If you decide to head for Mike Pruitt it might be worth your while to stop at a couple of stores in the Columbus area on the way: Hugh White and Marysville Honda.

Just purchased 06 Sage Brush Pearl EX-L at Frank Kent Honda in West Fort Worth. Dealer experience was exceptional. I had been to three other dealers and all were very high-pressure. Not this one. Frank Kent has my business in the future if I buy another Honda. Here is the breakdown in price.

    Cost of EX-L: 27,708 w/destination
tint on front windows: 169 (standard on all vehicles)
    Total: 27,877 + TTL

Other Dealers that would not do the deal:
David McDavid, Honda Cars of McKinney, Huggins Honda.
They all had Dealer add on packs and would not remove them or eat the cost of these to sell me the van. I walked at DMcDavid over $400!(price of add ons)

We had called ahead at Frank Kent and already agreed on a price. We were in, picked a van, tested it, filled out paper work, went with Honda Financing 4.999%, and drove out in under three hours. The Sales person told me that they dealer profited around $400. Not sure if this is accurate, but use it for future use.

One other note, Holmes Honda in Shreveport is selling all in-stock EX-L's with no dealer add-on's for: $27,558 w/ destination (check ebay). I just didn't feel like driving out there for $150.

Now, does anyone want to buy a 1997 Plymouth Grand Voyager with 115K? just kidding....

We just bought an EX-L RES from the Honda Superstore of Lisle in Lisle, IL. We got a sage brush pearl w/ olive interior for $29,187 (including destination) plus ttl.

The dealership was professional and straightforward to deal with.

Their quoted price was the same as Valley Honda (Aurora, IL), but they got the deal when Valley reneged on their trade-in offer. Valley quoted $10k for trade-in after a full inspection, then a week later would only offer $8k when it came time to do the deal; same car, same salesman. Oh well.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for sharing your info, it saved me a lot of headache and a lot of dough!

How much (if anything) above invoice should I be paying for a 2006 EX-L w/o DVD or NAVI?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
    Depends on where you are...

but here in SF Bayarea....which has higher cost and therefore higher prices....the dealers everywhere say they can get me a EXL for less than invoice....since there are more to choose from.

EXL with Nav and RES are only 10% of all shipments...and are in hotter demand....so there is less discounting here.
  • donm23donm23 Member Posts: 12
Thanks for the response, highender. I am in CT. Have others experienced below-invoice pricing for a 2006 EX-L?

Isn't $27,708 the invoice price before the $550 destination charge? How are they selling cars for invoice w/o destination?
  • thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
My point was that you can not get around destination, however, you can TRY to buy it for 550 dollars less.

    Hi,

We just got EX-L with RES from Crystal Lake Honda. As was mentioned here a few times they do give the best deals. The best deal I got from a local dealer was over $2,000 more.
Crystal Lake gave us a quote over the phone, we drove 3 hours to their dealership and ended up buying it for $28,996.25 + $57.33 doc fee + $10 license fee.

The overall experience at the dealership was great, fast and efficient. The only thing is that the car is missing wireless headsets for the RES. I guess we were too excited to check and make sure there were there. The sales person said they'll mail them to us. So I guess we'll be totally happy if they follow through.

Thanks everyone for posting here. It's great knowing what people are paying before going to the dealership.

Oh and btw, we are loving the mini van :)
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
HI...I was wondering, does your minivan have a navigation ?

Over here, there was no way any dealer will sell for that price. Well, at least not now.

I found my headphones beneath the middle row carpets...inside the lazy susan secret compartment....

Oh...sssshhhh....we don't want tooo many people knowing about this...

Just purchased Odyssey EX-L with NAV/RES from Rusty Wallis Honda, Dallas. I shopped around quite a bit via email / phone. At the pinnacle of my negotiations many dealers agreed to match $1k below invoice, then backed off when they knew I could not get my original $1k below deal.

Did want to mention one experience that really ticked me off. I had met with David McDavid Honda at Frisco on Friday. When I requested 1k below invoice, the sales guy - called me in to the dealership, however their manager said they could not do the deal at that price, so we thanked them and left with a smile. However 2 days later another of their sales people sold a vehicle to my neighbour and assured me that he could take care of things for me. My quote from Rusty Wallis was $600 below invoice, which he said they would match without a problem. I told him today was the last day for 4.99% financing, and I did not have time to visit multiple dealers and they had already turned me down once for that price. I would only come in if he assured me that he would match the $600 below invoice. He assured me multiple times on the phone. Again at the dealership, they wanted me to take a test drive etc. etc. and I kept asking him not to waste my time since other dealers would close, if he could not deliver on the promised price, which he did again assured me he would. Sure enough after 1.5 hrs, the manager walked in and said he could not sell at this price since he would make a loss. I lost my head real bad, since this was the 2nd time this was happening and with time running short, this was not funny. The sales guy knew all along he would not honor his commitment and still blatantly disregarded my repeated pleas for him to be upfront with me.I had zero problem with the fact that they did not wish to sell "at a loss", but I took strong objection to them playing games with me and trying to corner me in a spot where I would have had no choice, but to buy from them for lack of time. I would strongly recommend against buying from David McDavid of Frisco. They will always say yes to whatever price you quote on the phone, and then say no when you show up in person, and then try to sell at a higher price. It is worth mentioning that every other dealer I spoke with, either said no or said we cannot commit on the phone, when I told them I did not have time to come in, and if they could match this price.

I drove down to see Rusy Wallis Honda at Dallas. The difference was like night and day. The sales guy showed me the price he quoted on the phone right off the bat, and had pulled a credit check for the loan within 5 minutes. Nobody tried to sell us anything extra such as accessories, warranty etc. Wonderful wonderful experience. I was out in an hour and pleasantly surprised after being treated like crap in Frisco. I strongly recommend this dealer

    Price - $600 below invoice
Included free - pro pack ( mud guards, wheel locks, cargo tray)
Cost on the road - $33,015

Sorry this post has become longer than I wanted it to be, but I wanted to make sure I share my experience for any new buyers out there....

Dealer: Bell Honda in Phoenix, AZ
Car: Odyssey Slate Green Metallic with Olive interior
"Extras": Splash guard, wheel locks, cargo tray, All-Season Floor mats
    Experience: Very pleasant, low pressure

Price of vehicle: $31,300 (destination charge included)

Out the door price: $34,804 (including tax, title, license, tire fee, and "doc" fee of $369)

Drove 3.5 hours home after purchase. Phenomenal minivan. Wife will love this vehicle.

This board helped me alot, so I wanted to share my experience.

Prior to doing research, I drove the Odyssey and loved it. At that time I was pegging $32500-$33000 for an EX-L w/ NAV & RES. Then, I found this board.

I ended up purchasing from Honda of Mentor in Ohio. The dealership is a little over an hour from my house in PA. Price paid was $31,000 + $149 (Splash Guards) + $125 Doc & fees. OTD was $31,274. They were very organized and had everything lined up for me when I got there. If it were not for a minor navigation snafu I would have been in and out in under an hour. They were even able to get me 5.59% 60 month financing (Best i got on Lending Tree was %5.75%). Overall, very positive and I highly recomend them.

Local Dealership (Erie, PA) was not willing to go below $31,700 +Doc fees.

The van has been great so far (500 miles); although I feel like we have only touched on learning all of its features.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
    You guys are lucky...

Here on the west coast....dealers lie alot about how they cannnot make money...

Even when I tell them that we know about the dealer holdback...the end of month incentives, the group bonus, etc.....

At invoice...they are still making thousands....

But here in SF/Bay Area....all prices are above invoice...if you are lucky. If not, they go down from MSRP ...and tell you its the best price in the country.
  • thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
Please be careful with your assumptions into how much profit we make. I highly advise you to re-read the Edmunds article on holdback before making comments about it b/c you obviously know nothing about how it works.

Holdback money is net money that we recieve to recoup marketing, advertising, floorplan, and all other general business expenses ie: electric, water, payroll, local taxes and fees and permits etc....

by the way....Ody's have never had a dealer cash or special incentives...sometime I wish they did. There is also no way you could have knowledge about any bonuses or incentives that Honda may offer a dealer for selling a certain amount of new or certified pre-owned vehicles unless you are in the business or know someone that is.

Explain to me how we can make "thousands" selling a Ody at invoice. Or better yet, a civic.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
    Hello mr salesman:

Yes....the mere fact that dealers make money at $1000 below invoice....means that at invoice...you guys make at least $1500...probably more ? My guess.

Of course...there may be announced and unannouced incentives...

an example of announced incentives is the one where Mercedes offered $2000 below invoice....so my friend and I bought a C230 for only $29477 , out the door....

Research on numerous car sites indicate there are factory to dealer incentives , as well as bonuses.....

I do not know what the details for Odyssey is...but I am sure only the owner or general manager knows...

Maybe you can come clean...and tell us the real truth ?
  • astankovicastankovic Member Posts: 3
    Hi highender,

No navigation just RES. We looked in the lazy susan and they were not there. They should be in the mail now according to the salesperson.

I tried with two local dealerships before we went to Crystal Lake. I spoke with a sales person from Gurley Leep Honda in Elkhart, IN and he was very nice even though he couldn't do a deal at that price. He even called me a couple of days later to see if I bought the car.

On the other hand the experience at Basney Honda in South Bend, IN left me speechless. The sales person literally got mad when I told him the price I was offering and made a scene at the dealership that all the customers that were there looked at us weird. We walked out of there embarrassed and with a promise never to go to that dealership again.

I am all for supporting local business but when they are jerks and unprofessional I'll rather drive 3 hours or heck buy it online. Sorry for venting here, but they really made me upset :)

"He stated that the dealer would make anywhere from $100 - 200 per vehicle sold. That is an extra $100,000 - 200,000/month."

Actuallt that is an "extra" $10-20K, not $100-200K.
  • pusterracingpusterracing Member Posts: 186
    astankovic,

You must be in the same area I am. I talked to Gurley Leep and Basney, neither one wanted to come more than about $800 off MSRP. That was why I drove out to Michigan City, Team Honda (which is also a Leep dealership), to get my EX-L R&N. Unfortunately, since I had to have NAV (Daddy wants his toys), I wasn't able to score as nice a deal as you got, but then again, only 11% (or so I'm told) are EX-L R&N, making it harder to deal on them. In the end, I was $325 over invoice......or $2300 under Basney and Gurley Leep and pleased with the price I paid (and I do agree, they were pleasant at Gurley Leep).

Just bought a EX-L With NAV/RES and Honda towing package from Lehigh Valley Honda.
    Color: Red

    $33,000 including destination charge.

Although there is alot a talk about getting cars "under invoice" I feel that it's always a good measure to offer a fair price right off that includes a modest profit margin for the dealer can live with. The price I got it for was $3000 off the MSRP but above the edmund's invoice. I left a little room for the dealer and the deal went down rather quick. I think the best price I have seen this van go for from the forums was $32,600 with the same equipment.

EX-L RES/NAV $31173 (incl destination, before tax and before $125 document and title fee). Wyler Honda Cincinnati. $500 under invoice.

Their salesman nailed jello to the wall. First to *seriously* respond to my email, even with me 50 miles away. The best of the rest of the other dozen or so dealers I got quotes from was about $200 under invoice (but that dealer is notorious for pulling last minute stunts ... walked out of a deal on them 13 years ago, even tho I saw a quote from them for $800 under invoice, which I simply can't believe).

All in all a smooth way to buy an Ody. It was an end-of-the-month deal, and I was ready to receive a van they wanted to move. Win-win all around. I'd recommend Wyler again in a heartbeat.

DCH Paramus Honda, March 29th. Car: $26,850; Dest: $550; NYC Tax: $2294.75; Doc: $129; Tags: $175. Out the door in an hour and a half during peak hours on a busy day for $29,998.75.

We handled the negotiation and documentation - including insurance - via e-mail, phone and fax, which saved a lot of time once we arrived at the dealership. The salesman was young and aggressive in a good way - he just wanted to get the deal done. When some small problems came up, he was quick to resolve them in our favor.
I went to DCH with some trepidation, because they've had significant legal problems (thank you, Google). Several dealers had dropped out of the bidding and said, "There's no way that price can be legitimate". So I figured something bad would happen when we got to Paramus. Our experience at the dealership, however, was nearly flawless.
DCH is a huge operation, and much probably depends on the people you deal with. It might not be a good place to do your test drive, because they have a reputation for high-pressure sales. But I would strongly recommend the particular folks who handled our purchase. Can't mention names here, of course.
  • bigbluebloggerbigblueblogger Member Posts: 12
Hi, Gregg. We wound up buying from DCH Paramus Honda. See post 12173 above for details.

In that post, I forgot to thank Edmunds and the participants in this board for all the fantastic information here. What a resource!

    All,
What are the best quotes people have gotten for Touring with nav and RES? I could not find any recent posts with quotes on this forum.

We had pretty much decided to go with the Sienna due to the PAX tire issues, but after sitting in both vans over the weekend, Ody was the winner for us. Next step is to find a good price.

I am in the Chicago area. Crystal lake Honda is relatively close to me but Google "Crystal lake Honda" and follow the 1st link. Kinda scary! I haven't yet started emailing any dealers but based on this board, CL Honda seems to have the best pricing.

Another question: When you email dealers, it it better to ask for their best price or is it advisable for me to name a price and hence the starting point for the negotiation?

Thanks for any advice. Regards, -K
  • slugopieslugopie Member Posts: 4
First, thanks to this site and all the advice from everyone. We got much better deal due to advice here. We just bought Ody - EXL Slate Green - Olive Int at Hendrick Honda - VA for 27,399 + Tax, Title, Licence and $299 Doc Fee. Other quotes we got are below. We were looking at DVD/NAV, but decided to spend the $ on other priorities.
Hendrick Honda was great, no last minute issues, internet sales department straight shoots from the beginning. Original quote as $27,450 earlier in the month, but day we bought they had lowered it. We bought extended warranty through Bernini(sp?) Honda, as shown on this site. Hendrick just pushed a Hendrick version, we said no thanks.
Mike Pruitt Honda was also outstanding and had the best price on Ody EXL DVD/NAV system we could find. Straight forward, and easy to deal with. Willing to pick up at airport, if you are from out of town. Would recommend both places.
Interesting, most of the quotes I got did not include freight ($550) or some doc fee ($100 - $299).

    Prices : EXL + Tax + Title/License
    27,698 Hendrick Honda
    30,007 Honda of Tyson's Corner
    29,558 Koons Honda
    28,233 Mike Pruitt Honda
    28,107 Bill Page Honda

Again, thanks for all the help. We love the van!
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
If you can, tell them you are ready to buy and ask for their best price. Be sure to email a sufficient number of stores (10-20) to get an accurate idea of the market.
  • thebillthebill Member Posts: 194
    10 to 20?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
True...maybe you don't need to email that many...

OTOH, doing your research is good.

    How are you, thebill?

.....is it true that EXL with Nav & RES are only 10% of all Ody ?

There's nothing like a little competition, thebill. I recommend 10-20, especially for someone in area like the OP (Chicago) where there are many stores reasonably close. Perhaps half won't even respond to a request for a quote.

That is interesting. My broker told me it was 425 over invoice, of course I thought that was a good deal. Where do you find invoice numbers?

Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) says the invoice + destination on a 2006 EX-L (no DVD) is $28,258.43. I am pretty sure Edmunds reports the same number on this site.

Signed the papers earlier this evening. Got an EX for invoice ($26,102). I also got them to throw in the cargo tray, compass/mirror, and 4 oil changes. Tom Kadlec Honda in Rochester, MN.

Seemed like a good deal to me - although now I'm thinking it was almost too easy. Most of the dealing was through email. Started out with an email quote from them at 26500 (no extras included). I told them about the great deals I've seen on this forum (and how I would like to stay in town, and would pay a small premium to stay in town), and they came back at 26100.

I did trade in a vehicle, and maybe they got me a little there. I got 1k under kbb, though it was still 400 above edmunds TMV. I told them I was hoping for 500 more than they were offering for the trade in, but if they threw in the compass/mirror, cargo try, and oil changes I would be happy. So they accepted the deal. I'm guessing that being the last day of the selling month/quarter halped me out a bit.
  • jndjnd Member Posts: 6
After following this forum for about a month I finally did it.

LaFonatine in Dearborne, Michigan, (Detroit metro area)

    $25,249.86 vehicle price
    $160 Doc fee
    taxes @ 6% $1524.59
    $211 license fee
    $15 title/reg

    OTD 27,190.45

They beat Crystal lakes price only by pennies, but avoided the 10 hour round trip.

Good luck to all. To those still looking, you might have to wait until closer to the end of the month for the dealers to get competitive again.

I can not thank eveyone enough for their input into this forum.

    The Odyssey is awesome.
