I think it's been about 3 or 4 months now, but I got an EX for 26 otd in SFL. No trade in. Taxes were 6%. And I'm guessing the dmv fees were about $150, but I don't have the paperwork in front of me now.
The incentives coming and going could cause price fluctuations.
Herb Chambers is Westborough, MA. This was the cost before sales tax, documentation fee ($289), and title / registration fee of $125. I'm not sure if they made a mistake, but the whole time we were negotiating we all thought it was a 2009. It wasn't till after the papers were signed that my sales guy found out it was a 2010 (great surprise!).
Might be a reflection that there isn't much difference in price between the leftover 2009 or 2010's, so it really didn't make much difference to the dealer what year you got.
yes, this purchase was a while ago. I bought the 09 EX-L R&N for $32k on MAY 30th. Looked at the car May 29th, finalized the deal and paid on the Saturday, then picked it up on June 1st.
The dealer spoke all day about how the price might go up on xx June but I didn't believe it. I think they still might have had a lot of wiggle room.
I'm getting quoted $29,500 (excluding sales tax) on a 2009 EX-L. Also getting quotes a little higher than that on a 2010. I am surprised that dealers are not being more aggressive on selling the 2009 models given that the 2010s have arrived. Clearly Honda is not giving dealer incentives. I would be happy with the 2009 at the right price since I plan to drive it for a long time. How do I get the best deal?
We will have to wait... Seems like Honda is expecting the cash for clunkers rebate will keep sales up on the ody's. If they don't bring back some of the old rebates they are probably going to lose out big time.
Saw last year on this board that someone purchased an '08 model in August when the '09s came out an EX-L with no res. or nav. for $25,000 ($1,000 more than EXs with no extras). Has anyone gotten a deal like this yet? Think it is possible? Know if dealers in NY or surroundings still have a big inventory of EX-L models?
In the short term you are right but 5-6 years down the road an 09 with 25k miles will be worth more than a 2010 with 80k miles. Driven to 150k miles -- no difference both may be candidates for a future cash for clunkers program.
Assume the car depreciates 40-50% in first three years. That equates to roughly 15% in year 1. Hence, I would expect that given the new 2010s are out, I would want a difference in price on a 2009 Touring of about $5,000 over a 2010. Buy the 2010 if the difference is less than that.
My quote of $31505 for the 2010 EX-L RES was no good. I called the salesman to schedule an appointment to sign the contract and he stated he mis-quoted me. He said he quoted me based on the EX cloth package w/ RES, which is a new option with the 2010 models. I thought he would have to honor it, but he was firm and stated that he was not required and that I could talk to his manager if I felt the need. So now, my best quote is $32566.
thanks very much for clarifying, you got a lot of people very excited! So basically, your offer is right around where edmunds TMV is for the 2009 and about $1200 +/- over invoice....which to me is NOT a good deal. Keep us posted please. thanks!
His name is Andrew. I walked in with an email quote from another dealer that was just below $32,000 with a $269 documentation fee and told them they had to beat it substantially, which they did.
thx for posting...this seems in line with what you should pay with no incentives...in your case I think you got a great deal at about $800 below invoice...they aren't making much on that one! congrats!
ok..but if you intend on keeping the car for 4/5+ years I dont think it makes a lot of difference because the lions share of the depreciation occurs when you drive it off the lot (and in the first year)
On a side note, I'm in Sales too (I sell large software transactions), so I picked his brain a little bit on his quota and how he's measured. My particular rep has to sell 23 cars a quarter (Q3 is done at end of Sept). If he or any sales guy needs to hit a quota, they are under extreme pressure to get all deals done by the end of the quarter. If you can wait, go in on September 30th and I'm sure you will get a great deal.
First, of note, we live in WA state, and thus we cannot get the HondaCare Extended Warranty (we are one of three states who have this problem, I guess).
My husband and I LOVE the Odyssey, but really are looking more toward the 2006 or 2007 Odyssey for pricing. We have found a couple nearby.
The first is a 2007 Odyssey, perfect color and interior is in excellent condition. However, the miles are high for an '07 at 57K. We cannot get it certified due to this for the Honda Warranty. However, they are offering us a Zurick warranty for full bumper-to-bumper coverage. They "claim" it is an excellent warranty provider, but I'm not finding the same claims here on Edmunds. Also, I'm not sure how much they will charge us for the warranty. The asking price for the vehicle is $26,488 (without warranty).
Has anyone else run into warranty problems in WA state? What/who would you recommend for an extended warranty? I don't particularly like the idea of purchasing a vehicle with such high miles and no warranty. Also, does the price seem fair?
I don't know much about the warranty options, but that price seems HIGH for an 07 with 57K miles. I'm not sure what you're budget is, but you can probably get a 2010 EX for that price if you negotiate correctly...the LX would be even cheaper.
I've recieved 2 internet quotes so far, neither are too exciting....
first: 2009 Honda Odyssey EXL with Rear Entertainment System MSRP: $35,425 ePrice: $33,351
He also offered an EXL W/O RES In addition, here is an alternative you may want to consider: Year: 2009 Make: Honda Model: Odyssey EXL MSRP: $33,825 ePrice: $31,905
second: I can offer you a July Internet Sale Price of $32,688.00 (prices are plus any applicable sales tax and our dealer administration fee of $229.00)
Does anyone think the dealers are going to recieve Honda incentives for the 2009 in August - or is Honda only supporting the 2010s? Great forum and appreciate every sharing thoughts and #'s....very helpful.

Two years ago, I was about to buy an Odyssey in July, when Honda pulled the $750 incentive that they had on them (ran to July 4th). I ended up buying a Pilot instead. Then, on August 9, Honda not only restored the incentive, but upped it to $2000.
It all depends really on inventories - if the 09s sit on the lots, Honda will have to restore the incentive. If they are still selling (including any Clunkers Cash effects), they may not.
36548+ Doc fee and title fee of 372 and 27 = $36,947
Told him that it makes no sense to buy an 09 thats been sitting on his lot for 4+ months when I can get a 2010 in a few weeks for approx $1000 more. No response yet. I expect him to tell me that the 2010s will not be sold at invoice...That of course is baloney because you can almost always get one at invoice + doc, etc.
Sure, tell him that Tim recently bought an Odyssey from him in Slate Metallic Green and I told you he would hook you up. I'd refrain from mentioning the specific price he sold it to me for, but know they can go that low (possibly lower). If you're looking for a deal, get in there before the end of the month. Try to get another quote for leverage too and don't be afraid to walk away.
I was just told by a sales rep that if I found an '09 Touring for $35k I should run and go do it. Doesn't feel like they want/can deal right now. I just can't imagine that the cash for clunkers is going to have any impact on Touring sales at all. I'm betting the incentives will be back fairly early in Aug when they look at all those Odysseys sitting on their lots and the new ones on the way.
This is the offer I got: $ 31,327.00 plus $670.00 for destination charge and $99.00 for processing fee that adds up to $ 32,096.00. then add your state tax at 6% $ 1,925.76 and your new tag and MVA fees of $274.00 and you have a grand total of $ 34,296.74 out the door.
Seeing that people have got lower prices during the incentives and that the 2010's are just around the corner, this doesn't seem like such a "Honda Clearance" price. What do you think? Thank you all for all your posts. They have been helpful.
well it depends..if you look back a few days on this forum, trc bought the same car but a 2010 for a few hundred bucks less than your 2009 (+doc, tax, etc). In that sense, its not a good deal. That said, your price before taxes was still about $700 below invoice. So it seems 'ok'. I hope trc101 is telling the truth!
Does any one have a problem like I do ? I bought 2003 Odyssey EX in July2003, only 3 years later I had oil leak.Result: $5.11 oil seal and $604.00 labor cost.Luckily it paid by warranty (only a month left.)Now I have oil leak again.I went to two Honda dealers, the est.cost $1100.00 to $1300.00.The rear main oil seal again. The repair covered for 12 months or 12000 miles.I'm out of warranty. I feel I'm treated unfairly. It looks like I get lemon Honda and lemon services from Honda dealer .( It's took 4 visits to complete the repair).I 'm thinking of get rid off all my Honda cars(2) out of my house and looking for Toyota Sienna Le.
Those of you looking to purchase new ody.Reading many posts on this forum i see lots of desperation. Why would anybody want to purchase a car for $ 35000 to $37000 (especially this late when 2010 ody is here already) when we all know everybody else purchased it for $33000 to $34500 (incl.des) just a few weeks ago?If HONDA does not offer incentives, than wait for the incentives to come back on. Do not get discouraged. They have to sell the cars and they(HONDA AND DEALERS)need you. Let them sweat a little. If enough of you adopt this kind of attitude, sooner rather then later you will be rewarded with better Quotes.DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR HARD EARNED $$$$$$, and REMEMBER IT IS STILL A BUYERS MARKET.JUST MY 2CENTS.GOOD LUCK TO ALL.
habsone, Couldn't agree with you more. Better, my wife also agrees which is really the operative here. I can not imagine paying close to invoice in this market. If not a Honda then a Toyota. Fortunately, we are in no hurry.
Unless you need a new van right now, you should probably wait to save some money. I was talking to a friend today who told me the final assembly auto plants (not Honda) put out a car almost every minute. Assuming Honda does the same or even half the rate, I would imagine there would be a surplus. Wait for the incentives to come back.
Im holding out for them ody incentives im sure they will be back soon Just let that 1 billion of cash run out for "Cash for Clunkers" things will slow down big time after that.
something else to consider ... I've been looking at the mazda cx-9 recently ... its a large crossover SUV with seating for 3 in the second row and seating for 2 in the 3rd row. Mazda is currently running $4k in dealer marketing support for the 09's, so they are a great value right now (for example, the Edmunds TMV for the Touring/All-wheel-drive model (middle level) with included leather and etc is $27,611). Combined gas mileage is 1mpg below the ody; also what you lose is there isn't as much space between rows as in the odyssey, plus you lose that 'side-walkway' next to the right slider door, where in a minivan you can walk from the second to the third row. Plus there is less room behind the third row, and its not deep towards the ground, like in the odyssey. Also, at least in my area, its hard to find one with a factory rear-entertainment system. Although its much more sylish than a minivan. I'm considering it and trying to figure out if losing out on the minivan's space is worth the lower cost and better styling.
I'm sorry, but you can not compare the ody to a CUV or midsize SUV. If so, you should also consider the Pilot and the Acadia/Traverse/Outlook/Enclave series. I believe the CX-9 Touring requires premium gas. It can not compare to the space of a minivan, though I would suspect it is more fun to drive. Different cars for different needs.
Who wouldn't agree to your logic- of course it make sense. But you can apply that very logic to buying a PC. If you wait, you are guaranteed to get a better price period. The reason people pick a time to buy is that their 'need' threshold has been reached and surpasses their 'wait' threshold. Each person defines their need threshold in their own terms and you'll get varying opinions of how important those terms are. One need threshold that is pretty black and white is that the existing lease on your current car is running out and you need to replace it. I suppose you have a choice to extend the lease but you have a stronger need to replace it (remember one of the reasons people lease is because they simply like getting a new car every 3-4 years). So, obviously, yes, wait and you will be rewarded with a 'deal' but you will never know if that deal will get better the *next* time and at some point you have to buy...esp if your clunker dies.
Been reading these forums for years and have to say this post is one of the best at telling it like it really is. All the desperation about when to buy-whether to buy-how much to pay puts people in a spin that clouds judgement and reality. We all hope the stars align just right in everything we do but even when they do, not everyone acts. Human nature. I thought about buying a thousand shares of ford stock when it was $2. Didn't and now it's over $6. Oh well, par for the course but no fretting or self recriminations. But if I could go back in time I'd buy 2000 shares. Rolling the dice on a car deal is easier when you really need a car. Most people who post aren't in that position -- on any thread-- so they "sit and spin." Whatever meets your needs at the time is generally what happens.
another day goes by, closer to end of month and poof...2 dealers call me and ask me 'What will it take?". One of the offers was the best i've seen 'post July 6' for a Touring w/out PAX... $35,899 OTD. Small caveat is that it has 1000 miles on it and was used as a demo. I might bite on this one considering its about $1600 below invoice for a 2010. I may be close to my 'need' threshold
We were talking to dealers on Monday and didn't like the prices on the 2009s. We walked away and a dealer just called offering to lower our price by the new $1200 rebate. Patience is a virtue.
