All- Thanks for all great tips and guidance. I finally got my 06 Elantra last Saturday. I got it for 13100 drive out! This includes all NJ state taxes, registration, documentation fees, etc. (after 1000 rebate). I also got floor mats, mud guards, and 4 oil changes. I think I got a good deal! Thanks again.
you really got a great deal.. do you live near paramus. i grew up in demarest. it was too bad lehigh valley would not come down in their price. i am the former njdevill but decided to update my name.
I think I've read almost every posts here and want to thank everyone for their great information.
Just got back from getting my '06 GLS Elantra with AT, mudguards, mats, and a couple other extras for an OTD price of $13,250. Trade-in numbers might have skewed this a little bit. Purchased it at Fairfax(Virginia) Hyundai.
I realize the '07s are on the horizon, but my old car('97 Explorer) wasn't going to make it another month without some repairs. I test drove a Nissan Sentra and didn't like that very much, it felt a little too cramped. Also looked at the Corolla, but the lowest I could get even a base CE with AT around here was $1,500 more than the Elantra. Add in power windows, locks, Side Airbags, etc... and it went WAY up from there.
Thanks again, and hope to be around here more often.
The fact that the 07s are on the horizon is actually a *good* reason to buy an 06. At the end of a model run, all the bugs are pretty much worked out. Enjoy the car!
you will enjoy the car. i have a 2005 GLS hatchback and it's excellent. the car is roomy enough that we've had nephews pile in the car. we're planning on keeping ours until the wheels fall off. it convinced my wife that when the day comes that we have little ones, it's actually roomy enough to be a family car.
It's more than roomy enough to be a family car until the little ones grow to almost 6 feet tall. I have two 6 foot sons, and if they have the ride in the back, it's a little cramped. Luckily, most of their friends are not so tall so I can still cart them around once in a while.
I have a question folks. I notice all the talk of package 1,2,3,4, etc., and have no idea what they are. My 2006 GLS had the automatic, cruise, tilt, air, floor mats, 6 speaker CD, and rubberized trunk tray. So what package did I get? I paid 15,200 for it, with the optional "gap insurance" from Hyundai of El Paso. These guys broke their butts getting me financed, and they did it in three days total. (I have over 200,000 dollars in charged off medical bills due to being hit by a drunken uninsured driver ). Brie
The Package Numbers were used on the Hyundai USA website for model years prior to 2006. In 2006, there are basically two options: auto trans and the premium package (ABS, TCS & sunroof). All the other options are pretty much standard or are dealer options on the 2006 model. If the $15,200 is "out the door" with taxes, the gap insurance, etc., that's not too bad. If it doesn't include tax, it sounds like you pretty much paid sticker price.
That's comparable to what I paid, then. I got a 2005 and paid $13,900, plus TT&L of about $1k. You paid a little more than that, but I think your car has some upgrades I don't have (six speaker stereo and stuff). In the same ballpark.
my wife and i are both little people, so maybe when we have kids they'll be mini-folks too. of course, we're a childless couple now and likely will be for several more years (grad school). wife drives a 1998 civic coupe now and we'll replace that one in a couple of years, and naturally it's reliable (replaced oxygen sensors, struts and the exhaust is rusting).
I heard somewhere that Hyundai is coming out with a hybrid in 2007 or 2008. By the time you get out of school, you might want to look into to something that will have a real low operating expense. (Got to pay off those student loans you know.) Brie
The hybrid project has been delayed a year, due to the corruption trial of the CEO. It doesn't affect current operations, but new products and ventures have been affected.
If you're not worried about head room, the Elantra is a great car! And also... it is one of the top 10 envirnonmentally friendly cars sold in the U.S.
doohickie is dead on about the head room. I'm 6'1", with looong legs, and I am VERY comfortable in the car. I have a photo that I took of the car with everything that I packed into it for a return from a shopping trip in El Paso. two weeks of groceries, ten gallons of gas, a small DRAFTING TABLE, a 50 pound bag of dog food, etc. I was thinking of starting a thread entitled "This is what I got into my Elantra" where people could load photos of what the car will carry. I think that this will help people who might be looking at this site see just how useful this little car is. Who knows? They just may buy one. My question is,how do I load a photo? I'm going to hit the img button that I just saw, but if that doesn't work, someone please tell me how to do it.
yep, one of the things i was happy to see was the smog rating on the car. i know driving a car period is bad for the environment, but i live in a city with poor & unreliable public transportation and it's nice that since I am stuck with an automobile that i am leaving lighter footprints than if i drove something else. my next car will likely be a hyundai hybrid. after several months with my elantra, the wife & i are pretty much sold on the brand.
was loaded into my Elantra for 900 miles when I brought my son home from college in May:
By the way, to display an image, Brie, you have to have it hosted somewhere on the web Photobucket and Flickr are good, free hosting sites. Once you register with one of those, upload your photos to them, then use the web address of the actual image inside the image tag ("Img" button below the composition window).
The result should look something like this (from the last picture above):
Are these OTD prices? I just went thru the buying process here in Northern Virginia, and I can tell you that at my local dealership the prices for the basic versions(with AT) that you quoted are as follows($1K rebates included) -
no, it's not OTD. I guess my price isn't bad. Will I be able to get more money shaved off of the Elantra GLS (automatic)? The price above does not include matts or any other options.
Should I ask the dealer (via e-mail) for a better price before I go to a Missouri Hyundai dealer to match or beat the above price?
I also have a trade-in...but I don't expect much from my current car (less than a thousand).
I ended up selling it, but when I was car shoppig last year, I was offered $1200 for a 1995 Ford Aspire (update of the old Festiva) with 117,000 miles. And that was on top of a deeply discounted sales price. The only reason I didn't do it at the time is that it was on a Focus and I wanted to check out the Elantra one more time before I bought (ended up buying the Elantra).
Moral of the story: A trade-in, even a crappy one, may be worth more than you think. As we head into the latter parts of the model year, having a trade-in can help a dealer justify a lower price on a 2006 model.
Well, its the end of June. My fiance and I have just decided that for our second car, we would like to own a 2006 Hyundai Elantra GT. We test drove the vehicle, and love everything about it. We are currently in the negotiation phase of the car buying process. We have really been only able to work with one dealer, and we have them down to $14,000.00 OTD, with four free oil changes. I sent him back to his manager *cough cough*, and I will be waiting for him to get back to me on whether or not he was able to work something lower out. I think he will come back with something lower...but how far do I push this guy? I am personally aiming for $13,500.00 OTD. Oddly enough...this seems to be the part about buying the car I like best. Is that a good OTD price? I know that running the F&I gauntlet is going to be rough after all this back-and-forth, but I think I am up for it. I look forward to feedback.
$14k out the door is a great deal on a GT. I paid that much not including TT&L for my 05 GLS (with AT) last year. You didn't say whether the one you're looking at is AT or MT, but I would almost have to assume with the price you're talking that it is an MT.
Even if they don't come down, grab it, you are getting a good deal. I would have gotten a GT, but the dealer didn't have any on the lot, and there was only one dealer in El Paso at the time. By the way, the longer you have the car, the more you are going to like it. Welcome to the family.
I think $14,000 with 4 free oil changes is very good. That is what we paid for our 05 GT 4-door with manual transmission, sunroof with the shield, mud guards, painted on pin stripes and 8 free oil changes. You can try. They also included some other goodies since we have bought many cars from them.It is an excellant car, it is an alround better riding car than our 05 civic ex-se, IMO.
Wow...thank you all for the feedback and support. Buying a car is a crazy experience, and this forum especially has been a huge help. So thank you to all who have provided such wonderful and helpful information. They are already coming down more, and I will jump on it soon, I think. I look forward to driving off the lot in this great piece of machinery.
Thanks everyone for all the great info here! I got a quote for an Elantra manual GLS w/ ABS etc for 14,230 (before taxes, after rebate). Any advice if that's a good quote for the Seattle area. Sales tax would here is 8.8 and would turn this into an ODT of 15,607.
Also, does anyone have experience with this area and Hyundai dealers?
I'm seriously considering a 2006 Elantra, but was wondering when the 2007s are coming out? I see that the rebates are ending this week, but it's still a little too soon for me to make a move. Is it better to wait until the 2007's arrive and the dealers wnt to get rid of the old models?
If you can wait, and if color or options aren't too much of a concern for you, I would say that you should wait. The announced rebates may be ending, but they were honoring the rebates on 2005 models last month, so that shouldn't be a concern. They'll likely re-implement them, especially with the new summer advertising campaign that's going on.
You might not have to wait for them to arrive, though. Dealers will have to make room for the new models *before* they arrive after all.
Keep in mind that the 2007 models won't offer a hatchback initially. So if that's something you're interested in, you may not be able to use the same tactics.
I'd look around for the best deal you can get on a hatchback right now. The concern would be that they don't *make* a lot of hatchbacks compared to the number of sedans. When I bought my 2005 last October, I had to drive 40 miles to the next county to find one (3 dealers in my county had no hatches at all).
And I highly recommend the hatch. It is roomier and more comfortable that just about anything else in its price range. You won't be sorry. If you want to do a comparison, try driving it back to back with a Ford Focus. I bet you'll end up with the Elantra.
I can aruge that waiting for the 2007s to come in could *hurt* your ability to make a deal, because while the rumor is that they'll be introduced in the new model mid-year, I haven't seen anything official. So while you use the "nobody wants this car" tactic on them, they can use the "you're not going to be able to get this car anywhere else" on you.
While dealers are looking to make room for upcoming 2007s (including the new 2007 Accent hatches soon), now may be a good time to go buying.
I'm responding to my own message just to let you'all know that I ended up buying the GLS w/ABS (manual) for $13,750, so $500 lower than the original price quoted. (This doesn't yet include taxes.) I am pretty happy but think I could have done better on the trade-in. Just said Yes to the first price they named for my old Accord. Oh well. That's old news now!
Congrats. I bought from them about 3 weeks ago. Smoothest purchasing experience I've ever had for any car. I hope their service department runs as smoothly.
My husband and I are looking at purchasing an Elantra GLS sometime in the next few weeks. I've gotten a few Internet quotes and the 2 that gave an actual price are starting at around the $13,500 mark (that's after the $1000 rebate and before taxes and such). This seems to already be in line with the price edmunds shows people paying in our area. Question is, is that a pretty good price at this point in the model year, or should I try to get them down lower? I have a junky trade in (a well-loved 1997 Nissan Sentra with 158K miles) that they'll likely give me a little bit of money on. With my trade in and taxes and everything, it would be nice to walk out with something in the 13K or maybe even the upper 12K range. Do you folks think that's reasonable?
What is your "area"? A basic GLS in my area(Northern Virginia) starts at $12,314 after rebate and before Tax/Tags/etc... Tax/tags/etc... in my area is also around $1250.
I am in exactly your spot except no trade and I have my own finances. My best offer is 13,650,after rebate. With 2007's hitting the lots I would think we could do better. Invoice is around 12,964. My dealer has quite a few cars on his lot also.I live in Western MA.
We're in Northwest, GA about an hour outside of Atlanta. The tax on the quote that one of the salesmen sent was a little over $1000 (I just noticed that they taxed the ever popular $399 "dealer fee" as well as the car price; how nice of them). There's a dealership here in town and we made an offer to them at the beginning of the month. We offered $12,500 for the car and wanted $1000 for the tradein for a walkout price of around $12,500. They sent us packing. I'm just wondering how far off that price was and if maybe it's worth it to drive to Atlanta where they have more inventory and try it out there. Problem is, we have a 3 year old and a 6 year old who'll be in tow and dealerships aren't really their favorite places Maybe I should just suck it up and try the local place again at $13,000 towards the end of the month.
Thanks for the North VA prices Doesn't seem like they'd be that far from GA's.
I would think we could get a little bit better deal than this too. My understanding is that the Elantra '07s are a model change too so it would seem that we could get pretty darn close to invoice on these '06s. I saw the invoice price listed as $12,964 but was wondering if that was the price before or after the $1000 rebate. Do you know?
Thanks for the reply and good luck on your purchase. Jeannie
Not sure about the rebate but if I could get them down to invoice I would be happy. Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge could chime in. Boy this car buying is a pain! I might just hold off a bit longer if i do not get a better price.
Hi, Gosh, I was in the same situation a few weeks ago. I also had a Nissan Sentra...similar model year, but little less mileage. My car was great (from the outside) but had a few problems that I was not willing to fix.
With the trade in, I got the new car for $12000 even. This is with the 1000 rebate, trade in, doc fees...and such. Of course, I had to pay taxes on top of that.
My new car is an Automatic with mud guards, matts, trunk net and trunk matt(?). I had contacted a lot of dealers in my area (IA/MO/IL). My town is pretty small...I would have gotten a better deal if I wanted to drive out to Chicago.
The dealer I ended up buying from was not my lowest quote. I bought it from them because they were really nice and polite and also offered to deliver the car to me (a few hours drive).
My lowest quote was from Iowa and St. Louis (internet quotes) : 12,598 and 12,680
I hope this helps. Good luck. It took me about three weeks to get my car.
I would like to know the book value of a 2006 Hyundai Elantra GLS. I purchased my car in 2-2006, new and I paid sixteen thousand dollars. I have three thousand miles on the car and would also like to know when the first oil change is due. According to the manufacturer's book, it says 7500 miles or 6 months-whichever occurs first. I always changed my oil in previous Hyundai's that I owned every three thousand miles.
The book *says* 7500, and might well last that long, but it depends on how much driving you do. When I took mine in for an oil change at 4300, the dealer service department told me, for typical CA driving, 3000 is about right.
They can't ding you for warranty problems for doing it only every 7500 miles. But, you might not have to worry about warranty problems if you bring it in at 3k.
I just had an oil change done at 3200 miles at a jiffy lube service station and paid thirty dollars. I do not like to take the car to the dealer I purchased this from as they have a high hourly rate. After I had first picked up the car, I had the dealer install Lojack security system in the car-this was done two days after I took possession of the car. My husband took the car to have this done and when I got into the car I found that my cd case with all my cd's were not in the car. I was informed by the financing manager of the dealership that the case and my cd's were taken to his house since he did not want to leave them in the dealership unlocked. The financing manager also said that since he is in the midst of redecorating his house, he cannot find the case nor the cds. P.S. I am still minus my cd's and the case it came in from Feb. I had first called Hyundai corporate headquarters about this problem and they said I had to deal with the dealership directly. I told the financing manager that I would never recommend this dealership for future car purchases since this happened. This is another reason that I will not take my car to be serviced at this dealership, I don't want a problem like this again. I believe that I will be alright with my warranty by taking it to Jiffy Lube for the oil change. I also do low mileage about five thousand miles a year, I am in New York. Thanks for your quick response.

THIS OFFER IS GOOD THRU JUNE 30TH 2006 BECAUSE OF THE REBATE'S
This is what I got from a dealer in IA for 06 Elantra GLS w/o any options.
Is this good as is? What else can I do?
This is my first time buying a new car. I also plan to make monthly payments. (does this affect the price of the car when dealing for a good price?)
I am looking into MO dealers also ..I plan to choose the better deal.
Give me some advice!
Elantra GLS - 12,300
Sonota GL - 15,400
Sonota GLS - 15,900
OTD is another $1200 here. And I was able to get another $1K off between haggling on the price and LOW value trade-in
