Prices up early this morning. A few days ago prices were uniform but today in a one mile strecht with 9 gas station with 7 different prices ranging from 1.62 9/10 to 1.69 9/10 for regular .Premium prices 20 cents more. All are self service stations .
Regular is running $1.84 to $1.90 up 10 cents in the last few days. Generaly mid grade is 10 cents more and top grade 20 cents. The spread is less at some stations. I was paying $1.21 the first of the year.
I remember in 1974 when the prices began to go up , some people resorted to gas syphonin . To those who don't have locks in the gas door might want to invest on one . Creep up again 3 cents to 1.79 9/10 for regular in east central Florida .
can you even siphon gasoline out of a car anymore? I thought there were a couple of screens in there between the filler opening and the gas tank nowadays?
Every once in awhile though, my uncle would siphon gas out of my '67 Catalina for the lawnmower. Its fuel filler is mounted real low, behind the license plate in the rear bumper, so it's easy to get to. When the light hits it right, you can actually look down into the tank!
Filled up Exxon regular @1.49 9/10$ last night in Austin, Tx. Super(93 octane) was 1.59 9/10$ I doubt that siphoing will happen. There are too many behemoths SUVs around:( I hope they would start trading in for fuel-economy cars. Though don't see it happening till gas hits 3-4$
...who has been a GM man for years, suddenly up and dumped his '01 (or was it an '02, I forget now) Camaro for a Jetta Diesel! He also has a Trailblazer, which he's thinking about just selling outright, without replacing.
I guess the gas prices are starting to make some people think twice. He also has a fairly long commute to work, probably about 80-100 miles round trip, so that 52 mpg is going to make a pretty big difference!
Last night I put $10.00 in the Intrepid, @$1.769 per gallon. I don't think I've ever paid that much for 87 octane fuel in my life.
Talk FM today in St. Louis, you may have heard me making fun of all of the people complaining about the price of gas, and explaining that fuel costs are still a small fraction of what most pay to operate a car.
One thing I thought of after I hung up was, how many people are paying more in interest on their car loans than they are for fuel?
Not everybody got 0% financing. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who are paying more in a year in interest charges than they do in fuel costs.
...it's still not that big of a deal, in the grand scheme of things. Even at $1.769 a gallon, it's only going to cost me around $80 a month for gasoline. (figuring 1000 miles a month, 22 mpg average).
The cheapest I can remember gasoline being recently was back in late '01. For awhile it got as low as $0.979 a gallon. If gas got that cheap again, it'd cost me about $44.50 a month.
Prior to that, I can't remember the last time I paid less than $1.00 per gallon for gasoline. I remember paying $1.169 a gallon for premium for my Gran Fury back in October of '98 (don't ask me why that stuck in my mind!), so I'm sure that 87 octane was probably hovering around a buck or just under around that time.
You know I wasn't making fun of you. Sometimes I think only you and me (and a few others just so they wonder if they are "in" or not) are the sane ones around here, LOL.
...it's just one of those things that's fun to gripe about, even if it's really not that big of a deal. One thing's for sure though, I'm sure glad I'm not still delivering pizzas! At my peak, I was racking up about 4000 miles a month!
have again. I delivered for Pizza Haven in Lynnwood, WA in 1979. A tougher job than you might think for MANY reasons. Gas price today in Mt.Vernon, WA was $1.81/gallon for regular unleaded.
where I am, the cheapest around is Arco, currently at $2.07 for regular, and the nearest gas station to my house, a 76, is asking $2.29. The Arco wants $2.31 for premium, and the 76 wants $2.49.
I figure no big deal, Americans have had it way too easy in gas prices for so long, but I feel really bad for the commercial truckers.
My main wish would be less fluctuation in gas prices - the spikes up OR down are hard to budget for.

Sadly, I was actually happy to pay only $1.959 for Premium (don't know if it was 92 or 93 octane) last night. I'm hoping to get that Corolla or Elantra soon, putting gas in the Blazer (~14 mpg city) is killing me.
does higher octane really make a difference? Can you mix the fuel; say 25% high and 75% regular and get the same performance? Do fuel additive really enhance the performance of the car? Does it depend on the car relative to fuel/additives affect?
...depends on the car. If your car is designed for 87 octane, then as long as everything's functioning properly then 89 or 93 is just a waste of money. However, as cars age, sometimes the combustion chambers will carbon up, and you might need to go to a higher octane to keep the car from pinging.
If you do a mix of 75% 87 octane and 25% 93 octane, then if I'm doing the math right, that should give you about 88.5 octane.
I used to drive an '89 Gran Fury that was a former police pursuit, and it required premium fuel. A few times I tried putting lo-test in it and it'd practically puke it back up. I found though, that if I started off with a full tank of 93 octane, ran it down to about a half-tank, filled up with 87, ran it down to a half-tank again and kept doing this, alternating between 87 and 93, it'd run fine. I didn't have the patience to keep that up for very long though!
Oh yeah, as for gas prices, I saw one of the lowest prices in awhile last night, $1.719 a gallon for 87 at a local Mobil station, so I filled up. Naturally, tonite I ran across a station where it was "only" 1.639 a gallon! Too bad it's out of the way, and wouldn't justify a trip up there just to fill up!
and also just to the south in San Francisco, gas is $0.15-0.20 more expensive than in adjoining counties 15 miles to the east, so I find that whenever I have business over that way these days, I fill up, even if it will only take a few gallons.

Today must be the day to make the move... State College, PA prices dropping 5 cents to $1.59 for 87.

around here, the local gas just went up $0.03 to $2.26 for regular at the Chevron.
Arco has jumped up dramatically, to the point where it has minimal price advantage over Chevron any more. Today it is at $2.13. That is 6 cents more than it was last week, and about 50 cents more than it was 2 months ago.

I'm feeling the pain this week too, because I'm driving my '79 NYer. Took $28.00 to fill that sucker up yesterday, and that was only about 16 gallons! Now I'm starting to see how these SUV drivers feel.
I gas up at a generic station on Ritchie Hwy. in Brooklyn, MD (yes, there is such a place). I use 89, and the last time I was there (3 days ago), it was $1.71 a gallon.
Royal Farm in Baltimore (like 7-11 for the 21st century) is about $1.75 for the same fuel in Baltimore, MD. The Amoco across the street from the RF is about the same price too, give or take some pennies.
I commute 80 miles daily, and am very much considering a diesel vehicle for my next purchase. I am tired of paying these gas prices!!
...you live in Brooklyn? I'm not far down the road from you, in Crofton. Seems like the further you go up Route 3 and 97 from Crfton, the cheaper gas gets. There's a WaWa up that way, in Millersville, that I hit every time I'm in that area. Last time I went by, I think they were still selling 87 for $1.659. There's a few places in Glen Burnie that are pretty cheap, too.
I live in Federal Hill actually, heart of the city. I work in Lanham though, which is where the Capital Beltway (495) and 50 meet. I drive home from work frequently using 50 to Route 3.
I know the WaWa, but the station I am talking about in Brooklyn is even cheaper than WaWa is.. it's something like $1.64 a gallon for 87, $1.71 for 89 last time I fueled up.
Gas is cheaper the closer you get to the city, but not IN the city...

Iluv- IMO you should not need fuel injector cleaning every 50k if the car is driven regularly perhaps @ 100k.

The discount Rotten Robbie down the street is $2.01/$2.11/$2.21
Still, a bunch cheaper than I paid in Death Valley around Christmas ($2.50) and less than I paid in Canada last summer.

I guess with the soaring gas prices, fuel economy becomes a more important factor in choosing a car. Here's a good report from CNN:

up 10-12 cents the last couple of days
Today the same stations were at $1.759 this morning at 6:30AM.
Got over to South St. Louis County at about 7AM, and regular unleaded was still 1.589, but they said it was going up later today.
Topped off the Buick of course.

Creep up again 3 cents to 1.79 9/10 for regular in east central Florida .
Funny how there's no price fixing yet ALL the stations make the same change at the same time... LOL

Sorry we didn't get to hear Tboner on the radio in St. Louis...luckily we get to read him here..
BTW: Got my Firehawk SZ EP 225's last week. No rubbing, quiet, and great handling. Almost as good as the KDW's.
Well, maybe the KDW's are a bit better in straightline wet.
However, I think the SZ50EP's are better at cornering in the wet.
Back to the gas price discussion.
