Today's fill-up was for $3.95, most stations $4.10 or higher for 87 octane. Diesel's running about $4.15 on average. The one Speedway station on my route showed E85 for $3.75.

We had gone back up to $3.79 a couple of days ago. On Monday afternoon, we bumped to $3.85. Tuesday morning, back to $3.79

    Yea, market forces, right
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
That's eased about four cents from recent highs.

Our Democrat Super Majority was not happy with the highest gas tax in the Nation. They kicked it up another 3.5 cents starting today. San Diego average is at $4.26. Diesel still holding at $4.15.

My mistake it goes up July 1st.

It's official: Gas tax going up

The tax you pay on a gallon of gas will rise by 3.5 cents in California come July 1.

The state Board of Equalization voted 3-2 on Thursday to increase the excise tax about 10 percent, from 36 cents per gallon to 39.5 cents per gallon.

The increase is partly due to a $157 million shortfall in gas-tax revenue in fiscal 2012, and also a projection of less consumption by California drivers.

The state legislature switched its gas taxation system in 2010 so it could re-appropriate some of the gas tax money from road maintenance to other areas. It reduced the sales tax from 8.25 percent to 2.25 percent, but roughly doubled the excise tax to 35.3 cents. The excise tax has increased multiple times since, but previous hikes were by fractions of cents.

    $3.79 in Happy Valley
  • PF_FlyerPF_Flyer Member Posts: 9,372
    More ticks... in both directions

We now have a range of $3.73 up to $3.89 for no apparent rhyme or reason
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
Despite the HUGE price jump was able to fill up for $3.80; other stations jumped from $3.72 on average to $3.96 over a 12-hour period on Monday  .

    This despite numerous reports:

Prices were to decline over the next few weeks
    China slowing down again
Refineries are not as off-line as they were
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
My local station is holding at $3.88, diesel is $4.23.

Up the road regular can be found for $3.68.

    >Despite numerous reports:...

Now the excuse is that DINs or NINs which are financials traded, something related to use of alcohol from food crops in our fuel, have spiked 1400% due to lower supplies of ethanol, the cost of fuels which are mandated to have a certain percentage of alcohol over a year's time _must_ increase.

...And, because not enough ethyl alcohol is availabe, gasoline WITHOUT ethanol is being exported because it doesn't need to be included in the alcohol use requirements from our beloved EPA.

Looking over my records from last year we experienced the same 20 ~ 30 cent jump in February, leveled off near $4 by mid-March then jumped another 60 cents over a 2 week period to end March at ~4.30.

So I guess we're right on schedule...

    Thanks for the update Imi...

Maybe those that be read about Maker's Mark thinking of lowering the alcohol content in it's drink and Bud being watered down (which if you EVER went to a Cubs game you'd know that) decided to "react" with an"Oh no, lower alcohol content in booze due to low supply, must be low supply for petrol too".

    Far-fetched but then again... ;)

    >Maker's Mark thinking of lowering the alcohol content in it's drink

I think that alcohol is fermented right in place in the Makers Mark. The alcohol for gasoline is fermented from various grain stations here in the midwest. I occasionally see a gasoline tanker full of alcohol leaving an area production plant about 20 miles from here. The mash is sold as farm feed and the CO2 off gas is sold to the dry ice producer next door.

The NIM units I mentioned are like the carbon tax credits that can be sold/traded among companies. I haven't looked up the right name; maybe someone knows.

Today at Costco the price was $3.97. On this date last year the price at Costco was $4.25.
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
Yes, they ferment right there, similar to most, if not all, the makers. Just making fun, as it seems ANY type of excuse is used to raise prices. Making alcohol is a pretty cool process, dangerous, but really cool.

But, I'm off-topic, back to topic at hand. Was in the city on Friday evening and the prices were in the $3.90 ~ $4.05 range for 87 octane. A couple of the $3.95 stations by me went back to $3.80. No apparent reason.

Hard to read the typical "spring-break" rise this year, maybe last week was it.
  • jae5jae5 Member Posts: 1,206
You're running the same as our local Costco. Not sure what the SAM's Club was running - they're usually 5 ~ 10 cents cheaper. I have a $10 gas card from them, may use it in the summer for the mower.

I'm a cash person so don't fill-up there + my normal places are either the same price or slightly lower.

Paid $3.99 for Chevron diesel today (first time I've fueled up the car since I got it a month ago today - was down around 1/4, which is as low as I like to go). Premium was $3.92. So that's about 2% more, not bad.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
The Subaru is getting down to a quarter of a tank. Rather than buy gas, I've driven the van a couple of times this week. Just checked my gas log and I last put gas in it back on November 13. Seems eager to run.

Gas is unchanged around here; $3.88 locally, $3.68 down the road.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
Just filled the Lexus at Costco. Price was $4.17 for premium. Last filled October last year and the price was $4.19. Mileage on that tank was 17.49 MPG. About normal.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Heh, I'm only down maybe 1/2 a tank in the minivan so I may be able to beat you. But we're tripping in mid April so maybe not. :shades:

    >Last filled October last year and the price was $4.19.

You and Steve need to add Stabil to your tanks when you fill up those cars. October to March: 5 months!!!

    $3.83 in town for regular.

NPR just said (quoting gasbuddy.com), that the national average for regular is now $3.53.

It's $3.74 here in town. Going to Chicago tomorrow but I have a half tank, so I'm going to get a bit closer to Wisconsin before buying any and try to find some closer to the national average.

Didn't see a diesel or premium price.

    In the Bucktown area:

    RUG - $4.19
    Midgrade - $4.39
    Premium - $4.69
    Diesel - $4.55

Train/bus fare is $2.25 so no great bargain there either. Free parking in the neighborhoods at least, assuming you can find a spot.

    $3.259 for RUG
    $3.45 mid-grade
    I believe PUG was $3.59

topped off the Ram yesterday with mid-grade, for $3.839/gal. One thing that's been really nice lately, is that it seems mid-grade is closer in price to 87 octane than 93. In the past, it always seemed so close in price to 93 that you really weren't saving much by going with mid-grade.

    I think 87 octane was $3.739, while 93 was $4.039.

As for fuel economy, it's been a little oink-oink...14 mpg average over the 2140 miles it's been driven so far. But, for mostly local, short-trip driving, I guess that's not *too* bad. Especially considering how big and heavy it is. I've gotten as bad as 12.6 mpg on a tank, and as good as 20. For comparison, my Park Ave has done as bad as 14.5 mpg, and as good as 29.8.

I know those low numbers sound pretty horrible, but with my short-trip driving, I'm sure I'd kill the economy on just about any car.

is around $3.29 a gallon for regular unleaded, but one place, Sinclair on 10th St., has RUG for 8¢ a gallon less at $3.21 a gallon. Prayers going out for those affected by the horrible bombings yesterday at the Boston Marathon.

Still hanging at $3.55 for about the last two weeks, but the sun came up today and you know how that can affect things!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,415
Saw Chevron Diesel for $3.89 today, which I think was 2 cents below premium. Probably going to fill it up tonight or tomorrow, as it has been 36 days since I last fueled up the car, and it is far enough below 1/4 now to annoy me.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Spending a few days in Anchorage and the gas prices don't look too bad. Good thing too, since I borrowed a friend's Suburban to tool around town in.
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
I filled at Costco in El Paso for $3.11 per gallon. Average so far $3.29 per gallon. Cheapest diesel so far is $3.49.

Picked up the van from the shop after lunch today. Noticed gas was $3.77 for regular at my usual station. Ran errands and did a grocery run. That's when I noticed the Citgo had popped up their prices so I ran over to the $3.77 station to top off the van, which is down to a quarter of a tank.

Wasn't fast enough. My station was already up to $3.84 too. :-(

So I blew it off - gonna drive the Subaru a while longer since it got filled yesterday on the last leg of our trip home and still has plenty in the tank. The van has enough gas left to get to the "cheap" gas on our next out of town errand run.

Small world...my stepdad grew up in Plains, PA. His mother lived up there until she passed away about a year ago. I don't think I've been up there since the late 80's.

On the subject of gasoline prices, at lunch I just filled up the Ram at the local Crown in Glenn Dale, MD. 89 octane was $3.659/gal. 87 was $3.559 and I think 93 was $3.859.

MPG on this tank was about 14.7. I was hoping it would be better, as part of that included a short trip over to Virginia that was mostly highway. Driving over was uneventful, but coming back I caught the tail end of rush hour traffic and gridlock from a couple of bad accidents, so a trip that should have taken maybe 35 mins took almost two hours! That probably didn't do much for fuel economy.

Two days ago you could get RUG at Sam's Club for $3.51. This morning it is at $3.71. I filled at Shell yesterday for $3.58 and it is now at $3.79 today. That is in Evansville Indiana. Hope I have enough to get to MO where gas is much cheaper.
