told me that the car would available December 5th, not sure if car would be at dealers on that day or if orders would be taken for it on that day. He seemed a bit confused and told me to check with my dealer (who probably would'nt know anyway).

Thanks for all the info on the 2002 & 2003 airboxs. I don't want to know anything that would violate Lincoln's confidentiality agreement from those of you who were able to attend mania II. Just knowing that the 2003 airbox won't fit my 2000 helps enough. I'm leaning toward just cutting my existing box and saving the $$$, but I want to take the old one out and look first. I'll be consulting the pictures on the LLSOC site when I do that. The participation on this board and the LLSOC web site has really enhanced the enjoyment of owning this wonderful car.
Something just occured to me. Why doesn't the V6 LS sport with SST allow you to start in 1st gear with SST mode. I can't believe that the V6 would be in gas guzzler territory evern with 1st gear SST.
rqmstr you can get LS wall paper and the slick LS screen saver from the Lincoln LS Japan site, unfortunatly I can't find the URL but if someone else doesn't have it you could probably come up with it via a web search. Why Lincoln US marking is not on the ball and has this sort of stuff available I'll never know.
The screensaver and wallpaper downloads can be reached by clicking the bottom icon in the lefthand column, or you can go directly to the page with this URL:
Okay, I've finally recovered the LLSOC boards. The only thing that got lost was the upgrade from Monday. Good thing I practice what I preach and had a good back up.
Now if I get my hands on the script kiddie that decided to go trolling on the web hosting providers server
I opened up my airbox also and still have the growl; you mentioned something on disconnecting the battery wire. Does that get the growl away and make it purr more, please explain. Did you replace the snorkle that bends around and fabricate something else? I want too get the mosty perf. out of my V6; lol. Mike
to answer my earlier question about the anticipated engines in 2003...since one critique that seems to pervade forums is that the LS has no interior storage space or useful compartments, does anyone know if LS in 2003 has solved that "problem", too???
But I think I saw some engineers experimenting with what looked like a new glove box. It was the size of a bread box, but the door hinges were so big and intrusive they crushed the CD changer and everything else inside. Boy, were they mad! Just kidding.
Seriously, is storage space an issue for anyone who's lived with the car for a while? It was high on every reviewer's list of complaints, but seems to be a non-issue among owners. I guess it's easy to learn to live with.
A few weeks ago, I was driving north about 75-80 and the wind was blowing from the northwest at about 20-25 MPH. The moonroof started making a horrible howling noise. After returning from the trip, I took it to my dealer and they replaced the rubber seal under warranty.
There has not been much wind since then but to test the new seal, I made a few blasts to 120 MPH or so and there was no wind noise.
Well, yesterday we had a stiff southwest wind and driving west at 75, the howl was back! It obviously occurs when the wind is coming from the side. I know it is the right rear corner of the moonroof because I put some tape over the seal in that area and that eliminated the noise.
I can actually slide a business card between the seal and the roof. The seal just isn't snug in that area. The dealer says they have done all they can do.
Anyone else have this problem or does anyone have any ideas? Do you think one of those deflectors at the front would direct the air up and over the offending area? Thanks.
At first I was VERY concerned about the lack of interior storage. I must admit that after 15 months and 29k miles it is no longer an issue. I DO have the CD changer in the trunk, so my glove box is useful. I have eliminated all the junk I used to carry around that I didn't use anyway
For the airbox I just removed the entire snorkel, cut out most of the side behind the headlight (fender side of the box), next to the snorkel mount and installed a hose from the other (right) side of the box, down that hole in the sheetmetal and out next to the foglight. I toyed with the idea of adding a hose to where the snorkel attached to the box. I even bought a hose at Pep Boys but it is 1/16" or so too small. I may yet try to make it work. I don't notice any growl, however I do have the Borla. With the added power it is hard to tell you're driving the 6!
Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow LSers specifically and to all in general :~)!!!
Took my first test drive yesterday in South Florida. The salesman was fairly incompetent, but won't go there. He only had V8 Sport to show me and knew nothing about the new LSE package. My question (he could not answer)is this: Is the suspension and tires different for the V8 Premium package? I found the ride a bit harsh on the V8 sport with (I believe) bridgestones? I'll have to look at the tires again. At speeds above 60, I could feel a slight shimmy. I loved the pickup compared to my Honda Accord, but my Honda felt smoother on the way home from the dealer. Scott
Scott, I can't directly answer your question about the Premium package. The LS, when compared to pure luxury sedans, is often found to be slightly rougher and noisier, Sport Package or not. This is the price we pay for one of the most rigid body structures in the business, and what is virtually race car suspension. There is a slight trade-off in luxury for the sake of performance. The worthiness of this is a matter of individual preference. As for the shimmy, I suggest you test a different car before making a final decision. My '00 V8 Sport is still tight and smooth at 33k miles, original tires balanced only once since new, and is driven fast over some pretty rough roads every day.
On this special day I want to thank all of you who make a most enjoyable LS driving experience even better.
PHILOSOPHY FROM THE LATE CHARLES SCHULTZ This puts things in proper perspective.
Take this quiz:
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world. 2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners. 3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest. 4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize. 5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress. 6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz.
See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school. 2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time. 3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special. 5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with. 6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.
AND Think of the blessing of driving a great car!
Easier? The lesson?
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
And don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. --- Charles Schulz
Bless you all, and especially bless our countrymen far away who are putting it all on the line, once again, to maintain our way of life.
Stan Re: Taillamps #5890. I dunno how to get them, but if you'll finance the trip, I'll volunteer to go to Tokyo & do some in-person research. It'd be arduous, but nothing's too good for my fellow LS owners!
Scottc Re: Storage #5894. I have the in-dash CD, so having the whole glove box helps. The console compartment is the thing that's REALLY too small; 2 boxes of Altoids (gotta have cinnamon and peppermint) and the darn thing's practically full. My Mark 7 had a large console box w/2 compartments; my Mark 8's was slightly smaller, and the LS is smaller still. The next one'll probably have room for a pack of gum. There's generally enough storage with the door bins and map pockets, but it could be more convenient.
SJMurray Re: #5897. The wheels and tires (235/50 17 Bridgestones) on the Premium package are definitely the same as those on the Sport package. The chrome-plated 17" Sport wheels ($845 option on Sport) are standard on Premium. I believe that the suspension on the Premium is the same as the Sport; the same description of "sport tuned suspension" is found in the ordering guide for both the Sport and Premium models. The non-Sport, non-Premium LS has 16" 60-series Continental tires & a more compliant suspension, which would probably give you a slightly softer ride.
Fantom Re: #5899. Kudos to you for a nice holiday post.
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all; boy, am I stuffed!

Just click on "LS", then on "gallery", then on "photos". These could be set for use as wallpaper, if you like.

Thanks.

PHILOSOPHY FROM THE LATE CHARLES SCHULTZ
This puts things in proper perspective.
Take this quiz:
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award
winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World
Series winners.
How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no
second-rate achievers. They are the
best in their fields. But the applause
dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are
forgotten. Accolades and certificates
are buried with their owners.
Here's another quiz.
See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your
journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you
through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made
you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories
have inspired you.
AND Think of the blessing of driving a great car!
Easier? The lesson?
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most
awards. They are the ones that care.
And don't worry about the world coming to
an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.
--- Charles Schulz
Bless you all, and especially bless our countrymen far away who are putting it all on the line, once again, to maintain our way of life.
