I've been following this discussion for several months, preparatory to purchasing an EX. Because of your advice, I did check with several dealers in the area that we frequently travel--western Iowa to Minneapolis. I contacted dealers in Bellevue, NE (near Omaha), Council Bluffs (Superior Honda) and Davenport (Lujack, Iowa and Lather Auto of Minneapolis. All responded by phone or email.

All used the same price, MSRP so there was no advantage there other than peace of mind.

We ended up at Superior in Council Bluffs, ordering for the 3 month wait but actually buying when an "extra" came in at about 6 weeks. Sales person was Mari and she did a good job. She mentioned that we'd be getting a survey but didn't suggest we give her "excellent" ratings.

Although we didn't intend to buy the Honda warrenty, the price was given to us by that salesman, first for about $1100 and then for about $1000. I found that interesting after reading other notes in this discussion where the prices seem to vary greatly for the 7/100/0 policy.

Thanks again and now, I suppose, I'll be watching the problem discussion knowing that problems are relatively few compared to the total numbers. But, if it happens to me, that's 100%.

Just picked up my Ody LX yesterday. Paid at MSRP. I received very good services from the sales person, Kim Suos, at Herb Chambers Honda in Boston. I was offered a 7/100 Warranty contract from the dealer (from API with Guaranteed Price Refund) for $1500.00. API will Refund 100% of the warranty premium at the date of expiration of the contract, if no claim filed against the warranty and has less than 100,000 miles. Sounds too good to be true? Does anyone know anything about this type of warranty contract and do you think it is a good deal?
  • acsmithacsmith Member Posts: 63
Giving you 100% of your premium back after 100K miles and no claims is not risky for API, I think. To have absolutely not one claim is unusual; one silly $50 claim wipes out that "guarantee". I'll bet they count on people not making that claim for, say $500 at 85,000 miles, knowing that claim could wipe out a $1500 refund.

I recommend that you think about the HondaCare warranty 7years/100Kmiles, zero deductible. You can buy it from several dealers named on this thread for about $900. Sure you don't get $$ back, but every Honda dealer honors the warranty, and with API (and others) you often have to wait a day or two for the warranty company to look at the problem and then authorize the repair. Do you rent a car to get to work in the meantime? Oops. $25 per day out of pocket. What is the deductible?

Third party warranties can often be like Blue-Light Specials. The aggravation and delays overcome the savings. And, in your case, you have to pay $1500 vs. $900 to Honda, and only if you have no claims do you come out ahead.

And, finally, the company has to be in business 5 or 6 years from now.

    Good luck.

Well, my van is sitting at the dealership--arrived today and the salesman is trying to tell me it takes two days before the van will be ready for me to pick up. I think what it really is that he isn't working tomorrow. The wait is killing me even if it is only 2 days :)
Paying MSRP and will only get the 7/100/0 warrenty there if they will price match $875.00.
Already they've thrown a wrench into our plans though as we're using eloan to finance part of it. Sales rep said sometimes they have trouble getting that through--whatever that means and had us apply for credit through them to see if they could match or do better than 7.3% fixed rate.
    So we'll see I guess!

Can you tell me which dealer you got you van from?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
    It should take two hours.
  • jjy_bostonjjy_boston Member Posts: 3
Thanks acsmith for your advise. I've decide not to buy either the API war. nor the hondacare war. until the end of manufacture warranty. I've talked to the sales person and he has agreed to cancel the contract and refund my $$.

    Thanks again.

Hey guys, I need your help...I have a (refundable) deposit on an Ody EX 2001 at a dealership that I like (Covington)for $26,840+ $296 for cassette installation +plus tax and tags. I have another dealership offering me one for $26,000 cassette included but a $500 NON-refundable deposit. I called Covington back to see if they can match this deal and they can't. They also warned me about this other dealership-that they have had customers complain about them adding on fees. I know any dealer can bad-mouth another but I feel they are the more honest ones. I have this nagging in my gut about the other dealership. Our deal is pretty straightforward-1/2 cash and half financed thru a credit union so we couldn't get taken by them on financing. What do you think? The other dealer is Team Honda in Baton Rouge LA. Does anyone know about them? They would save me $1200 but I don't like the deposit deal. Thanks for any advice.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
I'd honestly be as confused as you are. I don't like the non-refundable deposit bit, it seems to me they could sell the car pretty easily if you cancelled.

I just purchased a '01 SS EX from Moss Motors in Lafayette, LA for $25,800. The sales staff is very courteous and the service is excellent.
  • cshaullcshaull Member Posts: 12
Hi-I posted earlier about my dealer experience and am still unsure...the Team dealership's price now has $300 added on but it's still $900 less than the other dealership. They are still wanting a non-refundable deposit and now want me to sign a paper aggreeing to their price. I have not had to sign anything at the other dealer's. Also-I can't get any good prices on the Honda Care warranty. How do you get them over the internet and how do you know what you get is legit? I need help from you Honda owners.
    Thanks.
  • jamescaninejamescanine Member Posts: 13
You can buy the Honda Care Warranty from any dealership. I paid $855 for mine (the 7 year/100k/0 ded), but the dealership made a mistake and usual cost was supposed to be about a $100 more). Someone will hopefully respond with a short list of dealerships that will sell it in the $875-950 range. Many have posted that the dealership they buy their Ody from will match the price offered for the Honda Care Warranty when they tell them they can get it elsewhere for that price. You need to know these other dealers, so they will believe you. I don't think I have the list, but someone will post it for you as this question is asked a lot. The Ody checklist link also lists several dealerships that sell it for the prices mentioned above. Purchase it by credit card, so you can have a fighting chance if they try to sell you the wrong warranty etc. Be sure you get the 0 deductible if that is what you want as there are several variations on the Honda Care Warranty in terms of mileage, deductibility etc. You don't have to buy this at the same time you get the van, you have a long time to research this and get the best price. I had to place a $300 "non-refundable" deposit as well. Our deal worked out, and I didn't know that others were even getting Odysseys ordered without placing a deposit due to the high demand. However, some have or at least only had to place a refundable deposit. Dealerships vary quite a bit, so its not surprising that one of your dealerships does require one. Be sure to not give them a deposit until you have a buyer's contract and have every fee listed out and the bottom line (out the door) cost, so they can't add additional fees. If they try to pull any games then tell them forget it, and tell your credit card company that they did not honor the agreement and you have a very high chance of getting your deposit back. Chances are the dealership will back down and honor the price. My experience getting my 01 Odyssey was not the best, and I had to fight for the deal that was agreed upon when I gave my deposit. Bottom line: have everything (every fee and tax etc.) listed so that the final cost can't be changed unfavorably to you. Best of luck. If I find the list I will post it.

Just got my GG LX Ody last month from Selma Honda, near Fresno, strictly at MSRP. The sales person is Ray Sanchez. The dealer's number is: 559-891-3100.

Before that, I considered to buy one from that Ohio dealer Jay Honda. Then I called around Bay Area. Found out several dealers willing to sell at MSRP.

Ocean Honda at Capitola is one of them, as somebody mentioned previously. The problem is that you have to wait at least for one month. I don't want the uncertainty of waiting.

Two dealers in Fresno can also do it, without any waiting list. I think one is Honda North. I forgot the sales person name. He only agreed the MSRP price two days after I promised to buy from another dealer.

Everything was pretty smooth. Well, I should not try to pretend Fresno is part of Bay Area. It is 160 miles away from my home. So I had to pay $25 and spend 3 1/2 hours on Greyhound to get there and Ray picked me up at the Fresno Station. Took me 3 hours to drive back home.

I posted a reply to your question, mentioning the name and phone number of the dealer whom I bought it from at MSRP. But the message was removed by the host, as it was in apparent violation of the terms of use of this board. I am not sure why, because I have seen others post similar information.

Anyway, if you need that information, please send me email at sanghavi@yahoo.com.

Picked up our SS LX on Sat. We absolutely love it! Kids think it is ultimate cool to be able to close the doors while sitting in their seats. My wife is so happy to have replaced our 94 Voyager, which in truth was a good vehicle with no major problems & good gas mileage. Paid MSRP in WI, w/ discounted options (CD, keyless, cargo tray and splashguards. Excellent treatment, dealt with internet mgr. and spent less than 2 hours at the dealer. The Silver is an amazing color, my dad is so jealous (loves his '99 CSS LX, but really wanted this color). Best part about it was the wait: Ordered 3/14, VIN# 3/21, arrived 3/27, took delivery 3/31!

My question regarding the Hondacare warranty is this: Is it worth it for the LX? The dealer offered $855+tax for 7/100/0 HC, and I deferred, knowing I'd look at mileage and characteristics in the first 6-9 months before deciding. Price was the best I'd seen this side of Alton Blakely, and telling them of that price enabled them to offer it. FWIW, Finance guy told me that $855 is 'Cost + $30.'
Thanks to all of who post on this and related Odyssey sites-it helped tremendously in convincing me that $25K for an Ody LX beats a discounted DGC for a slightly less price for our family.

We've had our GG LX for one month, and have been asking ourselves the same question. But after following this forum for a few months, I've come to the conclusion that the automatic doors are the biggest problem with this van, which is why I specifically chose the LX over the EX. It's a crap shoot either way, and I know I have enough in savings to cover a big (god forbid) repair. If I had an EX I'd get the warranty in a heartbeat.

Can anyone tell me what is a good price for a Odyssey in Boston? Who are the good dealers?

Is a Odyssey warranty a good deal? I would think if the dealer is going to make money of the warranty, it would be better to take the risk and not pay upfront. Is the Odyssey unreliable enough that a warranty is needed?
  • reed57reed57 Member Posts: 3
cshaull, we bought our used 99 Ody from Team Honda two weeks ago. It was originally sold out of Cordova,TN, I believe. Salesman was top notch. They have a brand new location, but I don't think the dealershi itself is brand new. The service dept was supposed to go over the van and take care of any outstanding recalls, the did not. I'll do my serviceng elsewhere. I, personally, would not go for a non refundable deposit arrangement.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
Lists the Odyssey at $27,510 in southern California. I know dealers selling at MSRP or slightly above,$26,840-$27,040. Where does Edmunds get their prices from?
  • masshoosiermasshoosier Member Posts: 70
Still MSRP around here as far as I can tell. I think the wait time has shrunk from when I purchased (Nov. 99). HondaNorth in danvers on Rt.1 North is where I bought. They're a no-haggle dealership and a pleasure to work with. They asked if you wanted options but didn't shove it in your face or throw them on before your pick-up date and play dumb, no tricks. I know of others who have bought from there and were happy as well. I didn't have a trade so I don't know how fair they are in that department. All there purchases come with what they call a "Honfidence" policy. It basically means free inspections, free towing, 2 free oil changes, free loaner(they have an Ody loaner too) for when you have to leave it for the day or longer, and lifetime guarentee on all work and parts. All that provided you do your repair work and maintenance with them. Not a big deal by any stretch but the free towing means you don't have to flip a coin on the AAA membership or not. If you live near there and plan to stay in the area for a long stretch then you might be interested in thier dealer warranty(10 yr/100k). I didn't look at the particulars but it seemed to cover most everything(I'm sure not all, but thats something that needs looked at) the HondaCare does but for half the price, just under $400 I think. I know dealer warranties are usually shaky but this really did seem to be legit. I think they bank on the transient nature of the residents around here. Anyways,, good luck.

Don't know if any of you have heard, but the Odyssey now has an option Entertainment System, known as the i-VES. Even my dealer didn't have a price yet on it though, only literature. Looks pretty nice though. He seems to think that it will be somewhere near $1200.

It is a "Specifically designed Video Cassette Player, with a roof mounted 7.0" flip-down TFT-LCD screen." Controlled from up front between driver and passenger seats and fully functional wireless remote. Capable of interfacing to video game consoles, protable DVD players, camcorders, etc. Can listent to audio through the vehicle's sound system, or through headphones. My Odyssey hasn't shipped yet, but I think I will be adding this feature.

Just thought you might want to know....

I am in market for an Ody LX, possibly considering an EX but was surprised that my initial queries resulted in quotes which were 2k above MSRP. Is this really true? Like to know of folks who have recently gotten at MSRP (or close to) in the bay area. Also was considering going for LX and adding a multi CD changer (I do not like the single CD changer in EX)+ keyless + roof rack. Any experiences on something similar might be helpful.

Thanks in advance for all the pointers

Tough one. Maybe a few hundred over. Saw MSRP today on a Mesa Beige LX in LA.

Edmunds True Market Value for the LX is about $1000 over MSRP. You can try shopping with our partners via this link but I wouldn't get my hopes up without a lot of work and maybe some luck.

You might think about Blast Fax Car Buying too.

    Luck!

Dealer in pA is offering LX for 24340 + tax + 125(title) and Ex for 26840 + tax + 125(title).
The van would be delivered in July.

Is the extra 2500 worth for the EX?

2 of my friends had problem with the power sliding door.. Is the Ex still worth it?
    thanks
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
MSRP is not bad at all. Which one do you want?
  • dz6tdz6t Member Posts: 18
The EX is worth the extra $2500.

    You get:
    1. 16 inch tires with alloy wheels. It is a must for a van that heavy. The steel wheels won't cut it and you might have the famous "shimming" problem.
    2. roof rack
    3. automatic climate control
    4. anti-theft protection
    5. power driver seat.
    6. power doors
    7. CD player
    8. body color mirror and side bar.
    what else do I miss?
Well, the feeling of driving a EX instead of a LX.
  • patel68patel68 Member Posts: 16
I called a number of dealers. Those who had the car available wanted a lot more than MSRP. Some would not give a price over the phone. Most did not seem interested in talking to me. I did make two appointments to visit tomorrow. I'll let you know how I do.

When it rains, it pours. I had my name on three California lists with no delivery date promised so I decided to go with a dealer in Vegas because I found a sales person with integrity who wasn't trying to price gouge me. FYI,you can bring a new Honda back to CA with no problem because it is smogged for 50 states. You pay your taxes in CA and the only hassle is you have to get a smog certificate. Today, I was to fly to Vegas to pick up the car but I got 3 calls from 3 CA dealers. I'll pick up my car tomorrow at my local dealer with 6.9% financing and at sticker. BTW, the guy in Vegas is Jim Katcher and can be reached at Honda-West in Vegas. He'll make you happy. I would consider this a good option if you are in CA near an airport. Good luck.

I have been following this town hall discussion weekly for the past six months and have gleaned a lot of useful information! Wanting to get the best price possible I made notes of what others had paid for the Odyssey and the accessories. I realized that the only people paying under MSRP were those who bought their Odysseys in OH, KY, IL, IN, TN and a couple of other mid-eastern states. No one on the West Coast seemed to be getting any deals! I called at least 13 dealerships within a 200 mile radius of Vancouver WA. All but two dealerships laughed at me when I told them I wanted to pay (for an EX) MSRP, $875.00 for 7/100,000 warranty, + free cassette player & air deflector. The two dealerships who said that would be possible told me they presold and I would have to wait 1-4 months for the vehicle. I told them to call me if something fell through and two weeks later got a call from Thomas Motors in The Dalles OR. They told me they had one in, (I only wanted GG) but without my free accessories. I told them I was only interested in buying with those free accessories. They called me back two hours later and agreed to my terms! I should have asked for the Cargo Tray too, they might have given it to me. ;-) We test drove the Granite Green EX Odyssey and it had no pull to one side or another (as others have complained), heard no sloshing gas, and the doors worked beautifully! They installed the cassette player and air deflector while we signed the papers and we were on our way! No haggling or high pressured sales for rust proofing! (Robbie@autobytel.net) Robbie called a couple of days later and said they have another Odyssey in if I knew of anyone who was interested! We had a great experience and the way I see it, with $600.00 of free accessories, its like $600.00 under MSRP and I feel like we got as good of deal as those buyers in OH and KY! I ordered a Cargo Tray ($57) and Splash Guards ($57) through Hondaparts4you.com and they have free shipping! I've seen those for alot more other places and with huge shipping costs added on. The other dealer ship that was willing to work with me was in Olympia WA called Capitol Honda or Capitol City Honda. Every other dealership I called from Olympia WA to Corvallis OR said I would never find anyone to meet my terms and that I was out of line. I also found a broker in the Vancouver, WA area who goes to wholesale auctions and says he can find minivans less than a year old and at least five thousand dollars cheaper than new. Got my loan through Peoplefirst.com for 6.95%. Thanks to all who have posted what you paid, I couldn't have done it without your help!!!

Ok, ok I have read alot about MSRP in LA area. Could someone give me the names of those dealers in Los Angeles Area who is going to deal? Never bought a Car at MSRP always below MSRP.
  • pepperpotpepperpot Member Posts: 4
Why is it that regardless of how far back in posts one goes there is never any mention of a trade in ? If two people for the sake of an arguement could trade the same vehicle and one was allowed $5200 and the other was allowed $3700 it cannot be said if everything else was the same that both paid the same for an ODY. The only meanful info on what was paid in my opinion are those that are bought outright and this should be mentioned in the post. Then it could be said that the bottom line is truly what was paid and the MSRP was where one started without being unduly influenced by a variable later on. Would appreciate your comments if I did not put it in the proper perspective.

"The FEELING you get when you drive an EX????

Other than the alloy rims what performance qualities are you talking about? The power driver seat? The new LX seat adjusts the same way.

My van drives great on those steel rims, no shimmys whatsoever.

Nothing on your list points to performance.

Since traction control was added to the LX the extras(alloy rims being the exception) on the EX are cosmetic or creature comforts. Not that there is anything wrong with that. You do get a fair $2500 worth of them. Roof rack? Only functional if you use it, something you need to ask yourself before buying and then its only what, $400 or so too add if you go the LX route, cheaper if your a little handy.

I'm still curious about this "Feeling". Sounds like a status feeling to me. But hey, if thats what your into, nothing wrong with that either.....to each is his/her own.
  • patel68patel68 Member Posts: 16
I have had no luck in the Bay Area so I am starting my fax quest tomorrow. I plan to offer MSRP right up front. I have no trade, I have it sold privately already. The two dealers I visited yesterday were not willing to talk price, even though they had agreed to on the phone. The first appointment cancelled after we arrived and the second refused to talk price, even considering I was willing to pay MSRP on the next available car.

I am also considering one of the internet services. I am afraid most of them look like they are just representing one dealer. Some of the other online services post prices a lot more than MSRP. I'll try the faxes first to see what happens.
  • dz6tdz6t Member Posts: 18
Keep in mind that we are talking about Minivan here, not sports car. Cosmetic or creature comforts ARE important here. BTW I ordered a LX but end up with a EX partially because I heard from a friend who work for Honda that the alloy rims are necessary for Ody because of the weight.
  • dz6tdz6t Member Posts: 18
There is another reason for me to buy a EX: I want a totally factory assemble van. All options are dealer installed, I don't trust those dealers. I want keyless remote entry and for LX, it is a dealer installed option. I have seen a silver LX with dealer installed keyless/alarm, the job was poorly done.

    Patel68:

OD so far no one has answered my question that " Has anyone ever paid MSRP in LA area?" I read ray bear's multiple messages regarding MSRP in LA. But no one else replied yet. I have tried LiquidPirce.com which is one of the on-line pricing site listed on Edumunds.com. I had one quote for a LX which was exactly MSRP a few weeks ago, but it was a GA color and I am looking for S. Since it was the first quote I got, I didn't jump on it and accept the bid. Then I got a 2nd quote for a AS EX a week later. It was $1000 above MSRP ($27840.- which is almost $4000.- above invoice listed on Edumunds.com). I added the dealer hold back 2% (which is my guess) and totaled about $4500.- profit for dealer on this van. I didn't jump on the 2nd one either. Too bad Edmunds took the Dealer hold back list off their site now. Must be the PRESSURE from Advertiser. Anyway I submitted another quote request for a AS EX thru LiquidPrice.com. So far I haven't gotten any bid yet. Every quote request only lasts for 48 hours @ LiquidPrice.com. I will keep you posted, so soon as I got anything in the email. I tried Autobytel.com before I purchased my Toyota Avalon 1997. All I got was some local dealers called me and promised to give me a good deal but I have to go to their dealerships to WORK OUT the detail price. I balked on all those dealer' call. I don't know whether Autobytel has improved or not since 1997. This time I haven't tried any of those web sites yet. I liked LiquidPrice.com policy that I will not get any dealer's phone call unless I accept the bidding price, which works very good with me.
I read way back a few weeks ago some guy mentioned LA dealers asks above MSRP and some San Diego dealer is willing to deal at MSRP. But he or she didn't post how much he or she paid at which dealership. I think maybe just some SD dealer's fake post and wants LA people to go down south to buy there. Which I won't mind to take a few hours drive and pick up a minivan there if I can get it at MSRP.
Anyway good luck to your shopping at Bay area. I hope my 93 Mercury Villager (which has 169,000 miles on it) will hold together till I get a good deal on new Odyssey.

I think if you go through and look at the amount of shimmy posts, I bet you'll find a good number of them are from EX as well as LX. As a matter of fact I have been following theses Ody boards for two years now and not one complaint about the steel rims has been logged that I can recall.

Actually the shimmy you are talking about when an LX was involved was attributed to the Affinitys first before anything mechanical was looked into. Not the rims.

And you say "keep in mind were not talking about a sports car here??!!!" How dare you, after you went over to the MPV boards and ridculed thier van for being so unpowered. Performance seemed to matter then but now it doesn't as much? Things that make you go hmmmmmmm.

Creature comforts are important to the individual buyer only, just because you prefer them doesn't mean they are soooooo important to everybody else in the minivan buying segmant. Some of us are after value, some of us just can't afford the EX. If you covet them so much, why didn't you buy the T&C limited or whatever they call the EX priced new thing they came up with.

Oh yeah, now whats that special feeling you were talking about. Us LXers would like to know what that is, perhaps we can buy it from Trevor.

    Benn--

I wasn't fooling around. I'm not allowed to disclose the dealers' names under the terms of our agreement with them. Try Powershopper like Steve suggested; there are internet sites that request competetive bids not just the one you mentioned.

    Patel68 (and anyone else listening):

I live in Atlanta and recently (Dec.2000) I searched for Honda dealers within a 2 hour driving distance and wrote to a few of them. As expected the Metro Atlanta dealers wanted to pile on $$ on top of MSRP. But, some of the smaller town dealers offered MSRP (and I am sure with today's economy you can bargain some more on a new car - no matter what car/van!).
If distance is a problem for you, some of the dealers would even deliver the car for you and do the paperwork at your home! (atleast that's how it works in the good old Southeast!).
So, I would just write an email to each of the dealers and ask them for a FIRM DRIVE OUT PRICE. And only respond to the ones that you like (worst case, drive a couple of hours and find one in a neighboring state!).

    Good Luck!

A Honda dealer has one of these in the display room. Is asking $23,500, has 39,000 miles and was a rental. I have considered it and realize I should also purchase an extended warranty. I am wondering what some of you who have this year think? I've read in Consumer Reports' April issue that this is one year of the Odyssey to avoid due to many hardware and electrical problems. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
