No prob proaxe...The dealership is "Sam Swope Honda World" in Louisville. I am very happy with them. They deserve to do some serious volume business.

Thanks Odysseus1! If I acquire from there, I will be sure to post my experience as well.

Have a great day and God Bless!

One other question Odysses1. Did you finance? If so, do you know what Honda Motor Credit finance rates were running on a 5 year term?

    Thanks
  • odysseus1odysseus1 Member Posts: 23
Yes, I will finance (vehicle has yet to be delivered). I am debating about using my conventional financing company but am already pre-approved through Honda...I've no idea what the current Honda/dealership rates are...hopefully better than 4.84/5 years, which is what I have in hand now.

    For you information:

On December 13, 2004 I was able to get a 05 Odeysey EX-L for $74.5 over invoice. There was no trade involved. I paid cash and bought no extra's. DOC fee was $100.

On December 31, 2004 I bought a '05 Pilot EX-L from a different dealer and got it for Invoice less 3% Holdback. There was no trade involved. I financed through Honda for 2.9% and bought no extra's. Doc fee was $100.

On this 2nd transaction (Pilot) I asked the dealer if they are offering the holdback on the Odeysees and they said no way. The price was invoice plus $800 for Odeyseys. I think I could of got if for invoice but no less.

This dealer was trying to make year end numbers and i think Honda had an incentives on the Pilot that is why I got the holdback. Other dealers were offering the holdback also.

Since these two purchases I have noticed the people posting on Edmunds has declined greatly. Sales in January must be down. You guess on whether this is good or bad for future negotiations.

    Good Luck with your Deal.

My guess the deal today for an Odyssey is Invoice + $200.
  • kmd99kmd99 Member Posts: 13
The deals are still out there, but you may have to go out of your way to get it. I'm picking up my newly built 05 Ody EX-L (Ocean Mist) tomorrow at a dealership 4 hours away. The order was placed at the beginning of the month. I managed to get invoice + $800 (which I will gladly take). The dealerships around here wouldn't come close to it and told me if I could get that kind of deal, then get it!

Hopefully by tomorrow, my wife and I will be the newest members of the Ody family!

    Odysseus1,

Great post (as well as the name). Very helpful and informative.

Now about the original HONDA leather wrapped steering wheel...it is widely available as an accessory price range $47 - $60. (Dealers charge so much (in some cases it is wise to pay that extra cost to save time and cuts on the fingers while sewing the leather wrap) It is relatively easy to "install" but requires patience and effort. The end result of a job well done to one's own satisfaction is a great feeling.

Hope this helps. Best wishes with your purchase.

Odysseys continue to sell well in my area (Columbus, OH) judged on stock volume at several stores. However, you may well be right that overall sales may be off: Honda paid some premium dollars yesterday to advertise the Odyssey during the fourth quarter of the Colts-Pats game.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Oh, I understand. Your post just seemed a little condensending and reflected an attitude that I seem to see more and more these days.

Sounds like things worked out for you and you are happy and that's all that matters.

    Enjoy!
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
No, sales aren't off, at least not in my area.

I wish they would advertise product we are well stocked with instead!
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
Sort of like some Honda salespeople I encountered when I was shopping for an Odyssey a few years ago...

It's a two-way street. And, unfortunately, your industry has a reputation for taking advantage of people. Fair or not, many customers probably walk through the door prepared to have their pocket picked...
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
Sales may not be off in your area, but you must at least admit that street prices have fallen nationwide--and much more rapidly than they did for the '99-'04 model. And if that's not a reflection of demand, then it is at least indicative of the increased level of both production and competition.....

Perhaps I shouldn't have said sales are off because, clearly, based on sales numbers for December, they are robust (projected 180,000 plus units).

Heywood summed it up better: softer prices and more competition.

Of course, advertising a product in short supply does have a way of driving up its price.

With $1500 off MSRP - this is what my dealer came up with for a 36Month/15K per year lease:

"The lease for 36 months with 0 Down is $674. This is a true 0 down (1st payment is rolled in) with 35 remaining payments of $674.

With $1489.91 down (1st, security, license and doc fee) your payment is $616.52."

The residual is $19,727.70. The money factor is .003021.

Any thoughts or comparative leases out there - as these seems crazy to me. I could finance the entire vehicle and still have a payment less than either of these options.

The residual is $19,727.70. The money factor is .003021.

I agree. It is a two way street. I treat my customers the way I would like to be treated, with respect and a straightforward approach.

When they come in with an attitude, I lose interest quickly. I don't need it.

I am considering buying an Odyssey EX in the next couple of months--hopefully some incentives will pop up--and I have been trying to get some quotes w/o any luck. My town only has 2 dealerships and the salesman at the one we test drove at said the price would not go down from $29,500 (MSRP w/ dealer installed options) more than a couple hundred bucks. I got a quote from a CO dealership--I don't mind going to surrounding states--for $27010 + tax. She said, "This is the bottom line, out the door price on the car". Does this mean it includes all fees? And, is this the lowest it will go? Do you think the Odysseys will go down in price in the next few months? I think I can wait up 5 months if I have to, but I could buy today if I got a great price.

Does anyone have any experience with the Honda financing? What credit bureau they use, any problems, etc.
  • heywood1heywood1 Member Posts: 851
There are many salespeople like you. However, there are many that are not. Unfortunately, auto sales is a profession rife with casualties from failed businesses, lost jobs, and those who are 'just doing this until I find something else.' Turn-over is incredibly high. I've even gone back to look at a vehicle a second time, only to find the salesperson I saw the day before 'isn't with us anymore....'

But I would think that a really successful salesperson would not 'lose interest quickly' with a customer who's less than Donna-Reed-friendly, but rather would try to win over that customer.

I hope you're independently wealthy enough to treat well only those customers you like.....

Within the last 3 months, I tried all except Davenport and Vester. None were willing to negotiate except from MSRP (EX-L N/R & Touring) and most told me 'we can get MSRP, why should we go lower'. I told them I was happy for them and left. They keep calling / e-mailing asking if I'm still in the market. I say yes. But thats all I say. Jerking around is a 2 way street. Better to try a different state or go for the Sienna.

I just picked up a new Odyssey LX. Here are the details:

Odyssey LX, Sage Brush Pearl with Ivory interior.

No extended warrantee. No dealer installed options.

    No trade

    No financing, cash deal

I paid $23,101 plus $121 Admin and title fees to the dealer. (Invoice for the LX model is $23,100).

The dealer is AutoFair Honda in Manchester, NH. The deal was done entirely over the phone in about 5 minutes. Check out their web site. Just google AutoFair Honda. Their site lists their 'Upfront Best Price'. They are a no-haggle dealer.

Everything about this deal was very smooth and very professional. The first time I saw the dealership was when I picked up the car. This is a very large, new, professional operation. They are located about 60 miles north of Boston.

I feel this discussion applies to 'buying experience,' and the way many customers are treated by Honda salespeople, as well as the impressions salespeople give potential buyers regarding supply & demand of the Odyssey.

    Well, you're wrong :)

General comments about Honda sales methods belong on the Smart Shopper board, or in one of our general Honda discussions, which can be found using our search tools at the left.

We are in the process of buying an Odyssey EXL with a dealer that is couple hours away. All negotiation is done through emails and phone calls so far. We have not been to the dealership. The internet sales manager I am working with wants a $500 non-refundable credit card deposit for holding the vehicle for us. He said the car is going to arrive in the next few days. When I ask him for something in writing he said our email communicattion is fine. Should I ask for something that's more formal since the deposit is non-refundable?
  • dulnevdulnev Member Posts: 652
"Should I ask for something that's more formal since the deposit is non-refundable?"

Absolutely! Furthermore, it's highly unusual to demand a non-refundable deposit. It's not like they need to do this; if you refuse to buy the Ody, there'll be 10 people to take your place in a minute!

If you do decide to give him a non-refundable deposit, make sure he faxes to you a DRAFT contract showing the VIN (this is the most important part), model, color, any installed options, car price and any additional charges (such as a documentation fee).
  • dudleyrdudleyr Member Posts: 3,469
It is slimy to ask for a non refundable deposit. Beware.
  • denver5357denver5357 Member Posts: 319
Actually, I experienced both sides of the nonrefundable deposit.

At the Honda dealer I eventually bought an Ody from last month, they found the van we wanted in a neighboring state. They said up front there would be a nonrefundable $500 deposit, to cover shipping and who knows what else. I asked them to fax me the invoice on the car (with VIN), and the dealer sheet in the window. For some reason, Honda doesn't have a version of that which can be faxed (since dealers are not supposed to remove the sheet from the window). Chrysler did (see below). Anyway, I asked him to change the language of the nonrefundable deposit to say if the van was not as advertised or was unsatisfactory, then it was refundable. He readily did. And in the end I bought from him.

Now, at the Chrysler dealer they never said there would be any fee to bring a T&C from a different neighboring state. They asked for a credit card number "just to be sure you are serious." I figured it would be used to run it and see if we had good credit, and since they faxed me an offer sheet for the T&C on which they had written, "No additional for shipping and handling," I did not expect there to be a fee. Long story short, my wife didn't like the T&C and we were going to pass. But before we could (she went out of town, then Christmas approached), I checked my cc balance online and was shocked to find an $800 charge by that Chrysler dealer. I called immediately and had to leave a message, but requested that it be removed now. No one called me back and it wasn't removed. We have had to dispute that charge and file paperwork with the bank's credit card fraud department and close that credit card. I STILL have not heard from that dealer.

So, there are two stories from last month.
  • accord3accord3 Member Posts: 3
Not speaking from personal experience; however a friend of mine purchased an Odyssey base Touring from Leith and he indicated that he had a positive experience. Granted this is more of a "deal" car per se given the lower than expected demand on the base Touring. I believe his deal was a little north of the invoice price if I'm not mistaken.

When is a deal not a deal ? Good question and the answer seems to be whenever it fits the

dealership.I recently put down a deposit on a EXL nav/res and also signed contract with final price that would be completed upon vans arrival. I was given verbal promise that the van would be on site within 2 weeks since they had 1 getting built and already scheduled to arrive.Well 13 days pass so I call and I am told they cannot tell when van will be in until tomorrow call back then. I called back the next day and I am told that honda has SLOWED PRODUCTION and the van will not be there for atleast another 2 weeks. Needless to say their stories start to smell very bad and I feel a face to face with General manager or owner is needed. I go by dealership on my way to work this morning and notice new shipment of vans have arrived. Suprise suprise the exact day they said van would arrive their shipment comes in. I do not see the van I ordered and proceeded to work. After I get home from work I make beeline to dealership to see if TRUTH can be found there. ANSWER NO. I meet the owner on his way out the door and ask since he is leaving who is in charge he replies GM is inside. I am met by my salesman that tells me that GM is not here and I proceed to tell him I just talked to owner and he said otherwise. I wait 10 mins and GM with more stories about they are now getting van from another dealership and can't promise when it will arrive. I ask what happened to the

van I was promised and why their story keeps changing. All I get is more Doubletalk.I asked for my deposit back and told them I could not do Bussiness will people that I dont trust.

This dealership and its salesman we had CANNOT BE TRUSTED and should get a job writing fairy tales because only children would belive their tales.

I will be contacting honda about their actions and wanted to warn this forum that GATEWAY HONDA New Port Richey FL. If you like story tellers and waiting on ghosts use them but if you want to to get HONEST deal I suggest you look elsewhere.

Did you try sending an e-mail to all the dealer's near you using the dealer locator on www.hondacars.com?

I don't think there is a supply problem with EX and EX-L. The supply demand problem is with anything with RES and/or NAV. This is from my observation of previous posts AND checking inventory at local dealers.

    Good luck.

I personally like the back and forth bantering between isellhondas and heywood. It's entertaining and it keeps me coming back to this forum even though I know I won't find any SoCal stories about buying an EX-L w/ DVD & NAVI for $1,000 over invoice.

Wife and I purchased an EX-L in Ocean Mist for $28,600 + TTL (no trade involved) this past Saturday from McDavid Honda in Houston. Very little arm-twisting involved. I don't know if this really qualifies as a deal or not....

    Odysseus1 -

Thanks. The whole deal went so easy that I couldn't help but think that I could have gotten a better deal. Weird, huh? It's almost gotten so bad that we all EXPECT to spend hours and hours at a dealer hammering out a 'fair' deal. So when you and the dealer can agree on a price over the course of two or three e-mails, you almost feel cheated.

What I think helped was that I had a dealer in San Antonio who initially agreed on a smidge under $28,600 on a unit that was coming in either late this month or early in February. When I informed the internet guy at McDavid in Houston of this, he immediately countered with $28,600+TTL for a unit he had in stock. I had a faxed buy order with the VIN on 'our' van within about 2 hours of my INITIAL round of e-mails to dealers around the state.

    I love the internet.

On 12-31-04, I contacted 3 Honda dearlerships and said I'm buying an 05 ODY EX-l, who wants to make a sale before the end of the year. Lia Honda of Enfield, CT said $29,500, but both Lia Honda of North Hampton, MA and Curry Honda of Chicopee, MA said $28,348 [$800 over invoice] I went with Curry Honda because they had the right color in stock and [reluctantly] gave me $1,100 trade-in on a 91 Chevy Blazer with 130k. My net was $300 below invoice and I was very happy [until I found out the actual gas mileage is an unimpressive 18-19mpg instead of the 20-28mpg advertised, but that's another story.]

I do believe if you had actually gone into the dealership and then negotiated, he would have come down. I didnt even try over the phone. Salesman usually negotiate better in person, knowing you can do the deal right there. Anyways, good luck with the van. We do love it so far.

But, I am still holding out on an earlier post...w/o any replys. I was wondering if $27,010 + tax was good deal for an EX. This is the OTD price. Does this mean it includes all fees? And, how much do fees usually add up to? Could I do better?
